Two diazaporphyrin (DAP)-porphyrin hetero dimers, in β-meso and β-β configurations, were prepared to study their photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer properties. The two meso nitrogen atoms in the porphyrin ring of DAP change its redox potential, making DAP more easily reduced, compared to its porphyrin counterpart. A charge-transfer from porphyrin to DAP in both hetero dimers was verified by versatile optical spectroscopic methods. The steady-state fluorescence spectra indicated an efficient intramolecular exciplex formation for both dimers. For the β-meso dimer, ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopic methods revealed the subpicosecond formation of two types of primary short-living (1-18 ps) intramolecular exciplexes, which relaxed in toluene to form a long-living final exciplex (1.4 ns) followed by a longer-living charge transfer complex (>5 ns). However, in benzonitrile, the lifetime of the final exciplex was longer (660 ps) as was that of the charge transfer complex (180 ps). The β-β analogue formed similar short-living exciplexes in both solvents, but the final exciplex and the charge transfer state had significantly shorter lifetimes. The electrochemical redox potential measurements and density functional theory calculations supported the proposed mechanism.

Good solvent effects of C(70) cluster formations and their electron-transporting and photoelectrochemical properties have been systematically examined for the first time. Nano-to-micrometer scale assemblies of C(70) with different morphologies were prepared by rapidly injecting poor solvent (i.e., acetonitrile) into a solution of C(70) dissolved in various good solvents (i.e., benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, etc). The cluster morphology engineering was successfully achieved by changing the good solvent, yielding the spherical, rodlike, or platelike clusters in the mixed solvents. The clusters of C(70) were electrophoretically deposited onto a nanostructured SnO(2) electrode to examine the photoelectrochemical properties under the white light or monochromatic light illumination. The maximum incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) varied from 0.8 to 10% depending on the combinations of the poor-good solvents. The differences in the IPCE values are discussed in terms of the surface area, thickness, and electron mobility of the deposited cluster films. The electron mobility is found to be the most predominant factor for the IPCE, indicating the importance of the electron-transporting process in the overall photocurrent generation. In addition, the electron mobility is closely correlated with the underlying molecular alignment and the resultant cluster structure. Thus, these results will provide basic clue for the design of C(70)-based molecular devices including the organic photovoltaics.

Substituent effects of porphyrin on the structures and photophysical properties of the J-aggregates of protonated 5-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin have been examined for the first time. Selective formation of the porphyrin J-aggregate was attained when suitable length of the alkoxy group was employed for the amphiphilic porphyrin. Namely, a regular leaflike structure was observed for the J-aggregates of protonated 5-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, which was consistent with the results obtained by using the UV-visible absorption and dynamic light-scattering measurements. A bilayer structure in which the hydrophobic alkoxyl groups facing inside the bilayer are interdigitated to each other, whereas the hydrophilic porphyrin moieties are exposed outside, was proposed to explain the unique porphyrin J-aggregate. Fast energy migration and efficient quenching by defect site in the J-aggregates were suggested to rationalize the short lifetimes of the excited J-aggregates.

Electroabsorption and electrofluorescence spectra of a fullerene derivative, C60(C18)2, and its mixture with zinc-tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) have been measured by using electric field modulation spectroscopy. The change in dipole moment is significant in the electroabsorption spectra both of C60(C18)2 and of a complex composed of C60(C18)2 and ZnTPP, indicating that the excited states both of C60(C18)2 and of a complex between C60(C18)2 and ZnTPP have a large charge-transfer character. The fluorescence quantum yield of C60(C18)2 decreases in the presence of an electric field, which probably arises from the field-induced acceleration of the intramolecular nonradiative process of C60(C18)2 in the fluorescent state. In a mixture between ZnTPP and C60(C18)2, electrofluorescence spectra show the field-induced enhancement for the fluorescence of ZnTPP and the field-induced de-enhancement for the fluorescence both of C60(C18)2 and of the complex between ZnTPP and C60(C18)2. A theoretical analysis clearly shows that the field-induced enhancement of the ZnTPP fluorescence in a mixture results from the field-induced deceleration of the rate of the electron transfer from the excited ZnTPP to C60(C18)2. The standard free energy gap for the photoinduced electron-transfer process is estimated based on the theoretical simulation of the field-dependent fluorescence intensity.

We fabricated porphyrin thin films on mica surfaces from acidic aqueous solutions of the preorganized H-aggregates of amphiphilic porphyrins by the simple spin-coating method. The morphological and spectroscopic properties of the film were investigated by scanning near-field optical microscopy. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the preorganized structure in solution can be transferred as a thin film with a thickness of the monolayer level without losing their substantial structure and photophysical properties.

Synthetic giant multiporphyrin arrays with well-defined architectures are reviewed in terms of artificial light-harvesting materials. Meso,meso-linked porphyrin arrays and multiporphyrin dendrimers have successfully mimicked the light-harvesting function of bacterial photosynthetic systems. We have also developed novel multiporphyrin-modified metal nanoclusters where porphyrins employed as a light-harvesting unit are well organized onto metal nanoclusters by self-assembly processes. Multiporphyrin-modified metal nanoclusters have been applied to photocatalyses and photovoltaic cells. In particular, they have been assembled with fullerenes step-by-step to make large, uniform clusters on nanostructured semiconductor electrodes, which exhibit a high power-conversion efficiency close to 1%. These systems provide valuable information on the design of porphyrin molecular assemblies that can be tailored to construct molecular photonic devices as well as artificial photosynthetic systems.
