Mineral-based bulk structural materials (MBSMs) are known for their long history and extensive range of usage. The inherent brittleness of minerals poses a major problem to the performance of MBSMs. To overcome this problem, design principles have been extracted from natural biominerals, in which the extraordinary mechanical performance is achieved via the hierarchical organization of minerals and organics. Nevertheless, precise and efficient fabrication of MBSMs with bioinspired hierarchical structures under mild conditions has long been a big challenge. This Perspective provides a panoramic view of an emerging fabrication strategy, matrix-directed mineralization, which imitates the in vivo growth of some biominerals. The advantages of the strategy are revealed by comparatively analyzing the conventional fabrication techniques of artificial hierarchically structured MBSMs and the biomineral growth processes. By introducing recent advances, we demonstrate that this strategy can be used to fabricate artificial MBSMs with hierarchical structures. Particular attention is paid to the mass transport and the precursors that are involved in the mineralization process. We hope this Perspective can provide some inspiring viewpoints on the importance of biomimetic mineralization in material fabrication and thereby spur the biomimetic fabrication of high-performance MBSMs.

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis in neutral-pH electrolytes can not only avoid the corrosion and safety issues and expand the catalyst option but also potentially integrate with artificial photosynthesis and bioelectrocatalysis. However, heterogeneous catalysts that can efficiently negotiate the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in neutral solutions are considerably lacking. Herein, we report a template-assisted strategy for the synthesis of 13 kinds of tube-like nanostructured perovskite oxides (TNPOs) with markedly high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas. By systematic examination of these TNPOs, we found that the OER activity of TNPOs in neutral solution exhibits a volcano shape as a function of the covalency of transition metal-oxygen bonds. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), featuring high atom utilization, have captured widespread interests in diverse applications. However, the single-atom sites in SACs are generally recognized as independent units and the interplay of adjacent sites is largely overlooked. Herein, by the direct pyrolysis of MOFs assembled with Fe and Ni-doped ZnO nanoparticles, a novel Fe1-Ni1-N-C catalyst, with neighboring Fe and Ni single-atom pairs decorated on nitrogen-doped carbon support, has been precisely constructed. Thanks to the synergism of neighboring Fe and Ni single-atom pairs, Fe1-Ni1-N-C presents significantly boosted performances for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2, far surpassing Fe1-N-C and Ni1-N-C with separate Fe or Ni single atoms. Additionally, the Fe1-Ni1-N-C also exhibits superior performance with excellent CO selectivity and durability in Zn-CO2 battery. Theoretical simulations reveal that, in Fe1-Ni1-N-C, single Fe atoms can be highly activated by adjacent single-atom Ni via non-bonding interaction, significantly facilitating the formation of COOH* intermediate and thereby accelerating the overall CO2 reduction. This work supplies a general strategy to construct single-atom catalysts containing multiple metal species and reveals the vital importance of the communitive effect between adjacent single atoms toward improved catalysis.

The kinetics of electrode reactions including mass transfer and surface reaction is essential in electrocatalysis, as it strongly determines the apparent reaction rates, especially on nanostructured electrocatalysts. However, important challenges still remain in optimizing the kinetics of given catalysts with suitable constituents, morphology, and crystalline design to maximize the electrocatalytic performances. We propose a comprehensive kinetic model coupling mass transfer and surface reaction on the nanocatalyst-modified electrode surface to explore and shed light on the kinetic optimization in electrocatalysis. Moreover, a theory-guided microchemical engineering (MCE) strategy has been demonstrated to rationally redesign the catalysts with optimized kinetics. Experimental measurements for methanol oxidation reaction in a 3D ordered channel with tunable channel sizes confirm the calculation prediction. Under the optimized channel size, mass transfer and surface reaction in the channeled microreactor are both well regulated. This MCE strategy will bring about a significant leap forward in structured catalyst design and kinetic modulation.

Selective and efficient catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added fuels and feedstocks provides an ideal avenue to high-density renewable energy storage. An impediment to enabling deep CO2 reduction to oxygenates and hydrocarbons (e.g., C2+ compounds) is the difficulty of coupling carbon-carbon bonds efficiently. Copper in the +1 oxidation state has been thought to be active for catalyzing C2+ formation, whereas it is prone to being reduced to Cu0 at cathodic potentials. Here we report that catalysts with nanocavities can confine carbon intermediates formed in situ, which in turn covers the local catalyst surface and thereby stabilizes Cu+ species. Experimental measurements on multihollow cuprous oxide catalyst exhibit a C2+ Faradaic efficiency of 75.2 ± 2.7% at a C2+ partial current density of 267 ± 13 mA cm-2 and a large C2+-to-C1 ratio of ∼7.2. Operando Raman spectra, in conjunction with X-ray absorption studies, confirm that Cu+ species in the as-designed catalyst are well retained during CO2 reduction, which leads to the marked C2+ selectivity at a large conversion rate.

