This paper derives, in the exact framework of multiple scattering theory for point targets, a noniterative analytical formula for the nonlinear inversion of the target scattering strengths from the scattering or response matrix that can be applied after the target positions have been estimated in a previous step via, e.g., time-reversal multiple signal classification or another approach. The new formula provides a noniterative analytical alternative to the iterative numerical solution approach for the same problem presented in a recent paper [A. J. Devaney, E. A. Marengo, and F. K. Gruber, “Time-reversal-based imaging and inverse scattering of multiply scattering point targets,” J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 118, 3129–3138 (2005)]. The acoustic diffusion equation model has shown to be a versatile alternative model for certain types of scenarios where the classical geometrical methods have been demonstrated to be inefficient or even inaccurate. In certain scenarios, the transmission loss plays a fundamental role for accounting, i.e., noise levels and sound propagation between rooms. This paper presents an extension of the absorption boundary conditions known as modified that unifies previously proposed boundary conditions in one equation, including transmission of energy between coupled rooms by both openings and enclosures. A generalized superposition method is presented in this paper for free bending vibration analysis of single rectangular plates and assemblies of rectangular plates with arbitrary boundary conditions. The method was developed on the basis of the Levy method, the principle of superposition, and the uniform convergence of half-range Fourier cosine series for continuous functions in a closed interval. Numerical results, obtained using the proposed method for thin isotropic plates and plate assemblies, show that the proposed method is accurate and rapidly convergent. This paper focuses on the development of absorbing boundary conditions and their implementation in the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method for wave propagation problems. A compact perfectly matched layer (C-PML) approach is formulated for transient acoustic problems in an infinite space using SPH models with a computational domain of finite dimensions. The proposed approach is based on the concept of fictitious physical damping acting within the additional perfectly matched layers (PMLs) to absorb outgoing waves to practically eliminate the reflection of waves from the boundary of the finite computational domain. To reduce the amount of computations resulting from the layers and improve the computational stability with respect to time, the C-PML algorithm uses the time exponential differencing scheme with small PML domains implemented in an SPH code for transient analyses of waves propagating in acoustic media. Tests of Gaussian pulse sound wave propagation are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the C-PML algorithm with SPH can absorb the outgoing wave with fewer layers than the conventional PML algorithm. This paper proposes a different method for calculating a sound field diffracted by a rigid barrier based on the integral equation method, where a virtual boundary is assumed above the rigid barrier to divide the whole space into two subspaces. Based on the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz equation, the sound field in each subspace is determined with the source inside and the boundary conditions on the surface, and then the diffracted sound field is obtained by using the continuation conditions on the virtual boundary. Simulations are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Guided waves are used for the non-destructive evaluation in automotive and aerospace industries. There is a trend leaning away from isotropic materials to the manufacturing based on composites. However, the elastic wave dynamics in such materials is considerably more complicated. Much effort has been committed to the calculation of guided waves' dispersion curves in composites. Lots of methods and tools are available, but it becomes difficult when there are more than one hundred layers. In this paper the calculation of dispersion diagrams and mode shapes using the stiffness matrix method is demonstrated. Boundary conditions are implemented into the stiffness matrix method that allow for the separate tracing of the various mode families. Shear horizontal modes are modeled with the transfer matrix method without facing any numerical instability. It is elucidated just how the occurrence of the mode families depends on the system's symmetry and wave propagation direction. As a result, the robustness and reliability of guided wave modeling by using the stiffness method is improved, and more information about the modes is yielded. This is demonstrated on exemplary layups of the fiber reinforced polymer T800/913, with up to 400 layers. In this paper a derivation of the attenuation factor in a waveguide with stochastic walls is presented. The perturbation method and Fourier analysis are employed to derive asymptotically consistent boundary-value problems at each asymptotic order. The derived approximation predicts the attenuation of the propagating mode in a rough waveguide through a correction to the eigenvalue corresponding to smooth walls. The proposed approach can be used to derive results that are consistent with those obtained by Bass et al. [IEEE Trans. Antennas Propag. 22, 278-288 (1974)]. The novelty of the method is that it does not involve the integral Dyson-type equation and, as a result, the large number of statistical moments included in the equation in the form of the mass operator of the volume scattering theory. The derived eigenvalue correction is described by the correlation function of the randomly rough surface. The averaged solution in the plane wave regime is approximated by the exponential function dependent on the derived eigenvalue correction. The approximations are compared with numerical results obtained using the finite element method (FEM). An approach to retrieve the correct deviation in roughness height and correlation length from multiple numerical realizations of the stochastic surface is proposed to account for the oversampling of the rough surface occurring in the FEM meshing procedure. Piezoelectric bar transducers are commonly used for generating low frequency flexural mode vibrations. The paper calculates the electromechanical properties including the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of the stripe-electroded tangentially polarized bar transducer vibrating in flexure under the simply supported boundary condition. A numerical analysis is used to model the curved electric field lines. Calculations take into account the internal energies due to the contributions of the transverse and longitudinal piezoelectric effects