Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death among women worldwide. It affects in general women older than 40 years old. Medical images analysis is one of the most promising research areas since it provides facilities for diagnosis and decision-making of several diseases such as BC. This paper conducts a Structured Literature Review (SLR) of the use of Machine Learning (ML) and Image Processing (IP) techniques to deal with BC imaging. A set of 530 papers published between 2000 and August 2019 were selected and analyzed according to ten criteria: year and publication channel, empirical type, research type, medical task, machine learning techniques, datasets used, validation methods, performance measures and image processing techniques which include image pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction and feature selection. Results showed that diagnosis was the most used medical task and that Deep Learning techniques (DL) were largely used to perform classification. Furthermore, we found out that classification was the most ML objective investigated followed by prediction and clustering. Most of the selected studies used Mammograms as imaging modalities rather than Ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging with the use of public or private datasets with MIAS as the most frequently investigated public dataset. As for image processing techniques, the majority of the selected studies pre-process their input images by reducing the noise and normalizing the colors, and some of them use segmentation to extract the region of interest with the thresholding method. For feature extraction, we note that researchers extracted the relevant features using classical feature extraction techniques (e.g. Texture features, Shape features, etc.) or DL techniques (e. g. Medical image analysis plays a pivotal role in the evaluation of diseases, including screening, surveillance, diagnosis, and prognosis. Liver is one of the major organs responsible for key functions of metabolism, protein and hormone synthesis, detoxification, and waste excretion. Patients with advanced liver disease and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) are often asymptomatic in the early stages; however delays in diagnosis and treatment can lead to increased rates of decompensated liver diseases, late-stage HCC, morbidity and mortality. Ultrasound (US) is commonly used imaging modality for diagnosis of chronic liver diseases that includes fibrosis, cirrhosis and portal hypertension. In this paper, we first provide an overview of various diagnostic methods for stages of liver diseases and discuss the role of Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems in diagnosing liver diseases. Second, we review the utility of machine learning and deep learning approaches as diagnostic tools. Finally, we present the limitations of existing studies and outline future directions to further improve diagnostic accuracy, as well as reduce cost and subjectivity, while also improving workflow for the clinicians. Designing implants for large and complex cranial defects is a challenging task, even for professional designers. Current efforts on automating the design process focused mainly on convolutional neural networks (CNN), which have produced state-of-the-art results on reconstructing synthetic defects. However, existing CNN-based methods have been difficult to translate to clinical practice in cranioplasty, as their performance on large and complex cranial defects remains unsatisfactory. In this paper, we present a statistical shape model (SSM) built directly on the segmentation masks of the skulls represented as binary voxel occupancy grids and evaluate it on several cranial implant design datasets. Results show that, while CNN-based approaches outperform the SSM on synthetic defects, they are inferior to SSM when it comes to large, complex and real-world defects. Experienced neurosurgeons evaluate the implants generated by the SSM to be feasible for clinical use after minor manual corrections. Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) is a dynamic 4-dimensional imaging technique (3-dimensional volumes captured over approximately 1 min) in which cerebral blood flow is quantified by tracking the passage of a bolus of intravenous contrast with serial imaging of the brain. To diagnose and assess acute ischemic stroke, the standard method relies on summarizing acquired CTPs over the time axis to create maps that show different hemodynamic parameters, such as the timing of the bolus arrival and passage (Tmax and MTT), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cerebral blood volume (CBV). However, producing accurate CTP maps requires the selection of an arterial input function (AIF), i.e. a time-concentration curve in one of the large feeding arteries of the brain, which is a highly error-prone procedure. Moreover, during approximately one minute of CT scanning, the brain is exposed to ionizing radiation that can alter tissue composition, and create free radicals that increase the risk of cancer. This paper proposes a novel end-to-end deep neural network that synthesizes CTP images to generate CTP maps using a learned LSTM Generative Adversarial Network (LSTM-GAN). Our proposed method can improve the precision and generalizability of CTP map extraction by eliminating the error-prone and expert-dependent AIF selection step. Further, our LSTM-GAN does not require the entire CTP time series and can produce CTP maps with a reduced number of time points. By reducing the scanning sequence from about 40 to 9 time points, the proposed method has the potential to minimize scanning time thereby reducing patient exposure to CT radiation. Our evaluations using the ISLES 2018 challenge dataset consisting of 63 patients showed that our model can generate CTP maps by using only 9 snapshots, without AIF selection, with an accuracy of 84.37 % . Precise neurosurgical guidance is critical for successful brain surgeries and plays a vital role in all phases of image-guided neurosurgery (IGN). Neuronavigation software enables real-time tracking of surgical tools, ensuring their presentation with high precision in relation to a virtual patient model. Therefore, this work focuses on the development of a novel multimodal IGN system, leveraging deep learning and explainable AI to enhance brain tumor surgery outcomes. The study establishes the clinical and technical requirements of the system for brain tumor surgeries. NeuroIGN adopts a modular architecture, including brain tumor segmentation, patient registration, and explainable output prediction, and integrates open-source packages into an interactive neuronavigational display. The NeuroIGN system components underwent validation and evaluation in both laboratory and simulated operating room (OR) settings. Experimental results demonstrated its accuracy in tumor segmentation and the success of ExplainAI in increasing the trust of medical professionals in deep learning. The proposed system was successfully assembled and set up within 11 min in a pre-clinical OR setting with a tracking accuracy of 0.5 (± 0.1) mm. NeuroIGN was also evaluated as highly useful, with a high frame rate (19 FPS) and real-time ultrasound imaging capabilities. In conclusion, this paper describes not only the development of an open-source multimodal IGN system but also demonstrates the innovative application of deep learning and explainable AI algorithms in enhancing neuronavigation for brain tumor surgeries. By seamlessly integrating pre- and intra-operative patient image data with cutting-edge interventional devices, our experiments underscore the potential