The aim of this study is to find out more about how the immigrant community is being integrated socio-linguistically into the city of Madrid. It takes as its premise that integration is a bi-directional process conditioned directly by the beliefs, values and attitudes of both the immigrant and the host communities (Moreno Fernández, Francisco. 2009. "Integración sociolingüística en contextos de inmigración: marco epistemológico para su estudio en España." Lengua y Migración / Language and Migration 1 (1): 121–156). At its different structural levels, the host community can be regarded as a glottopolitical agent which shapes and explains the attitudes and behaviour immigrants might adopt when resolving inter-group conflicts. We present here the preliminary results of a study of the sociolinguistic attitudes of Madrilenians living in the city of Madrid to the immigrant population within their community. Our aim is to explore how immigration is perceived by the host community and thereby to determine how that community is conditioning the process of social, and therefore linguistic, integration of the immigrant population, with particular attention to the role of language as a key component in that process. Singlish – ‘the name given to the colloquial variety of English spoken in Singapore’ [Wee, Lionel. 2014. “Linguistic Chutzpah and the Speak Good Singlish Movement.”World Englishes33 (1): 85–99], incorporating Chinese dialect (particularly Hokkien) and Malay lexical and grammatical elements – has for some time been the antagonist in a cultural war of linguistic prescription (which has also targeted Chinese dialects) waged by the government. Some scholars have pointed out that apart from contestations about grammaticality and ‘brokenness', Singlish is also the site of contestation about identity politics in a post-colonial national setting. In more recent years, with the rise of discourses in social media critical of some government policies, as well as the increasing contestation of Singaporean identity in a transnational era, Singlish has increasingly been mobilised to mount a more grim note of sociopolitical discontent. This role is reinforced by Singlish's status as a creole of ‘the body', an affective discourse of visceral responses that thus defines an entrenched and conservative local community and identity. Conceptions of identity in multilingual multicultural societies still seem to be dominated by the perception that human beings are born into social locations and categories of ethnicity that are pre-existing. This fails to acknowledge the current reality for the progeny of interracial marriages, who may find themselves belonging neither to their father's nor to their mother's social location. While a strong emerging literature in hybridity considers the complexities of race and ethnicity for those born into these positions, little literature exists that examines the role of parents, particularly white, dominant culture mothers, who must help their children negotiate a path they have not trod. This paper examines the role of white birth mothers of non-white children in terms of their language, culture, and education decisions, illuminating whether and how they were able to help their children develop respect for and facility with the two languages, two cultures, and two worldviews they live within, while also documenting their struggles to do so.