and the modal strain distribution in the bar. Results are presented as functions of distance between the electrodes and thickness of elements and are compared with traditional bimorph designs employing either transverse or longitudinal polarization. Regularization of the inverse problem is a complex issue when using near-field acoustic holography (NAH) techniques to identify the vibrating sources. This paper shows that, for convex homogeneous plates with arbitrary boundary conditions, alternative regularization schemes can be developed based on the sparsity of the normal velocity of the plate in a well-designed basis, i.e., the possibility to approximate it as a weighted sum of few elementary basis functions. In particular, these techniques can handle discontinuities of the velocity field at the boundaries, which can be problematic with standard techniques. This comes at the cost of a higher computational complexity to solve the associated optimization problem, though it remains easily tractable with out-of-the-box software. Furthermore, this sparsity framework allows us to take advantage of the concept of compressive sampling; under some conditions on the sampling process (here, the design of a random array, which can be numerically and experimentally validated), it is possible to reconstruct the sparse signals with significantly less measurements (i.e., microphones) than classically required. After introducing the different concepts, this paper presents numerical and experimental results of NAH with two plate geometries, and compares the advantages and limitations of these sparsity-based techniques over standard Tikhonov regularization. This paper deals with experimental investigation of the lined wall boundary condition in flow duct applications such as aircraft engine systems or automobile mufflers. A first experiment, based on a microphone array located in the liner test section, is carried out in order to extract the axial wavenumbers with the help of an 'high-accurate' singular value decomposition Prony-like algorithm. The experimental axial wavenumbers are then used to provide the lined wall impedance for both downstream and upstream acoustic propagation by means of a straightforward impedance education method involving the classical Ingard-Myers boundary condition. The results show that the Ingard-Myers boundary condition fails to predict with accuracy the acoustic behavior in a lined duct with flow. An effective lined wall impedance, valid whatever the direction of acoustic propagation, can be suitably found from experimental axial wavenumbers and a modified version of the Ingard-Myers condition with the form inspired from a previous theoretical study [Aurégan et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 109, 59-64 (2001)]. In a second experiment, the scattering matrix of the liner test section is measured and is then compared to the predicted scattering matrix using the multimodal approach and the lined wall impedances previously deduced. A large discrepancy is observed between the measured and the predicted scattering coefficients that confirms the poor accuracy provided from the Ingard-Myers boundary condition widely used in lined duct applications. Development of local volume displacement sensors is presented. This development supports the implementation of noise control techniques that are based on minimization of local volume displacements, velocities, or accelerations of a vibrating structure. In this paper, a general methodology for the development of local volume displacement sensors for vibrating plates using p̠olyv̠yniliḏene f̠luoride (PVDF) is presented. This methodology was verified experimentally for a clamped plate. The local volume displacement measured using a PVDF sensor matched the local volume displacement found using multiple accelerometer measurements. The resulting sensor spans the entire x-length of the plate and covers the width of the area of interest. The sensor is composed of several strips of PVDF whose width varies with x quadratically on the local area and linearly elsewhere. Design issues for a clamped plate, a simply supported plate and a plate with arbitrary boundary conditions are discussed along with a presentation of some sample sensor shapes. This paper presents a Fourier spectral element method (FSEM) to analyze the free vibration of conical-cylindrical-spherical shells with arbitrary boundary conditions. Cylindrical-conical and cylindrical-spherical shells as special cases are also considered. In this method, each fundamental shell component (i.e., cylindrical, conical, and spherical shells) is divided into appropriate elements. The variational principle in conjunction with first-order shear deformation shell theory is employed to model the shell elements. Since the displacement and rotation components of each element are expressed as a linear superposition of nodeless Fourier sine functions and nodal Lagrangian polynomials, the global equations of the coupled shell structure can be obtained by adopting the assembly procedure. The Fourier sine series in the displacement field is introduced to enhance the accuracy and convergence of the solution. Numerical results show that the FSEM can be effectively applied to vibration analysis of the coupled shell structures. Numerous results for coupled shell structures with general boundary conditions are presented. The classic analytical model for the sound absorption of micro perforated materials is well developed and is based on a boundary condition where the velocity of the material is assumed to be zero, which is accurate when the material vibration is negligible. This paper develops an analytical model for finite-sized circular micro perforated membranes (MPMs) by applying a boundary condition such that the velocity of air particles on the hole wall boundary is equal to the membrane vibration velocity (a zero-slip condition). The acoustic impedance of the perforation, which varies with its position, is investigated. A prediction method for the overall impedance of the holes and the combined impedance of the MPM is also provided. A model, combining acoustical radiosity and the image source method, including phase shifts on reflection, has been developed. The model is denoted Phased Acoustical Radiosity and Image Source Method (PARISM), and it has been developed in order to be able to model both specular and diffuse reflections with complex-valued and angle-dependent boundary conditions. This paper mainly describes the combination of the two models and the implementation of the angle-dependent boundary conditions. It furthermore describes how a pressure impulse response is obtained from the energy-based acoustical radiosity by regarding the model as being stochastic. Three methods of implementation are proposed and investigated, and finally, recommendations are made for their use. Validation of the image