An efficient regioselective synthesis of trisubstituted 2(or 6)-arylaminopyrimidine-5-carbaldehydes is developed through an [S.sub.N]Ar reaction of 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde with aniline, methylamine and alkoxide nucleophiles by using phase-transfer catalysis and [S.sub.N]Ar reaction conditions. The fused-bicyclic compounds are derivatized by using the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction to generate electronically and structurally unique G[logical and]C base precursors.

The preparation of a tetracyclic self-complementary molecule for self-assembly into rosette nanotubes is described. An efficient approach is described to access the multifunctional pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine intermediate under mild conditions by using three regioselective [S.sub.N]Ar reactions at C2, C4 and C7 on the trichloro compound.

The article reports the synthesis and characterization of eleven self-complementary G^C derivatives having hydrophobic moieties. These compounds are found to be more soluble in polar organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, and nitromethane due to presence of protonated nitrogen.
