Despite their potential relevance as molecular models for industrial and biological catalysis, well-defined mononuclear iron carbide complexes are unknown, in part due to the limited number of appropriate C 1 synthons. Here, we show the ability of the cyaphide anion (C≡P - ) to serve as a C 1 source. The high spin ( S = 2) cyaphide complex PhB( t BuIm) 3 Fe-C≡P (PhB( t BuIm) 3 - = phenyl(tris(3- tert -butylimidazol-2-ylidene)borate) is readily accessed using the new cyaphide transfer reagent [Mg( Dipp NacNac)(CP)] 2 ( Dipp NacNac = CH{C(CH 3 )N(Dipp)} 2 and Dipp = 2,6-di(iso-propyl)phenyl). Phosphorus atom abstraction is effected by the three-coordinate Mo(III) complex Mo(N t BuAr) 3 (Ar = 3,5-Me 2 C 6 H 3 ), which produces the known phosphide ( t BuArN) 3 Mo≡P along with a transient iron carbide complex PhB( t BuIm) 3 Fe≡C. Electronic structure calculations reveal that PhB( t BuIm) 3 Fe≡C adopts a doublet ground state with nonzero spin density on the carbide ligand. While isolation of this complex is thwarted by rapid dimerization to afford the corresponding diiron ethynediyl complex, the carbide can be intercepted by styrene to provide an iron alkylidene.

We report a neutral high-spin diradical of chiral C 2 -symmetric bis[5]diazahelicene with Δ E ST ≈ 0.4 kcal mol -1 , as determined by EPR spectroscopy/SQUID magnetometry. The diradical is the most persistent among all high-spin aminyl radicals reported to date by a factor of 20, with a half-life of up to 6 days in 2-MeTHF at room temperature. Its triplet ground state and excellent persistence may be associated with the unique spin density distribution within the dihydrophenazine moiety, which characterizes two effective 3-electron C-N bonds analogous to the N-O bond of a nitroxide radical. The enantiomerically enriched (ee ≥ 94%) ( MM )- and ( PP )-enantiomers of the precursors to the diradicals are obtained by either preparative chiral supercritical fluid chromatography or resolution via functionalization with the chiral auxiliary of the C 2 -symmetric racemic tetraamine. The barrier for the racemization of the solid tetraamine is Δ G ‡ = 43 ± 0.01 kcal mol -1 in the 483-523 K range. The experimentally estimated lower limit of the barrier for the racemization of a diradical, Δ G ‡ ≥ 26 kcal mol -1 in 2-MeTHF at 293 K, is comparable to the DFT-determined barrier of Δ G ‡ = 31 kcal mol -1 in the gas phase at 298 K. While the enantiomerically pure tetraamine displays strong chiroptical properties, with anisotropy factor | g | = |Δε|/ε = 0.036 at 376 nm, | g | ≈ 0.005 at 548 nm of the high-spin diradical is comparable to that recently reported triplet ground-state diradical dication. Notably, the radical anion intermediate in the generation of diradical exhibits a large SOMO-HOMO inversion, SHI = 35 kcal mol -1 .

We report complex formation between the chloroacetamide 2,6-diazaadamantane nitroxide radical (ClA-DZD) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB-7), for which the association constant in water, K a M 6 M -1 , is at least 1 order of magnitude higher than the previously studied organic radicals. The radical is highly immobilized by CB-7, as indicated by the increase in the rotational correlation time, τ rot , by a factor of 36, relative to that in the buffer solution. The X-ray structure of ClA-DZD@CB-7 shows the encapsulated DZD guest inside the undistorted CB-7 host, with the pendant group protruding outside. Upon addition of CB-7 to T4 Lysozyme (T4L) doubly spin-labeled with the iodoacetamide derivative of DZD, we observe the increase in τ rot and electron spin coherence time, T m , along with the narrowing of interspin distance distributions. Sensitivity of the DEER measurements at 83 K increases by a factor 4-9, compared to the common spin label such as MTSL, which is not affected by CB-7. Interspin distances of 3 nm could be reliably measured in water/glycerol up to temperatures near the glass transition/melting temperature of the matrix at 200 K, thus bringing us closer to the goal of supramolecular recognition-enabled long-distance DEER measurements at near physiological temperatures. The X-ray structure of DZD-T4L 65 at 1.12 Å resolution allows for unambiguous modeling of the DZD label (0.88 occupancy), indicating an undisturbed structure and conformation of the protein.

Open-shell organic molecules, including S = 1/2 radicals, may provide enhanced properties for several emerging technologies; however, relatively few synthesized to date possess robust thermal stability and processability. We report the synthesis of S = 1/2 biphenylene-fused tetrazolinyl radicals 1 and 2 . Both radicals possess near-perfect planar structures based on their X-ray structures and density-functional theory (DFT) computations. Radical 1 possesses outstanding thermal stability as indicated by the onset of decomposition at 269 °C, based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data. Both radicals possess very low oxidation potentials <0 V (vs. SCE) and their electrochemical energy gaps, E cell ≈ 0.9 eV, are rather low. Magnetic properties of polycrystalline 1 are characterized by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry revealing a one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with exchange coupling constant J '/ k ≈ -22.0 K. Radical 1 in toluene glass possesses a long electron spin coherence time, T m ≈ 7 μs in the 40-80 K temperature range, a property advantageous for potential applications as a molecular spin qubit. Radical 1 is evaporated under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) forming assemblies of intact radicals on a silicon substrate, as confirmed by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicate that the radical molecules form nanoneedles on the substrate. The nanoneedles are stable for at least 64 hours under air as monitored by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of the thicker assemblies, prepared by UHV evaporation, indicate radical decay according to first-order kinetics with a long half-life of 50 ± 4 days at ambient conditions.

Aspects of the proposed pathway combining chain-end and enantiomorphic site control for the stereospecific polymerization of lactide (LA) were investigated through studies of aluminum complexes supported by enantiopure and racemic bipyrrolidine-based salan ligands, Lig 1 AlOBn and Lig 2 AlOBn. Spectroscopic analysis of stoichiometric initiation reactions and the definition of the stereochemistry of the selective formation of the "match" single-insertion products by X-ray crystallography led to key conclusions about the observed stereocontrol. Notably, it was determined to rely heavily on the preference for the trio of stereocenters around the metal to have a "match" formation ( RR -ligand + S -polymer), which works synergistically with the enantiomorphic site preference of the catalyst to ring-open next to a stereocenter of a monomer of the same chirality as that of the ligand, resulting in highly heterotactic or syndiotactic PLA from rac - or meso -LA, respectively.

