Abstract

This study was conducted at El-Baramoon Research Station, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt during the growing seasons of 2015 and 2016 to study the effect of three water quantities (800.34, 1600.73 and 2400.40 m3/fed as common used treatment) and some antitranspirants, i.e., kaolin solutions 4%; as aluminum silicate, calcium carbonate (6%) as well as humic acid as potassium-humate (80% humic acid, 11-13% K2O) and their interactions on growth, yield, quality and some antioxidants of broccoli. The second level of water irrigation (1600.73 m3/fed) with application of kaolin or humic acid or the first level (2400.40 m3/fed) with application of kaolin or humic acid had the most significant effect of plant height, number of leaves/plant, dry weight/plant, leaves area/plant, central and lateral head weights/plot, total head yield/plot and total head yield/fed in both seasons of study, without significant differences between them. Increasing irrigation quantity from 800.34 to 2400.40 m3/fed increased broccoli growth characters in the both seasons. No significant differences were found in vegetative growth and yield attributes betwee water quantities of 1600.73 and 2400.40 m3/fed in both seasons. Kaolin or humic acid led to significant increase in most vegetative growth and yield traits compared to control. The third level of irrigation water quantity (800.34 m3/fed) with kaolin application had significant increases in antioxidants (vitamin C, anthocyanin, phenolic compounds and total flavonoids content). On the other hand, the application of high level of irrigation water quantity (2400.40 m3) and application of kaolin had a significant effect on protein content, in both seasons. The low level of irrigation water (800.34 m3) significantly increased the antioxidants content and decreased protein content in both seasons. Application of kaolin was significantly increased in all antioxidants and protein content in the both seasons in comparison with other treatments. Generally, it could be concluded that kaolin or humic acid application under water quantity of 1600.73 m3/fed was the best combination for broccoli production aimed at maximum water use efficiency in this study. This in turn encourages such amendments to reduce water consumption by 33.3%.

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted in Baramoon Research Station, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt during the growing summer seasons of 2014 and 2015 to determine the effect of some exogenous plant extracts to control mechanical injured, pest management, increasing productivity and storability of potato plants. Five locally available plants namely, neem, liquorice, turmeric, pomegranate and thyme were evaluated plus check treatment. Foliar spray with pomegranate peels or liquorice extracts (5%) led to significant increases in all vegetative growth parameters, total tuber and marketable yields and decreases in all physiological disorders and mechanical injures of potato plants. All the treatments were significantly reduced in population density of two spider mite, aphids and whitefly. The most effective treatments were turmeric, thyme and neem extracts for previous mentioned three insects, respectively, in terms of reduction percentage. Application of pomegranate or thyme extracts were significantly reduced percent of weight loss and decay, also excelled at increasing the content of dry matter and starch over the control and other treatments during storage at 4oC. The control treatment or neem extract had significant reduction the content of total phenols and the activity of polyphenol oxidase enzyme.This study recommends using foliar application with pomegranate peels or licorice extracts to increase the productivity, quality and marketable yield and neem or thyme extracts as pesticides and pomegranate peels or thyme extracts to increase storability and reduce weight losses, at intervals of 15 days beginning from the first of March until the end of April.

Abstract

Gemmeiza 12, a new bread wheat variety released by Wheat Research Department, Field Crops Research Institute, ARC, Egypt in 2012, offers wheat growers a new choice for high yielding, and rust resistant variety. Gemmeiza 12 originated and selected from a hybrid made at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). The parentages and pedigree of Gemmeiza 12 are : OTUS/3/SARA/THB//VEE CMSS97Y00227S-5y-010M-010Y-010M-2Y-1M-0Y-OGM .Based on the results of 76 yield trials conducted during three successive growing seasons 2007/2008 , 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 and 73 verification yield trials through the three growing seasons 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 in addition to 22 demonstration fields during 2012/2013 growing season. The results proved the superiority of the new cultivar Gemmeiza 12 over most of the dominating wheat cultivars i.e, Sakha 93, Gemmeiza 9, Giza 168 and Sids 12 at Delta region and Middle Egypt. Moreover, the new cultivar yielded more than Sakha 93 at all locations representing Upper Egypt and Out Valley zones but its productivity was slightly less than Giza 168 and Sids 12 in both locations. The results obtained from the on-farm trials and the demonstration field assure the superiority of Gemmeiza 12 The new released variety was resistant to rust diseases especially both yellow and stem rust diseases. The flour of Gemmeiza 12 is acceptable for bread making since the protein content reached about 13% and the wet gluten percentage was 29.1%

Abstract

The new promising bread wheat cultivar Shandaweel 1 has been selected from one of the advanced lines among the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center collections ( CIMMYT )grown in wheat research department, Field Crops Research Institute, ARC. Egyptat Shandaweel Research Station. The grain yield of the new cultivar Shandaweel 1 was evaluated through 99 experiments conducted at four different levels; ( 8 macro, 56 micro and 35 verification yield trials)in 2005/2006, 2006/2007, 2007/2008and 2011/2012,seasons, respectively. Results proved superiority of the new bread wheat cultivar Shandaweel 1 compared to the commercial checks cultivars Sakha 93, Sakha 94, Gemmeiza 9 and Giza 168 for grain yield at North, South and Middle Delta and Upper Egypt regions. Moreover, the results of the verification yield trials ensure the superiority of Shandaweel 1 cultivar on the commercial wheat cultivar Giza 168 at North, Middle, South Delta and Upper Egypt. Alsothe superiority of Shandaweel 1 cultivar on the commercial wheat cultivar Giza 168 and Gemmeiza 9 at North and South Delta and the OutValley region was observed and recorded. Thus, we can highly recommended the new cultivar Shandaweel 1to be grow at North Delta, South Delta,Middle Delta, Middle and Upper Egypt and the Out Valley regions.