source method is done by comparison with finite element simulations of a rectangular room with a porous absorber ceiling. Results from the full model are compared with results from other simulation tools and with measurements. The comparisons of the full model are done for real-valued and angle-independent surface properties. The proposed model agrees well with both the measured results and the alternative theories, and furthermore shows a more realistic spatial variation than energy-based methods due to the fact that interference is considered. Sound transmission through a single leaf panel has mostly been discussed and explained by using the approaching wave concept, from which the well-known mass law can be derived. In this paper, the modal behavior in sound transmission coefficients is explored, and it is shown that the mutual modal radiation impedances in modal sound transmission coefficients may not be ignored even for a panel immersed in a light fluid. By introducing the equivalent modal impedance which incorporates the inter-modal coupling effect, an analytical expression for the modal sound transmission coefficient is derived, and the overall sound transmission coefficient is simply a modal superposition of modal sound transmission coefficients. A good correlation is obtained between analytical calculation and boundary element method. In addition, it is found that inter-modal coupling has noticeable effects in modal sound transmission coefficients in the subsonic region but may be ignored as modes become supersonic. Underwater vehicles are often equipped with anechoic coatings to absorb the sound waves of active sonar and attenuate the noise emitted from the vessels. Rubber layers with periodically distributed air cavities are widely used as anechoic coatings. In this paper, the sound absorption of anechoic coatings embedded with doubly periodic cavities and backed with periodically rib-stiffened plates is investigated using a finite element method (FEM) with Bloch-periodic boundary conditions. Numerical results given by the FEM are compared with those of a simplified transfer impedance approach to explain the shifting of the main absorption peak. Further a simplified FEM approach, which reduces calculation time significantly and maintains the reasonable accuracy, is proposed for a comparison. The results indicate that the plate and the ribs can have significant impacts on the absorption performance of anechoic coatings, especially at low frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper a numerical approach is presented to compute dispersion curves for solid waveguides coupled to an infinite medium. The derivation is based on the scaled boundary finite element method that has been developed previously for waveguides with stress-free surfaces. The effect of the surrounding medium is accounted for by introducing a dashpot boundary condition at the interface between the waveguide and the adjoining medium. The damping coefficients are derived from the acoustic impedances of the surrounding medium. Results are validated using an improved implementation of an absorbing region. Since no discretization of the surrounding medium is required for the dashpot approach, the required number of degrees of freedom is typically 10 to 50 times smaller compared to the absorbing region. When compared to other finite element based results presented in the literature, the number of degrees of freedom can be reduced by as much as a factor of 4000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a study of the vibration and acoustic response characteristics of orthotropic laminated composite plate with simple supported boundary conditions excited by a harmonic concentrated force in a hygroscopic environment. First the natural vibration of the plate with the in-plane forces induced by hygroscopic stress is obtained analytically. Secondly, the sound pressure distribution of the plate at the far field is obtained using the Rayleigh integral. Furthermore, the sound radiation efficiency is deduced. Third, different ratios of elastic modulus in material principal directions are set to research the effects of increasing stiffness of the orthotropic plate on the vibration and acoustic radiation characteristics. Finally, to verify the theoretical solution, numerical simulations are also carried out with commercial finite software. It is found that the natural frequencies decrease with the increase of the moisture content and the first two order modes interconvert at high moisture content. The dynamic response and sound pressure level float to lower frequencies with elevated moisture content. Acoustic radiation efficiency generally floats to the low frequencies and decreases with an increase of moisture content. The present paper examines the temporal evolution of acoustic fields by modeling forward propagation subject to sea surface dynamics with time scales of less than a second to tens of seconds. A time-evolving rough sea surface model is combined with a rough surface formulation of a parabolic equation model for predicting time-varying acoustic fields. Surface waves are generated from surface wave spectra, and stepped in time using a Runge-Kutta integration technique applied to linear evolution equations. This evolving, range-dependent surface information is combined with other environmental parameters and input to the acoustic model, giving an approximation of the time-varying acoustic field. The wide-angle parabolic equation model manages the rough sea surfaces by molding them into the boundary conditions for calculations of the near-surface acoustic field. This merged acoustic model is validated using concurrently-collected acoustic and environmental information, including surface wave spectra. Data to model comparisons demonstrate that the model is able to approximate the ensemble-averaged acoustic intensity at ranges of about a kilometer for acoustic signals of around 15 kHz. This paper presents theoretical and experimental results on the influence of panel vibrations on the sound absorption properties of thin micro-perforated panel absorbers (MPPA). Measurements show that the absorption performance of thin MPPAs generates extra absorption peaks or dips that cannot be understood assuming a rigid MPPA. A theoretical model is established that accounts for structural-acoustic interaction between the micro-perforated panel and the backing cavity, assuming uniform conservative boundary conditions for the panel and separable coordinates for the cavity cross-section. This model is verified experimentally against impedance tube measurements and laser vibrometric scans of the cavity-backed panel response. It is shown analytically and experimentally that the air-frame relative velocity is a key factor that alters the input acoustic impedance of thin MPPAs. Coupled mode analysis reveals that the two first resonances of