This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of soybean and wheat and the relationship with grain yield and biometric components after lime and phosphogypsum (GY) reapplication. Treatments consisted of two lime application methods, surface liming and incorporated liming, to different levels of base saturation (BS) (44, 70, and 90%), in addition to surface liming to 70% BS associated with a standard dose (70GY1) or double dose (70GY2) of GY. Treatments were applied in 2012 and reapplied in 2016. The results refer to the 2018/2019 soybean season and the 2019 wheat season. Lime + GY treatment increased leaf area, plant height, leaf dry matter, and stem dry matter in soybean but had no effect on specific leaf area (235.4 cm2 g−1), stem diameter (6.08 mm), number of pods per plant (71.7), grain number per plant (165), or thousand grain weight (117 g). Liming to 90% BS reduced leaf manganese contents in both crops and leaf iron content in soybean. GY application improved the calcium status of both crops and the sulfur status of soybean. However, 70GY2 reduced leaf magnesium contents in soybean and wheat. Soil tillage without lime reduced wheat yield by 12% compared with no-till. Soybean yield correlated positively with leaf nitrogen (0.79), leaf phosphorus (0.91), leaf area (0.62), and thousand grain weight (0.65), whereas wheat yield correlated with leaf phosphorus (0.83), calcium (0.75), and sulfur (0.74). Several studies have recommended balanced fertilization for increased and sustainable maize productivity in northern Ghana. However, the effectiveness of balanced fertilization in strongly acid soils is unknown. We conducted nutrient omission trials on strongly acid soils in four communities in northern Ghana to quantify impact of balanced fertilization and its synergism with liming on maize productivity. We evaluated the following treatments, each with and without liming: (i) balanced fertilization (BF), which contained all essential limiting nutrients, (ii) BF without sulfur (minus-S), (iii) BF without zinc (minus-Zn), (iv) BF without boron (minus-B), (v) NPK-only, and (vi) control. Without liming, maize yield was generally low (ranging from 0.4 to 2.2 t ha−1) and followed the order: minus-Zn > NPK-only > BF = Minus-S = Minus-B > Control. However, regardless of fertilization treatment, liming significantly increased maize productivity with grain yields ranging from 0.7 to 4.2 t ha−1, with BF having the greatest yield. With liming, the minus-Zn treatment resulted in a ≥ 30% yield decrease, compared to BF. The combined data suggest that in strongly acid soils, unless lime is applied, addition of micronutrients to NPK fertilizers would not have the desired effect on maize productivity. Without lime application to such soils, omission of Zn from BF in will not only reduce production cost but could have a positive impact on maize productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of liming on soil fertility, growth, nutrition and production of red pitaya (Hylocereus monacanthus) plants cultivated in pot. The experiment was conducted in blocks, with five doses of limestone (0.0; 0.6; 1.2; 1.8; and 2.5 t ha−1) and four replicates. Corrective doses were established to achieve base saturation of 20 to 70%. Liming increased soil pH (4.5 to 6.7), Ca concentration (5.36 to 20.11 mmolc dm−3), Mg concentration (4.36 to 16.53 mmolc dm−3) and base saturation (23.69 to 72.61%) and reduced potential acidity (37.39 to 15.41 mmolc dm−3). Liming reduces nitrogen concentration and increased phosphorus, calcium and sulfur concentrations in the cladodes. There was an increase in phosphorus concentration and decrease in boron and iron concentrations in fruit peel according to the increase in limestone doses; in the pulp, there was an increase in boron concentration and decrease in iron and zinc concentrations, from the lowest to the highest dose of limestone. Based on the principal component analysis, the limestone dose of 1.8 t ha−1 increased base saturation to 59%, providing favorable chemical conditions for the growth and productivity of red pitaya. Less uptake of zinc (Zn) in maize is a serious issue when cultivated in lime soils. The higher concentration of lime significantly affects soil pH. It also minimized the phyto-available pool of micronutrients, i.e., Zn, iron (Fe), copper (Cu), in soil. In these micronutrients, the balance uptake of Zn and its enrichment in maize has prime importance. Application methods and sources of Zn application can overcome this problem. The current study was conducted to assess soil and foliar application's efficacious functioning toward improvement in Zn uptake and dry matter production of maize Two sources of Zn (zinc-methionine and zinc sulfate) were