We report high-spin aminyl triradicals with near-planar triphenylene backbones. Near-planarity of the fused aminyl radicals and the 2,6,10-triphenylene ferromagnetic coupling unit (FCU), magnetically equivalent to three fused 3,4'-biphenyl FCUs, assures an effective 2p π -2p π overlap within the cross-conjugated π-system, leading to an S = 3/2 (quartet) ground state that is well separated from low-spin excited doublet states. Thermal populations of the low-spin ( S = 1/2) excited states are detectable both by SQUID magnetometry and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, providing doublet-quartet energy gaps, Δ E DQ , corresponding to >85% population of the quartet ground states at room temperature. Notably, EPR-based determination of Δ E DQ relies on direct detection of the quartet ground state and doublet excited states. The Δ E DQ values are 1.0-1.1 kcal mol -1 , with the more sterically shielded triradical having the larger value. The half-life of the more sterically shielded triradical in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) is about 6 h at room temperature. The less sterically shielded triradical in 2-MeTHF decomposes at 158 K with a half-life of about 4 h, while at 195 K, the half-life is still about 2 h. The dominant products of the decay of triradicals are the corresponding triamines, suggesting hydrogen atom abstraction from the solvent as the primary mechanism. This study expands the frontier of the open-shell PAHs/nanographenes, of which the unique electronic, nonlinear optical, and magnetic properties could be useful in the development of novel organic electronics, photonics, and spintronics.

Herein, we report the reactions of an Fe(II) imido complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDipp] - ( 1 ) with internal alkynes and isobutyronitrile, affording the Fe amido allenyl complexes [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe(NHDipp)((R 1 )C═C═C(R 2 )(H))] - (R 1 = Et or n Pr; R 2 = Me or Et, 2-5 ) and the Fe amido keteniminate complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe(NHDipp)(N═C═CMe 2 )K(THF)] n ( 8-K ), respectively. These transformations represent the previously unknown ene-like reactivity of a metal-ligand multiple bond. Stoichiometric reactions of 2 and 8-K with DippNH 2 lead to the regeneration of 3-hexyne and isobutyronitrile, respectively, with concomitant formation of the bis(anilido) complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe(NHDipp) 2 ] - ( 9 ). These results provide the platform for 1 as an efficient catalyst for the selective α-deuteration of nitriles and alkynes by RND 2 . These results demonstrate a new reaction mode for metal imido complexes and suggest new avenues for using the imido ligand in catalysis.

Triplet ground-state organic molecules are of interest with respect to several emerging technologies but usually show limited stability, especially as thin films. We report an organic diradical, consisting of two Blatter radicals, that possesses a triplet ground state with a singlet-triplet energy gap, Δ E ST ≈ 0.4-0.5 kcal mol -1 (2 J / k ≈ 220-275 K). The diradical possesses robust thermal stability, with an onset of decomposition above 264 °C (TGA). In toluene/chloroform, glassy matrix, and fluid solution, an equilibrium between two conformations with Δ E ST ≈ 0.4 kcal mol -1 and Δ E ST ≈ -0.7 kcal mol -1 is observed, favoring the triplet ground state over the singlet ground-state conformation in the 110-330 K temperature range. The diradical with the triplet ground-state conformation is found exclusively in crystals and in a polystyrene matrix. The crystalline neutral diradical is a good electrical conductor with conductivity comparable to the thoroughly optimized bis(thiazolyl)-related monoradicals. This is surprising because the triplet ground state implies that the underlying π-system is cross-conjugated and thus is not compatible with either good conductance or electron delocalization. The diradical is evaporated under ultra-high vacuum to form thin films, which are stable in air for at least 18 h, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies.

The presence of redox innocent metal ions has been proposed to modulate the reactivity of metal ligand multiple bonds; however, insight from structure/function relationships is limited. Here, alkali metal reduction of the Fe(III) imido complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDipp] ( 1 ) provides the series of structurally characterized Fe(II) imido complexes [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDippLi(THF) 2 ] ( 2 ), [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDippNa(THF) 3 ] ( 3 ), and [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDippK] 2 ( 4 ), in which the alkali metal cations coordinate the imido ligand. Structural investigations demonstrate that the alkali metal ions modestly lengthen the Fe═N bond distance from that in the charge separated complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDipp][K(18-C-6)THF 2 ] ( 5 ), with the longest bond observed for the smallest alkali metal ion. In contrast to 5 , the imido ligands in 2 - 4 can be protonated and alkylated to afford Fe(II) amido complexes. Combined experimental and computational studies reveal that the alkali metal polarizes the Fe═N bond, and the basicity of imido ligand increases according to 5 < 4 ≈ 3 < 2 . The basicity of the imido ligands influences the relative rates of reaction with 1,4-cyclohexadiene, specifically by gating access to complex 5 , which is the species that is active for HAT. All complexes 2 - 4 react with benzophenone form metastable Fe(II) intermediates that subsequently eliminate the metathesis product Ph 2 C═NDipp, with relative rates dependent on the alkali metal ion. By contrast, the same reaction with 5 does not lead to the formation of Ph 2 C═NDipp. These results demonstrate that the coordination of alkali metal ions dictate both the structure and reactivity of the imido ligand and moreover can direct the reactivity of reaction intermediates.

High-spin ( S = 3/2) organic triradicals may offer enhanced properties with respect to several emerging technologies, but those synthesized to date typically exhibit small doublet quartet energy gaps and/or possess limited thermal stability and processability. We report a quartet ground state triradical 3 , synthesized by a Pd(0)-catalyzed radical-radical cross-coupling reaction, which possesses two doublet-quartet energy gaps, Δ E DQ ≈ 0.2-0.3 kcal mol -1 and Δ E DQ 2 ≈ 1.2-1.8 kcal mol -1 . The triradical has a 70+% population of the quartet ground state at room temperature and good thermal stability with onset of decomposition at >160 °C under an inert atmosphere. Magnetic properties of 3 are characterized by SQUID magnetometry in polystyrene glass and by quantitative EPR spectroscopy. Triradical 3 is evaporated under ultrahigh vacuum to form thin films of intact triradicals on silicon substrate, as confirmed by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. AFM and SEM images of the ∼1 nm thick films indicate that the triradical molecules form islands on the substrate. The films are stable under ultrahigh vacuum for at least 17 h but show onset of decomposition after 4 h at ambient conditions. The drop-cast films are less prone to degradation in air and have a longer lifetime.

Reduction of the three-coordinate iron(III) imido [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDipp] ( 1 ) affords [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe═NDipp][K(18-C-6)THF 2 ] ( 2 ), a rare example of a high-spin ( S = 2) iron(II) imido complex. Unusually for a late metal imido complex, the imido ligand in 2 has nucleophilic character, as demonstrated by the reaction with DippNH 2 , which establishes an equilibrium with the bis(anilido) complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe(NHDipp) 2 ][K(18-C-6)THF 2 ] ( 3 ). In an unusual transformation, formal insertion of i PrN═C═N i Pr into the Fe═N(imido) bond yields the guanidinate [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe( i PrN) 2 CNDipp][K(18-C-6)THF 2 ] ( 4 ). Reaction of 4 with excess DippNH 2 provides 3 , along with the guanidine ( i PrNH) 2 C═NDipp. As suggested by these stoichiometric reactions, 2 is an efficient catalyst for the guanylation of carbodiimides, converting a wide range of aniline substrates under mild conditions.

Sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers offer new design paradigms for generating stimuli-responsive macromolecules with enhanced functionalities. The dynamic character of supramolecular links present challenges to sequence definition in extended supramolecular macromolecules, and design principles remain nascent. Here, we demonstrate the first example of using stoichiometry-control to specify the monomer sequence in a linear supramolecular polymer by synthesizing both a homopolymer and an alternating copolymer from the same glycol-substituted cyanostar macrocycle and phenylene-linked diphosphate monomers. A 2:1 stoichiometry between macrocycle and diphosphate produces a supramolecular homopolymer of general formula ( A ) n comprised of repeating units of cyanostar-stabilized phosphate-phosphate dimers. Using a 1:1 stoichiometry, an alternating ( AB ) n structure is produced with half the phosphate dimers now stabilized by the additional counter cations that emerge hierarchically after forming the stronger cyanostar-stabilized phosphate dimers. These new polymer materials and binding motifs are sufficient to bear normal and shear stress to promote significant and tunable adhesive properties. The homopolymer ( A ) n , consisting of cyanostar-stabilized anti -electrostatic linkages, shows adhesion strength comparable to commercial superglue formulations based on polycyanoacrylate but is thermally reversible. Unexpectedly, and despite including traditional ionic linkages, the alternating copolymer ( AB ) n shows weaker adhesion strength more similar to commercial white glue based on poly(vinyl acetate). Thus, the adhesion properties can be tuned over a wide range by simply controlling the stoichiometric ratio of monomers. This study offers new insight into supramolecular polymers composed of custom-designed anion and receptor monomers and demonstrates the utility of emerging functional materials based on anion-anion linkages.

The paramagnetic cyano-bridged complex PhB( t BuIm) 3 Fe-NC-Mo(N t BuAr) 3 (Ar = 3,5-Me 2 C 6 H 3 ) is readily assembled from a new four-coordinate, high-spin ( S = 2) iron(II) monocyanide complex and the three-coordinate molybdenum(III) complex Mo(N t BuAr) 3 . X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy reveal that delocalization of unpaired electron density into the cyanide π* orbitals leads to a reduction of the C-N bond order. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements, supported by electronic structure calculations, demonstrate the presence of strong antiferromagnetic exchange between spin centers, with a coupling constant of J = -122(2) cm -1 . To our knowledge, this value represents the strongest magnetic exchange coupling ever to be observed through cyanide. These results demonstrate the ability of low-coordinate metal fragments to engender extremely strong magnetic exchange coupling through cyanide by virtue of significant π-backbonding into the cyanide ligand.

Structural and spectroscopic characterization of the dimeric iron hydride complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 FeH] 2 reveals an unusual structure in which a tetrahedral iron(II) site ( S = 2) is connected to a square planar iron(II) site ( S = 1) by two bridging hydride ligands. Magnetic susceptibility reveals strong ferromagnetic coupling between iron centers, with a coupling constant of J = +110(12) cm -1 , to give an S = 3 ground state. High-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy confirms this model. A qualitative molecular orbital analysis of the electronic structure, as supported by electronic structure calculations, reveals that the observed spin configuration results from the orthogonal alignment of two geometrically distinct four-coordinate iron fragments held together by highly covalent hydride ligands.

Supramolecular polymers have enabled far-reaching fundamental science and the development of diverse macromolecular technologies owing to the reversible and noncovalent chemical connectivities that define their properties. Despite the unabated development of these materials using highly tailorable recognition elements, anion-based polymers remain rare as a result of the weak interactions they mediate. Here, we use design rules inspired by cation-driven polymers to demonstrate a new noncovalent link based on receptor-stabilized anion-anion interactions that enables the efficient linear polymerization of simple difunctional phosphonates. The linear main chain connectivity and molecular topology were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which demonstrates the rare 2:2 stoichiometry between the anionic phosphonate end groups and a pair of π-stacked cyanostar macrocycles. The stability of these links enables rapid polymerization of difunctional phosphonates employing different aliphatic linkers (C 6 H 12 , C 8 H 16 , C 10 H 20 , C 12 H 24 ). Diphosphonates with greater chain flexibility (C 12 H 24 ) enable greater polymerization with an average degree of polymerization of nine emerging at 10 mM. Viscosity measurements show a transition from oligomers to polymers at the critical polymerization concentration of 5 mM. In a rare correlation, NMR spectroscopy shows a coincident molecular signature of the polymerization at 5 mM. These polymers are highly concentration dependent, reversibly polymerize with acid and base, and respond to competitive anions. They display the design simplicity of metallo-supramolecular polymers with transfer of the strong 2:2 recognition chemistry to macromolecules. The simplicity and understanding of this new class of supramolecular polymer is anticipated to open opportunities in tailoring anion-based functional materials.

High spin ( S = 1) organic diradicals may offer enhanced properties with respect to several emerging technologies, but typically exhibit low singlet triplet energy gaps and possess limited thermal stability. We report triplet ground state diradical 2 with a large singlet-triplet energy gap, Δ E ST ≥ 1.7 kcal mol -1 , leading to nearly exclusive population of triplet ground state at room temperature, and good thermal stability with onset of decomposition at ∼160 °C under inert atmosphere. Magnetic properties of 2 and the previously prepared diradical 1 are characterized by SQUID magnetometry of polycrystalline powders, in polystyrene glass, and in other matrices. Polycrystalline diradical 2 forms a novel one-dimensional (1D) spin-1 ( S = 1) chain of organic radicals with intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling of J'/ k = -14 K, which is associated with the N···N and N···O intermolecular contacts. The intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling in 2 is by far strongest among all studied 1D S = 1 chains of organic radicals, which also makes 1D S = 1 chains of 2 most isotropic, and therefore an excellent system for studies of low-dimensional magnetism. In polystyrene glass and in frozen benzene or dibutyl phthalate solution, both 1 and 2 are monomeric. Diradical 2 is thermally robust and is evaporated under ultrahigh vacuum to form thin films of intact diradicals on silicon substrate, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on C-K NEXAFS spectra and AFM images of the ∼1.5 nm thick films, the diradical molecules form islands on the substrate with molecules stacked approximately along the crystallographic a-axis. The films are stable under ultrahigh vacuum for at least 60 h but show signs of decomposition when exposed to ambient conditions for 7 h.

A new rotamer-based strategy for negative allostery has been used to control host-host interactions and product yield upon anion complexation. Coassembly of anion dimers as guests inside two cyanostar macrocycles drives selection of one rotamer in which all ten steric groups get directed outward to destabilize triply stacked macrocycles. A large entropy penalty (Δ S) is quantified upon anion binding when the multiple dynamic rotamers collapse down to one.

The enantioselective desymmetrization of carboxylic acids by chiral Brønsted base catalysis is reported, leading to bridged bicyclic lactones with up to 94% ee. Crystallographic analysis of a substrate-catalyst complex suggests an origin of stereocontrol, reminiscent of functional Brønsted bases in biological settings, and enabled reaction optimization. The products contain an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter and can be derivatized to functionalized cyclopentanes.

