This paper describes the carbonate–siliciclastic system of the equatorial continental shelf of NE Brazil (East Ceará) based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), grain size, CaCO 3 , shallow seismic and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) analyses. Data were obtained for two sectors: 1) Halimeda Bank (HB), inner shelf (−12 m), and 2) transverse profile (TP), inner to outer shelf-upper slope (−5 to −100 m). In total, 72 samples were collected, and 29 km of seismic lines (HB) and ROV profiles (HB and TP) were surveyed. The main chemical elements were Ca and Si (93%). These elements occur in two types of shallow marine sediments: carbonate (mainly autochthonous) and siliciclastics (terrigenous/allochthonous/relict). With respect to the chemical elements, a strong negative correlation was observed between calcareous (Ca and Sr) and siliciclastic (Si, Al, and K) components. Strontium does not always show a strong positive correlation with Ca. The average CaCO 3 contents of 81% and 91% were determined for the HB and TP, respectively. The profiles show a predominance of carbonate sediments; however, the HB demonstrates a greater continental influence (inner shelf). The grain size presents a prevalence of sand (82%) in relation to gravel (18%). This particle size variation is mainly due to the breakdown of Halimeda nodules, siliciclastic sediments in the finer fraction (>2.5Φ), and the presence of gravel with iron coating (relict). Two types of echo-characters have been identified. Both are associated with the large presence of carbonate sediments. Echo I shows the bottom surface with continuity in the sub-bottom without a subsurface reflector. Echo II presents a discontinuous subsurface reflector. The ROV allowed the observation of algae patches in higher floors and gravelly and sandy bioclastics in the lowest sectors. Large patches of calcareous green algae, Halimeda , occur in the inner shelf below the 15 m isobath, mainly due to the semi-arid climate (weak sediment supply from the mainland), geographical position (equatorial) and oceanographic conditions (hydrodynamic and biogeochemistry). It has been concluded that the seafloor of the semi-arid continental shelf of East Ceará (NE Brazil) shows modern predominance of carbonate deposition based on the lack of contaminants, geochemical purity of carbonate sediments, and high percentage of CaCO 3. The conditions for exploitation in the intermediate sector are provided. However, it would be ideal to perform punctual extraction and analyze the resilience and regeneration of Halimeda incrassata and the consequences for fisheries (important economic resource of the region). The Araucaria Plateau is a geomorphological unit that occupies approximately three-quarters of the terrain in the southern region of Brazil. The plateau displays different altitudinal levels (600 to <1400 m a.s.l.) that are locally recognized as remnants of planed surfaces (S8-S1). These surfaces are maintained by basic (S3-S8) and acidic (S1 and S2) volcanic flows from the Neocretaceous period of the Paraná Basin. The largest extent of this plateau is located in a humid subtropical climate zone. Colluvial, colluvial-alluvial, alluvial sediments and paleosols (Ab diagnostic horizons) occur predominantly in S2. The paleosols are located in low-hierarchical-order fossil valleys (first- to fourth-order in Strahler's stream classification) and valley heads, which are referred to as paleovalleys in this paper. We employed these paleosols as stratigraphic level markers of the pedogenesis of the regional Upper Quaternary and propose their importance as records of the paleoenvironmental conditions of the Araucaria Plateau in areas above 1200 m a.s.l. These paleosols were dated by 14C and show ages between 23.8 ± 0.05 kyr BP (28.06-29.08 kyr cal. BP) and 41.16 ± 0.48 kyr BP (44.13-45.58 kyr cal. BP). The calibrated ages are related to Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3), in which the last period of global warming occurred (approximately 60-25 kyr cal. BP). We integrated the morphological, pedogeochemical, clay fraction mineralogy, micromorphological and δC-13 analyses of five paleosols from S2 to verify the paleoenvironmental conditions of the Araucaria Plateau and its correspondence with the paleoclimatic phenomena that were identified on a global scale during MIS 3 in the Southern Hemisphere. We obtained the following conclusions: a) the properties of paleosols reflect pedological processes that are adjusted to the paleoenvironmental conditions at the end of MIS 3 and the transition to MIS 2 (Last Glacial Maximum); b) aplasmogenic partial acidolysis was the predominant pedogeochemical process during MIS 3; c) during this period, the water regime was sufficiently humid to develop hydromorphic horizons in the valley bottoms of the entire drainage network to the valley heads; d) regional change toward a drier hydric regime occurred in MIS 2, when erosion of the paleosols predominated; and e) in MIS 1 (current Holocene interglacial), burial of the paleosols and relief inversion occurred, which resulted in fossilization of the valleys. In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of the shelf mud depocenters off South Brazil, between latitudes 27°30′S and 24°30′S. A combination of geochronological, textural (grain-size), and geochemical (metals and εNd values) analyses allowed to recognize different mud deposits in the area. It was possible to recognize changes in the sedimentation rates along with each sediment core, despite a relative homogeneity in the nature of the terrigenous sediments. The Río de La Plata discharge was confirmed as the primary source of sediments to the shelf in the area of study. Also, it is possible to recognize a limited local contribution from the adjacent land to the coastal depocenters. Finally, we identify a distinct source of the sediments deposited in the north of the study area, probably as a function of the transport by the Brazil Current. Our findings attest to the complexity of the origin of sediments to the southern Brazilian shelf as well as to the need for more detailed works in source-to-sink on the southern Brazilian shelf, which is a potential fate for anthropogenic compounds. • Sedimentation in the Southern Brazilian mudbelts present a diversity of sources. • The source of sediments did not change along the last ca. 200 years. • The Río de La Plata was confirmed as a main source of the sediments of the southern Brazilian shelf.