applied at the rate of 5 mg Zn kg−1, 0,2% Zn. Results showed that soil + foliar Zn methionine performed significantly better than all other treatments for increase in dry weight of maize in lime-rich and poor soils. A significant increase in Zn concentration of maize signified soil + foliar Zn methionine's imperative functioning over all the treatments in lime-rich and poor soils. However, results also showed that both sources of Zn application via soil and foliar caused a significant decline in Fe, Cu and Mn concentration in maize in lime-rich and poor soils. On an average, in lime-rich and poor soils, performance was better in lime-poor soils over lime-rich soils. A field experiment was conducted at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Mandya to evaluate the effect of biochar, lime and fertilizer on soil acidity and microbiological properties in an acidic soil. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with seven treatments and three replications. The results revealed that application of fertilizer based on the soil test value (STV) either in combination with biochar or lime influenced soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN), dehydrogenase, urease and phosphatase activities significantly. Similarly, application of STV-based fertilizer along with biochar+FYM (Farm Yard Manure) + ZnSO4 significantly decreased exchangeable aluminum, exchangeable acidity and total acidity as compared with recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) + FYM+ ZnSO4 treatment. The grain yield of rice was increased by 37.90% in STV + biochar + FYM + ZnSO4 and by 22.87% in STV + lime +FYM + ZnSO4 plots than RDF + FYM + ZnSO4 plot. Seed and haulm yield of cowpea increased by 33.57% and 18.53% in STV + biochar + FYM + ZnSO4 treatments as compared with RDF + FYM + ZnSO4 treatment. Exchangeable aluminum and exchangeable acidity were found to be negatively correlated with yield of rice (r = -0.179) and cowpea (r = -0.266). However, yield of rice and cowpea showed the significantly and positively correlated with microbiological properties. A field experiment was conducted during Kharif and Summer seasons for two consecutive years of 2016-17 and 2017-18 with rice (Oryza sativa L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.), grown in a sequence at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Mandya on an acid soil to study the effect of biochar, lime and mangala setright on yield, nutrient uptake and fertility status of an acidic soil. Application of biochar along with soil test value based fertilizer (STV) + FYM + ZnSO4 influenced the productivity of rice and cowpea of 104.82 q ha−1 and 2474.77 kg ha−1, respectively and the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by rice (107.72, 28.16 and 69.34 kg ha−1, respectively) and cowpea (68.06, 5.86 and 38.67 kg ha−1, respectively) significantly, which was found on par with application of biochar along with RDF + FYM + ZnSO4. The soil pH (6.01), organic carbon content (5.03 g kg−1) and available nitrogen (340.45 kg ha−1), phosphorus (39.45 kg ha−1) and potassium (166.45 kg ha−1) significantly increased through the integrated use of biochar, FYM, ZnSO4 and fertilizers. Yield and soil properties like soil pH, organic carbon content and available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium significantly increased with application of lime and mangala setright as compared to farmer's practice. Highest net income and benefit:cost ratio (2.65) was obtained with integration of soil test value based fertilizer application, FYM and biochar. The effects of Kocuria E43, Alcaligenes 637Ca and Pseudomonas 53/6 on combined lime and salinity stress in the soil were evaluated on strawberry cv. 'Sweet Ann'. The results of the experiment showed that yield, average number and weight of fruit, leaf area, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) content of leaves, SPAD, stomatal conductance, membrane stability, protein and proline contents, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity were considerably affected by rhizobacterial inoculations in strawberry plants. There was a remarkable enhancement in fruit weight, number and yield, leaf area, macro elements contents of leaves, SPAD, stomatal conductance, protein and proline contents and CAT, SOD and APX activity. On the other hand, the sodium content of leaves, membrane permeability, H2O2 and MDA contents were considerably reduced by rhizobacterial treatment. The 637Ca had the highest yield per plant (120.4 g), while the lowest value was found in the control (89.9 g). Average increases in N, P and Ca contents in the leaf were obtained from rhizobacterial root inoculations of 16%, 35% and 32%, respectively. The lowest stomatal conductance