The new iron(IV) nitride complex PhB( i Pr 2 Im) 3 Fe≡N reacts with 2 equiv of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) to provide PhB( i Pr 2 Im) 3 Fe(CN)(N 2 )(BAC). This unusual example of a four-electron reaction involves carbon atom transfer from BAC to create a cyanide ligand along with the alkyne i Pr 2 N-C≡C-N i Pr 2 . The iron complex is in equilibrium with an N 2 -free species. Further reaction with CO leads to formation of a CO analogue, which can be independently prepared using NaCN as the cyanide source, while reaction with B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 provides the cyanoborane derivative.

The complex (PNP)Ti═CH t Bu(CH 2 t Bu) (PNP = N[2-P i Pr 2 -4-methylphenyl] 2 - ) dehydrogenates cyclohexane to cyclohexene by forming a transient low-valent titanium-alkyl species, [(PNP)Ti(CH 2 t Bu)], which reacts with 2 equiv of quinoline (Q) at room temperature to form H 3 C t Bu and a Ti(IV) species where the less hindered C 2 ═N 1 bond of Q is ruptured and coupled to another equivalent of Q. The product isolated from this reaction is an imide with a tethered cycloamide group, (PNP)Ti═N[C 18 H 13 N] (1). Under photolytic conditions, intramolecular C-H bond activation across the imide moiety in 1 occurs to form 2, and thermolysis reverses this process. The reaction of 2 equiv of isoquinoline (Iq) with intermediate [(PNP)Ti(CH 2 t Bu)] results in regioselective cleavage of the C 1 ═N 2 and C 1 -H bonds, which eventually couple to form complex 3, a constitutional isomer of 1. Akin to 1, the transient [(PNP)Ti(CH 2 t Bu)] complex can ring-open and couple two pyridine molecules, to produce a close analogue of 1, complex (PNP)Ti═N[C 10 H 9 N] (4). Multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectra confirm structures for complexes 1-4, whereas solid-state structural analysis reveals the structures of 2, 3, and 4. DFT calculations suggest an unprecedented mechanism for ring-opening of Q where the reactive intermediate in the low-spin manifold crosses over to the high-spin surface to access a low-energy transition state but returns to the low-spin surface immediately. This double spin-crossover constitutes a rare example of a two-state reactivity, which is key for enabling the reaction at room temperature. The regioselective behavior of Iq ring-opening is found to be due to electronic effects, where the aromatic resonance of the bicycle is maintained during the key C-C coupling event.

The hierarchical assembly of colored cationic molecules with receptor-modified counteranions can be used to control optical properties in materials. However, our knowledge of when the optical properties emerge in the hierarchical organization and the variety of cation-anion salts that are available to create these materials is limited. In this work, we extend the salts from small halides to large inorganic anions and determine how the structure coevolves with the emission properties using solution assemblies. We study the chromogenic trioxatriangulenium (TOTA + ) cation and its coassembly with cyanostar (CS) macrocycles selected to modify tetrafluoroborate (BF 4 - ) counteranions through formation of 2:1 sandwich complexes. In the solid state, the TOTA + cation stacks in an alternating manner with the sandwich complexes producing new red-shifted emission and absorption bands. Critical to assigning the structural origin of the new optical features across the four levels of organization (1° → 4°) is the selection of specific solvents to produce and characterize different assemblies present in the hierarchical structure. A key species is the electrostatically stabilized ion pair between the TOTA + cation and sandwich complex. The red-shifted features only emerge when the ion pairs oligomerize together into larger (TOTA·[CS 2 BF 4 ]) n assemblies. New electronic states emerge as a result of multiple copies of the TOTA + making π-contact with cyanostar-anion complexes. Our findings and the ease with which the materials can be prepared as crystals and films by mixing the salt with a receptor provide a strong platform for the de novo design of new optical materials.

Encapsulation of unstable guests is a powerful way to enhance their stability. The lifetimes of organic anions and their radicals produced by reduction are typically short on account of reactivity with oxygen while their larger sizes preclude use of traditional anion receptors. Here we demonstrate the encapsulation and noncovalent stabilization of organic radical anions by C-H hydrogen bonding in π-stacked pairs of cyanostar macrocycles having large cavities. Using electrogenerated tetrazine radical anions, we observe significant extension of their lifetimes, facile molecular switching, and extremely large stabilization energies. The guests form threaded pseudorotaxanes. Complexation extends the radical lifetimes from 2 h to over 20 days without altering its electronic structure. Electrochemical studies show tetrazines thread inside a pair of cyanostar macrocycles following voltage-driven reduction (+e - ) of the tetrazine at -1.00 V and that the complex disassembles after reoxidation (-e - ) at -0.05 V. This reoxidation is shifted 830 mV relative to the free tetrazine radical indicating it is stabilized by an unexpectedly large -80 kJ mol -1 . The stabilization is general as shown using a dithiadiazolyl anion. This finding opens up a new approach to capturing and studying unstable anions and a radical anions when encapsulated by size-complementary anion receptors.

Triplet ground-state organic molecules are interesting with respect to several emerging technologies but typically exhibit limited stability. We report two organic diradicals, one of which possesses a triplet ground state (2J/kB = 234 ± 36 K) and robust stability at elevated temperatures. We are able to sublime this high-spin diradical under high vacuum at 140 °C with no significant decomposition.

The synthesis and characterization of two high-valent vanadium-cyclo-P3 complexes, (nacnac)V(cyclo-P3)(Ntolyl2) (1) and (nacnac)V(cyclo-P3)(OAr) (2), and an inverted sandwich derivative, [(nacnac)V(Ntolyl2)]2(μ2-η(3):η(2)-cyclo-P3) (3), are presented. These novel complexes are prepared by activating white phosphorus (P4) with three-coordinate vanadium(II) precursors. Structural metrics, redox behavior, and DFT electronic structure analysis indicate that a [cyclo-P3](3-) ligand is bound to a V(V) center in monomeric species 1 and 2. A salient feature of these new cyclo-P3 complexes is their significantly downfield shifted (by ∼300 ppm) (31)P NMR resonances, which is highly unusual compared to related complexes such as (Ar[(i)Pr]N)3Mo(cyclo-P3) (4) and other cyclo-P3 complexes that display significantly upfield shifted resonances. This NMR spectroscopic signature was thus far thought to be a diagnostic property for the cyclo-P3 ligand related to its acute endocyclic angle. Using DFT calculations, we scrutinized and conceptualized the origin of the unusual chemical shifts seen in this new class of complexes. Our analysis provides an intuitive rational paradigm for understanding the experimental (31)P NMR spectroscopic signature by relating the nuclear magnetic shielding with the electronic structure of the molecule, especially with the characteristics of metal-cyclo-P3 bonding.

