The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of an in situ-generated azomethine ylide and an electron deficient acetylene leads to the production of a new benzoylpyrrole FPL 64176. Mesoionic 1,3-oxazole is used for the cycloaddition which is obtained in situ by the acetic anhydride-induced tandem acetylation-cyclodehydration of substituted amino acids. The synthesis of the benzoylpyrrole occurs in four linear steps and the 4-nitrophenethyl is used as a protecting group.

Halogenation of hexamethylhexaazatriphenylene (HAT) using bromine or sulfuryl chloride produces symmetrically substituted hexakis(dihalomethyl) HAT derivatives. Multinuclear NMR experiments help characterize the products. Mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis help confirm the structures of these derivatives.