Abstract

The newly bread wheat cultivar Gemmeiza 11 has been selected from a local cross made at Gemmeiza Agricultural Research Station, Wheat Research Dept. FCRI, ARC. Egypt, using the pedigree method. Yield evaluation was performed through 10 preliminary yield trials in 2005/ 2006, 65 advanced yield trials in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons, 66 verification yield trials in 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons in addition to 106 demonstration fields in 2011/ 2012 growing season. Results proved the superiority of the new bread wheat cultivar Gemmeiza11 compared to the commercial check cultivars Sakha 93, Sakha 94, Gemmeiza 9 and Shandaweel 1 in the most of different zones with a few exceptions . However, at the level of over all mean of the check cultivars across the locations at different climatic zones, the new cultivar mean yield exceeded significantly all the check cultivars means in both 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons. Thus, we can highly recommend the new cultivar Gemmeiza 11 to be grown all over zones of Egypt. Moreover, the results of the verification yield trials ensure the superiority of Gemmeiza11 on the commercial wheat cultivars Sakha 93, Giza 168 and Gemmeiza 9 at North, Middle and South Delta, but at Middle Egypt its yield was less than the check cultivars Sakha 93 and Giza 168 and it was nearly equal at Upper Egypt. The obtained results of the new cultivar in the demonstration fields achieved 28.38 ard /fed in four governorates in Middle and South Delta compared to the mean of the five check cultivars which yielded 24.162 ard / fed with an increment of 4.128 ard / fed (17.46%).

Abstract

The new promising durum wheat cultivar Bani Suef 6 was newly released from Wheat Research Department, Field Crops Research Institute, ARC, Egypt. Bani Suef6 has been selected from CIMMYT materials grown at Sids Agricultural Research Station. Yield evaluation was performed through 31 experiments conducted at different levels of preliminary and advanced yield trials during the three successive growing seasons from 2004/2005 to 2006/2007. The results revealed that the new durum wheat cultivar Bani Suef6 has high yielding ability compared with commercial durum wheat cultivars. Moreover, stability analysis for grain yield showed that Bani Suef 6 has better stability parameters in the three main regions for durum wheat cultivated in Egypt, i.e., Middle Egypt, Upper Egypt and Out Valley. Also, the results of rust diseases reactions cleared that Bani Suef 6 has high resistance to leaf and stem rust diseases. Studies on yield components of Bani Suef 6 revealed that the new cultivar had significantly surpassed the check durum cultivars in number of spikes/m2, number of kernels/spike and higher 1000-kernel weight confirming the contribution of yield components in improving grain yield of the new durum cultivar Bani Suef 6. Studies on number of days to heading revealed that Bani Suef 6 recorded 98.7 days to heading which was earlier than some durum cultivars and almost equal to the average of all cultivars (99.1 days). Similarity, Bani Suef 6 was the earliest in physiological maturity (147.7 days) while other durum checks ranged from 149.0 to 150.8 with an average of 149.7 days. Bani Suef 6 recorded the lowest plant height (101.0 cm vs. 106.0 cm for the average of other cultivars). Physical and chemical analyses of durum wheat grains showed that the new cultivar Bani Suef 6 had a higher score over the average of the other four durum cultivars in hectoliter (83.1 vs. 82), Semolina (77.0 vs. 76.6%), protein (12.9 vs. 12.3%), wet gluten (29.6 vs. 28.4%) and dry gluten (10.8 vs. 10.0%).

Abstract

The new bread wheat cultivar Sids 13 has been developed by Wheat Research Department, Field Crops Research Institute, Agriculture Research Center, Egypt and selected from one of the advanced lines among ICARDA collections grown in wheat breeding program at Sids Agricultural Research Station. The grain yield of the new cultivar Sids 13 was evaluated through 66 experiments at two different levels of yield trials (11 preliminary and 55 advanced yield trials) in the three successive seasons 2004/2005, 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, respectively. The obtained results proved the superiority of the new cultivar Sids 13 as compared to the local commercial cultivars, Giza 168, Sakha 93 and Gemmiza 9 in the main five regions of Egypt, i.e. North Delta, South Delta, Middle Egypt, Upper Egypt and Out Valley. Moreover, stability parameters for grain yield cleared that the newly bread wheat cultivar Sids 13 has better stability parameters in both South Delta and Upper Egypt regions and could be recommended for planting in those regions. Also, the results of rust diseases reactions proved that Sids 13 has high resistance to all tested pathotypes of the three rust diseases under local conditions.