for deep learning models to improve the surgical treatment of brain tumors and long-term post-operative outcomes. Monkeypox virus is emerging slowly with the decline of COVID-19 virus infections around the world. People are afraid of it, thinking that it would appear as a pandemic like COVID-19. As such, it is crucial to detect them earlier before widespread community transmission. AI-based detection could help identify them at the early stage. In this paper, we aim to compare 13 different pre-trained deep learning (DL) models for the Monkeypox virus detection. For this, we initially fine-tune them with the addition of universal custom layers for all of them and analyse the results using four well-established measures: Precision, Recall, F1-score, and Accuracy. After the identification of the best-performing DL models, we ensemble them to improve the overall performance using a majority voting over the probabilistic outputs obtained from them. We perform our experiments on a publicly available dataset, which results in average Precision, Recall, F1-score, and Accuracy of 85.44%, 85.47%, 85.40%, and 87.13%, respectively with the help of our proposed ensemble approach. Images are powerful tools with which to convey human emotions, with different images stimulating diverse emotions. Numerous factors affect the emotions stimulated by the image, and many researchers have previously focused on low-level features such as color, texture and so on. Inspired by the successful use of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) in the visual recognition field, we used a data augmentation method for small data sets to gain the sufficient number of the training dataset. In this paper, we use low-level features (color and texture features) of the image to assist the extraction of advanced features (image object category features and deep emotion features of images), which are automatically learned by deep networks, to obtain more effective image sentiment features. Then, we use the stack sparse auto-encoding network to recognize the emotions evoked by the image. Finally, high-level semantic descriptive phrases including image emotions and objects are output. Our experiments are carried out on the IAPS and GAPED data sets of the dimension space and the artphoto data set of the discrete space. The measurement of bone mineral density for osteoporosis has always been the focus of researchers because it plays an important role in bone disease diagnosis. However, because of X-ray image noise and the large difference between the bone shapes of patients under the condition of low contrast, existing osteoporosis diagnosis algorithms are difficult to obtain satisfactory results. This paper presents an improved osteoporosis diagnosis algorithm based on U-NET network. Firstly, the bone in the original image are marked and used to construct the data set. And then, by normalizing the input of each layer, it can be ensured that the input data distribution of each layer is stable, so that the purpose of accelerated training can be achieved. Finally, the energy function is calculated by combining the value of the softmax prediction class for each pixel on the final feature map with the Cross entropy loss function and all the segmented images are extracted to obtain the diagnostic result. As the experimental results show that the improved U-net can accurately solve the influence of image interference in the process of bone mineral density measurement. Many current medical image segmentation methods utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs), with some extended U-Net-based networks relying on deep feature representations to achieve satisfactory results. However, due to the limited receptive fields of convolutional architectures, they are unable to explicitly model the varying range dependencies present in medical images. Recently, advancements in large kernel convolution have allowed for the extraction of a wider range of low frequency information, making this task more achievable. In this paper, we propose TBUnet for solving the problem of difficult to accurately segment lesions with heterogeneous structures and fuzzy borders, such as melanoma, colon polyps and breast cancer. The TBUnet is a pure convolutional network with three branches for extracting high frequency information, low frequency information, and boundary information, respectively. It is capable of extracting features in various areas. To fuse the feature maps from the three branches, TBUnet presents the FL (fusion layer) module, which is based on threshold and logical operation. We design the FE (feature enhancement) module on the skip-connection to emphasize the fine-grained features. In addition, our method varies the number of input channels in different branches at each stage of the network, so that the relationship between low and high frequency features can be learned. TBUnet yields 91.08 DSC on ISIC-2018 for melanoma segmentation, and achieves better performance than state-of-the-art medical image segmentation methods. Furthermore, experimental results with 82.48 DSC and 89.04 DSC obtained on the BUSI dataset and the Kvasir-SEG dataset show that TBUnet outperforms the advanced segmentation methods. Federated learning (FL), a relatively new area of research in medical image analysis, enables collaborative learning of a federated deep learning model without sharing the data of participating clients. In this paper, we propose FedDropoutAvg, a new federated learning approach for detection of tumor in images of colon tissue slides. The proposed method leverages the power of dropout, a commonly employed scheme to avoid overfitting in neural networks, in both client selection and federated averaging processes. We examine FedDropoutAvg against other FL benchmark algorithms for two different image classification tasks using a publicly available multi-site histopathology image dataset. We train and test the proposed model on a large dataset consisting of 1.2 million image tiles from 21 different sites. For testing the generalization of all models, we select held-out test sets from sites that were not used during training. We show that the proposed approach outperforms other FL methods and reduces the performance gap (to less than 3% in terms of AUC on independent test sites) between FL and a central deep learning model that requires all data to be shared for centralized training, demonstrating the potential of the proposed FedDropoutAvg model to be more generalizable than other state-of-the-art federated models. Mobile health (mHealth) intervention systems can employ adaptive strategies to interact with users. Instead of designing such complex strategies manually, reinforcement learning (RL) can be used to adaptively optimize intervention strategies concerning the user's context. In this paper, we focus on the issue of overwhelming interactions when learning a good adaptive strategy for the user in RL-based mHealth intervention agents. We present a data-driven approach integrating psychological insights and knowledge of historical data. It allows RL agents to optimize the strategy of delivering context-aware notifications from empirical data when counterfactual information (user responses when receiving notifications) is missing. Our approach also considers a constraint on the frequency of notifications, which reduces the interaction burden for users. We evaluated our approach in several simulation scenarios using real large-scale running data. In the past decades, the incidence rate of cancer has steadily risen. Although advances in early and accurate detection have increased cancer survival chances, these patients must