an elastic MPPA are either panel-cavity, hole-cavity, or panel-controlled resonances, depending on whether the effective air mass of the perforations is greater or lower than the first panel modal mass. A critical value of the perforation ratio is found through which the MPPA resonances experience a frequency 'jump' and that determines two absorption mechanisms operating out of the transitional region. A coupled system consisting of an acoustic cavity and an elastic panel is a classical problem in structural acoustics and is typically analyzed using modal approaches based on in vacuo structural modes and the rigidly walled acoustic modes which are pre-determined based on separate component models. Such modeling techniques, however, tend to suffer the following drawbacks or limitations: (a) a panel is only subjected to ideal boundary conditions such as the simply supported, (b) the coupling between the cavity and panel is considered weak, and (c) the particle velocity cannot be correctly predicted from the pressure gradient on the contacting interface, to name a few. Motivated by removing these restrictions, this paper presents a general method for the vibro-acoustic analysis of a three-dimensional (3D) acoustic cavity bounded by a flexible panel with general elastically restrained boundary conditions. The displacement of the plate and the sound pressure in the cavity are constructed in the forms of standard two-dimensional and 3D Fourier cosine series supplemented by several terms introduced to ensure and accelerate the convergence of the series expansions. The unknown expansions coefficients are treated as the generalized coordinates and determined using the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on the energy expressions for the coupled structural acoustic system. This paper describes a mathematical model for the scattering of acoustic waves in dispersions of prolate or oblate non-spherical particles. Based on fundamental equations of change for mass, momentum, and energy, wave equations are derived and solved in spheroidal coordinates. The examination of the boundary-value problem of an aligned spheroidal particle in a continuous medium, excited by a plane wave, leads to a description of the viscoinertial, thermal, and diffractive phenomena. The model is analogous to the Epstein–Carhart–Allegra–Hawley theory for spherical particles, and suggests itself for studying non-sphericity in the acoustic analysis of industrial dispersions. In this paper, two sets of experimental results to extract the two effective elastic moduli, the effective shear modulus, and the effective Poisson’s ratio for the gerbil cochlear partition are analyzed. In order to accomplish this, a geometrically nonlinear composite orthotropic plate model is employed. The model is used to predict both out-of-plane and in-plane motion of the partition under a static finite area distributed load. This loading condition models the small, but finite size, probe tips used in experiments. Both in-plane and out-of-plane motion are needed for comparison with recent experimental results. It is shown that the spatial decay rate (the space constant) for the in-plane deflection is different than for the out-of-plane deflection, which has a significant effect on the derived partition properties. The size of the probe tip is shown to have little influence on the results. Results are presented for two types of boundary conditions. Orthotropy ratios determined from the experimental data are found to vary with longitudinal position and choice of boundary conditions. The aim of this paper is to investigate the acoustic performance of sound absorbing materials through a numerical wave based prediction technique. The final goal of this work is to get insight into the acoustic behavior of a combination of sound absorbing patches. In order to address a wide frequency range, a model based on the Trefftz approach is adopted. In this approach, the dynamic field variables are expressed in terms of global wave function expansions that satisfy the governing dynamic equations exactly. Therefore, approximation errors are associated only with the boundary conditions of the considered problem. This results in a computationally efficient technique. The main advantage of this method is the fact that the sound absorbing patches do not have to be locally reacting. In this article, the wave based method is described and experimentally validated for the case of normal incidence sound absorption identification in a standing wave tube. This paper proposes a modified boundary condition to improve the room-acoustic prediction accuracy of a diffusion equation model. Previous boundary conditions for the diffusion equation model have certain limitations which restrict its application to a certain number of room types. The boundary condition employing the Sabine absorption coefficient [V. Valeau et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 119, 1504–1513 (2006)] cannot predict the sound field well when the absorption coefficient is high, while the boundary condition employing the Eyring absorption coefficient [Y. Jing and N. Xiang, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 3284–3287 (2007); A. Billon et al., Appl. Acoust. 69, (2008)] has a singularity whenever any surface material has an absorption coefficient of 1.0. The modified boundary condition is derived based on an analogy between sound propagation and light propagation. Simulated and experimental data are compared to verify the modified boundary condition in terms of room-acoustic parameter prediction. The results of this comparison suggest that the modified boundary condition is valid for a range of absorption coefficient values and successfully eliminates the singularity problem. Previous analytical and empirical studies of the human auditory system have shown that the cues used for localization are modified by the inclusion of nonrigid scattering surfaces (clothing, hair etc). This paper presents an investigation into the acoustic impedance properties of human hair. The legitimacy of a locally reactive surface assumption is investigated, and an appropriate boundary condition is formulated to account for the physiological composition of a human head with hair. This utilizes an equivalent impedance parameter to allow the scattering boundary to be defined at a reference plane coincident with the inner rigid surface of the head. Experimental examination of a representative synthetic hair material at oblique incidence is used to show that a locally reactive surface assumption is legitimate. Additional experimental analysis of a simple scattering problem illustrates that the equivalent impedance must be used in favor of the traditional surface impedance to yield physically correct pressure magnitudes. The equivalent acoustic impedance properties of a representative range of human hair samples are