Tritrichomonas foetus is the causative agent of bovine trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease in cattle that can result in large profit losses for cattle producers. Increasing reports have suggested that T. foetus is also the causative agent of large-bowel diarrhea in cats. To determine if the trichomonads recovered from the reproductive tract of cattle and the large intestine of cats can thrive in the same host, 2 groups of virgin Angus heifers were inoculated with T. foetus. The first group of heifers was inoculated with a bovine T. foetus isolate cultured from a naturally infected cow, and heifers in the second group were inoculated with T. foetus organisms cultured from the feces of a naturally infected cat. Over an 11-wk period, vaginal, cervical, and uterine mucus samples were analyzed, along with a single transcervical uterine biopsy sample, to determine organism and disease presence. The mucus and biopsy samples collected from each group indicate that the disease caused by feline and bovine isolates of T. foetus are comparable, but not identical.

Piscicolid leeches from the Bering Sea that had been removed from Lycodes raridens in 1977 were examined histologically. Developmental stages of a haemogregarine blood parasite of fish were found in the intestinal ceca and in salivary tissues. The developmental sequence, including gametogenesis and sporogony followed by intestinal merogonic development and anteriad migration, was the same as is known for Haemogregarina (sensu lato) myoxocephali of Atlantic sculpins. Merozoites with perinuclear crystalloid inclusions were found in the dorsal blood vessel, interstitially between the blood vessel and salivary cells and within both the somata and ductules of salivary cells. This confirms the importance of rhynchobdellid leech circulatory anatomy in facilitating the transmission of apicomplexan parasites. The lack of distinguishing characteristics precludes assigning a specific name to this parasite and may be indicative of frustrations that will be encountered in future revisions of the systematics of the genus Haemogregarina.

Tissue cysts of Neospora caninum were found in sections of brain from a stillborn pygmy goat. The tissue cysts had 1-2-microns-thick cyst walls and stained with anti-N. caninum serum in an immunohistochemical test. Glial nodules, mononuclear perivascular cuffing, and foci of inflammation were associated with N. caninum tissue cysts throughout the brain. This report indicates that N. caninum can be transmitted transplacentally in goats.

During May to August 1988, the prevalence of Lankesterella minima in bullfrog tadpoles and adults in the vicinity of Lake Sasajewun, Algonquin Park, Ontario, was 54.8% and 29.4%, respectively. The parasite was transmitted to laboratory-reared tadpoles through the bite of experimentally infected, laboratory-reared leeches (Batracobdella picta). Intraerythrocytic sporozoites were observed in the experimentally infected tadpoles 36 days postexposure (PE) to leech bites. Sporogonic stages in these tadpoles were examined by light and electron microscopy. Oocysts developed in vascular endothelial cells of several organs. Multinucleate oocysts at 29 days PE lay in a parasitophorous vacuole and contained several large inclusions. Mature oocysts, observed 32 days PE, contained about 70 sporozoites that exhibited typical apicomplexan features. In the posterior region of the sporozoites, 12 helically arranged chains of electron-lucent intrapellicular extended anteriorly from a dense terminal ring.

Transplacental transmission of Neospora caninum was studied in 2 pregnant cats (queens). Queen 1 was inoculated subcutaneously with 2 x 10(6) cell culture-derived N. caninum tachyzoites on day 47 of gestation. She gave birth to a full-term kitten on the 17th day after inoculation. The kitten died the second day after birth due to generalized N. caninum infection. The mother cat was killed on the third day after parturition and was found to have a macerated kitten in the uterus. Severe placentitis, metritis, hepatitis, and nephritis due to N. caninum were seen in tissues from the queen. Queen 2 was fed N. caninum tissue cysts and mated 111 days later. She gave birth to 3 healthy full-term kittens. The kittens were necropsied at 2, 22, and 30 days of age. Neospora caninum was recovered from the organs and was seen in histologic sections in 1 of the 3 kittens. Results indicate that N. caninum can be transplacentally transmitted in cats during acute and chronic stages of infection. Neospora caninum-specific IgG antibodies were demonstrated in the sera of inoculated cats and nursing kittens.

Two of five opossums examined from the Kansas City area were found to be infected with Besnoitia darlingi. Inoculation of cysts resulted in acute lethal infections in mice and hamsters. Chronic infections with development of tissue cysts were obtained in mice by prophylaxis with sulfadiazine. Cysts were fed to cats and a dog which resulted in the shedding of isosporoid oocysts by cats. The prepatent period was 11 to 14 days. Unsporulated oocysts averaged 11.9 by 12.3 micrometer and sporulated in 48 to 72 hr. Mouse-to-mouse tramsmission was achieved by injecting triturated tissue containing cysts. This is the third species of Besonitia to be cyclically transmitted by cats.