cope with physical and psychological sequelae. The lack of personalized support and assistance after discharge may lead to a rapid diminution of their physical abilities, cognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life. This paper proposes a personalized support system for cancer survivors based on a cohort and trajectory analysis (CTA) module integrated within an agent-based personalized chatbot named EREBOTS. The CTA module relies on survival estimation models, machine learning, and deep learning techniques. It provides clinicians with supporting evidence for choosing a personalized treatment, while allowing patients to benefit from tailored suggestions adapted to their conditions and trajectories. The development of the CTA within the EREBOTS framework enables to effectively evaluate the significance of prognostic variables, detect patient's high-risk markers, and support treatment decisions. Due to lack of a central bureaucrat in mobile ad hoc networks, the security of the network becomes serious issue. During malicious attacks, according to the motivation of intruder the severity of the threat varies. It may lead to loss of data, energy or throughput. This paper proposes a lightweight Intruder Node Detection and Isolation Action mechanism (INDIA) using feature extraction, feature optimization and classification techniques. The indirect and direct trust features are extracted from each node and the total trust feature is computed by combining them. The trust features are extracted from each node of MANET and these features are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm as feature optimization technique. These optimized feature sets are then classified using Neural Networks (NN) classifier which identifies the intruder node. The performance of the proposed methodology is studied in terms of various parameters such as success rate in packet delivery, delay in communication and the amount of energy consumption for identifying and isolating the intruder. This paper presents an empirical study of a formative neural network-based assessment approach by using mobile technology to provide pharmacy students with intelligent diagnostic feedback. An unsupervised learning algorithm was integrated with an audience response system called SIDRA in order to generate states that collect some commonality in responses to questions and add diagnostic feedback for guided learning. A total of 89 pharmacy students enrolled on a Human Anatomy course were taught using two different teaching methods. Forty-four students employed intelligent SIDRA (i-SIDRA), whereas 45 students received the same training but without using i-SIDRA. A statistically significant difference was found between the experimental group (i-SIDRA) and the control group (traditional learning methodology), with T (87) = 6.598, p < 0.001. In four MCQs tests, the difference between the number of correct answers in the first attempt and in the last attempt was also studied. A global effect size of 0.644 was achieved in the meta-analysis carried out. The students expressed satisfaction with the content provided by i-SIDRA and the methodology used during the process of learning anatomy (M = 4.59). In this paper, considering year 2020 and Covid-19, we analyze medical imaging tools and their performance scores in accordance with the dataset size and their complexity. For this, we mainly consider AI-driven tools that employ two different types of image data, namely chest Computed Tomography (CT) and X-ray. We elaborate on their strengths and weaknesses by taking the following important factors into account: i) dataset size; ii) model fitting criteria (over-fitting and under-fitting); iii) transfer learning in the deep learning era; and iv) data augmentation. Medical imaging tools do not explicitly analyze model fitting. Also, using transfer learning, with fewer data, one could possibly build Covid-19 deep learning model but they are limited to education and training. We observe that, in both image modalities, neither the dataset size nor does data augmentation work well for Covid-19 screening purposes because a large dataset does not guarantee all possible Covid-19 manifestations and data augmentation does not create new Covid-19 cases. The main objective of this paper is to present a systematic analysis and review of the state of the art regarding the prediction of absenteeism and temporary incapacity using machine learning techniques. Moreover, the main contribution of this research is to reveal the most successful prediction models available in the literature. A systematic review of research papers published from 2010 to the present, related to the prediction of temporary disability and absenteeism in available in different research databases, is presented in this paper. The review focuses primarily on scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and ResearchGate. A total of 58 articles were obtained from which, after removing duplicates and applying the search criteria, 18 have been included in the review. In total, 44% of the articles were published in 2019, representing a significant growth in scientific work regarding these indicators. This study also evidenced the interest of several countries. In addition, 56% of the articles were found to base their study on regression methods, 33% in classification, and 11% in grouping. After this systematic review, the efficiency and usefulness of artificial neural networks in predicting absenteeism and temporary incapacity are demonstrated. The studies regarding absenteeism and temporary disability at work are mainly conducted in Brazil and India, which are responsible for 44% of the analyzed papers followed by Saudi Arabia, and Australia which represented 22%. ANNs are the most used method in both classification and regression models representing 83% and 80% of the analyzed works, respectively. Only 10% of the literature use SVM, which is the less used method in regression models. Moreover, Naïve Bayes is the less used method in classification models representing 17%. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a new imaging method that can be used to non-invasively measure the diffusion coefficient of water molecules in biological tissue structures in recent years. Since the DTI data is a tensor space, its segmentation is different from ordinary MRI images. Based on the existing deep learning model, an improved image semantic segmentation method based on super-pixels and conditional random field is proposed. Firstly, this paper uses the existing feature extraction model based on deep learning to obtain rough semantic segmentation results, including high-level semantic information of the image but lacking details of the image. In addition, the super-pixel segmentation algorithm is implemented to obtain super-pixels that carries more low-level information. Secondly, due to the lack of image details in rough segmentation results, the segmentation of the edge of the image is inaccurate. In this paper, a boundary optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the edge segmentation accuracy of the rough results. Finally, the use of super-pixels for local boundary optimization can improve the segmentation accuracy. Experiments results show that this segment is a practical and effective method. