Investigating the structure-property correlation in porous materials is a fundamental and consistent focus in various scientific domains, especially within sorption research. Metal oxide clusters with capping ligands, characterized by intrinsic cavities formed through specific solid-state packing, demonstrate significant potential as versatile platforms for sorption investigations due to their precisely tunable atomic structures and inherent long-range order. This study presents a series of Ti 8 Ce 2 -oxo clusters with subtle variations in coordinated linkers and explores their sorption behavior. Notably, Ti 8 Ce 2 -BA (BA denotes benzoic acid) manifests a distinctive two-step profile during the CO 2 adsorption, accompanied by a hysteresis loop. This observation marks a new instance within the metal oxide cluster field. Of intrigue, the presence of unsaturated Ce(IV) sites was found to be correlated with the stepped sorption property. Moreover, the introduction of an electrophilic fluorine atom, positioned ortho or para to the benzoic acid, facilitated precise control over gate pressure and stepped sorption quantities. Advanced in situ techniques systematically unraveled the underlying mechanism behind this unique sorption behavior. The findings elucidate that robust Lewis base-acid interactions are established between the CO 2 molecules and Ce ions, consequently altering the conformation of coordinated linkers. Conversely, the F atoms primarily contribute to gate pressure variation by influencing the Lewis acidity of the Ce sites. This research advances the understanding in fabricating metal-oxo clusters with structural flexibility and provides profound insights into their host-guest interaction motifs. These insights hold substantial promise across diverse fields and offer valuable guidance for future adsorbent designs grounded in fundamental theories of structure-property relationships.

Despite the fascinating developments in design and synthesis of artificial molecular machines operating at the nanoscales, translating molecular motion along multiple length scales and inducing mechanical motion of a three-dimensional macroscopic entity remains an important challenge. The key to addressing this amplification of motion relies on the effective organization of molecular machines in a well-defined environment. By taking advantage of long-range orientational order and hierarchical structures of liquid crystals and unidirectional rotation of light-driven molecular motors, we report here photoresponsive biomimetic functions of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) by the repetitive unidirectional rotation of molecular motors using 3D printing. Molecular motors were built in the main chain of liquid crystals oligomers to serve as photoactuators. The oligomers were then used as the ink, and liquid crystal elastomers with different morphologies were printed. The obtained LCEs are able to conduct multiple types of motions including bending, helical coiling, closing of petals, and flipping of wings of a butterfly upon UV illumination, which paves the way for future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex actuating functions.

A rhodium-catalyzed 3-component conjunctive diastereo- and regioselective arylamidation of (homo)allylic sulfides, organon boronic acids, and dioxazolones is reported. These reactions deliver the 1,2-insertion and 2,1-insertion arylamidation products, respectively, for allylic sulfides and homoallylic sulfides. The enantioselective arylamidation of terminal and internal allylic sulfides is achieved, furnishing various 1,3- N,S compounds featuring one or two contiguous stereocenters in high yields and with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Mechanistic studies suggest a change in the turnover-limiting and selectivity-determining steps induced by the native and easily removable sulfide group.

Achieving time-dependent phosphorescence color (TDPC) in organic materials is attractive but extremely challenging due to the nonradiative decay and modulation puzzle of triplet state. Herein, xylan, a hemicellulose waste from the paper mill, was used to construct carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with clusterization-triggered room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). CPDs were endowed with tuneable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation of heteroatom groups, which could be confined in silica to simultaneously activate surface oxide-related low-energy and cross-linked core N-related high-energy emissive centers. Thus, the blue emissive center with a lifetime of 425.6 ms and green emissive center with a longer lifetime of 1506 ms coexisted in the confined CPDs; the former was the dominant contribution to RTP at first, and the latter became dominant over time, leading to a typical TDPC evolution with large color contrast from blue to blue-green and then to green. Meanwhile, the TDPC could remain unobstructed after the confined CPDs were soaked in water for more than a month. The CPDs were successfully applied in location and deformation imaging of hydrogel and advanced dynamic information encryption and anticounterfeiting. The work may shed new light on the design of TDPC materials and broaden the high-value use of paper-mill waste xylan.

Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer from the natural and renewable lignocellulosic biomass resource. Developing highly efficient catalysts for lignin depolymerization to produce valuable monophenols with high yield and selectivity remains a desirable but challenging target in this field. Here, we design a synergistic catalyst combining atomically dispersed Mo centers and Al Lewis acid sites on a MgO substrate (Mo 1 Al/MgO) for the depolymerization of Eucalyptus lignin via the β-aryl ether bond cleavage. A near-theoretical monophenol yield of 46% with an ultrahigh selectivity of 92% for coniferyl and sinapyl methyl ether, as well as good cycling durability, was achieved simultaneously by Mo 1 Al/MgO in an inert N 2 atmosphere. First-principles calculations and control catalytic experiments confirmed the synergistic catalysis mechanism between Mo 1 -O 5 single-atom centers and the neighboring Al Lewis acid sites with the participation of a methanol solvent. This study validates the feasibility of designing better-performing catalysts with synergistic multiactive sites for the efficient and selective disassembly of complex renewable biopolymers into highly value-added products with lower cost and greater security.

Carbodiimide-fueled anhydride bond formation has been used to enhance the mechanical properties of permanently crosslinked polymer networks, giving materials that exhibit transitions from soft gels to covalently reinforced gels, eventually returning to the original soft gels. Temporary changes in mechanical properties result from a transient network of anhydride crosslinks, which eventually dissipate by hydrolysis. Over an order of magnitude increase in the storage modulus is possible through carbodiimide fueling. The time-dependent mechanical properties can be modulated by the concentration of carbodiimide, temperature, and primary chain architecture. Because the materials remain rheological solids, new material functions such as temporally controlled adhesion and rewritable spatial patterns of mechanical properties have been realized.

Recent developments in artificial molecular machines have enabled precisely controlled molecular motion, which allows several distinct mechanical operations at the nanoscale. However, harnessing and amplifying molecular motion along multiple length scales to induce macroscopic motion are still major challenges and comprise an important next step toward future actuators and soft robotics. The key to addressing this challenge relies on effective integration of synthetic molecular machines in a hierarchically aligned structure so numerous individual molecular motions can be collected in a cooperative way and amplified to higher length scales and eventually lead to macroscopic motion. Here, we report the complex motion of liquid crystal networks embedded with molecular motors triggered by single-wavelength illumination. By design, both racemic and enantiomerically pure molecular motors are programmably integrated into liquid crystal networks with a defined orientation. The motors have multiple functions acting as cross-linkers, actuators, and chiral dopants inside the network. The collective rotary motion of motors resulted in multiple types of motion of the polymeric film, including bending, wavy motion, fast unidirectional movement on surfaces, and synchronized helical motion with different handedness, paving the way for the future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex functions.

Rationally tailoring the coordination environments of metal single atoms (SAs) is an effective approach to promote their catalytic performances, which, however, remains as a challenge to date. Here, we report a novel misplaced deposition strategy for the fabrication of differently coordinated dual-metal hetero-SAs. Systematic characterization results imply that the as-synthesized dual-metal hetero-SAs (exemplified by Cu and Co) are affixed to a hierarchical carbon support via Cu-C 4 and Co-N 4 coordination bonds. Density functional theory studies reveal that the strong synergistic interactions between the asymmetrically deployed CuC 4 and CoN 4 sites lead to remarkably polarized charge distributions, i.e., electron accumulation and deficiency around CuC 4 and CoN 4 sites, respectively. The obtained CuC 4 /CoN 4 @HC catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced capability in substrate adsorption and O 2 activation, achieving superior catalytic performances in the oxidative esterification of aromatic aldehydes in comparison with the Cu- and Co-based SA counterparts.

We now report metal-free organic dyes having a new type of indoline structure, which exhibits high efficiencies in dye-sensitized solar cells. The solar energy to current conversion efficiencies with the new indoline dye was 6.51%. Under the same conditions, the N3 dye was 7.89% and the N719 dye was 8.26%. The new indoline dye was optimized for the amount of 4-tert-butyl pyridine in the electrolyte and cholic acid as a coadsorbent. Subsequently, the solar energy to current conversion efficiencies reached 8.00%. This value was the highest obtained efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic dyes without an antireflection layer.