Designing high-efficiency catalyst is at the heart of a transition to future renewable energy systems. Great achievements have been made to optimize thermodynamics to reduce energetic barriers of the catalytic reactions. However, little attention has been paid to design catalysts to improve kinetics to enrich the local concentration of reactant molecules surrounding electrocatalysts. Here, we find that well-designed nanocatalysts with periodic structures can optimize kinetics to accelerate mass-transport from bulk electrolyte to the catalyst surface, leading to the enhanced catalytic performance. This achievement stems from regulation of the surface reactant flux due to the gradient of the microelectric field directing uniformly to the nearest catalyst on ordered pattern, so that all of the reactant molecules are utilized sufficiently for reactions, enabling the boost of the electrocatalytic performance. This novel concept is further confirmed in various catalytic systems and nanoassemblies, such as nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanoflakes.

The design of highly efficient non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for large-scale hydrogen production remains an ongoing challenge. We report here a Ni2P nanoarray catalyst grown on a commercial Ni foam substrate, which demonstrates an outstanding electrocatalytic activity and stability in basic electrolyte. The high catalytic activity can be attributed to the favorable electron transfer, superior intrinsic activity, and the intimate connection between the nanoarrays and their substrate. Moreover, the unique "superaerophobic" surface feature of the Ni2P nanoarrays enables a remarkable capability to withstand internal and external forces and release the in situ generated H2 bubbles in a timely manner at large current densities (such as >1000 mA cm-2) where the hydrogen evolution becomes vigorous. Our results highlight that an aerophobic structure is essential to catalyze gas evolution for large-scale practical applications.

Cubic phase CsPbI3 quantum dots (α-CsPbI3 QDs) as a newly emerging type of semiconducting QDs hold tremendous promise for fundamental research and optoelectronic device applications. However, stable and sub-5 nm-sized α-CsPbI3 QDs have rarely been demonstrated so far due to their highly labile ionic structure and low phase stability. Here, we report a novel strontium-substitution along with iodide passivation strategy to stabilize the cubic phase of CsPbI3, achieving the facile synthesis of α-CsPbI3 QDs with a series of controllable sizes down to sub-5 nm. We demonstrate that the incorporation of strontium ions can significantly increase the formation energies of α-CsPbI3 QDs and hence reduce the structure distortion to stabilize the cubic phase at the few-nanometer size. Axially, epitaxially organizing nano-objects of distinct compositions and structures into superlattice nanowires enables full utilization of sunlight, readily engineered band structures, and tunable geometric parameters to fit carrier transport, thus holding great promise for optoelectronics and solar-to-fuel conversion. To maximize their efficiency, the general and high-precision synthesis of colloidal axial superlattice nanowires (ASLNWs) with programmable compositions and structures is the prerequisite; however, it remains challenging. Here, we report an axial encoding methodology toward the ASLNW library with precise control over their compositions, dimensions, crystal phases, interfaces, and periodicity. Using a predesigned, editable nanoparticle framework that offers the synthetic selectivity, we are able to chemically decouple adjacent sub-objects in ASLNWs and thus craft them in a controlled approach, yielding a library of distinct ASLNWs. We integrate therein plasmonic, metallic, or near-infrared-active chalcogenides, which hold great potential in solar energy conversion. Such synthetic capability enables a performance boost in target applications, as we report order-of-magnitude enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production rates using optimized ASLNWs compared to corresponding solo objects. Furthermore, it is expected that such unique superlattice nanowires could bring out new phenomena.

Ion migration has been recognized as a critical step in determining the performance of numerous devices in chemistry, biology, and material science. However, direct visualization and quantitative investigation of solid-phase ion migration among anisotropic nanostructures have been a challenging task. Here, we report an in-situ ChemTEM method to quantitatively investigate the solid-phase ion migration process among coassembled nanowires (NWs). This complicated process was tracked within a NW and between NWs with an obvious nanogap, which was revealed by both phase field simulation and ab initio modeling theoretical evaluation. A migration "bridge" between neighboring NWs was observed. Furthermore, these new observations could be applied to migration of other metal ions on semiconductor NWs. These findings provide critical insights into the solid-phase ion migration kinetics occurring in nanoscale systems with generality and offer an efficient tool to explore other ion migration processes, which will facilitate fabrication of customized and new heteronanostructures in the future.

