Abstract

A novel approach to the design of a model system for the photosynthetic reaction center is introduced. The donor-acceptor components and the resulting redox species are spatially separated by reconstitution of a Zn(II)-protoporphyrin-bipyridinium photosensitizer-acceptor dyad in apo-myoglobin. The reconstituted myoglobin, in the presence of Ru(NH3)(sub 6)(super 3+) as secondary electron acceptor, mimics functions of the photosynthetic reaction center.

Abstract

The unique electronic and optical applications of ordered metal nanoparticles spurred scientific investigations. The arrangement of layered three-dimensional superstructures composed of the bis-bipyridinium-Zn(II)-proto-porphyrin IX as photosensitizer-acceptor dyad and nanosize Au-particles were examined. Intramolecular electron transfer and fast recombination of redox-photoproducts were observed during the photoexcitation of the dyad in an aqueous solution. The conductivity of the samples indicate their potential use as materials in photocells.
