Abstract

A general approach is developed for preparing fused cyclic systems containing medium-sized rings, where the key steps have involved a diastereoface-selective Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles attached to a furanosugar with cyclopentadiene and ring opening (ROM)-ring closing metathesis (RCM) of the resulting norbornene derivatives. ROM-RCM of the norbornene derivatives with GrubbsE catalyst has afforded the cis-syn-cis and cis-anti-cis bicycle-annulated sugars containing 7-9 membered rings.