Cooperative binding of ion pairs to receptors is crucial for the manipulation of salts, but a comprehensive understanding of cooperativity has been elusive. To this end, we combine experiment and theory to quantify ion-pair binding and to separate allostery from electrostatics to understand their relative contributions. We designed aryl-triazole-ether macrocycles (MC) to be semiflexible, which allows ion pairs (NaX; X = anion) to make contact, and to be monocyclic to simplify analyses. A multiequilibrium model allows us to quantify, for the first time, the experimental cooperativity, α, for the equilibrium MC·Na(+) + MC·X(-) ⇌ MC·NaX + MC, which is associated with contact ion-pair binding of NaI (α = 1300, ΔGα = -18 kJ mol(-1)) and NaClO4 (α = 400, ΔGα = -15 kJ mol(-1)) in 4:1 dichloromethane-acetonitrile. We used accurate energies from density functional theory to deconvolute how the electrostatic effects and the allosteric changes in receptor geometry individually contribute to cooperativity. Computations, using a continuum solvation model (dichloromethane), show that allostery contributes ∼30% to overall positive cooperativity. The calculated trend of electrostatic cooperativity using pairs of spherical ions (NaCl > NaBr > NaI) correlates to experimental observations (NaI > NaClO4). We show that intrinsic ionic size, which dictates charge separation distance in contact ion pairs, controls electrostatic cooperativity. This finding supports the design principle that semiflexible receptors can facilitate optimal electrostatic cooperativity. While Coulomb's law predicts the size-dependent trend, it overestimates electrostatic cooperativity; we suggest that binding of the individual anion and cation to their respective binding sites dilutes their effective charge. This comprehensive understanding is critical for rational designs of ion-pair receptors for the manipulation of salts.

The first highly diastereo- and enantioselective additions of a halogen and phosphoramidic acid to unactivated alkenes have been developed, catalyzed by a chiral Brønsted acid. A unique feature of these additions is the opportunity for stereocontrol at two noncontiguous chiral centers, carbon and phosphorus, leading to cyclic P-chiral phosphoramidates. In addition to their inherent value, the phosphoramidates are precursors to enantioenriched epoxy allylamines.

We describe synthesis and characterization of a derivative of aza-m-xylylene, diradical 2, that is persistent in solution at room temperature with the half-life measured in minutes (∼80-250 s) and in which the triplet ground state is below the lowest singlet state by >10 kcal mol(-1). The triplet ground states and ΔEST of 2 in glassy solvent matrix are determined by a new approach based on statistical analyses of their EPR spectra. Characterization and analysis of the analogous diradical 1 are carried out for comparison. Statistical analyses of their EPR spectra reliably provide improved lower bounds for ΔEST (from >0.4 to >0.6 kcal mol(-1)) and are compatible with a wide range of relative contents of diradical vs monoradical, including samples in which the diradical and monoradical are minor and major components, respectively. This demonstrates a new powerful method for the determination of the triplet ground states and ΔEST applicable to moderately pure diradicals in matrices.

Deprotonation of the parent titanium imido ((tBu)nacnac)Ti≡NH(Ntolyl2) ((tBu)nacnac(-) = [ArNC(t)Bu]2CH; Ar = 2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3) with KCH2Ph forms a rare example of a molecular titanium nitride as a dimer, {[K][((tBu)nacnac)Ti≡N(Ntolyl2)]}2. From the parent imido or nitride salt, the corresponding aluminylimido-etherate adduct, ((tBu)nacnac)Ti≡N[AlMe2(OEt2)](Ntolyl2), can be isolated and structurally characterized. The parent imido is also a source for the related borylimido, ((tBu)nacnac)Ti═NBEt2(Ntolyl2).

Aminyl tetraradicals with planar tetraazanonacene backbones have quintet (S = 2) ground states and do not show any detectable thermal population of the low-spin excited states up to the highest temperature investigated (100 K) in the 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) matrix. This indicates that the nearest electronic excited state (triplet) is at least ~0.3 kcal mol(-1) higher in energy, that is, the triplet-quintet energy gap, ΔE(TQ) > 0.3 kcal mol(-1), which is consistent with the broken-symmetry-DFT-computed ΔE(TQ) of about 5 kcal mol(-1). In concentrated (ca. 1-10 mM) solutions of tetraradical 4 in 2-MeTHF at 133 K, a fraction of tetraradicals form a dimer (association constant, K(assoc) ≈ 60 M(-1)), with a weak, antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, J/k ≈ -0.1 K ~ 0.2 cal mol(-1), between the S = 2 tetraradicals. This weak intradimer exchange coupling is expected for two tetraradicals at the distance of about 6 Å. The most sterically shielded tetraradical 5 in 2-MeTHF has a half-life of 1 h at room temperature; the product of its decay is the corresponding tetraamine, suggesting that the hydrogen atom abstraction from the solvent is primarily responsible for the decomposition of the tetraradical.

Reaction of 2 equiv of 1,2-bis((diphenylphosphino)ethynyl)benzene (dppeb, 1) with Pt(cod)Cl2 followed by treatment with N2H4 yields the reduced Pt(0) metalloenediyne, Pt(dppeb)2, 2. This complex is stable to both air oxidation and metal-mediated Bergman cyclization under ambient conditions due to the nearly idealized tetrahedral geometry. Reaction of 2 with 1 equiv of I2 in the presence of excess 1,4-cyclohexadiene (1,4-CHD) radical trap rapidly and near-quantitatively generates the cis-Bergman-cyclized, diiodo product 3 ((31)P: δ = 41 ppm, J(Pt-P) = 3346 Hz) with concomitant loss of 1 equiv of uncyclized phosphine chelate ((31)P: δ = -33 ppm). In contrast, addition of 2 equiv of I2 in the absence of additional radical trap instantaneously forms a metastable Pt(dppeb)2(2+) intermediate species, 4, that is characterized by δ = 51 ppm in the (31)P NMR (J(Pt-P) = 3171 Hz) and ν(C≡C) = 2169 cm(-1) in the Raman profile, indicating that it is an uncyclized, bis-ligated complex. Over 24 h, 4 undergoes ligand exchange to form a neutral, square planar complex that spontaneously Bergman cyclizes at ambient temperature to give the crystalline product Pt(dppnap-I2)I2 (dppnap-I2 = (1,4-diiodonaphthalene-2,3-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphine)), 5, in 52% isolated yield. Computational analysis of the oxidation reaction proposes two plausible flattened tetrahedral structures for intermediate 4: one where the phosphine core has migrated to a trans-spanning chelate geometry, and a second, higher energy structure (3.3 kcal/mol) with two cis-chelating phosphine ligands (41° dihedral angle) via a restricted alkyne-terminal starting point. While the energies are disparate, the common theme in both structures is the elongated Pt-P bond lengths (>2.4 Å), indicating that nucleophilic ligand substitution by I(-) is on the reaction trajectory to the cyclized product 5. The efficiency of the redox-mediated Bergman cyclization reaction of this stable Pt(0) metalloenediyne prodrug and resulting cisplatin-like byproduct represents an intriguing new strategy for potential dual-threat metalloenediyne therapeutics.

