Recently, moiré superlattices of twisted van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted substantial interest due to their strongly correlated properties. However, the vdW interlayer interaction is intrinsically weak, such that many desired properties can only exist at low temperature. Here, we theoretically predict some unusual properties stemming from the chemical bonding between twisted PbS nanosheets as an example of non-vdW moiré superlattices. The strong interlayer coupling in such systems results in giant strain vortices and dipole vortices at the interface. The modified electronic structures become a series of dispersionless bands and artificial-atom states. In real space, these states are analogous to arrays of well-positioned quantum dots, which may be promising for use in single-electron devices. In theory, if the materials are doped with a low concentration of electrons, a Wigner crystal will form even without any magnetic field. To confirm the accessibility and stability of non-vdW moiré superlattices in experiment, we synthesized PbS moiré superlattices with different twist angles. Our transmission-electron-microscope observations reveal the resemblance of the small-angle-twisted structures with the square matrices of quantum dots, which is in good accordance with our calculations.

Substantial advances in enantioconvergent C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation reactions have been made in recent years through the use of transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of racemic secondary alkyl electrophiles with organometallic reagents. Herein, we report a general process for the asymmetric construction of alkyl-alkyl bonds adjacent to heteroatoms, namely, a nickel-catalyzed enantioconvergent reductive hydroalkylation of olefins with α-heteroatom phosphorus or sulfur alkyl electrophiles. Including the use of readily available olefins, this reaction has considerable advantages, such as mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility, making it a desirable alternative to traditional electrophile-nucleophile cross-coupling reactions.

We introduce a general surface passivation mechanism for cesium lead halide perovskite materials (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) that is supported by a combined experimental and theoretical study of the nanocrystal surface chemistry. A variety of spectroscopic methods are employed together with ab initio calculations to identify surface halide vacancies as the predominant source of charge trapping. The number of surface traps per nanocrystal is quantified by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and that number is consistent with a simple trapping model in which surface halide vacancies create deleterious under-coordinated lead atoms. These halide vacancies exhibit trapping behavior that differs among CsPbCl3, CsPbBr3, and CsPbI3. Ab initio calculations suggest that introduction of anionic X-type ligands can produce trap-free band gaps by altering the energetics of lead-based defect levels. General rules for selecting effective passivating ligand pairs are introduced by considering established principles of coordination chemistry. Introducing softer, anionic, X-type Lewis bases that target under-coordinated lead atoms results in absolute quantum yields approaching unity and monoexponential luminescence decay kinetics, thereby indicating full trap passivation. This work provides a systematic framework for preparing highly luminescent CsPbX3 nanocrystals with variable compositions and dimensionalities, thereby improving the fundamental understanding of these materials and informing future synthetic and post-synthetic efforts toward trap-free CsPbX3 nanocrystals.

In dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), the electron transfer from photoexcited dye molecules to semiconductor substrates remains a major bottleneck. Replacing TiO2 with ZnO is expected to enhance the efficiency of DSCs, owing to the latter possesses a much larger electron mobility, but similar bandgap and band positions as TiO2 remain. However, the record efficiency of ZnO-based DSCs is only 7% compared with 13% of TiO2-based DSCs due to the even slower electron-transfer rate in ZnO-based DSCs, which becomes a long-standing puzzle. Here, we computationally investigate the electron transfer from the dye molecule into ZnO and TiO2, respectively, by performing the first-principles calculations within the frame of the Marcus theory. The predicted electron-transfer rate in the TiO2-based DSC is about 1.15 × 10(9) s(-1), a factor of 15 faster than that of the ZnO-based DSC, which is in good agreement with experimental data. We find that the much larger density of states of the TiO2 compared with ZnO near the conduction band edge is the dominant factor, which is responsible for the faster electron-transfer rate in TiO2-based DSCs. These denser states provide additional efficient channels for the electron transfer. We also provide design principles to boost the efficiency of DSCs through surface engineering of high mobility photoanode semiconductors.