was found in the control (67 mmol/m2s), while E43 + 53/6 had the highest (384 mmol/m2s). The highest CAT, SOD and APX activity were obtained from 637Ca + 53/6 (563 µmol min−1 mg−1 FW), E43 + 637Ca + 53/6 (399 µmol min−1 mg−1 FW) and E43 + 637Ca (31.91 µmol min−1 mg−1 FW), respectively. These results suggested that the 637Ca, E43 + 53/6 and E43 + 637Ca + 53/6 treatments may be effective in reducing the negative impacts of combined salinity and high calcareous in soil. The present study on the long-term effect of fertilizers, farmyard manure and lime on changes in soil properties and wheat productivity was carried out at Himchal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur (India). The soil was acidic in reaction and classified taxonomically as Typic Hapludalf. Soil samples, collected from two depths viz., 0–0.15 m and 0.15–0.30 m after the harvesting of wheat (2015–2016) were analyzed for different soil properties. Regular use of optimal dose of chemical fertilizers and farmyard manure influenced bulk density, porosity, water holding capacity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, mean weight diameter, pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, DTPA extractable iron, zinc, copper and manganese, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen and dehydrogenase activity of soil significantly. Highest grain yield of wheat (30.34 q ha−1) was recorded at 100% NPK + FYM which was at par with 100% NPK + lime (27.89 q ha−1). The study aimed at investigating effects of lime and mineral P fertilizers on P uptake and growth of maize (Zea mays subsp.) in greenhouse pot experiment. Combination of four P rates and four lime rates were applied to four highly acidic soil samples and the soils were incubated for a total of 112 days after which maize (Zea mays subsp.) was planted. The maize plants were harvested for analysis after 42 days of growth. Control experiments were also included. Available P (Bray I) and pH were significantly increased after incubation. Maximum available P was obtained in the soils that received the highest P rate and optimum lime rate. Levels of exchangeable acidity were significantly decreased in the P and lime treated soils compared to the control experiments. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of six extractants for available boron in acid soils undergoing to liming, and to correlate the results of soil analysis with foliar response seen in the teak plants in greenhouse conditions. Acid soil samples were collected and their chemical characterization was performed using standard analysis protocols. Later, agricultural lime was added to the experimental units in greenhouse conditions in order to control the soil acidity and these were incubated for 30 days. Six extracts for available boron were evaluated and correlated with response in the plant by foliar analysis. It is concluded that a high dissolution power of boron extractant solution produces a high sensitive in the determination of the changes of boron concentration in the limed acid soil. Applying lime to ameliorate soil acidity has been observed to induce manganese (Mn) deficiency in canola (Brassica napusL.) crops grown on acid sandy soils near Albany and gravelly acid sands of the Great Southern Districts of southwestern Australia. These soils were often Mn-deficient in patches for wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) production when they were newly cleared for agriculture requiring application of Mn fertilizer to ensure grain yields were not reduced by the deficiency. Since then, these soils have acidified and in the 1990s, canola started to be grown on these soils in rotation with wheat and lupins (Lupinus angustifoliusL.). These limed soils may now have become marginal to deficient in Mn for canola production. The effect of liming may change the effectiveness of fertilizer Mn. In addition, the effect of liming on the residual value of Mn fertilizer applied to these soils for canola production is unknown. Therefore, a glasshouse experiment was conducted using Mn deficient sand. Three levels of finely-powdered calcium carbonate were added and incubated in moist soil for 42 days at 22±2°C to produce 3 soils with different pH values [1:5 soil:0.01 M calcium chloride (CaCl2)]: 4.9 (original soil), 6.3, and 7.5. Five Mn levels, as solutions of Mn sulfate, were then added and incubated in moist soil for 0, 50, and 100 days before sowing canola. To estimate the residual value (RV) of incubated Mn for canola production, the effectiveness of the incubated Mn was calculated relative to the effectiveness of Mn applied just before sowing canola (freshly-applied Mn). The RV of the incubated Mn was determined using yield of dried canola shoots, the Mn