discussed, including trends with sample thickness, fiber diameter, bulk density, and mass. This paper introduces a method for determining the transmission coefficient for finite coupled plates using an analytical waveguide model combined with a scattering matrix. In the scattering matrix method, the amplitudes of the structural waves impinging on a junction are separated into incident, reflected, and transmitted components. The energy flow due to each of these waves is obtained using a wave impedance method, which is subsequently used to determine the transmission coefficient. Transmission coefficients for semi-infinite and finite L-shaped plates are investigated for single and multiple point force excitations, and for controlled incident wave sources. It is shown that the transmission coefficients can also be calculated from details of the modal transmission coefficients and the modal composition of the energy incident on the junction. Results show that the modal transmission coefficients are largely independent of whether the plates have finite or semi-infinite boundary conditions, and are only dependent on the details of the coupling. Finally, frequency averaged transmission coefficients are compared for semi-infinite and finite structures. In the cases considered, it is found that the semi-infinite system is a good approximation for finite systems after frequency averaging, especially if the system is excited with multiple point force excitation. Formulation and implementation of time-domain boundary conditions (TDBCs) at the surface of a reactive porous material are made challenging by the slow decay, complexity, or noncausal nature of many commonly used models of porous materials. In this paper, approaches are described that improve computational efficiency and enforce causality. One approach involves approximating the known TDBC for the modified Zwikker-Kosten impedance model as a summation of decaying exponential functions. A second approach, which can be applied to any impedance model, involves replacing the characteristic admittance with its Padé approximation. Biomedical applications of photoacoustics, in particular photoacoustic tomography, require efficient models of photoacoustic propagation that can incorporate realistic properties of soft tissue, such as acoustic inhomogeneities both for purposes of simulation and for use in model-based image reconstruction methods. k-space methods are well suited to modeling high-frequency acoustics applications as they require fewer mesh points per wavelength than conventional finite element and finite difference models, and larger time steps can be taken without a loss of stability or accuracy. They are also straighforward to encode numerically, making them appealing as a general tool. The rationale behind k-space methods and the k-space approach to the numerical modeling of photoacoustic waves in fluids are covered in this paper. Three existing k-space models are applied to photoacoustics and demonstrated with examples: an exact model for homogeneous media, a second-order model that can take into account heterogeneous media, and a first-order model that can incorporate absorbing boundary conditions. Elastic waves excited by a plane piezoelectric source with an arbitrary shape on the surface of a multilayered medium have been studied for the first time in this paper. On the basis of Abzo-zena [Geophys. J. R. Astron. Soc. 58, 91–105 (1979)] and Menke [Geophys. J. R. Astron. Soc. 59, 315–323 (1979)], the propagator matrix for the elastic wave field in multilayered medium is extended from two- to three-dimensional (3D) space. 3D elastic wave field is investigated and the displacement-stress response for the boundary conditions is obtained. The propagation of elastic wave in multilayered media is analyzed in 3D space in the frequency domain. The P-SV and SH modes corresponding to the poles are studied. The excitation and propagation of the modes are analyzed further. It is found that the propagation velocities of the P-SV and SH modes do not depend on the propagation azimuth θ in the plane parallel to the free surface of the multilayered medium while the displacement amplitudes are strongly dependent on the azimuth θ. The directional distribution functions of the modes are independent of the medium parameters and the modes and dependent on the shape and excitation fashion of the source. Finally, as an example, the displacement fields of the P-SV and SH modes excited by a rectangle source are analyzed. This paper provides numerical implementation and tests for a boundary integral equation method proposed recently by Krutitskii [IMA J. Appl. Math. 64, 259-269 (2000)] for evaluating three-dimensional acoustic radiation and scattering fields in the exterior Neumann problem for several obstacles. Auxiliary boundaries with certain prescribed boundary conditions are introduced inside the obstacles for the purpose of eliminating the fictitious characteristic frequencies. Applying the simple source formulation on all boundaries leads to a set of uniquely solvable integral equations with weakly singular kernels. To facilitate the numerical implementation, the modified integral equations are further transformed to ordinary ones that contain nonsingular kernels only. Test cases consist of the acoustic radiation and scattering by one sphere and a pair of equal spheres. Comparisons are made with analytical solutions and Schenck's CHIEF method. This paper addresses the efficient solution of acoustic problems in which the primary interest is obtaining the solution only on restricted portions of the domain but over a wide range of frequencies. The exterior acoustics boundary value problem is approximated using the finite element method in combination with the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map. The restriction domain problem is formally posed in transfer function form based on the finite element solution. In order to obtain the solution over a range of frequencies, a matrix-valued Padé approximation of the transfer function is employed, using a two-sided block Lanczos algorithm. This approach provides a stable and efficient representation of the Padé approximation. In order to apply the algorithm, it is necessary to reformulate the transfer function due to the frequency dependency in the nonreflecting boundary condition. This is illustrated for the case of the DtN boundary condition, but there is no restriction on the approach which can also be applied to other radiation boundary conditions. A methodology to design broadband time-domain impedance boundary conditions (TDIBCs) from the analysis of acoustical models is presented. The derived TDIBCs are recast exclusively as first-order differential equations, well-suited for high-order numerical simulations. Broadband approximations are yielded from an elementary linear least squares optimization that is, for