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a cardiac arrhythmia which is characterized based on the irregsular beating of atria, resulting in, the abnormal atrial patterns that are observed in the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. The early detection of this pathology is very helpful for minimizing the chances of stroke, other heart-related disorders, and coronary artery diseases. This paper proposes a novel method for the detection of AF pathology based on the analysis of the ECG signal. The method adopts a multi-rate cosine filter bank architecture for the evaluation of coefficients from the ECG signal at different subbands, in turn, the Fractional norm (FN) feature is evaluated from the extracted coefficients at each subband. Then, the AF detection is carried out using a deep learning approach known as the Hierarchical Extreme Learning Machine (H-ELM) from the FN features. The proposed method is evaluated by considering normal and AF pathological ECG signals from public databases. The experimental results reveal that the proposed multi-rate cosine filter bank based on FN features is effective for the detection of AF pathology with an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity values of 99.40%, 98.77%, and 100%, respectively. The performance of the proposed diagnostic features of the ECG signal is compared with other existing features for the detection of AF. There has been an increasing attention to the study of stress. Particularly, college students often experience high levels of stress that are linked to several negative outcomes concerning academic functioning, physical, and mental health. In this paper, we introduce the EuStress Solution, that aims to create an Information System to monitor and assess, continuously and in real-time, the stress levels of the students in order to predict burnout. The Information System will use a measuring instrument based on wearable device and machine learning techniques to collect and process stress-related data from the students without their explicit interaction. In the present study, we focus on heart rate and heart rate variability indices, by comparing baseline and stress condition. This paper dispenses an exhaustive review on deep learning techniques used in the prognosis of eight different neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders such as stroke, alzheimer, parkinson's, epilepsy, autism, migraine, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. These diseases are critical, life-threatening and in most of the cases may lead to other precarious human disorders. Deep learning techniques are emerging soft computing technique which has been lucratively used to unravel different real-life problems such as pattern recognition (Face, Emotion, and Speech), traffic management, drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and network intrusion detection. This study confers the discipline, frameworks, and methodologies used by different deep learning techniques to diagnose different human neurological disorders. Here, one hundred and thirty-six different articles related to neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders diagnosed using different deep learning techniques are studied. The morbidity and mortality rate of major neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders has also been delineated. The performance and publication trend of different deep learning techniques employed in the investigation of these diseases has been examined and analyzed. Different performance metrics like accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity have also been examined. The research implication, challenges and the future directions related to the study have also been highlighted. Eventually, the research breaches are identified and it is witnessed that there is more scope in the diagnosis of migraine, cerebral palsy and stroke using different deep learning models. Likewise, there is a potential opportunity to use and explore the performance of Restricted Boltzmann Machine, Deep Boltzmann Machine and Deep Belief Network for diagnosis of different human neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. With age, our blood vessels are prone to aging, which induces cardiovascular disease. As an important basis for diagnosing heart disease and evaluating heart function, the electrocardiogram (ECG) records cardiac physiological electrical activity. Abnormalities in cardiac physiological activity are directly reflected in the ECG. Thus, ECG research is conducive to heart disease diagnosis. Considering the complexity of arrhythmia detection, we present an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) model for accurate classification. Compared with the traditional machine learning methods, CNN requires no additional feature extraction steps due to the automatic feature processing layers. In this paper, an improved CNN is proposed to automatically classify the heartbeat of arrhythmia. Firstly, all the heartbeats are divided from the original signals. After segmentation, the ECG heartbeats can be inputted into the first convolutional layers. In the proposed structure, kernels with different sizes are used in each convolution layer, which takes full advantage of the features in different scales. Then a max-pooling layer followed. The outputs of the last pooling layer are merged and as the input to fully-connected layers. Our experiment is in accordance with the AAMI inter-patient standard, which included normal beats (N), supraventricular ectopic beats (S), ventricular ectopic beats (V), fusion beats (F), and unknown beats (Q). For verification, the MIT arrhythmia database is introduced to confirm the accuracy of the proposed method, then, comparative experiments are conducted. The experiment demonstrates that our proposed method has high performance for arrhythmia detection, the accuracy is 99.06%. The world population ageing is on the rise, which has led to an increase in the demand for medical care due to diseases and symptoms prevalent in health centers. One of the most prevalent symptoms prevalent in older adults is falls, which affect one-third of patients each year and often result in serious injuries that can lead to death. This paper describes the design of a fall detection system for elderly households living alone using very low resolution thermal sensor arrays. The algorithms implemented were LSTM, GRU, and Bi-LSTM; the last one mentioned being that which obtained the best results at 93% in accuracy. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women in worldwide. Early diagnosis of breast cancer improves the chance of survival by aiding proper clinical treatments. The digital mammography examination helps in diagnosing the breast cancer at its earlier stage. In this paper, Multiscale All Convolutional Neural Network (MA-CNN) is developed to assist the radiologist in diagnosing the breast cancer effectively. MA-CNN is a convolutional neural network-based approach that classifies mammogram images accurately. Convolutional neural networks are excellent in extracting the task specific features, since the feature learning is associated with classification task in order to attain the improved performance. The proposed approach automatically categorizes the mammographic images on mini-MIAS dataset into normal, malignant and benign classes. This model improves the accuracy of the classification system by fusing the wider context of information using multiscale filters without negotiating the computation speed. Experimental results show that MA-CNN is a powerful tool for diagnosing breast cancer by means of classifying the mammogram images with overall sensitivity of 96% and 0.99 AUC. Dermoscopy is a technique used to capture the images of skin, and these images are useful to analyze the different types of skin diseases. Malignant melanoma is a kind of skin cancer whose severity even leads to death. Earlier detection of melanoma prevents death and the clinicians can treat the