The anilide-methyl complex (PNP)Sc(NH[DIPP])(CH(3)) (1) [PNP(-) = bis(2-diisopropylphosphino-4-tolyl)amide, DIPP = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl] eliminates methane (k(avg) = 5.13 × 10(-4) M(-1) s(-1) at 50 °C) in the presence of pyridine to generate the transient scandium imido (PNP)Sc═N[DIPP](NC(5)H(5)) (A-py), which rapidly activates the C-H bond of pyridine in 1,2-addition fashion to form the stable pyridyl complex (PNP)Sc(NH[DIPP])(η(2)-NC(5)H(4)) (2). Mechanistic studies suggest the C-H activation process to be second order overall: first order in scandium and first order in substrate (pyridine). Pyridine binding precedes elimination of methane, and α-hydrogen abstraction is overall-rate-determining [the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) for 1-d(1) conversion to 2 was 5.37(6) at 35 °C and 4.9(14) at 50 °C] with activation parameters ΔH(‡) = 17.9(9) kcal/mol and ΔS(‡) = -18(3) cal/(mol K), consistent with an associative-type mechanism. No KIE or exchange with the anilide proton was observed when 1-d(3) was treated with pyridine or thermolyzed at 35 or 50 °C. The post-rate-determining step, C-H bond activation of pyridine, revealed a primary KIE of 1.1(2) at 35 °C for the intermolecular C-H activation reaction in pyridine versus pyridine-d(5). Complex 2 equilibrated back to the imide A-py slowly, as the isotopomer (PNP)Sc(ND[DIPP])(η(2)-NC(5)H(4)) (2-d(1)) converted to (PNP)Sc(NH[DIPP])(η(2)-NC(5)H(3)D) over 9 days at 60 °C. Molecular orbital analysis of A-py suggested that this species possesses a fairly linear scandium imido motif (169.7°) with a very short Sc-N distance of 1.84 Å. Substituted pyridines can also be activated, with the rates of C-H activation depending on both the steric and electronic properties of the substrate.

The air stable complex [(PNP)FeCl(2)] (1) (PNP = N[2-P(CHMe(2))(2)-4-methylphenyl](2)(-)), prepared from one-electron oxidation of [(PNP)FeCl] with ClCPh(3), displays an unexpected S = 3/2 to S = 5/2 transition above 80 K as inferred by the dc SQUID magnetic susceptibility measurement. The ac SQUID magnetization data, at zero field and between frequencies 10 and 1042 Hz, clearly reveal complex 1 to have frequency dependence on the out-of-phase signal and thus being a single molecular magnet with a thermally activated barrier of U(eff) = 32-36 cm(-1) (47-52 K). Variable-temperature Mössbauer data also corroborate a significant temperature dependence in δ and ΔE(Q) values for 1, which is in agreement with the system undergoing a change in spin state. Likewise, variable-temperature X-band EPR spectra of 1 reveals the S = 3/2 to be likely the ground state with the S = 5/2 being close in energy. Multiedge XAS absorption spectra suggest the electronic structure of 1 to be highly covalent with an effective iron oxidation state that is more reduced than the typical ferric complexes due to the significant interaction of the phosphine groups in PNP and Cl ligands with iron. A variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction study of 1 collected between 30 and 300 K also reveals elongation of the Fe-P bond lengths and increment in the Cl-Fe-Cl angle as the S = 5/2 state is populated. Theoretical studies show overall similar orbital pictures except for the d(z(2)) orbital, which has the most sensitivity to change in the geometry and bonding, where the quartet ((4)B) and the sextet ((6)A) states are close in energy.

The transient titanium alkylidyne, (PNP)Ti≡C(t)Bu (PNP = N[2-P(i)Pr(2)-4-methylphenyl](2)(-)), activates a C-H bond of ethane at room temperature, and a β-hydrogen of the resulting ethyl ligand is subsequently transferred to the adjacent alkylidene ligand to form an ethylene adduct of titanium. Treatment of the ethylene complex with two-electron oxidants such as organic azides results in extrusion of ethene concomitant with formation of a mononuclear titanium imido complex.

All attempts to synthesize (PNP)Ni(OTf) form instead ((t)Bu(2)PCH(2)SiMe(2)NSiMe(2)OTf)Ni(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2)). Abstraction of F(-) from (PNP)NiF by even a catalytic amount of BF(3) causes rearrangement of the (transient) (PNP)Ni(+) to analogous ring-opened [((t)Bu(2)PCH(2)SiMe(2)NSiMe(2)F)]Ni(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2)). Abstraction of Cl(-) from (PNP)NiCl with NaB(C(6)H(3)(CF(3))(2))(4) in CH(2)Cl(2) or C(6)H(5)F gives (PNP)NiB(C(6)H(3)(CF(3))(2))(4), the key intermediate in these reactions is (PNP)Ni(+), [(PNP)Ni](+), in which one Si-C bond (together with N and two P) donates to Ni. This makes this Si-C bond subject to nucleophilic attack by F(-), triflate, and alkoxide/ether (from THF). This σ(Si-C) complex binds CO in the time of mixing and also binds chloride, both at nickel. Evidence is offered of a "self-healing" process, where the broken Si-C bond can be reformed in an equilibrium process. (PNP)Ni(+) reacts rapidly with H(2) to give (PN(H)P)NiH(+), which can be deprotonated to form (PNP)NiH. A variety of nucleophilic attacks (and THF polymerization) on the coordinated Si-C bond are envisioned to occur perpendicular to the Si-C bond, based on the character of the LUMO of (PNP)Ni(+).

Metal-templated [2 + 3]-type cocondensation of a pi-extended boronic acid and nioxime furnished a series of cage molecules, which were electropolymerized to prepare metal-containing conducting polymers (MCPs). Despite sharing essentially isostructural organic scaffolds, these materials display metal-dependent electrochemical properties as evidenced by different redox windows observed for M = Co, Fe, Ru. Consecutive electropolymerization using two different monomers furnished bilayer MCPs having different metals in each layer. In addition to functioning as heavy atom markers in cross-sectional analysis by FIB and EDX, redox-active metal centers participate in voltage-dependent interlayer electron transport to give rise to cyclic voltammograms that are distinctively different from those of each layer alone or random copolymers. A simple electrochemical technique can thus be used as a straightforward diagnostic tool to investigate the structural ordering of electrically conductive layered materials.

The first phosphinidene complexes of scandium are reported in this contribution. When complex (PNP)Sc(CH(3))Br (1) is treated with 1 equiv of LiPH[Trip] (Trip = 2,4,6-(i)Pr(3)C(6)H(2)), the dinuclear scandium phosphinidene complex [(PNP)Sc(mu(2)-P[Trip])](2) (2) is obtained. However, treating 1 with a bulkier primary phosphide produces the mononuclear scandium ate complex [(PNP)Sc(mu(2)-P[DMP])(mu(2)-Br)Li] (3) (DMP = 2,6-Mes(2)C(6)H(3)). The Li cation in 3 can be partially encapsulated with DME to furnish a phosphinidene salt derivative, (PNP)Sc(mu(2)-P[DMP])(mu(2)-Br)Li(DME)] (4). We also demonstrate that complex 3 can readily deliver the phosphinidene ligand to organic substrates such as OCPh(2) and Cl(2)PMes* as well as inorganic fragments such as Cp(2)ZrCl(2), Cp*(2)TiCl(2), and Cp(2)TiCl(2) in the presence of P(CH(3))(3). Complexes 2-4 have been fully characterized, including single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies.