most models, independent of the absorbing material geometry. This methodology relies on a mathematical technique referred to as the oscillatory-diffusive (or poles and cuts) representation, and is applied to a wide range of acoustical models, drawn from duct acoustics and outdoor sound propagation, which covers perforates, semi-infinite ground layers, as well as cavities filled with a porous medium. It is shown that each of these impedance models leads to a different TDIBC. Comparison with existing numerical models, such as multi-pole or extended Helmholtz resonator, provides insights into their suitability. The resonance frequencies and effective coupling coefficients of piezoceramic rectangular plates polarized through their width and transversely polarized bars are presented as functions of their lateral aspect ratios. The results are obtained by employing the coupled vibration analysis technique that was previously illustrated for rectangular plates polarized through the thickness [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 126(6), 2983-2990 (2009)]. The results of calculations show good agreement with experimental data. The acoustic pressure and radiation force acting on the spherical rigid particle located in a fluid-filled cylindrical vessel are determined as a function of the primary wave frequency making use of the solution of a problem of plane harmonic wave scattering on a spherical body. The problem is solved by the variables separation method. To satisfy the boundary conditions on cylindrical and spherical surfaces, the mutual expansions of spherical wave functions over the cylindrical ones and vice versa are used. Required constants in the solution are calculated from an infinite system of algebraic equations which is solved by a truncation method. It is established that the value of the radiation force is affected significantly by the presence of the cylindrical boundary surface. Depending on the frequency of the incident wave, the radiation force can change its direction. It is established that there are peak values of the force at some discrete values of the frequency. The mentioned peculiarities can stipulate specific localization effects and influence the motion of the particles in the cylindrical cavity under the influence of an acoustic wave. In the paper we give a method for calculating the tractions (local forces) of the fluid motion determined by an incoming plane pressure wave on an artificial hair cell transducer structure. The sensing element of the transducer is a standing high aspect ratio cilium in the shape of a narrow thin curved beam (tape-like), which can be easily fabricated in micro-/nanotechnology. The method is based on considering the system of partial differential equations describing the motion of the compressible viscous fluid in an acoustic linearized approximation, and representation of the velocity field as a viscous acoustic single-layer potential. The boundary conditions, stating the cancellation of the velocity components on the solid beam, yield a two-dimensional (2-D) system of three integral equations over the beam’s surface for the traction components. In the case of a narrow cilium, the system of integral equations furnishes a system of two 1-D integral equations over the symmetry curve of the structure for obtaining the tangential and normal components of the traction. This system is solved numerically by a finite (boundary) element method. The numerical code written for solving the problem was applied to some particular structures. The last structure is similar to the trichobothrium of a spider Cupiennius salei. The results obtained show that the curvature of the hair is enhancing sensitivity to flows directed normal to the main shaft of the hair confirming the assertion of Barth et al. [Philos. Trans. R. This paper applies the concept of optimal boundary control for solving inverse problems in shallow water acoustics. To treat the controllability problem, a continuous analytic adjoint model is derived for the Claerbout wide-angle parabolic equation (PE) using a generalized nonlocal impedance boundary condition at the water-bottom interface. While the potential of adjoint methodology has been recently demonstrated for ocean acoustic tomography, this approach combines the advantages of exact transparent boundary conditions for the wide-angle PE with the concept of adjoint-based optimal control. In contrast to meta-heuristic approaches the inversion procedure itself is directly controlled by the waveguide physics and, in a numerical implementation based on conjugate gradient optimization, many fewer iterations are required for assessment of an environment that is supported by the underlying subbottom model. Furthermore, since regularization schemes are particularly important to enhance the performance of full-field acoustic inversion, special attention is devoted to the application of penalization methods to the adjoint optimization formalism. Regularization incorporates additional information about the desired solution in order to stabilize ill-posed inverse problems and identify useful solutions, a feature that is of particular importance for inversion of field data sampled on a vertical receiver array in the presence of measurement noise and modeling uncertainty. The analysis of fluid-structure coupled waveforms and the attenuation of these waveforms in a flexible waveguide is carried out. The physical configuration contains an expansion chamber connected by an extended inlet/outlet by means of vertical lined flanges. The governing boundary value problem is solved by using Mode-Matching (MM) technique. The associated eigen expansions of field potentials include non-orthogonal eigenfunctions and the related eigen-sub-systems are classified in the non-Sturm Liouville category, whereby the use of generalized orthogonal characteristics has ensured the point-wise convergence of solution. The low frequency approximation (LFA) which relies on the limited propagating modes is developed and is compared with MM solution. In the low frequency regime, a good agreement between MM and LFA results is found. Furthermore, the numerical experiments are performed to analyze the effects of absorbent linings and edge conditions on the attenuation of flexural modes. The guiding structure is exited with the structure-borne mode incident as well as the fluid-borne mode incident. To solve the linear acoustic equations for room acoustic purposes, the performance of the time-domain nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is evaluated. A nodal DG method is used for the evaluation of the spatial derivatives, and for the time-integration an explicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta method is adopted. The scheme supports a high order approximation on unstructured meshes. To model frequency-independent real-valued impedance boundary