Using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as an alternative to conventional methods in the preparation of porous biodegradable polymer and polymer/nanocomposites for tissue engineering has attracted increasing interest in recent years due to the absence of using organic solvents and the ability to incorporate thermosensitive biologicals without loss of bioactivity. Additionally, scCO2 can exert a high level of control over porosity and morphology of scaffolds by tuning the processing parameters. This paper describes the newly achievements on the preparation of porous polymer materials using scCO2 foaming technology with focus on the porous biodegradable materials and its nanocomposites relevant to tissue engineering. It is not the first time in human history, nor will it be the last for that matter, that a collective problem calls for a collective response. Climate change fueled by greenhouse emissions affects humankind alike. Despite the disagreement among policymakers and scientists on the severity of the issue, the truth is that the problem remains. A broad look at different technologies being used today in different fields has led to the idea of bringing them together in an attempt to offer a viable solution to reducing anthropogenic CO2. The following paper describes how the nanotechnologies, available or soon to be available, would make CO2 capture, cache, and conversion (coined the three Cs) a valid way for achieving a more sustainable energy society. Authors also set out to highlight with this work how knowledge transfer is instrumental in the development of technology and how methodical assessment of crossovers can expedite research when time plays against us. In this work, 31.4 wt.% Ni/SBA-15 (Ni/SBA-15) nonpromoted and alkalized with ammonia solution and by MgO promoter catalysts were prepared and used for combined steam and CO2 reforming of CH4 (bireforming). Effect of concentration of ammonia solution (NH3(aq)) (10–25 vol.%) and Mg content (3–12 wt.%) on the properties of the Ni/SBA-15 catalysts was investigated by low-angle and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-BET isothermal adsorption, SEM, TEM, EDS mapping, H2-TPR, and CO2-TPD methods. The performance of the catalysts in bireforming was assessed in the temperature range of 550–800°C. The enhancement of dispersion of NiO particles, reducibility, and basicity of alkalized Ni/SBA-15 catalysts were responsible for improving the catalytic performance of this catalyst. The results revealed that the Ni/SBA-15 treated with 15-25% NH3(aq) solution and promoted with 3-9% Mg exhibited high activity for CH4 conversion. Meanwhile, Ni6Mg/SBA-15 showed the highest CO2 conversion. Among tested catalysts, Ni/SBA-15-20NH3 and Ni9Mg/SBA-15 samples had an almost equal activity with a CH4 conversion of nearly 97% and a CO2 conversion of about 84% at 700°C thanks to its moderate affinity with both CO2 and CH4. However, the H2/CO ratio of the product mixture remained at 2.02 on the Ni/SBA-15-20NH3 catalyst and almost 1 on the Ni9Mg/SBA-15 sample. These results might be related to the fact that the alkalization of the Ni/SBA-15 catalyst by NH3(aq) solution had an advantage over using MgO because side reactions were unlikely to occur. Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the adsorption and blockage properties of a 3D graphene membrane. Specifically, we are interested in the mixtures of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), two of the most relevant pollutant gases for the anthropogenic effect in global warming. We simulate cases with distinct proportion of gases in the mixture. Our results indicate that the 3D graphene slit is able to absorb 90% or more of the gas molecules. We show that this property came from the fact that both CO2 and SO2 molecules are attracted by the graphene pore, which compensates for the entropic barrier that exists when leaving the bulk state to the confined state. Also, the simulation results show that changing the interlayer separation between the graphene sheets is possible in order to change the membrane properties, from absorbent to blockage. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) was synthesized from a mixture of aqueous Bi(NO3)3 and NH4VO3 solutions by using hydrothermal method. Via conducting the orthogonal experiments and single-factor experiments, the best synthetic parameters were determined. The physical and photophysical properties of the as-obtained samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-Vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The result showed that the best experimental parameters of monoclinic BiVO4 were pH = 7, T = 195 °C, and t = 6 h. The catalytic performance of BiVO4 was evaluated by reducing carbon dioxide to methane under visible light irradiation. It was found that the methane production reached 145 μg/g-cat after 5 h irradiation with the catalyst dosage of 0.15 g in 200mL mixed solution of 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M Na2SO3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supercritical antisolvent precipitation is a relatively recent technology which can be used for controlled preparation of polymer particles from solutions. This is done by the addition of an antisolvent to a polymer solution causing supersaturation of the polymer, especially under supercritical conditions. The particle size of the precipitates can be adjusted mainly by the rate of supersaturation. Spherical xylan or mannan particles having a narrow particle size distribution were precipitated from hemicellulose solutions in dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO) or DMSO/water mixtures by carbon dioxide as an antisolvent. By depending on the type of hemicellulose, the DMSO/H2O ratio, and the precipitation conditions such as pressure and temperature, the resulting particle size can be adjusted within a wide range from less than 0.1 to more than 5 μm. Nano- and microstructured native xylans and mannans as obtained can be used in many applications such as encapsulation of active compounds, slow release agents, or chromatographic separation materials.
