A theoretical broadband coupling-loss factor is developed analytically for use in the statistical energy analysis (SEA) of a shaft-bearing-plate system. The procedure is based on the solution of the boundary-value problem at the plate-bearing interface and incorporates a bearing-stiffness matrix developed by the authors. Three examples are utilized to illustrate the SEA incorporating the coupling-loss factor including: (1) a shaft-bearing-plate system; (2) a plate-cantilevered beam; and (3) a circular-shaft-bearing plate. The coupling-loss factor in the case of the thin plate-cantilevered beam is found to be more accurate than that developed by Lyon and Eichler (1964). The coupling-loss factor is described for the bearing system and extended to describe the mean-square vibratory response of a rectangular plate. The proposed techniques are of interest to the study of vibration and noise in rotating machinery such as gearboxes.

The bearing matrix formulations proposed by Lim and Singh (1990) are extended to analyze the overall dynamics of a geared rotor system which includes a spur gear pair, shafts, rolling-element bearings, a motor, a load, a casing, and flexible or rigid mounts. For this purpose, discrete vibration models are developed and used to predict vibration transmission through the bearings and to investigate the effects of the bearing, casing, and mount dynamics on the dynamic characteristics of the internal rotating system. Analytical predictions show that the theory is capable of predicting the bearing and mount moment transmissibilities in addition to the force transmissibilities. The predicted flexural vibrations of the casing plate are in good agreement with measurements conducted on an experimental set-up that consisted of a high-precision beam and pinion, and four identical rolling element bearings contained in a flexible casing mounted rigidly on a massive foundation.

The paper proposes a reduced-order analytical model of a spur gear pair which consists of two identical spur gears, two identical flexible shafts, and four identical rolling element bearings of a given radial stiffness. The error associated with the undamped eigensolution is estimated by a comparison with a benchmark finite element model.

The nonlinear frequency response characteristics of a geared rotor-bearing system are examined. A three-DOF dynamic model is developed which includes nonlinearities associated with radial clearances in the radial rolling element bearings and backlash between a spur gear pair; linear time-invariant gear meshing stiffness is assumed. The corresponding linear system problem is also solved, and predicted natural frequencies and modes match with finite element method results. The applicability of both analytical and numerical solution techniques to the multi-DOF nonlinear problem is investigated. Satisfactory agreement is found between the theory presented here and the available experimental data. Nonlinear modal interactions and differences between internal static transmission error excitation and external torque excitation are discussed. In addition, parametric studies are performed to understand the effect of system parameters such as bearing stiffness to gear mesh stiffness ratio, alternating to mean force ratio and radial bearing preload to mean force ratio on the nonlinear dynamic behavior.

The backlash nonlinearity excited primarily by transmission error between spur gear pairs is studied for both external and internal excitations. The digital simulation technique and the method of harmonic balance are used to develop steady state solutions for the internal sinuosidal excitations. The analytic predictions agreed well with available experimental data. Digital simulation is used to observe that at the chaotic and subharmonic resonances may exist in a gear pair depending on the mean or design load, mean to alternating force ratio, damping, and backlash.

How vibratory motion can be transmitted from the rotating shaft to the casing and other connecting structures in rotating mechanical equipment is addressed here by developing a new mathematical model of precision rolling element bearings. A new grating stiffness matrix is proposed in order to demonstrate a coupling between the shaft bending motion and the flexural motion of the casing plate. It is shown that the translational bearing stiffness coefficients currently used in rotor dynamic models are a small subset of the proposed matrix. The theory is validated by examples, and the proposed bearing formulation is then extended to demonstrate its superiority over existing models in vibration transmission analyses. It is shown that the model can easily be incorporated into analytical or numerical models typically used for dynamic analyses.
