The finite size effect of proton conductivity of amorphous silicate thin films, a-M(0.1)Si(0.9)O(x) (M = Al, Ga, Hf, Ti, Ta, and La), was investigated. The proton conductivity across films, σ, was measured in dry air by changing the thickness in the range of 10-1000 nm. σ of the films with M = Al, Ga, and Ta was elevated in a power law by decreasing thickness into less than a few hundred nanometers, and the increment was saturated at a thickness of several 10's of nanometers. On the other hand, σ of the films with M = Hf, Ti, and La was not related to the decrease of the thickness in the range of >10 nm. Thickness-dependent conductivity of the former could be numerically simulated by a percolative resistor network model that involves the randomly distributed array of two kinds of resistors R(1) and R(2) (R(1) > R(2)) in the form of a simple cubic-type lattice. High-resolution TEM clarified that a-M(0.1)Si(0.9)O(x) films involved heterogeneous microstructures made of the condensed domain and the surrounding uncondensed matrix due to the fluctuation of glass networks on the nanometer scale. The condensed domain had a wormlike shape with an average length of several 10's of nanometers and performed the role of the proton conduction pathway penetrating through the poorly conducting matrix. It was concluded that the thickness-dependent conductivity could be identical to finite-size scaling of the percolative network of the interconnected domains in the nanometer range.

Amorphous aluminosilicate nanofilms, a-Al(0.1)Si(0.9)O(x), exhibit unique size-enhancement of the proton conductivity along the thickness direction because of the presence of the zeolite-like, acid site network with the mesoscopically sized dimension inside glass matrix. The dense films with the thickness of 22-1400 nm were uniformly formed over the electrode substrate in nanometer thickness precision by multiple spin-coating with a mixed precursor sol. XANES measurements indicated that the basic framework of a-Al(0.1)Si(0.9)O(x) films was similar to the zeolitic one, consisting of the corner-linkage of SiO(4) and AlO(4) tetrahedral units. These films revealed the complex temperature- and humidity-dependency of proton conductivity by the existence of two kinds of protonic carriers: Brønsted acidic protons and Lewis acidic protons. The Brønsted acidic protons could be persistent in amorphous films at around 500 degrees C, as checked by thermal desorption spectroscopy, so that the film exhibited the humidity-independent proton conductivity at temperatures above 300 degrees C. Furthermore, the conductivity across the film sigma increased in a power low by reduction of the film thickness d to less than 120 nm as sigma proportional, variant d(-tau), and it was saturated when the thickness become less than 40 nm. The observed scaling index tau was 2.2 in agreement with the value of the theoretical index (2.3) of cluster size scaling in a three-dimensional percolation system. This conduction behavior is explicable by finite size-scaling of the highly conductive pathway based on the interconnected Brønsted acid centers in the range of a few tens to hundreds of nanometers.

Cadmium hydroxide nanostrands with a diameter of 1.9 nm were spontaneously formed by raising the pH of a dilute Cd(NO3)2 solution. The length reaches a few micrometers and the aspect ratio exceeds 1000. The crystallographic structure was successfully elucidated by high-resolution electron microscopy. The surface of the nanostrands was remarkably positively charged and adsorbed an astonishing number of negatively charged dye molecules.

Surface sol-gel process was used to replicate the hierarchical morphology of natural cellulosic substances with nanometer precision. The resultant artificial fossils are ceramic nanomaterials composed of metal oxide nanotubes.

Ag-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared directly in ultrathin TiO(2)-gel films by a stepwise ion-exchange/reduction approach. Ion-exchange sites were created in ultrathin films using Mg(2+) ions as template. Ag(+) ion was then incorporated by ion exchange, and converted into metallic nanoparticles by low-temperature H(2) plasma, regenerating ion-exchange sites. The same procedure was then carried out for Pd(2+) ion, producing Pd-on-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles, as TEM observation and plasmon resonance absorption indicate. By contrast, reversed metal incorporation procedure appeared to give a mixture of individual Ag and Pd nanoparticles, as confirmed by TEM, absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For hydrogenation of methyl acrylate, the catalytic activity of the Pd-on-Ag nanoparticle is 367 times as large as that of commercial Pd black and 1.6 times as large as that of Pd monometallic nanoparticle. The outstanding catalytic activity was explicable by the large fraction of the surface-exposed Pd atoms. The formation process of the bimetallic nanoparticle and their general morphological feature are discussed.

Spontaneous formation of complementary hydrogen-bond pairs and their hierarchical self-assembly (reconstitution) into chiral supramolecular membranes are achieved in water by mixing amphiphilic pairs of glutamate-derived melamine 6 and ammonium-derivatized azobenzene cyanuric acid 4. Electron microscopy is used to observe formation of helical superstructures, which are distinct from the aggregate structures observed for each of the single components in water. In addition, a spectral blue-shift and induced circular dichroism (ICD) with exciton coupling are observed for the pi-pi* absorption of the azobenzene chromophores. These observations are consistent with the reconstitution of the hydrogen-bond-mediated supramolecular membrane 6-4. Spectral titration experiments indicate the stoichiometric integration of the complementary subunits with an association constant of 1.13 x 10(5) M(-1). This value is considerably larger than those reported for the artificial hydrogen-bonding complexes in aqueous media. The remarkable reconstitution efficiency is ascribed to the hydrophobically driven self-organization of the amphiphilic, linear hydrogen-bond networks in water. Molecular structure of the complementary subunits plays an important role in the complexation process since it is restricted by the photoisomerized cis-azobenzene subunit. On the other hand, thermally regenerated trans-isomer 4 undergoes facile complexation with the counterpart 6. The present reconstitution of supramolecular membranes provides the first example of complementary hydrogen-bond-directed formation of soluble, mesoscopic supramolecular assemblies in water.
