Rate theories have found great utility across the chemical sciences by providing a physically transparent way to analyze dynamical processes. Here we demonstrate the benefits of using transition state theory and Marcus theory to study the rate of proton transfer in HCl solutions. By using long ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we show that good agreement is obtained between these two different formulations of rate theory and how they can be used to study the pathways and lifetime of proton transfer in aqueous solution. Since both rate theory formulations utilize identical sets of molecular data, this provides a self-consistent theoretical picture of the rates of aqueous phase proton transfer. Specifically, we isolate and quantify the rates of proton transfer, ion-pair dissociation, and solvent exchange in concentrated HCl solutions. Our analysis predicts a concentration dependence to both proton transfer and ion-pairing. Moreover, our estimate of the lifetime for the Zundel species is 0.8 and 1.3 ps for 2 M and 8 M HCl, respectively. We demonstrate that concentration effects can indeed be quantified through the combination of state-of-the-art simulation and theory and provides a picture of the important correlations between the cation (hydronium) and the counterion in acid solutions.

The (meta)stability of low water activity sodium hydroxide/aluminate (Na + OH - /Al(OH) 4 - ) electrolytes dictates kinetics in the Bayer process for aluminum refining and high-level nuclear waste processing. We utilized quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR) in extremely concentrated sodium aluminate solutions to investigate the picosecond (ps) to microsecond (ms) timescale motions of H-bearing species (Al(OH) 4 - monomers/clusters, OH - and H 2 O). In the QENS data, in contrast to typical liquids, no short-time translational diffusion was observed at 293 K, but two types of localized motions were found: (i) local backbone tumbling or a formation of large hydrated ion clusters on the order of 40-60 ps; and (ii) much slower, complex, and collective dynamics of the ensemble of H-bearing species on the order of 350-750 ps. Variable temperature, pulsed field gradient, diffusion-ordered 1 H NMR was used to determine the ensemble translational motion along with relaxometry to calculate rotational correlation coefficients. The ensemble rotational correlation times were on the order of 184-300 ps from 1 H NMR, which is consistent with the timescale of the QENS components. Complementary molecular dynamics simulation of NaOH solutions exhibit extensive ion networks potentially responsible for the observed dynamical coupling of water with the motion of large hydrated ion clusters. Understanding these collective motions will aid in predicting the behavior of complex solutions during aluminum production and during nuclear waste processing.

Pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) measurements were successfully applied to the 27 Al ( I = 5/2) nucleus in concentrated electrolytes to investigate the diffusion of aluminate ions [Al(OH) 4 - ] in simulant high-level nuclear waste (3 M NaOH) between 25 and 85 °C. The temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients obtained from 1 H, 23 Na, and 27 Al PFG-NMR were well fit by a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann model and a power law equation. Comparison of 27 Al diffusion coefficients of 0.1 M Al(OH) 4 - in ∼3 M MOH (where M = Na + , K + , (CH 3 ) 4 N + ) at room temperature varied in agreement with the expected changes in solution viscosity via Stokes-Einstein relationship, confirming that the dominant Al species at these conditions are Al(OH) 4 - monomers. This 27 Al PFG-NMR study extends an established methodology to a previously unexplored nucleus enabling this experimental technique to be leverage for exploring ion transport, speciation, and solution structure in concentrated electrolytes.

The characterization of prenucleation species is essential to understand crystallization mechanisms across many chemical systems and often involves the use of vibrational spectroscopy. Nowhere is this more evident than in the development of "green" aluminum processing technologies, where detailed understanding of the speciation of aluminum and its polynuclear analogues in highly alkaline, low water solutions is elusive. The aluminate anion Al(OH) 4 - predominates in alkaline conditions, yet equilibrium with dimeric species, either μ-oxo Al 2 O(OH) 6 2- or di-μ-hydroxo Al 2 (OH) 8 2- , can be assumed. Using ab initio molecular dynamics with full solvation and the presence of counterions, this work reconciles previous contradictory studies that had concluded only a single species under relevant solution conditions. We reveal that the two dimers are energetically separated by 2 kcal/mol in pure water but that the stability of each can be reversed by ion pairing expected in saturated salt solutions. Simulated Raman and IR spectra for each species (accounting for anharmonicity and the fluctuating solvating environment) provide the first proof that the considered species are "spectroscopic siblings", whose multiple overlapping bands prevent definitive assertions in terms of speciation when compared to the experimental spectra. These observations are likely to hold in higher order aluminate oligomers and as such present a massive challenge toward understanding the crystallization mechanisms relevant to aluminum processing.