Selective and efficient catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO

Inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging, highly attractive light emitters with high color purity and good thermal stability for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Their high photo/electroluminescence efficiencies are very important for fabricating efficient LEDs. Here, we propose a novel strategy to enhance the photo/electroluminescence efficiency of CsPbBr3 NCs through doping of heterovalent Ce3+ ions via a facile hot-injection method. The Ce3+ cation was chosen as the dopant for CsPbBr3 NCs by virtue of its similar ion radius and formation of higher energy level of conduction band with bromine in comparison with the Pb2+ cation to maintain the integrity of perovskite structure without introducing additional trap states. It was found that by increasing the doping amount of Ce3+ in CsPbBr3 NCs to 2.88% (atomic percentage of Ce compared to Pb) the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CsPbBr3 NCs reached up to 89%, a factor of 2 increase in comparison with the native, undoped ones. Electrochromic devices with controllable color switching, low cost, and energy-saving advantages have been widely used as smart windows, rear-view car mirrors, displays, and so on. However, the devices are seriously limited for flexible electronics as they are traditionally fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates which will lose their conductivity after bending cycles (the resistance significantly changed from 200 Ω to 6.56 MΩ when the bending radius was 1.2 cm). Herein, we report a new route for large area coassembly of nanowires (NWs), resulting in the formation of multilayer ordered nanowire (NW) networks with tunable conductivity (7-40 Ω/sq) and transmittance (58-86% at 550 nm) for fabrication of flexible transparent electrochromic devices, showing good stability of electrochromic switching behaviors. The electrochromic performance of the devices can be tuned and is strongly dependent on the structures of the Ag and W18O49 NW assemblies. Unlike the ITO-based electronics, the electrochromic films can be bent to a radius of 1.2 cm for more than 1000 bending cycles without obvious failure of both conductivity (ΔR/R ≈ 8.3%) and electrochromic performance (90% retention), indicating the excellent mechanical flexibility. The present method for large area coassembly of NWs can be extended to fabricate various NW-based flexible devices in the future.

The selectivity control toward aldehyde in the aromatic alcohol oxidation remains a grand challenge using molecular oxygen under mild conditions. In this work, we designed and synthesized Pt/PCN-224(M) composites by integration of Pt nanocrystals and porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), PCN-224(M). The composites exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the photo-oxidation of aromatic alcohols by 1 atm O2 at ambient temperature, based on a synergetic photothermal effect and singlet oxygen production. Additionally, in opposition to the function of the Schottky junction, injection of hot electrons from plasmonic Pt into PCN-224(M) would lower the electron density of the Pt surface, which thus is tailorable for the optimized catalytic performance via the competition between the Schottky junction and the plasmonic effect by altering the light intensity. The tailorable structure and electronic structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly facilitate their modulated light harvesting, redox power, and consequently photocatalysis. Herein, a representative MOF, UiO-66, was furnished by installing Fe3+ onto the Zr-oxo clusters, to give Fe-UiO-66, which features extended visible light harvesting, based on metal-to-cluster charge transfer (MCCT). The Fe-UiO-66 with unique electronic structure and strong oxidizing power exhibits visible light-driven water oxidation, which is impossible for pristine UiO-66. More strikingly, under visible irradiation, the generated holes over Fe-UiO-66 are able to exclusively convert H2O to hydroxide radicals, initiating and driving the activation of stubborn C-H bond, such as toluene oxidation. The electrons reduce O2 to O2•- radicals that further promote the oxidation reaction. The related catalytic mechanism and the structure-activity relationship have been investigated in detail. As far as we know, this is not only an unprecedented report on activating "inert" MOFs for photocatalytic C-H activation but also the first work on extended light harvesting and enhanced photocatalysis for MOFs by introducing an MCCT process.

