Research was conducted to examine tuning stereoselection in tethered Biginelli condensations which can be tuned to yield trans or cis stereoisomer of 1-oxo- and 1-iminohexahydropyrrolo(1,2-c)pyrimidines. When condensation is performed in the presence of polyphosphate ester, trans stereoselection occurs while cis stereoselection takes place when the condensation is done under Knoevenagel conditions. Results demonstrate that stereoselectivity is highest in the N-sulfonylguanidine series.

A study was conducted on the synthesis of 1-substituted and 1,4-disubstituted 2,3-di-O-benzyl-1,6-anhydrogalactofuranoses starting from a 1,6-anhydro-D-galactopyranose derivative. The synthesis began with the seven-step preparation of a known alcohol from beta-D-galactose pentaacetate. 1-substituted and 1,4-disubstituted 2,3-di-O-benzyl-1,6-anhydrogalactofuranoses was found to have potential for the synthesis of squalestatins and zaragozic acids.

The article describes a high-yielding procedure to prepare (3S)-N,N-1,7-bis-tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-hydroxyspermidine. Results indicate that the enantiospecific synthesis proceeds by way of two isolated and purified intermediates.