Understanding the nature of ionic hydration at a fundamental level has eluded scientists despite intense interest for nearly a century. In particular, the microscopic origins of the asymmetry of ion solvation thermodynamics with respect to the sign of the ionic charge remains a mystery. Here, we determine the response of accurate quantum mechanical water models to strong nanoscale solvation forces arising from excluded volumes and ionic electrostatic fields. This is compared to the predictions of two important limiting classes of classical models of water with fixed point changes, differing in their treatment of "lone pair" electrons. Using the quantum water model as our standard of accuracy, we find that a single fixed classical treatment of lone pair electrons cannot accurately describe solvation of both apolar and cationic solutes, emphasizing the need for a more flexible description of local electronic effects in solvation processes. However, we explicitly show that all water models studied respond to weak long-ranged electrostatic perturbations in a manner that follows macroscopic dielectric continuum models, as would be expected. We emphasize the importance of these findings in the context of realistic ion models, using density functional theory and empirical models, and discuss the implications of our results for quantitatively accurate reduced descriptions of solvation in dielectric media.

We present an analysis of the dynamics of ion-pairing of lithium fluoride (LiF) in aqueous solvent using both detailed molecular simulation as well as reduced models within a generalized Langevin equation (GLE) framework. We explored the sensitivity of the ion-pairing phenomena to the details of descriptions of molecular interaction, comparing two empirical potentials to explicit quantum based density functional theory. We find quantitative differences in the potentials of mean force for ion-pairing as well as time dependent frictions that lead to variations in the rate constant and reactive flux correlation functions. These details reflect differences in solvent response to ion-pairing between different representations of molecular interaction and influence anharmonicity of the dynamic response. We find that the short-time anharmonic response is recovered with a GLE parametrization. Recovery of the details of long time response may require extensions to the reduced model. We show that the utility of using a reduced model leads to a straightforward application of variational transition state theory concepts to the condensed phase system. The significance of this is reflected in the analysis of committor distributions and the variation of planar hypersurfaces, leading to an improved understanding of factors that determine the rate of LiF ion-pairing.

Understanding fundamental nanoassembly processes on intermediate scales between molecular and continuum scales requires an in-depth analysis of the coupling between particle interactions and molecular details. This is because the discrete nature of the solvent becomes comparable to the characteristic length scales of assembly. Utilizing the spatial density response of a solvent to a surface in conjunction with the Clausius-Mossotti equation, we present a simple theory relating the discrete nature of solvent to dispersion interactions. Our study reveals that dispersion interactions are indeed sensitive to the spatial variation of solvent density, manifesting in dramatic deviations in van der Waals forces from the conventional formulation (e.g., with uniform solvent density). This study provides the first steps toward relating molecular scale principles, namely the detailed nature of solvent response to an interface, to the underlying hydration forces between surfaces.

For strong acids, like hydrochloric acid, the complete dissociation into an excess proton and conjugated base as well as the formation of independent solvated charged fragments is assumed. The existence of chloride-hydronium (Cl(-)···H3O(+)) contact ion pairs even in moderate concentration hydrochloric acid (2.5 m) demonstrates that the counterions do not behave merely as spectators. Through comparison of recent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements to state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we are able to obtain a unique view into the molecular structure of medium-to-high concentrated electrolytes. Here we report that the Cl(-)···H3O(+) contact ion pair structure persists throughout the entire concentration range studied and that these structures differ significantly from moieties studied in microsolvated hydrochloric acid gas phase clusters. Characterizing distinct populations of these ion pairs gives rise to a novel molecular level description of how to view the reaction network for acid dissociation and how it relates to our picture of acid-base equilibria.

Reorientational correlation times of various amine bases (namely, pyridine, 2,6-lutidine, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine) and organic solvents (dichloromethane, toluene) were determined by solution-state NMR relaxation time measurements and compared with predictions from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The amine bases are reagents in complex reactions catalyzed by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP), which display remarkable activity in metal-free H2 scission. The comparison of measured and simulated correlation times is a key test of the ability of recent MD and quantum electronic structure calculations to elucidate the mechanism of FLP activity. Correlation times were found to be in the range of 1.4-3.4 (NMR) and 1.23-5.28 ps (MD) for the amines and 0.9-2.3 (NMR) and 0.2-1.7 ps (MD) for the solvent molecules.