Hard carbons attract myriad interest as anode materials for high-energy rechargeable batteries due to their low costs and high theoretical capacities; practically, they deliver unsatisfactory performance due to their intrinsically disordered microarchitecture. Here we report a facile ion-catalyzed synthesis of a phenol–formaldehyde resin-based hard-carbon aerogel that takes advantage of the chelation effect of phenol and Fe3+, which consists of a three-dimensionally interconnected carbon network embedded with hydrogen-rich, ordered microstructures of expanded nanographites and carbon micropores. The chelation effect ensures the homodispersion of Fe in the polymer segments of the precursor, so that an effective catalytic conversion from sp3 to sp2 carbon occurs, enabling free rearrangement of graphene sheets into expanded nanographite and carbon micropores. Heterocrystalline polytype nanostructured semiconductors have been attracting more and more attention in recent years due to their novel structures and special interfaces. Up to now, controlled polytypic nanostructures are mostly realized in II-VI and III-V semiconductors. Herein, we report the synthesis and photoelectrochemical properties of Cu-based ternary I-III-VI2 chalcogenide polytypic nanocrystals, with a focus on polytypic CuInS2 (CIS), CuInSe2 (CISe), and CuIn(S0.5Se0.5)2 alloy nanocrystals. Each obtained polytypic nanocrystal is constructed with a wurtzite hexagonal column and a zinc blende/chalcopyrite cusp, regardless of the S/Se ratio. The growth mechanisms of polytypic CIS and CISe nanocrystals have been studied by time-dependent experiments. The polytypic nanocrystals are solution-deposited on indium-tin oxide glass substrate and used as a photoelectrode, thus showing stable photoelectrochemical activity in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation was used to study the electronic structure and the band gap alignment. This versatile synthetic method provides a new route for synthesis of novel polytypic nanostructured semiconductors with unique properties.

It is highly desirable to convert CO2 to valuable fuels or chemicals by means of solar energy, which requires CO2 enrichment around photocatalysts from the atmosphere. Here we demonstrate that a porphyrin-involved metal-organic framework (MOF), PCN-222, can selectively capture and further photoreduce CO2 with high efficiency under visible-light irradiation. Mechanistic information gleaned from ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (combined with time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy) has elucidated the relationship between the photocatalytic activity and the electron-hole separation efficiency. The presence of a deep electron trap state in PCN-222 effectively inhibits the detrimental, radiative electron-hole recombination. As a direct result, PCN-222 significantly enhances photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into formate anion compared to the corresponding porphyrin ligand itself. This work provides important insights into the design of MOF-based materials for CO2 capture and photoreduction.

Improving heteroatomic interactions via alloying or forming heterogeneous catalysts is of importance to the enhancement in terms of electrocatalytic activity and stability. In this work, a simple galvanic replacement reaction was utilized to synthesize low Pt-based quaternary nanotubes (NTs). It is easy to obtain PtPdRuTe NTs with different composition and controlled shape using ultrathin Te nanowires (NWs) as sacrificial templates for its high activity. The NT wall thickness and formed NPs on the surface are closely related with the composition, especially Pd content. The optimized incorporation of Pd atoms into ternary PtRuTe NTs formed a uniform protecting PtPd surface and modified the Pt electronic structure to improve the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a larger extent of electron transfer from neighboring atoms to Pt on PtPdRuTe, consequently leading to a weaker bonding of the intermediate on Pt. As a result, the quaternary PtPdRuTe NTs exhibit enhanced activity and stability toward efficient MOR.

Colloidosomes are usually produced from a series of building blocks with different sizes ranging from several nanometers to micrometers or various shapes, such as particles, microrods, and quantum dots. Colloidosomes can possess a variety of characteristics in terms of photics, electrology, mechanical strength, and selective permeability, derived from their building blocks. However, poor mechanical stability and complicated synthesis processes have limited the applications of colloidosomes. Here, we report a new one-pot colloidal chemistry route to synthesize phenol formaldehyde resin (PFR), Ag@PFR, and Au@PFR colloidosomes with high yields. The method can be modified to synthesize different kinds of doped colloidosomes with different components, which will provide a new approach to design colloidosomes with different functions.

Heteronanostructures have attracted intensive attention due to their electronic coupling effects between distinct components. Despite tremendous advances of nanostructure fabrication, combining independent polymorphs by forming heterojunction is still challenging but fascinating, such as copper sulfides (Cu2–xS), exhibiting varying band gaps and crystal structures with various stoichiometries. Herein, self-coupled Cu2–xS polymorphs (Cu1.94S-CuS) by a facile one-pot chemical transformation route have been reported for the first time. Unprecedentedly, a manganous precursor plays a crucial role in inducing and directing the formation of such a dumbbell-like architecture, which combines 1D Cu1.94S with 2D CuS. We report a solution-based synthesis of monodispersed Cu(2)CdSnSe(4) nanocrystals and a study on the thermoelectric properties of these wide-band-gap dense materials compacted from nanocrystals for the first time. With the help of copper dopants and selenium vacancies generated during wet-chemistry synthesis, a large increment in the power factor is observed, and the dimensionless figure-of-merit ZT reaches a peak value of 0.65 at 450 °C.