application level required to produce 90% of the maximum shoot yield, and Mn content in dried shoots (Mn concentration in shoots multiplied by yield of dried shoots). As measured using both yield of dried shoots and Mn content of dried shoots, the residual value of Mn decreased with increasing soil pH and with increasing period of incubation of Mn with moist soil. The critical Mn concentration, for 90% of the total yield of dried canola shoots, was (mg Mn kg−1) ∼17 in youngest mature growth (apex and youngest emerged leaf, YMG), and ∼22 for the rest of dried shoots. These values were similar to current critical values for un-limed soils suggesting critical Mn concentrations remain the same for limed soils. Plant testing of canola is recommended if soils are to be limed to ameliorate soil acidity. When plant tests indicate a high likelihood of Mn deficiency, foliar Mn sprays need to be applied to that crop to ensure Mn deficiency does not reduce grain production that year, and fertilizer Mn needs to be re-applied to the soil when sowing the next crop to reduce the likelihood of Mn deficiency for subsequent crops. Upland rice is an important crop in the cropping systems of South America, including Brazil. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine influence of lime and gypsum on yield and yield components of upland rice and changes in the chemical properties of an Oxisol. The lime rates used were 0, 0.71, 1.42, 2.14, 2.85, and 4.28 g kg−1soil. The gypsum rates were 0, 0.28, 0.57, 1.14, 1.71, and 2.28 g kg−1. Lime as well as gypsum significantly increased plant height, straw and grain yield, and panicle density in a quadratic fashion. Adequate lime and gypsum rates for maximum grain yield were 1.11 g kg−1and 1.13 g kg−1, respectively. Plant height, straw yield, and panicle density were positively related to grain yield. Lime as well as gypsum application significantly changed extractable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), hydrogen (H)+aluminum (Al), base saturation, and effective cation exchange capacity. In addition, liming also significantly increased pH, extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), calcium saturation, magnesium saturation, and potassium saturation. Optimum acidity indices for the grain yield of upland rice were pH 6.0, Ca 1.7 cmolckg−1, base saturation 60%, and calcium saturation 47%. Productivity of resources on acid soils occupying one fourth of the total area in India is abysmally low. Lime is applied to such soils with the primary objective of increasing the productivity of crops by enhancing the availability of native and applied plant nutrients. Greenhouse pot experiments and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of lime and boron (B) on the availability of nutrients in soils and their uptake by plants. The application of lime enhanced the available nitrogen (N,), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), and zinc (Zn) content in soils, which was reflected in their uptake by sunflower (Helianthus annus). On the contrary, availability of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in soil was reduced due to liming. Sunflower responded very well in terms of dry matter yield to B application to the extent of 175% and 188% under 1 and 2 mg kg−1applied levels of B, respectively. Dry matter yield of sunflower was reduced to the tune of 29.2 and 42.7% under 2/3 and 1 lime requirement (LR), respectively, over control. Most soils in the Prairie Provinces of Canada are deficient in plant-available nitrogen (N), and many soils in the Parkland region also contain insufficient amounts of plant-available sulfur (S) for high crop production. A field experiment with perennial grass stand was conducted to determine the effects of long-term annual N (112 kg N ha-1), S (11 kg S ha-1) and potassium (K) (40 kg K ha-1) fertilization, and one-time lime application on forage dry matter yield (DMY) and soil properties [pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and N (TON), and light fraction organic C (LFOC) and N (LFON)] on a Dark Gray Chernozem (Boralfic Boroll) loam at Canwood in north-central Saskatchewan, Canada. The experiment had surface-broadcast annual treatments of no fertilizer (Nil), N, S, NS, and NSK fertilizers from 1980 to 2002, and one-time lime application in 1992 to bring soil pH to about 7. Application of N or S alone had only a little effect on DMY compared to unfertilized Nil treatment, while application of both NS together substantially increased DMY, and forage yield was further increased when K was also applied (NSK). The DMY following one-time liming was greater in limed plots than in unlimed plots for at least 10 years. Decline of soil pH by fertilization mainly happened in the 