conditions, a formulation based on the plane wave reflection coefficient is proposed. Semi-discrete stability of the scheme is analyzed using the energy method. The performance of the DG method is evaluated for four three-dimensional configurations. The first two cases concern sound propagations in free field and over a flat impedance ground surface. Results show that the solution converges with increasing DG polynomial order and the accuracy of the impedance boundary condition is independent on the incidence angle. The third configuration is a cuboid room with rigid boundaries, for which an analytical solution serves as the reference solution. Sound propagation in a flow duct is a complex and technically challenging problem. The presence of flexible vibrating walls inside the duct creates additional difficulties to the problem due to the complex vibro-acoustic and aero-acoustic couplings involved in the system. An accurate prediction of the coupled system response is of great importance for a good understanding of the underlying physics as well as the optimal design of relevant noise suppression devices. In the present work, a unified energy formulation is proposed for the fully coupled structural-acoustic modelling of a duct-mounted membrane backed by an acoustic cavity with a grazing flow. Sufficiently smoothed admissible functions, taking the form of a combination of Fourier series and supplementary polynomials, are constructed to overcome the differential discontinuities for various boundary and/or coupling conditions. The formulation allows the obtention of all relevant vibro-acoustic field information in conjunction with the generalized Lighthill equation and Rayleigh-Ritz procedure. The validation and convergence studies show the accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed model. Results show the strong structural-acoustic interaction in such a duct-membrane-cavity system, and the flow affects resonant amplitude of membrane-dominant modes significantly. Some cross-zones can be observed for the membrane kinetic energy frequency response with low Mach number cases, especially when a higher tension is applied to the membrane. Analyses on the structural-acoustic coupling strength indicate that the coupling between the odd-even structural modes becomes more significant at a higher Mach number compared with odd-odd and even-even mode pairs. It is also shown that adjusting the boundary constraint of the membrane or imposing a higher tensile force allows impairing the adverse influence of the flow in the duct on sound attenuation. The acoustic fields and streaming in a confined fluid depend strongly on the viscous boundary layer forming near the wall. The width of this layer is typically much smaller than the bulk length scale set by the geometry or the acoustic wavelength, which makes direct numerical simulations challenging. Based on this separation in length scales, the classical theory of pressure acoustics is extended by deriving a boundary condition for the acoustic pressure that takes viscous boundary-layer effects fully into account. Using the same length-scale separation for the steady second-order streaming, and combining it with time-averaged short-range products of first-order fields, the usual limiting-velocity theory is replaced with an analytical slip-velocity condition on the long-range streaming field at the wall. The derived boundary conditions are valid for oscillating cavities of arbitrary shape and wall motion, as long as both the wall curvature and displacement amplitude are sufficiently small. Finally, the theory is validated by comparison with direct numerical simulation in two examples of two-dimensional water-filled cavities: The well-studied rectangular cavity with prescribed wall actuation, and a more generic elliptical cavity embedded in an externally actuated rectangular elastic glass block. An analytical model is presented of axisymmetric circular hollow piezoelectric ceramic cylinders with arbitrary dimensions and boundary conditions. Forced vibrations of the cylinders with specified potentials on the electroded surfaces and displacement or stress on the boundaries are considered. The exact, linearized, axisymmetric governing equations are used in the analysis. Three series solutions are used, and each term in each series is an exact solution to the exact governing equations of motion. The terms in the series expressions for components of displacement, stress, electric potential, and electrical displacement are products of Bessel and sinusoidal functions and are orthogonal to other terms. Complete sets of functions in the radial and axial directions are formed by terms in the first series and the other two, respectively. It is, therefore, possible to satisfy arbitrary boundary conditions on all surfaces of the hollow piezoelectric cylinder. Numerical results are presented for hollow piezoelectric cylinders of various dimensions. Input electrical admittance and displacements are computed for three special cases in bands that include several resonance frequencies, and they are in excellent agreement with those computed using atila—a finite element package. A method is presented to design an optimal unimorph beam that flexes and generates voltage in response to a distributed load acting over its length using an analytical model. The objective is to design a beam that resonates at a specified frequency at which there is a peak in the excitation. The associated open-circuit voltage sensitivity and gain bandwidth product are functions to be maximized. For specific boundary conditions and pairs of materials, the dimensional ratio of the thickness of the piezoelectric layer to the square of the length of the beam is chosen such that the beam resonates at the specified frequency. The two optimum values of the dimensionless ratio of the thicknesses of the elastic and piezoelectric layers associated with the maximum values of the two functions of interest are determined through a simple one-dimensional search. Figures of merit and numerical results are used to show the effect of boundary conditions and properties of materials on the functions of interest. All beams with the optimum ratio of thicknesses are equally good and the dimensions of a beam for a specific application are to be chosen by considering principles of design for manufacture and the external electronic circuit. The development of reliable guided waves inspection systems is conditioned by an accurate knowledge of their dispersive properties. The semi-analytical finite element method has been proven to be very practical for modeling wave propagation in arbitrary cross-section waveguides. However, when it comes to computations on complex geometries to a given accuracy, it still has a major drawback: the high consumption of resources. Recently, discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DG-FEM) has