Hole transfer between a CdSe/CdS core/shell semiconductor nanorod and a surface-ligated alkyl ferrocene is investigated by a combination of ab initio quantum chemistry calculations and electrochemical and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. The calculated driving force for hole transfer corresponds well with electrochemical measurements of nanorods partially ligated by 6-ferrocenylhexanethiolate. The calculations and the experiments suggest that single step hole transfer from the valence band to ferrocene is in the Marcus inverted region. Additionally, time-resolved photoluminescence data suggest that two-step hole transfer to ferrocene mediated by a deep trap state is unlikely. However, the calculations also suggest that shallow surface states of the CdS shell could play a significant role in mediating hole transfer as long as their energies are close enough to the nanorod highest occupied molecular orbital energy. Regardless of the detailed mechanism of hole transfer, our results suggest that holes may be extracted more efficiently from well-passivated nanocrystals by reducing the energetic driving force for hole transfer, thus minimizing energetic losses.

The partial transformation of ionic nanocrystals through cation exchange has been used to synthesize nanocrystal heterostructures. We demonstrate that the selectivity for cation exchange to take place at different facets of the nanocrystal plays an important role in determining the resulting morphology of the binary heterostructure. In the case of copper(I) (Cu(+)) cation exchange in cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorods, the reaction starts preferentially at the ends of the nanorods such that copper sulfide (Cu(2)S) grows inward from either end. The resulting morphology is very different from the striped pattern obtained in our previous studies of silver(I) (Ag(+)) exchange in CdS nanorods where nonselective nucleation of silver sulfide (Ag(2)S) occurs (Robinson, R. D.; Sadtler, B.; Demchenko, D. O.; Erdonmez, C. K.; Wang, L.-W.; Alivisatos, A. P. Science 2007, 317, 355-358). From interface formation energies calculated for several models of epitaxial connections between CdS and Cu(2)S or Ag(2)S, we infer the relative stability of each interface during the nucleation and growth of Cu(2)S or Ag(2)S within the CdS nanorods. The epitaxial attachments of Cu(2)S to the end facets of CdS nanorods minimize the formation energy, making these interfaces stable throughout the exchange reaction. Additionally, as the two end facets of wurtzite CdS nanorods are crystallographically nonequivalent, asymmetric heterostructures can be produced.

Colloidal InP quantum wires are grown by the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) method, and passivated with the traditional quantum dots surfactants 1-hexadecylamine and tri-n-octylphosphine oxide. The size dependence of the band gaps in the wires are determined from the absorption spectra, and compared to other experimental results for InP quantum dots and wires, and to the predictions of theory. The photoluminescence behavior of the wires is also investigated. Efforts to enhance photoluminescence efficiencies through photochemical etching in the presence of HF result only in photochemical thinning or photooxidation, without a significant influence on quantum-wire photoluminescence. However, photooxidation produces residual dot and rod domains within the wires, which are luminescent. The results establish that the quantum-wire band gaps are weakly influenced by the nature of the surface passivation and that colloidal quantum wires have intrinsically low photoluminescence efficiencies.

Achieving stable operation of photoanodes used as components of solar water splitting devices is critical to realizing the promise of this renewable energy technology. It is shown that p-type transparent conducting oxides (p-TCOs) can function both as a selective hole contact and corrosion protection layer for photoanodes used in light-driven water oxidation. Using NiCo2O4 as the p-TCO and n-type Si as a prototypical light absorber, a rectifying heterojunction capable of light driven water oxidation was created. By placing the charge separating junction in the Si using a np(+) structure and by incorporating a highly active heterogeneous Ni-Fe oxygen evolution catalyst, efficient light-driven water oxidation can be achieved. In this structure, oxygen evolution under AM1.5G illumination occurs at 0.95 V vs RHE, and the current density at the reversible potential for water oxidation (1.23 V vs RHE) is25 mA cm(-2). Stable operation was confirmed by observing a constant current density over 72 h and by sensitive measurements of corrosion products in the electrolyte. In situ Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate structural transformation of NiCo2O4 during electrochemical oxidation. The interface between the light absorber and p-TCO is crucial to produce selective hole conduction to the surface under illumination. For example, annealing to produce more crystalline NiCo2O4 produces only small changes in its hole conductivity, while a thicker SiOx layer is formed at the n-Si/p-NiCo2O4 interface, greatly reducing the PEC performance. The generality of the p-TCO protection approach is demonstrated by multihour, stable, water oxidation with n-InP/p-NiCo2O4 heterojunction photoanodes.

