Purpose: To compare minimally invasive strabismus surgery (MISS) with conventional strabismus surgery for horizontal recti in terms of functional outcome and complications. Methods: A total of 40 patients requiring surgery for horizontal recti were divided into two groups: those undergoing MISS and those operated on using the conventional limbal technique. In the MISS group, two small keyhole radial cuts were made superior and inferior to the insertion of the muscle margin. Keyhole cut size was almost 1 mm less than the amount of muscle recessed or resected. Results: There were significant differences in conjunctival redness and swelling in both groups on postoperative days 1 and 7 and week 3. However, after the third week, both groups had a similar appearance. Visual acuity was decreased at postoperative day 1 in both groups, but the difference was not significant. No significant differences were found for final alignment, binocular single vision, other visual acuities, refractive changes, or complications. Conclusions: This study shows that this new, small incision, minimal dissection technique is feasible. The MISS technique seems to be superior in the immediate postoperative period because there were fewer conjunctival and eyelid swelling complications. Purpose: To evaluate the clinical manifestations of epiblepharon in Korean children and the relationship between this condition and body mass index. Methods: In a retrospective case-control study, 223 children 6 to 1.5 years of age treated surgically for epiblepharon were studied and compared with an age-matched control group of 264 children. Data on age, sex, weight, height, and recurrence were recorded. Results: Mean age of the patients was 8.63 ± 4.43 years. Lower eyelids were commonly involved bilaterally. Chief complaints included ocular discomfort, eye rubbing, visual disturbances, photophobia, and epiphora. Minimal resection of orbicularis oculi with full-thickness eyelid rotatory suture for epiblepharon was performed on 223 patients. The body mass index in girls 12 to 15 years old with epiblepharon was significantly higher than that in children without epiblepharon (P < .05). There was a statistically significant correlation between the incidence of epiblepharon and obesity with aging in girls (P < .05). Reoperation was performed on 12 patients (4.4%) because of recurrence of corneal irritation with inverted eyelashes. Clinical factors such as sex, age, and body mass index did not affect the rate of recurrence. Conclusion: Epiblepharon is one of the most common eyelid abnormalities among Asian children. Purpose: To review the clinical observations in the management of congenital eyelid coloboma. Methods: Fifty-one cases of congenital eyelid colobomas including the functional and cosmetic rehabilitation of patients who were treated over a period of 18 years with an average follow-up of 4.7 years were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Thirty-eight patients had an upper eyelid coloboma and 13 patients had a lower eyelid coloboma. Systemic associations included Goldenhar syndrome and Treacher-Collins--Franceschetti syndrome. Twenty-two patients with upper eyelid colobomas underwent surgery by direct apposition, eyelid sharing procedures, or a lateral rotation flap. Lower eyelid colobomas were repaired in 4 patients. Conclusion: Gratifying cosmetic and functional results could be achieved in all 26 patients who underwent surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many children present with excessive blinking. Categorization, associated conditions, and prognosis are controversial. Methods: All children with excessive blinking were reviewed, excluding those with known uveitis, glaucoma, or obvious eyelid abnormalities. Parents were telephoned for follow-up. Results: No ocular pathology was identified in 31 of 34 children with excessive blinking (91%). Parents were able to report a specific cause of blinking in 7 (21%). In 24 of 34 (71%), parents reported complete resolution of excessive blinking. No new ophthalmologic diagnoses were uncovered on follow-up. Conclusions: Episodes of excessive blinking rarely indicate neurologic disorders and frequently resolve spontaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Congenital bilateral upper eyelid eversion is a rare, benign condition that often resolves spontaneously without permanent sequelae. Traumatic rupture of the superior oblique tendon is a rare cause of acquired Brown's syndrome. This report describes a case of traumatic rupture of the superior oblique tendon, distal to the trochlea, after injury with a plant hook. The ruptured tendon was reapproximated. Postoperatively, asymptomatic Brown's syndrome developed, although residual function of the superior oblique muscle was retained. Full-thickness upper eyelid lacerations, especially those caused by a hook, must be explored carefully to exclude superior oblique tendon rupture. The authors report for the first time two cases of upper eyelid entropion secondary to neonatal conjunctivitis that resolved spontaneously following the insertion of a bandage contact lens. The article describes a case of iatrogenic structural anomaly of the eyelid in a 14-month-old boy with a one-month history of dystonic movements. Magnetic resonance images indicate a right-sided ocular structural anomaly as a hypointense area between the cornea and upper eyelid in the boy. The cause of the structural abnormality may have been iatrogenic secondary to taping of the eyelid.
