Abstract An important exploration breakthrough has been achieved in the western subsag of the Bozhong subbasin, but the hydrocarbon accumulation mechanism was not clear. The hydrocarbon migration and accumulation mechanism of the western subsag of the Bozhong subbasin is discussed based on the modeling of hydrocarbon migration pathways and the study of late-stage reactivation of neotectonic faults. Three processes for lateral petroleum migration and accumulation can be recognized in the studied area: 1) migration and accumulation along the T8 unconformity; 2) migration and accumulation within the Guantao Formaiton (N 1 g); and 3) interaction of migration and accumulation along the T8 unconformity and Guantao Formation (N 1 g). The reactivation of faults in the studied area began 5.1 Ma. Following hydrocarbon lateral migration, late-stage reactivated neotectonic faults serve as effective vertical conduits for hydrocarbon migration and accumulation into the shallow Minghuazhen Formation (N 1 m) reservoirs. The modeling results of preferential petroleum migration pathways (PPMPs) and favorable accumulation areas are consistent with the actual exploration results. Two kinds of potential exploration targets can be predicted in the northwestern Bozhong subbasin: the first kind is hydrocarbon accumulation areas near or within generative kitchens (e.g. Target 1); the other kind is hydrocarbon accumulation areas removed from the generative kitchens, but with hydrocarbon sourcing from multiple generative kitchen and numerous PPMPs (e.g. Target 2). Studying preferential petroleum migration pathways will help reduce exploration risk. The distribution and development of faults and fractures in organic-rich shales are important factors for the accumulation or loss of shale gas. In this work, merged three-dimensional seismic data, automated fault extraction, imaging logging, rock core examination, micro-CT scans, and field emission scanning electron microscopy were used to precisely characterize the distribution of faults and fractures of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales from the Zilichang Block, Jiaoshiba area. The effects of faults and fractures on the accumulation and loss of shale gas were analyzed. The results show that the microfractures of shale samples from the JYA well of the Zilichang Block mainly consisted of intergranular, intragranular, and contraction fractures, and the fracture porosity of the samples is approximately 1.24%. These fractures help to increase the storage space of the shale reservoirs and are conducive for shale gas accumulation. In micro-CT scans, the microfractures were linked in a network-like structure and generally had excellent connectivity. Therefore, the microfractures could enhance the seepage capacity of the shale reservoirs and help the shale gas to migrate to hydraulically induced fractures. As a result, the productivity of the shale reservoirs could be dramatically improved. Macroscopic fractures were found to play a key role in the storage of shale gas. Many natural fractures, mainly are faults and open fractures, have developed in the caprock strata that directly overly the main production layers shales. The shale gas direct seal conditions are poor, which is not conducive to shale gas accumulation. Therefore, the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales in the JYA well is a relatively open shale system, with a formation pressure coefficient and gas saturation value of 0.96 and 37%, respectively. The single-well hydraulic fracturing productivity of the JYA well is low, with an absolute open flow value less than 0.5 × 104 m3/d. • Multiscale faults and fractures were identified. • Faults and macrofractures cause the loss of shale gas. • Microfractures enhance the seepage capacity of shale gas. The Northwestern Sichuan Basin is a hot spot for natural gas exploration, and in recent years, many wells have obtained high-yield commercial gas flows in the Qixia Formation. However, due to the influence of foreland orogeny, the oil and gas in the Qixia Formation often have the characteristics of multisource filling, multistage accumulation and multistage transformation, which results in an unclear understanding of the gas source and the accumulation process. This paper uses the concept of sub-block research through carbon isotope and biomarkers analyses, to carry out gas-gas, gas-source and bitumen-source rock comparisons in different structural belts to determine the natural gas sources. On this basis, basin simulation and fluid inclusion analysis technology are used to determine the stage of hydrocarbon accumulation, and then the accumulation process is determined. Studies have shown that the gas source of the Qixia Formation are different in the different structural belts: (1) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the thrust nappe belt mainly originates from the Qiongzhusi Formation source rock; (2) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the hidden fault belt is a mixture of the source rock of the Qixia Formation and the source rock of the Qiongzhusi Formation; and (3) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the gentle belt mainly originates from the Middle Permian source rock and the Upper Permian Longtan Formation source rock. The Indosinian, Yanshania, and Himalayan movements all have great influence on the formation of the Qixia Formation reservoir in northwestern Sichuan, and the accumulation process of the different structural belts is quite different, but generally, the accumulation process of the different structural belts have experienced three stages: a primary oil pool stage, gas pool stage and reformation and definition stage. • Through sub-block research, gas source of the foreland thrust belt is studied. • Different gas sources cause differences in carbon isotopes. • Accumulation process of each structural belt is distinct. • The results have implications for exploration in complex tectonic areas.