Well-defined periodic mesostructures of hydrophilic ultrathin Te nanowires with aspect ratios of at least 10(4) can be produced by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique without any extra hydrophobic pretreatment or functionalization. Packing the arrayed nanowire monolayers will allow construction of nanomesh-like mesostructures or more complex multilayered structures composed of ultrathin nanowires on a planar substrate. The well-organized monolayer of Te nanowires with periodic mesostructures can be readily used as a stamp to transfer such mesostructured nanopatterns to other substrates or can be embedded within a polymer matrix. The mesostructures of ultrathin Te nanowire films show reversibly switched photoelectric properties between the lower- and higher-conductivity states when the light is off and on, and the photocurrent is influenced by the light intensity and the number of mesostructured nanowire monolayer films. This method can be extended for fabrication of other mesostructured assemblies of ultrathin nanowires or nanotubes.

This article reports a novel scalable method to prepare ultrathin and uniform Pd@Pt nanowires (NWs) with controllable composition and shell thickness, high aspect ratio, and smooth surface, triggered by bromide ions via a galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl6(2-) and Pd NWs. It was found that bromide ions played a vital role in initiating and promoting the galvanic reaction. The bromide ions served as capping and oxidized etching agents, counterbalancing the Pt deposition and Pd etching on the surface to give final Pd@Pt core-shell nanostructures. Such a counterbalance and the formation PtBr6(2-) with lower redox potential could lower the reaction rate and be responsible for full coverage of a smooth Pt shell. The full coverage of Pt deposited on Pd NWs is important for the enhancement of the activity and stability, which depend strongly on the Pt content and Pt shell thickness. Significantly, the Pd@Pt NWs with Pt content of 21.2% (atomic ratio) exhibited the highest mass activity (810 mA mg(-1)(Pt)) and specific activity (0.4 mA cm(-2)). Interestingly, the mass activity (1560 mA mg(-1)(Pt)) and specific activity (0.98 mA cm(-2)) of Pd@Pt (21.2%) NWs increased to 2.45 and 1.95 times the initial values after 60k cycles tests, 8.5 and 9.0 times greater than those of Pt/C catalysts. In addition, these ultrathin NW electrocatalysts with large aspect ratio are easy to form into a freestanding film, which improves the mass transport, electrical conductivity, and structure stability.

From the standpoint of chemistry, the metastable nature of nanocrystals provides us plentiful ground for the research of new nanoscale structural transformations. Herein, we report a new phenomenon that trialkylphosphine (TAP) can extract the Ag(+) and Bi(3+) from their nanostructural chalcogenides and reduce them to the zerovalent state. Based on this principle, a trialkylphosphine-driven chemical transformation route has been developed for the synthesis of a series of metals and metal-sulfide heterostructures with multiple sulfides as the precursors. Using this reaction principle, Ag, Bi, Ag-Ni3S2, Ag-ZnS, Ag-AgInS2, Ag-Bi, and Bi-Cu7S4 nanostructures can be successively synthesized. These Ag- or Bi-based metal chalcogenide heteronanostructures with interesting optical properties or multifunctionalities could be of special interest for a variety of applications, including high-performance catalysis, biological and biomedical sensing, photovoltaic devices, and a new generation of optoelectronic devices.

The moisture sensitivity of many metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) poses a critical issue for their large-scale real application. One of the most effective methods to solve this problem is to convert the surface of MOFs from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Herein, we develop a general strategy to modify hydrophobic polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) on the surface of MOF materials to significantly enhance their moisture or water resistance by a facile vapor deposition technique. MOF-5, HKUST-1, and ZnBT as representative vulnerable MOFs were successfully coated by PDMS, and these coated samples well inherited their original crystalline nature and pore characteristics. Strikingly, the surface areas of these MOFs were nearly 100% retained upon PDMS-coating. Such a coating process might render MOFs applicable in the presence of water or humidity in extended fields such as gas sorption and catalysis.

A nanowire-directed templating synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofibers has been demonstrated, where ultrathin tellurium nanowires (TeNWs) with excellent dispersivity can act as templates for directed growth and assembly of ZIF-8 nanocrystals (one typical MOF), resulting in the formation of uniform ZIF-8 nanofibers. The as-obtained ZIF-8 nanofibers can be conveniently converted into highly porous doped carbon nanofibers by calcination. Compared with bulk porous carbon by direct carbonization of MOF crystals, these doped carbon nanofibers exhibit complex network structure, hierarchical pores, and high surface area. Further doped by phosphorus species, the co-doped carbon nanofibers exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction, even better than the benchmark Pt/C catalyst.

Unique ultrathin CoSe(2)-DETA (protonated) mesostructured nanobelts with multiple stacked layers which are highly parallel to the axial direction have been first prepared in a binary solution composed of organic amine and water under mild solvothermal conditions.