Two neutral and four-coordinate vanadium(V)-nitrido complexes have been prepared via the thermolysis of metastable vanadium(III)-azido precursors. All complexes have been fully characterized by multinuclear NMR, FT-IR, isotopic labeling, and, in most instances, single crystal X-ray diffraction. On the basis of activation parameters, N(2) extrusion to form the V[triple bond]N moiety is proposed to occur via an ordered and early transition state having three- or four-triazametallacycle frameworks. In addition, we demonstrate the nitrido ligand to undergo incomplete N-atom transfer to CO and CN{2,6-Me(2)-C(6)H(3)) to form the bent V-N=C=X (X = O, N{2,6-Me(2)-C(6)H(3)}) ligands with concomitant 2e(-) reduction at the vanadium center.

An efficient 2 + 2 cyclocondensation with dihydroxysilane converted simple arylboronic acids to bifunctional borasiloxane cage molecules, which were subsequently electropolymerized to furnish air-stable thin films. The extended [p,pi]-conjugation that defines the rigid backbone of this new conjugated polymer (CP) motif gives rise to longer-wavelength UV-vis transitions upon oxidative doping, the spectral window and intensity of which can be modified by interaction with Lewis basic reagents. Notably, this boron-containing CP undergoes a rapid and reversible color change from green to orange upon exposure to volatile amine samples under ambient conditions. This direct naked-eye detection scheme can best be explained by invoking the reversible B-N dative bond formation that profoundly influences the p-pi* orbital overlap.

The reduction of a redox-active ligand is shown to drive reversible switching of a Cu(I) [2]pseudorotaxane ([2]PR(+)) into the reduced [3]pseudorotaxane ([3]PR(+)) by a bimolecular mechanism. The unreduced pseudorotaxanes [2]PR(+) and [3]PR(2+) are initially self-assembled from the binucleating ligand, 3,6-bis(5-methyl-2-pyridine)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (Me(2)BPTZ), and a preformed copper-macrocycle moiety (Cu-M(+)) based on 1,10-phenanthroline. X-ray crystallography revealed a syn geometry of the [3]PR(2+). The UV-vis-NIR spectra show low-energy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions that red shift from 808 nm for [2]PR(+) to 1088 nm for [3]PR(2+). Quantitative analysis of the UV-vis-NIR titration shows the stepwise formation constants to be K(1) = 8.9 x 10(8) M(-1) and K(2) = 3.1 x 10(6) M(-1), indicative of negative cooperativity. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and coulometry of Me(2)BPTZ, [2]PR(+), and [3]PR(2+) shows the one-electron reductions at E(1/2) = -0.96, -0.65, and -0.285 V, respectively, to be stabilized in a stepwise manner by each Cu(+) ion. CVs of [2]PR(+) show changes with scan rate consistent with an EC mechanism of supramolecular disproportionation after reduction: [2]PR(0) + [2]PR(+) = [3]PR(+) + Me(2)BPTZ(0) (K(D)*, k(d)). UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry was used to confirm the 1:1 product stoichiometry for [3]PR(+):Me(2)BPTZ. The driving force (DeltaG(D)* = -5.1 kcal mol(-1)) for the reaction is based on the enhanced stability of the reduced [3]PR(+) over reduced [2]PR(0) by 365 mV (8.4 kcal mol(-1)). Digital simulations of the CVs are consistent with a bimolecular pathway (k(d) = 12 000 s(-1) M(-1)). Confirmation of the mechanism provides a basis to extend this new switching modality to molecular machines.

Triazolophanes that incorporate pyridyl subunits in place of phenylenes show a heightened propensity to form 2:1 sandwich complexes with halides. Persistent iodide-based sandwiches are observed. Binding constants confirm that the inward-facing electron pairs on the pyridyls destabilize the 1:1 complexes with halides. The (1)H NMR spectra verify that the sandwich complexes have two pi-stacked triazolophanes rotated to allow registration between opposite dipoles on the pyridyls (directed inward) and triazoles (directed outward). These dipolar interactions cooperate to lower the pyridyl-based repulsions, therefore, increasing K(2). Modest cooperative effects are observed for the snugly fitting F(-), Cl(-), and Br(-) halides while the too-large I(-) shows highly positive cooperativity.

A series of three-coordinate Cr(II) complexes sharing the common molecular fragment "(nacnac)Cr" (nacnac(-) = [ArNC((t)Bu)](2)CH, Ar = 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)) were prepared via salt metathesis with the dimer [(nacnac)Cr(mu-Cl)](2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the complexes (nacnac)Cr(L) (L = CH(2)(t)Bu, CH(3), CH(2)CH(3), SiH{2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2)}(2), O{2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)}, N{CH(3)}(2)) represent a rare class of mononuclear, neutral chromium complexes with a three-coordinate high-spin chromous metal center. Depending on the nature of the third ligand, L(-), these complexes can adopt either distorted T-shaped or Y-shaped coordination geometries. Density functional theory calculations and molecular orbital analyses in combination with a detailed molecular fragment energy decomposition were used to establish an intuitive concept of the key electronic structure patterns that determine the coordination geometry of preference. The frontier orbitals of the (nacnac)Cr(II) fragment direct pi-donating ligands to adopt Y-shaped geometry, whereas ligands that are primarily sigma-donors prefer T-shaped coordination. The relationship between electronics at the metal center and coordination geometry was extended to include the putative neutral three-coordinate high-spin complexes of Sc(II) and Mn(II), which are predicted to both adopt Y-shaped geometry.

Irradiation of 2-diazo-3-oxochlorins (200 W, lambda > or = 345 nm, 10 degrees C) in the presence of nucleophilic and biomimetic substrates 1-butanol, tosylhydrazine, or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol generates Wolff-rearranged, pyrrole ring-contracted azeteoporphyrinoids in 11-34% yield, with the corresponding hydroxyporphyrins in up to 55% yield. For metalated diazo-oxochlorins, these products compete with intramolecular exocyclic ring formation by meso-phenyl ring addition, which occurs in up to 76% yield in the absence of substrate. The dependence of product distribution on substrate is established by photolysis in neat dichlorometane. Under these conditions, formation of the Wolff-rearranged product is inhibited and the phenyl addition product dominates (76%) due to the absence of a good nucleophile. A conceptually analogous dependence is also observed for the free-base derivative, with the exocyclic ring-containing dimerization product isolated in 42% yield. The third reaction pathway, formation of the hydroxyporphyrin, is enhanced by the presence of non-nucleophilic, oxidizable substrates such as 1,4-cyclohexadiene (M = Cu; 55%); however, in the presence of the bulky and oxidatively more stable tert-butyl alcohol, intramolecular exocyclic ring-quenching is observed in 51% yield with no detection of the hydroxyporphyrin. X-ray structure characterization of the azeteoporphyrinoids reveals a planar macrocycle, illustrating the strong influence of periphery contraction. Specifically, the copper-containing azeteoporphyrinoids show remarkably short Cu-N(azete) distances of 1.88-1.90 A. All porphyrinoid photoproducts possess intense absorption bands throughout the visible spectral region, indicating that ring-contracted substrate adducts, as well as phenyl ring addition products, maintain porphyrinoid aromaticity. Overall, the ability of these chromophores to photochemically react under substrate control may make unimolecular porphyrinoid photoreagents such as these useful for applications in photobiology or O2-independent photodynamic therapy.