been found advantageous over the standard finite element method when applied as well in the frequency domain. In this work, a high-order method for the computation of Lamb mode characteristics in plates is proposed. The problem is discretised using a class of DG-FEM, namely, the interior penalty methods family. The analytical validation is performed through the homogeneous isotropic case with traction-free boundary conditions. Afterwards, functionally graded material plates are analysed and a numerical example is presented. It was found that the obtained results are in good agreement with those found in the literature. A model is presented of a composite beam with one elastic and one piezoelectric layer. A reduced set of piezoelectric equations of state that has only the longitudinal components of stress and strain and the transverse components of electric field and charge density is consistently used to include the effect of piezoelectric coupling in all the equations. The equi-potential boundary conditions on the electrodes, the open-circuit condition, and the Gauss condition are satisfied. The position of the neutral axis and the dynamic equilibrium equation are derived after including the effect of piezoelectric coupling. All equations are combined to derive an equation of motion that contains only the displacement and the mechanical excitation. The solution to the equation is expressed in terms of a complete set of functions and an auxiliary function that contains the electric potential. The latter is needed to satisfy piezoelectric boundary conditions at the ends of the beam. The electric potential varies along the length of the beam and has a quadratic variation between the electrodes. Analytical expressions for displacement and potential, and numerical results at low frequencies and in the neighborhood of resonance, are presented for certain sets of boundary conditions. Resonator techniques can be successfully used to extract effective medium properties from dispersive materials. However, in some cases the dispersion can cause modes to repeat. If repeated modes are not taken into account, the useful range of the resonator technique is limited. A resonance tube containing tethered balloons is used to create a dispersive effective medium. Resonator measurements show that modes do repeat. Direct measurement of the mode shapes allows exploitation of all longitudinal radially symmetric modes and expands the frequency range of the technique. A theoretical model is also used to predict when modes repeat. For the presented data set this method increases the measurement range from below 160 Hz to 3000 Hz excluding the stop band where resonances are damped. An equivalent source method is developed for solving transient acoustic boundary value problems. The method assumes the boundary surface is discretized in terms of triangular or quadrilateral elements and that the solution is represented using the acoustic fields of discrete sources placed at the element centers. Also, the boundary condition is assumed to be specified for the normal component of the surface velocity as a function of time, and the source amplitudes are determined to match the known elemental volume velocity vector at a series of discrete time steps. Equations are given for marching-on-in-time schemes to solve for the source amplitudes at each time step for simple, dipole, and tripole source formulations. Several example problems are solved to illustrate the results and to validate the formulations, including problems with closed boundary surfaces where long-time numerical instabilities typically occur. A simple relationship between the simple and dipole source amplitudes in the tripole source formulation is derived so that the source radiates primarily in the direction of the outward surface normal. The Kirchhoff approximation (KA) is used to model backscatter of sound from a partially exposed, rigid sphere at a flat free interface of two homogenous media. Scattered wavefields are calculated through numerical integration on the sphere of the Kirchhoff integral, requiring detailed knowledge of the illuminated region for each scattering path. This approach avoids amplitude discontinuities resulting from geometric transitions in the number of reflected rays. Reflections from the interface are modeled through use of an image source, positioned symmetrically relative to the real source. Results are compared to experimentally obtained backscattering records from elastic spheres at an air-water interface, as well as to an exact partial wave series for a half exposed sphere. These comparisons highlight the omission of Franz-type reflections from consideration within the KA, and the consequences of this omission are discussed. The results can be extended to boundary conditions beyond the ideal free surface limit, and are applicable to the problem of scattering by underwater objects partially buried in sand. A three-dimensional continuum model of vocal fold posturing was developed to investigate laryngeal muscular control of vocal fold geometry, stiffness, and tension, which are difficult to measure in live humans or in vivo models. This model was able to qualitatively reproduce in vivo experimental observations of laryngeal control of vocal fold posturing, despite the many simplifications which are necessary due to the lack of accurate data of laryngeal geometry and material properties. The results present a first comprehensive study of the co-variations between glottal width, vocal fold length, stiffness, tension at different conditions of individual, and combined laryngeal muscle activation. In a spherical coordinate system, interior sound field can be expressed in terms of a series of Fourier-Bessel expansions. The process that obtains the expansion coefficients by use of a microphone array (e.g., a spherical microphone array) is called spatial encoding. Until now spatial encoding has mainly been examined in a free field or a diffuse field which can be modeled as a sum of plane waves. For spatial encoding within an enclosure at low frequencies, special challenges would be encountered in two aspects. First, the expansions are influenced by array configurations. Second, an acoustic mode based model instead of a plane wave based one should be considered. This study focuses on these challenges. Different kinds of array configurations were compared specifically at low frequencies, and the spatial encoding for the cylindrical cavity modes was investigated. It was found that the spherical array with cardioid microphones was optimal when kr < 1, the cavity modes can be effectively represented by only a sparse subset of expansion coefficients and a good reproduction can be achieved even outside the spherical valid region, which demonstrates an effective alternative way to describe the cylindrical cavity modes and can be implemented efficiently in practice.