0-10 cm depth with N only, and in the 0-5 cm layer with NS treatment, whereas these treatments tended to increase soil pH in layers below 10 cm. One-time surface application of granular lime increased soil pH, mainly in the 0-5 cm layer, and the effect was maintained for at least 9 years. Mass of TOC, TON, LFOC, and LFON in different soil layers increased with combined applications of N and S fertilizers (NS), but the effect was much more pronounced in the 0-7.5 cm soil layer, and also varied with organic fraction. Light organic fractions were more responsive to applied NS than total organic fractions. The findings suggest that application of N and S together was effective in sustaining high forage yield and increasing C and N sequestration in a soil deficient in both N and S. Alfalfa is one of the most demanding crops in terms of soil fertility. Limestone application is an efficient method of increasing the alfalfa crop yield. This study evaluates the effect of liming on the soil fertility and consequent nutritional state and shoot dry weight yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa cv. 'Crioula'), grown in pots containing Typic Quartzipisamment soil (savanna phase), in a completely randomized experimental design with repeated measurements over time (cross sections), in two cuttings, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of four limestone rates (0, 3.8, 6.6 and 10.3 t ha-1). The results showed that the greatest estimated shoot dry weight yield in first and second cuttings were obtained with estimated rate of 6.4 t ha-1 and 9.0 t ha-1. The root yield and nitrogen (N) concentration in the nodules was directly related to the soil acidity. In alfalfa, it is necessary at each cutting to closely follow of nutritional state of plants. In tropical edaphoclimatic conditions, the calcium (Ca) saturation in the cation exchange capacity (CEC) to obtain the highest productivity is lower than the values indicated as adequate for soils in temperate climates. Faba beans (Vicia faba L) are grown in northern Tunisia where annual rainfall approaches 1200 mm and where the soil acidity is the most limiting factor for plant growth. Aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) toxicities provide a hostile environment to root growth. To alleviate such a problem, farmers use selected acid-tolerant species. However, crop yields remain far below their optimal levels. Liming, a practice to eliminate acidity, has never been tried in this area before. This research aimed to evaluate the impact of lime and mineral fertilizers on root nodulation, plant uptake and yield of faba beans using a pot experiment. Treatments were combinations of two rates of calcium carbonate with three rates of superphosphate and three rates of potassium sulfate. Liming produced significantly higher number and weight of nodules on roots as well as higher nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents in plant tissue. Citrus cultures have a fundamental importance to the Brazilian economy; certain aspects such as plant nutrition, yield, and fruit quality are vital for the citrus industry sustainability. The present study evaluated the nutritional status of manganese in adult Pear orange trees using different lime rates topically applied to the soil. The direct evaluation of lime rates effects on leaf manganese (Mn) levels revealed a decrease of the nutrient correlated to its increased, as well as passage of time between application and measurement. Foliar sampling 30 months after surface lime application evidenced a high correlation of foliar manganese levels with soil base saturation of 10-20 cm. To investigate fine root dynamics after thinning (50% of standing tree) and liming calcium magnesium carbonate[CaMg(CO3)2] 2 Mg ha- 1, a 2-year study was performed in 40-year-old pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) and 44-year-old Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis Gord.) plantations in central Korea. Mean total fine root mass (kg ha- 1± SE) in the control, thinned, and limed plots were 1234 ± 32, 1346 ± 67, and 1134 ± 40 for the pitch pine plantation and 1655 ± 48, 1953 ± 58, and 1868 ± 70 for the Japanese larch plantation, respectively. Live fine root mass of pitch pine at 0-10 cm soil depth decreased after thinning and liming. In addition, liming significantly increased dead fine root mass of Japanese larch. Fine root production (kg ha- 1 yr- 1± SE) in the control, thinned and limed plots was 1108 ± 148, 2077 ± 262, and 1686 ± 103 for the pitch pine plantation and 1762 ± 103, 1886 ± 277, and 2176 ± 271 for the Japanese larch plantation, respectively. Fine root turnover rates increased after liming for both plantations. Fine root nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations of Japanese larch (1.012% of N and 0.073% of P) were higher than those of pitch pine (0.809% of N and 0.046% of P) in the control. Also N and P inputs into soil through fine root turnover increased after treatments. Results indicated that comparing fine root dynamics among forest types and after forest management practices might influence differences in soil fertility and underground nutrient cycling. The aim of the study was to examine response of mature phosphorus (P) deficient apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees to phosphorus fertilization and liming. The experiment was carried out during 2003-2005 in a commercial orchard in Central Poland on 'Jonagold' apple trees/M.26 planted in 1996 on a coarse-textured soil with low both pH (4.6) and organic matter (1.2%). Calcium-lactate soluble phosphorus concentration in the soil was within an optimal range despite appearance of leaf phosphorus deficiency symptoms. Soil and foliar applications of phosphorus, and soil liming were applied. Soil phosphorus fertilization was made in the first year of the experimental at a rate of 100 kg P per ha as triple superphosphate. Foliar sprays of a soluble compound containing organic phosphorus were performed 5 times per season at 2-week intervals, starting 4 weeks after full bloom. Soil liming was applied in the fall 2002 at a rate of 1100 kg Ca ha-1 as hydrated lime. Additional combination as soil phosphorus fertilization plus liming was also applied. Plots unsupplied with phosphorus and lime served as a control. The results showed that liming and liming plus soil P application increased soil pH, and phosphatase activity in the soil, and improved phosphorus nutrition, tree vigor, yield, fruit color, and firmness after storage; effect of these treatments was not found only in the first year of the study. In all years foliar phosphorus sprays improved phosphorus nutrition of apple trees, and fruit color and firmness after storage. In 2 out of 3 years foliar phosphorus application increased yield. The vegetative and reproductive responses of 'Jonagold' apple trees did not depend on soil phosphorus fertilization. It was concluded that maintaining an optimal pH of soils for apple trees limits the incidence of orchard phosphorus deficiency and that foliar phosphorus sprays should be applied in phosphorus-deficient apple orchards to improve yield, and fruit appearance and storability. A field study was conducted with the objective of determining response of dry bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to liming and copper (Cu) fertilization applied to an Oxisol. The lime rates used were 0, 12, and 24 Mg ha -1 and Cu rates were 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 40 kg Cu ha -1 . Liming significantly increased common bean grain yield. Liming also significantly influenced soil chemical properties in the top (0–10 cm) as well as in the sub (10–20 cm) soil layer in favor of higher bean yield. Application of Cu did not influence yield of bean significantly. Acidic nickel (Ni)-contaminated soils in the vicinity of a Ni refinery at Port Colborne (Ontario, Canada) cause Ni phytotoxicity and require remediation. Thus, a greenhouse test with 11 plant species with a wide range of susceptibility to Ni toxicity was conducted to determine if Ni phytotoxicity of all species could be ameliorated by a high rate of limestone. At the original pH of 5.2, the Welland soil (Typic Epiaquoll; 2900 mg kg-1 Ni) was severely phytotoxic to all plant species tested. Toxicity symptoms in dicots included interveinal chlorosis and necrosis of leaves. In grasses, a banded chlorosis was present. Two limestone rates, 2.5 and 50 Mgha-1, were included in the test. Both liming and plant species significantly affected soil pH, and 0.01 M Sr(NO3)2-extractable soil Ni. Increase in pH exponentially decreased Sr(NO3)2-extractable soil Ni. Grass species were more resistant to Ni toxicity than dicots. Liming soil to pH of 5.9-6.3 enabled good growth of several grass species, but dicot species were still stunted or died. Making the soil calcareous (pH 7.7-7.8) ameliorated Ni toxicity of this highly contaminated soil for all species tested. The experiment considered Vitis vinifera L. cv. “Pinot blanc” clone VCR5 grafted on a lime-susceptible (3309 C) and a lime-tolerant (41 B) hybrid rootstock and grown in 45 L pots of a calcareous and a non-calcareous soil. Each treatment included plants bearing clusters and plants without clusters; in the latter case the bunches were removed 15 days before blooming. During the third growth year, shoot length, leaf chlorophyll (Chl), and mineral element concentrations were recorded. At the end of the growing cycle the grapevines were divided