patients to increase the chances of survival. Only few machine learning algorithms are developed to detect the melanoma using its features. This paper proposes a Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system which equips efficient algorithms to classify and predict the melanoma. Enhancement of the images are done using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization technique (CLAHE) and median filter. A new segmentation algorithm called Normalized Otsu's Segmentation (NOS) is implemented to segment the affected skin lesion from the normal skin, which overcomes the problem of variable illumination. Fifteen features are derived and extracted from the segmented images are fed into the proposed classification techniques like Deep Learning based Neural Networks and Hybrid Adaboost-Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. The proposed system is tested and validated with nearly 992 images (malignant & benign lesions) and it provides a high classification accuracy of 93 %. Traditional fecal erythrocyte detection is performed via a manual operation that is unsuitable because it depends significantly on the expertise of individual inspectors. To recognize human erythrocytes automatically and precisely, automatic segmentation is very important for extraction of characteristics. In addition, multiple recognition algorithms are also essential. This paper proposes an algorithm based on morphological segmentation and a fuzzy neural network. The morphological segmentation process comprises three operational steps: top-hat transformation, Otsu's method, and image binarization. Following initial screening by area and circularity, fuzzy c-means clustering and the neural network algorithms are used for secondary screening. Subsequently, the erythrocytes are screened by combining the results of five images obtained at different focal lengths. Experimental results show that even when the illumination, noise pollution, and position of the erythrocytes are different, they are all segmented and labeled accurately by the proposed method. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is one of the most catastrophic and life threatening health issue nowadays. Early detection of CVD is an important solution to reduce its devastating effects on health. In this paper, an efficient CVD detection algorithm is identified. The algorithm uses patient demographic data as inputs, along with several ECG signal features extracted automatically through signal processing techniques. Cross-validation results show a 98.29 % accuracy for the decision tree classification algorithm. The algorithm has been integrated into a web based system that can be used at anytime by patients to check their heart health status. At one end of the system is the ECG sensor attached to the patient's body, while at the other end is the detection algorithm. Coronary calcium detection in medicine image processing is a hot research topic. According to the low resolution and complex background in medicine image, an improved coronary calcium detection algorithm based on the Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) in Mimics is proposed in this paper. The algorithm firstly uses the aggregate channel feature model to preprocess the image to obtain the suspected calcium area, which greatly reduces the time of single-frame image detection. The basic network VGG-16 is replaced by Resnet-50, which introduces the identity mapping to solve the problem of reducing the detection accuracy when the number of network layers are increased. Finally, the powerful and flexible two-parameter loss function is used to optimize the training deep network and improve the network model generalization ability. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that the performance of the proposed detection algorithm exceeds the existing calcium detection algorithms, and the detection efficiency is improved while ensuring the accuracy of calcium detection. With the growing use of minimally invasive surgical procedures, endoscopic video archives are growing at a rapid pace. Efficient access to relevant content in such huge multimedia archives require compact and discriminative visual features for indexing and matching. In this paper, we present an effective method to represent images using salient convolutional features. Convolutional kernels from the first layer of a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) are analyzed and clustered into multiple distinct groups, based on their sensitivity to colors and textures. Dominant features detected by each cluster are collected into a single, layout-preserving feature map using a spatial maximal activator pooling (SMAP) approach. A moving window based structured pooling method then captures spatial layout features and global shape information from the aggregated feature map to populate feature histograms. Finally, individual histograms for each cluster are combined into a single comprehensive feature histogram. Clustering convolutional feature space allow extraction of color and texture features of varying strengths. Further, the SMAP approach enable us to select dominant discriminative features. The proposed features are compact and capable of conveniently outperforming several existing features extraction approaches in retrieval and classification tasks on endoscopy images dataset. In this paper, we have compared the classifier algorithms including C4.5 decision tree, le artificial neural network (ANN), artificial immune recognition system (AIRS), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), which is an important disease that affects both the right and the left cardiac ventricle. The goal of this study was to find the best classifier model on the diagnosis of OSAS. The clinical features were obtained from Polysomnography device as a diagnostic tool for obstructive sleep apnea in patients clinically suspected of suffering this disease in this study. The clinical features are arousals index, apnea–hypopnea index (AHI), SaO2 minimum value in stage of rapid eye movement, and percent sleep time in stage of SaO2 intervals bigger than 89%. In our experiments, a total of 83 patients (58 with a positive OSAS (AHI > 5) and 25 with a negative OSAS such that normal subjects) were examined. The decision support systems can help to physicians in the diagnosing of any disorder or disease using clues obtained from signal or images taken from subject having any disorder. In order to compare the used classifier algorithms, the mean square error, classification accuracy, area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), and sensitivity and specificity analysis have been used. The obtained AUC values of C4.5 decision tree, ANN, AIRS, and ANFIS classifiers are 0.971, 0.96, 0.96, and 0.922, respectively. This paper presents a comparative analysis of novel supervised fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (SF-ART), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and Multi Layer Perceptrons (MLP) neural networks over Ballistocardiogram (BCG) signal recognition. To extract essential features of the BCG signal, we applied Biorthogonal wavelets. SF-ART performs classification on two levels. At first level, pre-classifier which is self-organized fuzzy ART tuned for fast learning classifies the input data roughly to arbitrary (M) classes. At the second level, post-classification level, a special array called Affine Look-up Table (ALT) with M elements stores the labels of corresponding input samples in the address equal to the index of fuzzy ART winner. However, in running (testing) mode, the content of an ALT cell with address equal to the index of fuzzy ART winner output will be read. The read value declares the final class that input data belongs to. In this paper, we used two well-known patterns (IRIS and Vowel data) and a medical application (Ballistocardiogram data) to evaluate and check SF-ART stability, reliability, learning speed and computational load. Initial tests with BCG from six subjects (both healthy and unhealthy people) indicate that the SF-ART is capable to perform with a high classification performance, high learning speed (elapsed time for learning around half second), and very low computational load compared to the well-known neural networks such as MLP which needs minutes to learn the training material. Moreover, to extract essential features of the BCG signal, we applied Biorthogonal wavelets. The applied wavelet transform requires no prior knowledge of the statistical distribution of data samples. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal plays an important role in the diagnosis of epilepsy. The long-term EEG recordings of an epileptic patient obtained from the ambulatory recording systems contain a large volume of EEG data. Detection of the epileptic activity requires a time consuming analysis of the entire length of the EEG data by an expert. The traditional methods of analysis being tedious, many automated diagnostic systems for epilepsy have emerged in recent years. This paper discusses an automated diagnostic method for epileptic detection using a special type of recurrent neural network known as Elman network. The experiments are carried out by using time-domain as well as frequency-domain features of the EEG signal. Experimental results show that Elman network yields epileptic detection accuracy rates as high as 99.6% with a single input feature which is better than the results obtained by using other types of neural networks with two and more input features. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used widely in medicine and health care sector. In machine learning, the classification or prediction is a major field of AI. Today, the study of existing predictive models based on machine learning methods is extremely active. Doctors need accurate predictions for the outcomes of their patients' diseases. In addition, for accurate predictions, timing is another significant factor that influences treatment decisions. In this paper, existing predictive models in medicine and health care have critically reviewed. Furthermore, the most famous machine learning methods have explained, and the confusion between a statistical approach and machine learning has clarified. A review of related literature reveals that the predictions of existing predictive models differ even when the same dataset is used. The most important part of the early prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases is the estimation of the cardiometabolic risk (CMR). The CMR estimation can be divided into two phases. The first phase is called primary estimation of CMR (PE-CMR) and includes solely diagnostic methods that are non-invasive, easily-obtained, and low-cost. Since cardiovascular diseases are among the main causes of death in the world, it would be significant for regional health strategies to develop an intelligent software system for PE-CMR that would save time and money by extracting the persons with potentially higher CMR and conducting complete tests only on them. The development of such a software system has few limitations - dataset can be very large, data can not be collected at the same time and the same place (eg. data can be collected at different health institutions) and data of some other region are not applicable since every population has own features. This paper presents a MATLAB solution for PE-CMR based on the ensemble of well-learned artificial neural networks guided by evolutionary algorithm or shortly EANN-EA system. Early and accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging. Neuropathological studies using brain bank specimens have estimated that a large percentages of clinical diagnoses of PD may be incorrect especially in the early stages. In this paper, a comprehensive computer model is presented for the diagnosis of PD based on motor, non-motor, and neuroimaging features using the recently-developed enhanced probabilistic neural network (EPNN). The model is tested for differentiating PD patients from those with scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDDs) using the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) database, an observational, multi-center study designed to identify PD biomarkers for diagnosis and disease progression. The results are compared to four other commonly-used machine learning algorithms: the probabilistic neural network (PNN), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm, and classification tree (CT). The EPNN had the highest classification accuracy at 92.5 % followed by the PNN (91.6 %), k-NN (90.8 %) and CT (90.2 %). Energy profiling and estimation have been popular areas of research in multicore mobile architectures. While short sequences of system calls have been recognized by machine learning as pattern descriptions for anomalous detection, power consumption of running processes with respect to system-call patterns are not well studied. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy neural network (FNN) for training and analyzing process execution behaviour with respect to series of system calls, parameters and their power consumptions. On the basis of the patterns of a series of system calls, we develop a power estimation daemon (PED) to analyze and predict the energy consumption of the running process. In the initial stage, PED categorizes sequences of system calls as functional groups and predicts their energy consumptions by FNN. Existing brain region segmentation algorithms based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are inefficient for object boundary segmentation. In order to enhance the segmentation accuracy of brain tissue, this paper proposed an object region segmentation algorithm that combines pixel-level information and semantic information. Firstly, we extract semantic information by CNN with the attention module and get the coarse segmentation results through a specific pixel-level classifier. Then, we exploit conditional random fields to model the relationship between the underlying pixels so as to get local features. Finally, the semantic information and the local pixel-level information are respectively used as the unary potential and the binary potential of the Gibbs distribution, and the combination of both can obtain the fine region segmentation algorithm based on the fusion of pixel-level information and the semantic information. A large number of qualitative and quantitative test results show that our proposed algorithm has higher precision than the existing state-of-the-art deep feature models, which can better solve the problem of rough edge segmentation and produce good 3D visualization effect. As "the second eyes" of radiologists, computer-aided diagnosis systems play a significant role in nodule detection and diagnosis for lung cancer. In this paper, we aim to provide a systematic survey of state-of-the-art techniques (both traditional techniques and deep learning techniques) for nodule diagnosis from computed tomography images. This review first introduces the current progress and the popular structure used for nodule diagnosis. In particular, we provide a detailed overview of the five major stages in the computer-aided diagnosis systems: data acquisition, nodule segmentation, feature extraction, feature selection and nodule classification. Second, we