We have resolved the inconsistency in quantifying the surface potential at the liquid-vapor interface when using explicit ab initio electronic charge density and effective atomic partial charge models of liquid water. This is related, in part, to the fact that the resulting electric potentials from partial-charge models and ab initio charge distributions are quite different except for those regions of space between the molecules. We show that the electrostatic surface potential from a quantum mechanical charge distribution compares well to high-energy electron diffraction and electron holography measurements, as opposed to the comparison with electrochemical measurements. We suggest that certain regions of space be excluded when comparing computed surface potentials with electrochemical measurements. This work describes a novel interpretation of ab initio computed surface potentials through high-energy electron holography measurements as useful benchmarks toward a better understanding of electrochemistry.

A comprehensive analysis of the H(2)O structure about aqueous iodide (I(-)) is reported from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements. This study establishes the essential ingredients of an interaction potential that reproduces the experimentally determined first-solvation shell of aqueous iodide. XAFS spectra from the iodide K, L(1), and L(3) edges were corefined to establish the complete structure of the first hydration shell about aqueous iodide. Further, we have utilized molecular dynamics simulations employing both DFT (+dispersion) and empirical polarizable interaction potentials to generate an ensemble of structures that were directly compared to the XAFS data. Our results indicate that DFT-MD simulations provide a description of the molecular structure that is more consistent with the XAFS experimental data. The experimental data yield approximately 6.3 water molecules located at I-H and I-O distances of 2.65 and 3.50 Å, respectively. The differences in the two interaction potentials can be traced to the treatment of the electronic charge density in the vicinity of the iodide. The empirical polarizable interaction potential yields a significantly higher induced dipole for the aqueous iodide than the DFT study. The lower induced dipole moment from the DFT simulation produces a higher coordination number and leads to a more symmetric solvation environment than that produced by the empirical polarizable interaction potential. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding of second-shell water with the first-shell water establishes a strong ordering of the water about the iodide surface.

Water ice usually is thought to have zero pyroelectricity by symmetry. However, biasing it with ions breaks the symmetry because of the induced partial dipole alignment. This unmasks a large pyroelectricity. Ions were soft-landed upon 1 mum films of water ice at temperatures greater than 160 K. When cooled below 140-150 K, the dipole alignment locks in. Work function measurements of these films then show high and reversible pyroelectric activity from 30 to 150 K. For an initial approximately 10 V induced by the deposited ions at 160 K, the observed bias below 150 K varies approximately as 10 Vx(T/150 K)2. This implies that water has pyroelectric coefficients as large as that of many commercial pyroelectrics, such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The pyroelectricity of water ice, not previously reported, is in reasonable agreement with that predicted using harmonic analysis of a model system of SPC ice. The pyroelectricity is observed in crystalline and compact amorphous ice, deuterated or not. This implies that for water ice between 0 and 150 K (such as astrophysical ices), temperature changes can induce strong electric fields (approximately 10 MV/m) that can influence their chemistry, ion trajectories, or binding.

This paper presents recent advances in the use of molecular simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, which enable us to understand solvated ions in solution. We report and discuss the EXAFS spectra and related properties governing solvation processes of different ions in water and methanol. Molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories are coupled to electron scattering simulations to generate the MD-EXAFS spectra, which are found to be in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental measurements. From these simulated spectra, the ion-oxygen distances for the first hydration shell are in agreement with experiment within 0.05-0.1 A. The ionic species studied range from monovalent to divalent, positive and negative: K+, Ca2+, and Cl-. This work demonstrates that the combination of MD-EXAFS and the corresponding experimental measurement provides a powerful tool in the analysis of the solvation structure of aqueous ionic solutions. We also investigate the value of electronic structure analysis of small aqueous clusters as a benchmark to the empirical potentials. In a novel computational approach, we determine the Debye-Waller factors for Ca2+, K+, and Cl- in water by combining the harmonic analysis of data obtained from electronic structure calculations on finite ion-water clusters, providing excellent agreement with the experimental values, and discuss how they compare with results from a harmonic classical statistical mechanical analysis of an empirical potential.