A novel electron acceptor was synthesized from one-step functionalization of the readily available indigo dye. The resulting bay-annulated indigo (BAI) was utilized for the preparation of a series of novel donor-acceptor small molecules and polymers. As revealed experimentally and by theoretical calculations, substituted BAIs have stronger electron accepting characteristics when compared to several premier electron deficient building blocks. As a result, the donor-acceptor materials incorporating BAI acceptor possess low-lying LUMO energy levels and small HOMO-LUMO gaps. In situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering studies of the thin films of BAI donor-acceptor polymers indicated improved crystallinity upon thermal treatment. Field effect transistors based on these polymers show excellent ambipolar transporting behavior, with the hole and electron mobilities reaching 1.5 and 0.41 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), respectively, affirming BAI as a potent electron accepting unit for high performance organic electronic materials.

We synthesize platinum nanoparticles with controlled average sizes of 2, 4, 6, and 8 nm and use them as model catalysts to study isopropanol oxidation to acetone in both the liquid and gas phases at 60 °C. The reaction at the solid/liquid interface is 2 orders of magnitude slower than that at the solid/gas interface, while catalytic activity increases with the size of platinum nanoparticles for both the liquid-phase and gas-phase reactions. The activation energy of the gas-phase reaction decreases with the platinum nanoparticle size and is in general much higher than that of the liquid-phase reaction which is largely insensitive to the size of catalyst nanoparticles. Water substantially promotes isopropanol oxidation in the liquid phase. However, it inhibits the reaction in the gas phase. The kinetic results suggest different mechanisms between the liquid-phase and gas-phase reactions, correlating well with different orientations of IPA species at the solid/liquid interface vs the solid/gas interface as probed by sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy under reaction conditions and simulated by computational calculations.

This work describes a molecular-level investigation of strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) in Pt/TiO(2) catalysts using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. This is the first time that SFG has been used to probe the highly selective oxide-metal interface during catalytic reaction, and the results demonstrate that charge transfer from TiO(2) on a Pt/TiO(2) catalyst controls the product distribution of furfuraldehyde hydrogenation by an acid-base mechanism. Pt nanoparticles supported on TiO(2) and SiO(2) are used as catalysts for furfuraldehyde hydrogenation. As synthesized, the Pt nanoparticles are encapsulated in a layer of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). The presence of PVP prevents interaction of the Pt nanoparticles with their support, so identical turnover rates and reaction selectivity is observed regardless of the supporting oxide. However, removal of the PVP with UV light results in a 50-fold enhancement in the formation of furfuryl alcohol by Pt supported on TiO(2), while no change is observed for the kinetics of Pt supported on SiO(2). SFG vibrational spectroscopy reveals that a furfuryl-oxy intermediate forms on TiO(2) as a result of a charge transfer interaction. This furfuryl-oxy intermediate is a highly active and selective precursor to furfuryl alcohol, and spectral analysis shows that the Pt/TiO(2) interface is required primarily for H spillover. Density functional calculations predict that O-vacancies on the TiO(2) surface activate the formation of the furfuryl-oxy intermediate via an electron transfer to furfuraldehyde, drawing a strong analogy between SMSI and acid-base catalysis.

“Self-supported” catalysts were prepared by the reaction of bis-MonoPhos ligand with rhodium(I) metallic ion on the basis of molecular assembling through coordination. These polymeric metal-organic assemblies are insoluble in common organic solvents and, as a result, provide an excellent opportunity for running asymmetric catalysis heterogeneously. The application of the self-supported Rh(II) catalysts in the asymmetric hydrogenation of olefin derivatives afforded a variety of enantioenriched amino acid and amine derivatives with high yields and enantioselectivities. This strategy might provide a new direction in asymmetric catalysis, particularly for the development of practical heterogeneous asymmetric synthesis of optically active compounds.

Soluble CdSe quantum wires are prepared by the solution-liquid-solid mechanism, using monodisperse bismith nanoparticles to catalyze wire growth. The quantum wires have micrometer lengths, diameters in the range of 5-20 nm, and diameter distributions of +/-10-20%. Spectroscopically determined wire band gaps compare closely to those calculated by the semiemipirical pseudopotential method, confirming 2D quantum confinement. The diameter dependence of the quantum wire band gaps is compared to that of CdSe quantum dots and rods. Quantum rod band gaps are shown to be delimited by the band gaps of dots and wires of like diameter, for short and long rods, respectively. The experimental data suggest that a length of ca. 30 nm is required for the third dimension of quantum confinement to fully vanish in CdSe rods. That length is about six times the bulk CdSe exciton Bohr radius.

A highly enantioselective epoxidation of cyclic enones with hydrogen peroxide has been developed that is catalyzed by chiral primary amine salts.