Reaction of PNPCo, where PNP is (tBu2PCH2SiMe2)2N-, with the persistent radical galvinoxyl, G, gives PNPCoIIG, a nonplanar S = 3/2 species. Reaction with PhCH2Cl or with 0.5 mol I2 gives PNPCoX (X = Cl or I, respectively), but additional I2, seeking CoIII, gives instead oxidation at phosphorus: (tBu2P(I)CH2SiMe2NSiMe2CH2PtBu2)CoI2. Hydrogen-atom transfer reagents fail to give PNPCoH, but H2 gives instead PNPCo(H)2, a result rationalized thermodynamically based on DFT calculations. Multiple equiv of PhSiH3 give a product of Co(V), where N/SiPh and P/Si bonds have formed. N2CH(SiMe3) gives a 1:1 adduct of PNPCo, whose metric parameters suggest partial oxidation above CoI; N2CHPh gives a 1:1 adduct but with very different spectroscopic features. PhN3 reacts fast, via several intermediates detected below 0 degrees C, to finally release N2 and form a CoI product where one phosphorus has been oxidized, PN(P=NPh)Co. Whereas PNPCo(N3) resists loss of N2 on heating, one electron oxidation gives a rapid loss of N2, and the remaining nitride nitrogen is quickly incorporated into the chelate ligand, giving [tBu2PCH2SiMe2NSiMe2NP(tBu2)=CH2Co]. O2 or PhI=O generally gives products where one or both phosphorus centers are converted to its oxide, bonded to cobalt.

Nitroxide diradicals, in which nitroxides are annelated to m-phenylene forming tricyclic benzobisoxazine-like structures, have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, magnetic resonance (EPR and 1H NMR) spectroscopy, as well as magnetic studies in solution and in solid state. For the octamethyl derivative of benzobisoxazine nitroxide diradical, the conformationally constrained nitroxide moieties are coplanar with the m-phenylene, leading to large values of 2J (2J/k > 200 K in solution and 2J/k >> 300 K in the solid state). For the diradical, in which all ortho and para positions of the m-phenylene are sterically shielded, distortion of the nitroxide moieties from coplanarity is moderate, such that the singlet-triplet gaps remain large in both solution (2J/k > 200 K) and the solid state (2J/k approximately 400-800 K), though an onset of thermal depopulation of the triplet ground state is detectable near room temperature. These diradicals have robust triplet ground states with strong ferromagnetic coupling and good stability at ambient conditions. Magnetic behavior of the nitroxide diradicals at low temperature is best fit to the model of one-dimensional S = 1 Heisenberg chains with intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling. The antiferromagnetic coupling between the S = 1 diradicals may be associated with the methyl nitroxide C-H- - -O contacts, including nonclassical hydrogen bonds. These unprecedented organic S = 1 antiferromagnetic chains are highly isotropic, compared to those of the extensively studied Ni(II)-based chains.

Operationally unsaturated (i.e., 16/18-electron) (PNPR)Re(H)4, where PNPR is N(SiMe2CH2PR2)2, is reactive at 22 degrees C with cyclic olefins. The first observed products are generally (PNPR)Re(H)2(cycloalkylidene), with hydrogenated olefin as the product of hydrogen abstraction from the tetrahydride. The tetrahydride complex with R = tBu generally fails to react (too bulky), that with R = cyclohexyl suffers a (controllable) tendency to abstraction of 3H from one ring, forming an eta3-cyclohexenyl compound, and that with R = iPr generally gives the richest bimolecular reactivity. The cyclic monoolefins studied show distinct reactivity, C6 giving first the carbene and then coordinated cyclohexadiene, C5 giving carbene, then diene, and then eta5-C5H5, C8 giving carbene and then eta2-cyclooctyne, and C12 giving an eta3-allyl. Norbornene gives a pi-complex of the norbornene in thermal equilibrium with its carbene isomer; at 90 degrees C, hydrocarbon ligand Calpha-Cbeta bond cleavage occurs to give, for the first time, a carbyne complex from an internal olefin. Two compounds synthesized here have the formal composition "(PNPR)Re + olefin", and each of these is capable of dehydrogenating the methyl group of a variety of alkanes at 110 degrees C to form (PNP)ReH triple bond (CR).

Nature routinely uses cooperative interactions to regulate cellular activity. For years, chemists have designed synthetic systems that aim toward harnessing the reactivity common to natural biological systems. By learning how to control these interactions in situ, one begins to allow for the preparation of man-made biomimetic systems that can efficiently mimic the interactions found in Nature. To this end, we have designed a synthetic protocol for the preparation of flexible metal-directed supramolecular cofacial porphyrin complexes which are readily obtained in greater than 90% yield through the use of new hemilabile porphyrin ligands with bifunctional ether-phosphine or thioether-phosphine substituents at the 5 and 15 positions on the porphyrin ring. The resulting architectures contain two hemilabile ligand-metal domains (RhI or CuI sites) and two cofacially aligned porphyrins (ZnII sites), offering orthogonal functionalities and allowing these multimetallic complexes to exist in two states, "condensed" or "open". Combining the ether-phosphine ligand with the appropriate RhI or CuI transition-metal precursors results in "open" macrocyclic products. In contrast, reacting the thioether-phosphine ligand with RhI or CuI precursors yields condensed structures that can be converted into their "open" macrocyclic forms via introduction of additional ancillary ligands. The change in cavity size that occurs allows these structures to function as allosteric catalysts for the acyl transfer reaction between X-pyridylcarbinol (where X = 2, 3, or 4) and 1-acetylimidazole. For 3- and 4-pyridylcarbinol, the "open" macrocycle accelerates the acyl transfer reaction more than the condensed analogue and significantly more than the porphyrin monomer. In contrast, an allosteric effect was not observed for 2-pyridylcarbinol, which is expected to be a weaker binder and is unfavorably constrained inside the macrocyclic cavity.

Calix[4]arenes constrained to the 1,3-alternate conformation and functionalized at the upper rim with four and two tert-butylnitroxides have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, magnetic resonance (EPR and (1)H NMR) spectroscopy, and magnetic studies. The 1,3-alternate nitroxide tetraradical and diradical provide unique polyradical scaffolds for dissection of the through-bond and through-space intramolecular exchange couplings. In addition, detailed magnetic studies of the previously reported calix[4]arene nitroxide tetraradical, which possesses cone conformation in solution, reveal conformational dependence of exchange coupling. Through-bond coupling between the adjacent nitroxide radicals is mediated by the nitroxide-m-phenylene-CH(2)-m-phenylene-nitroxide coupling pathway, and through-space coupling is found between the diagonal nitroxide radicals at the conformationally constrained N...N distance of 5-6 A. Magnetic studies of the calix[4]arene polyradical scaffolds in frozen solutions show that the through-bond exchange coupling in the 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene tetraradical is antiferromagnetic, while that in cone calix[4]arene tetraradical is ferromagnetic. The through-space exchange couplings are antiferromagnetic in both cone and 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene tetraradical, as well as in the 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene diradical. The exchange coupling constants (|J/k|) are of the order of 1 K.