provide a detailed report of the selected works and make a comprehensive comparison between selected works. The selected papers are from the IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, PubMed, and Web of Science databases up to December 2018. Third, we discuss and summarize the better techniques used in nodule diagnosis and indicate the existing future challenges in this field, such as improving the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and accuracy, developing new deep learning-based diagnosis techniques, building efficient feature sets (fusing traditional features and deep features), developing high-quality labeled databases with malignant and benign nodules and promoting the cooperation between medical organizations and academic institutions. The combination of big data and deep learning is a world-shattering technology that can make a great impact on any industry if used in a proper way. With the availability of large volume of health care datasets and progressions in deep learning techniques, systems are now well equipped in diagnosing many health problems. Utilizing the intensity of substantial historical information in electronic health record (EHR), we built up, a conventional predictive temporal model utilizing recurrent neural systems (RNN) like LSTM and connected to longitudinal time stepped EHR. Experience records were contribution to RNN to anticipate the analysis and prescription classes for a resulting visit during heart disappointment (e.g. diagnosis codes, drug codes or method codes). In this paper, we also investigated whether use of deep learning to model temporal relations among events in electronic health records (EHRs) would enhance the model performance in predicting initial diagnosis of heart failure (HF) compared to some of the traditional methods that disregard temporality. By examining these time stamped EHRs, we could recognize the associations between various diagnosis occasions and finally predicate when a patient is being analyzed for a disease. In any case, it is hard to access the current EHR data straightforwardly, since almost all data are sparse and not standardized. Along these lines, we proposed a robust model for prediction of heart failure. The fundamental commitment of this paper is to predict the failure of heart by means of a neural network model based on patient's electronic medicinal information. In order to, demonstrate the diagnosis events and prediction of heart failure, we used the medical concept vectors and the essential standards of a long short-term memory (LSTM) deep network model. The proposed LSTM model uses SiLU and tanh as activation function in the hidden layers and Softmax in output layer in the network. Bridgeout is used as a regularization technique for weight optimization throughout the network. Renal segmentation is one of the most fundamental and challenging task in computer aided diagnosis systems. In order to overcome the shortcomings of automatic kidney segmentation based on deep network for abdominal CT images, a two-stage semantic segmentation of kidney and space-occupying lesion area based on SCNN and ResNet models combined with SIFT-flow transformation is proposed in paper, which is divided into two stages: image retrieval and semantic segmentation. To facilitate the image retrieval, a metric learning-based approach is firstly adopted to construct a deep convolutional neural network structure using SCNN and ResNet network to extract image features and minimize the impact of interference factors on features, so as to obtain the ability to represent the abdominal CT scan image with the same angle under different imaging conditions. And then, SIFT Flow transformation is introduced, which adopts MRF to fuse label information, priori spatial information and smoothing information to establish the dense matching relationship of pixels so that the semantics can be transferred from the known image to the target image so as to obtain the semantic segmentation result of kidney and space-occupying lesion area. In order to validate effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on self-establish CT dataset, focus on kidney organ and most of which have tumors inside of the kidney, and abnormal deformed shape of kidney. The experimental results qualitatively and quantitatively show that the accuracy of kidney segmentation is greatly improved, and the key information of the proportioned tumor occupying a small area of the image are exhibited a good segmentation results. Skeletal bone age assessment is a widely used standard procedure in both disease detection and growth prediction for children in endocrinology. Conventional manual assessment methods mainly rely on personal experience in observing X-ray images of left hand and wrist to calculate bone age, which show some intrinsic limitations from low efficiency to unstable accuracy. To address these problems, some automated methods based on image processing or machine learning have been proposed, while their performances are not satisfying enough yet in assessment accuracy. Motivated by the remarkable success of deep learning (DL) techniques in the fields of image classification and speech recognition, we develop a deep automated skeletal bone age assessment model based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and support vector regression (SVR) using multiple kernel learning (MKL) algorithm to process heterogeneous features in this paper. This deep framework has been constructed, not only exploring the X-ray images of hand and twist but also some other heterogeneous information like race and gender. The experiment results prove its better performance with higher bone age assessment accuracy on two different data sets compared with the state of the art, indicating that the fused heterogeneous features provide a better description of the degree of bones' maturation. The Clinical Oncology of American Society report in 2016 predicted deaths are increased upto 9570 due to oral cancer. This cancer occurs due to abnormal tissue growth in the oral cavity. This cancer has limited symptoms, so, it has been difficult to recognize in the early stages. To reduce the death rate of this oral cavity cancer, an automatic system has been developed by applying the optimization techniques in both image processing and machine learning techniques. Even though these methods are successfully recognizing the cancer, the detection accuracy is still one of the major issues because of complex oral tissue structure. So, this paper introduces the Gravitational Search Optimized Echo state neural networks for predicting the oral cancer with effective manner. Initially the X-ray images are collected from the oral cancer database which contains several noises that has to be eliminated with the help of the adaptive wiener filter. Then the affected part has been segmented with the help of the enhanced Markov Stimulated Annealing and the features are derived from segmented region. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an eye disease, which affects the people who are all having the diabetes for more than 10 years. The ophthalmologist identifies when the dilated eye exam causes severe in any one of the following deviations in the retina: changes in blood vessels, leaking blood vessels, newly grown blood vessels, swelling of the macula, changes in the lens, and damages to the nerve tissue. It can eventually lead to vision loss. The early detection of DR prevents the cause of blindness. In this paper, we propose the retinal image segmentation and extraction of blood vessels by morphological processing, thresholding, edge detection, and adaptive histogram equalization. For the automatic diagnosis of DR from the fundus image, we also developed a network with the convolutional neural network architecture for accurately classifying its severity. By using high-end graphical processor unit (GPU), we trained this network on the publicly available dataset such as DRIVE, DIARETDB0, and DIARETDB1_v1, and the images collected from the Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, India. Accurate and reliable brain tumor segmentation is a critical component in cancer diagnosis. According to deep learning model, a novel brain tumor segmentation method is developed by integrating fully convolutional neural networks (FCNN) and dense micro-block difference feature (DMDF) into a unified framework so as to obtain segmentation results with appearance and spatial consistency. Firstly, we propose a local feature to describe the rotation invariant property of the texture. In order to deal with the change of rotation and scale in texture image, Fisher vector encoding method is used to analyze the texture feature, which can combine with the scale information without increasing the dimension of the local feature. The obtained local features have strong robustness to rotation and gray intensity variation. Then, the non-quantifiable local feature is fused to the FCNN to perform fine boundary segmentation. Since brain tumors occupy a small portion of the image, deconvolutional layers are designed with skip connections to obtain a high quality feature map. Compared with the traditional MRI brain tumor segmentation methods, the experimental results show that the segmentation accuracy and stability has been greatly improved. In this paper, a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system based on three-dimensional (3D) feature extraction is introduced to detect lung nodules. First, eight directional search was applied in order to extract regions of interests (ROIs). Then, 3D feature extraction was performed which includes 3D connected component labeling, straightness calculation, thickness calculation, determining the middle slice, vertical and horizontal widths calculation, regularity calculation, and calculation of vertical and horizontal black pixel ratios. To make a decision for each ROI, feed forward neural networks (NN), support vector machines (SVM), naïve Bayes (NB) and logistic regression (LR) methods were used. These methods were trained and tested via k-fold cross validation, and results were compared. To test the performance of the proposed system, 11 cases, which were taken from Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC) dataset, were used. Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is often diagnosed via magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Due to low resolution, noise and difficulty is actually seeing the tumor in the images, especially by examining only a single image, there has been very little development of automated systems for cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis. This paper presents a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the automated preliminary detection of the tumor using a single MRCP image. The multi-stage system employs algorithms and techniques that correspond to the radiological diagnosis characteristics employed by doctors. A popular artificial neural network, the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), is used for decision making to differentiate images with cholangiocarcinoma from those without. The test results achieved was 94% when differentiating only healthy and tumor images, and 88% in a robust multi-disease test where the system had to identify the tumor images from a large set of images containing common biliary diseases. Millions of people are diagnosed every year with a chest disease in the world. Chronic obstructive pulmonary and pneumonia diseases are two of the most important chest diseases. And these are very common illnesses in Turkey. In this paper, a comparative study on chronic obstructive pulmonary and pneumonia diseases diagnosis was realized by using neural networks and artificial immune systems. For this purpose, three different neural networks structures and one artificial immune system were used. Used neural network structures in this study were multilayer, probabilistic, and learning vector quantization neural networks. The results of the study were compared with the results of the pervious similar studies reported focusing on chronic obstructive pulmonary and pneumonia diseases diagnosis. This paper presents the new automated detection method for electrocardiogram (ECG) arrhythmias. The detection system is implemented with integration of complex valued feature extraction and classification parts. In feature extraction phase of proposed method, the feature values for each arrhythmia are extracted using complex discrete wavelet transform (CWT). The aim of using CWT is to compress data and to reduce training time of network without decreasing accuracy rate. Obtained complex valued features are used as input to the complex valued artificial neural network (CVANN) for classification of ECG arrhythmias. Ten types of the ECG arrhythmias used in this study were selected from MIT-BIH ECG Arrhythmias Database. Two different classification tasks were performed by the proposed method. In first classification task (CT-1), whether CWT-CVANN can distinguish ECG arrhythmia from normal sinus rhythm was examined one by one. For this purpose, nine classifiers were improved and executed in CT-1. Second classification task (CT-2) was to recognize ten different ECG arrhythmias by one complex valued classifier with ten outputs. Training and test sets were formed by mixing the arrhythmias in a certain order. Accuracy rates were obtained as 99.8% (averaged) and 99.2% for the first and second classification tasks, respectively. Recent advances in digital imaging technology have greatly enhanced the interpretation of critical/pathology conditions from the 2-dimensional medical images. This has become realistic due to the existence of the computer aided diagnostic tool. A computer aided diagnostic (CAD) tool generally possesses components like preprocessing, identification/selection of region of interest, extraction of typical features and finally an efficient classification system. This paper enumerates on development of CAD tool for classification of chronic liver disease through the 2-D image acquired from ultrasonic device. Characterization of tissue through qualitative treatment leads to the detection of abnormality which is not viable through qualitative visual inspection by the radiologist. Common liver diseases are the indicators of changes in tissue elasticity. One can show the detection of normal, fatty or malignant condition based on the application of CAD tool thereby, further investigation required by radiologist can be avoided. The proposed work involves an optimal block analysis (64 × 64) of the liver image of actual size 256 × 256 by incorporating Gabor wavelet transform which does the texture classification through automated mode. Statistical features such as gray level mean as well as variance values are estimated after this preprocessing mode. A non-linear back propagation neural network (BPNN) is applied for classifying the normal (vs) fatty and normal (vs) malignant liver which yields a classification accuracy of 96.8%. Further multi classification is also performed and a classification accuracy of 94% is obtained. It can be concluded that the proposed CAD can be used as an expert system to aid the automated diagnosis of liver diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