into leaves, shoots, berries, cluster stems, trunk, roots, and dry matter and mineral element composition per organ were analyzed. The 41 B rootstock showed its lime-tolerance by exhibiting little reduction of shoot length when grown in the calcareous soil as compared to the non-calcareous one, while 3309 C growing in the calcareous soil induced a dramatic shoot length reduction. The rootstock also affected the leaf chl concentration according to the known degree of lime-tolerance/susceptibility: “Pinot blanc” grafted on 3309 C and growing on the calcareous soil showed chlorotic leaves while the plants grafted on 41 B had green leaves; cluster removal did not affect leaf chl. The fruit load (expressed as berry dry matter) was strongly affected by the soil and the rootstock; in the calcareous soil 41 B rootstock produced twice as high cluster dry matter than did 3309 C. A higher macronutrient uptake for the plants growing under lime-stress conditions was affected by 41 B rootstock. Cluster removal in plants grown on calcareous soil produced different effects, as follows: in the case of 41 B rootstock, a redistribution of photosynthate to other sinks like shoot tip and roots occurred, while in the case of 3309 C only the roots benefited. Ground dolomitic limestone (CaCO3/MgCO3) is used throughout the southeastern United States as a fertilizer amendment to soilless media. In addition to neutralizing media acidity, carbonate-based limestone also provides a source of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) for growth of many woody ornamental species, among these dwarf nandina. This study was conducted to compare the effects of CaO and CaO/MgO/CaCO3 blends to ground dolomitic limestone on the growth, marketable quality, and foliar nutrition of Nandina domestica ‘Nana Purpurea’ grown in soilless media. Materials were preplant incorporated based on the calcium carbonate equivalence (CCE, or acid-neutralizing equivalence) of ground dolomitic limestone (CCE=63) and plants were arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD). Growth indices (GI) were determined and plants harvested for tissue dry matter weights and foliar nutrient content. Plants amended with CaO, agricultural gypsum (CaSO4ċ2H2O), or pelletized dolomitic limestone, were of similar or better quality than plants amended with ground dolomitic limestone. Greatest nutrient uptake [nitrogen (N), Ca, potassium (K), and phosphorus (P)] was likewise observed for these treatments. All liming materials resulted in higher nutrient uptake compared to the unlimed control and highest foliar Mg was reported for plants amended with ground and pelletized dolomitic limestones. In year 1, plants were of similar quality, with the exception of the Ca(OH)2 treatment, which gave the lowest foliar quality ratings. In year 2, all plants were of marketable quality. Throughout the study, and especially during year 2, many foliar nutrient levels fell below established survey averages for dwarf nandina, illustrating the need to supplement media mixes with additional fertilizers during the growing season. For economical reasons, cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) may be grown as a double crop after tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). In this production system, plant nutrition may be limited for the second crop due to pH change or insufficient levels of calcium or magnesium. The objective of this 2-year field study was to compare the effects of selected liming materials on yield and grade distribution, and soil available nutrients of a tomato/cucumber double crop produced with plasticulture. Liming materials were compared to a control and a CaSO4 treatment based on the same neutralizing value as standard agricultural limestone. Supplemental N fertilization was provided by weekly injections at a rate of 7 kg/ha/week from ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) or calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2]. Each year, soil samples were collected at the beginning of the study and after each crop to determine nutrient availability. All liming materials raised soil pH in 1998 and 1999 over the unlimed control, though not to the target level for tomato and cucumber production (pH 6.5). Throughout the study, agricultural limestone, a high CaO-containing blend (calcitic blend) and a CaO/MgO (dolomitic blend), resulted in greater fruit weights compared to the control and CaSO4. These materials, along with quick lime (CaO), provided higher levels of soil Ca and Mg available for plant growth. However, it was found that current recommendations for potassium (K), regardless of liming source, were not adequate for optimal soil reserves and yields in this tomato/cucumber cropping system.
