Case Description: A 13-year-old female Miniature Horse was evaluated for progressive unilateral exophthalmia of the left globe of 3 weeks' duration., Clinical Findings: Results of a physical examination were unremarkable. Ophthalmic examination identified exophthalmus of the left globe with complete resistance to retropulsion and mild blepharoconjunctivitis. Computed tomography revealed a large, space-occupying mass within the left caudal maxillary and left conchofrontal sinuses. The mass extended into the left retrobulbar space and contacted the cribriform plate. Trephination yielded copious amounts of turbid yellow fluid. The diagnosis was a sinonasal cyst., Treatment and Outcome: Subtotal surgical excision of the cyst via a frontonasal osteoplastic flap was curative, with complete resolution of the exophthalmus. Histologic examination confirmed diagnosis of a sinonasal cyst. There was no evidence of cyst recurrence by 4 months after surgery., Clinical Relevance: Sinonasal cyst should be a differential diagnosis for retrobulbar disease in horses. Exophthalmia may be the only clinical finding in horses with a sinonasal cyst.

Lymphosarcoma associated with infection by avian reticuloendotheliosis virus was diagnosed in an Indian peafowl with exophthalmia and exposure keratitis. Exenteration of the orbit was complicated by a profound oculocardiac reflex and extensive hemorrhage during surgery. Orbital bleeding was controlled by direct pressure, electrocautery, topical administration of bovine thrombin, and application of sterile gelatin sponges and oxidized regenerated cellulose. A blood transfusion was also performed. In addition to describing methods of handling intraoperative complications of orbital exenteration in birds, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first report to describe an association of reticuloendotheliosis virus, which more commonly affects poultry, with lymphosarcoma in an Indian peafowl.

Eighteen eyes of 66 dogs were visual on reevaluation of traumatic proptosis. Twenty-one eyes were enucleated, and 4 dogs were euthanatized. In 18 cats, no eyes regained vision after traumatic proptosis: 12 cats had the affected eye enucleated, 2 had an eye that was considered blind, and 4 cats were euthanatized. Affected eyes of 45 dogs and 2 cats underwent surgical replacement and temporary tarsorrhaphy. Favorable prognostic indicators for eyes undergoing surgical replacement included proptosis in a brachycephalic dog, positive direct or consensual pupillary light response, normal findings on posterior segment examination, and a proptosed eye that had vision on initial examination. Unfavorable prognostic indicators included proptosis in a nonbrachycephalic dog, proptosis in cats, hyphema, no visible pupil, facial fractures, optic nerve damage, and avulsion of 3 or more extraocular muscles.

An 8-year-old rabbit was referred to an ophthalmologist because of intermittent bilateral exophthalmos and prolapse of the nictitating membranes. Both eyes could be retropulsed normally, and the exophthalmos was induced with ventroflexion. The rabbit had moderate hypercalcemia and a large mediastinal mass that could be seen on thoracic radiographs. The rabbit's condition was unchanged for 5 months. It was reexamined because of weight loss and paroxysmal coughing and, at that time, was thin and tachypneic, and had reduced thoracic compliance. Thoracotomy was performed, and a 5-cm-diameter encapsulated mass, subsequently determined histologically to be thymoma, was removed. The rabbit was euthanatized after surgery because of complications. The periodic exophthalmos and hypercalcemia in this rabbit were believed to be paraneoplastic syndromes.

A 6-year-old Quarter Horse was examined because of acute, severely swollen masseter muscles (palpation of which elicited pain response), exophthalmos, severe chemosis, and protrusion of the third eyelids. Blood selenium and vitamin E concentrations, and results of feed analysis and muscle biopsy supported a diagnosis of nutritional myopathy. The horse was treated and was clinically normal 2 weeks after discharge from the hospital.

An 8-year-old Labrador Retriever developed unilateral exophthalmos over a 1-year period. Contrast radiography, surgical exploration, and histologic examination revealed the cause to be an adenocarcinoma arising from the zygomatic salivary gland or duct.
