Based on the theory developed in Part III, this paper introduces a new method to retrieve snow microphysics from ground-based collocated X- and W-band vertically pointing Doppler radars. To take into account the variety of microphysical relations observed in natural precipitating snow and to quantify the uncertainty in the retrieval results caused by this variety, the retrieval is formulated using the ensemble-based method. The ensemble is determined by the spread of uncertainties in the microphysical descriptions applied to map the same radar observables to the retrieved quantities. The model descriptors use diverse assumptions concerning functional forms of particle size distribution and mass-velocity relations, all taken from previous observational studies. The mean of each ensemble is assumed to be the best estimate of the retrieval while its spread is defined by the standard deviation that characterizes its uncertainty. The main retrieved products are the characteristic size, the snow mass content, and the density parameter, as well as the vertical air motion. Four observables used in the retrieval are the difference in reflectivities and in Doppler velocities at two wavelengths, together with the equivalent reflectivity factor and Doppler velocity at X band. The solutions that are not consistent with all four observables after taking into account their estimated measurement errors are eliminated from the ensembles. The application of the retrieval algorithm to the real data yields a snow microphysical description that agrees with the snow characteristics seen in the vertical profile of the observed Doppler spectrum. As a first step toward retrieval of snow microphysics from two vertically pointing radars operating at X band and W band, a theoretical model of snow microphysics is formulated in which the number of unknown parameters is reduced to snow particle density and to two bulk quantities controlling the particle size distribution. This reduction of parameters is achieved by normalizing not only the size distribution but also the snow particle mass in the mass-size relationship as well as by using a relationship between snow density and snow terminal fall velocity. However, no single snow microphysical model could describe the observed variability in the radar measurements. The uncertainty in the developed deterministic relations that map the microphysical parameters to the observables is shown to be mainly associated with the assumed dependence of particle velocity on its mass and on the particle size distribution (PSD) representation. Hence, various mass-velocity relationships together with different generic functional forms of the PSD reported in literature are described in this paper and then used in the retrieval. The derived relations provide a reasonable range of uncertainty associated with the microphysics when used for the actual retrieval of snow properties from observations in Part IV. The uncertainty in the backscattering computations of an individual particle, performed using Mie theory assuming spherical form with nonuniform density, is not taken into account in this study. Mesoscale and large-scale atmospheric models use a bulk surface flux algorithm to compute the turbulent flux boundary conditions at the bottom of the atmosphere from modeled mean meteorological quantities such as wind speed, temperature, and humidity. This study, on the other hand, uses a state-of-the-art bulk air--sea flux algorithm in stand-alone mode to compute the surface fluxes of momentum, sensible and latent heat, and enthalpy for a wide range of typical (though randomly generated) meteorological conditions over the open ocean. The flux algorithm treats both interfacial transfer (controlled by molecular processes right at the air--sea interface) and transfer mediated by sea spray. Because these two transfer routes obey different scaling laws, neutral-stability, 10-m transfer coefficients for enthalpy CKN10, latent heat CEN10, and sensible heat CHN10 are quite varied when calculated from the artificial flux data under the assumption of only interfacial transfer--the assumption in almost all analyses of measured air--sea fluxes. That variability increases with wind speed because of increasing spray-mediated transfer and also depends on surface temperature and atmospheric stratification. The analysis thereby reveals as fallacious several assumptions that are common in air--sea interaction research--especially in high winds. For instance, CKN10, CEN10, and CHN10 are not constants; they are not even single-valued functions of wind speed, nor must they increase monotonically with wind speed if spray-mediated transfer is important. Moreover, the ratio CKN10/ CDN10, where CDN10 is the neutral-stability, 10-m drag coefficient, does not need to be greater than 0.75 at all wind speeds, as many have inferred from Emanuel''s seminal paper in this journal. The low-frequency response to changes in external forcing for the climate system is a fundamental issue. In two recent papers the authors developed a new blended response algorithm for predicting the response of a nonlinear chaotic forced-dissipative system to small changes in external forcing. This new algorithm is based on the fluctuation–dissipation theorem and combines the geometrically exact general response formula using integration of a linear tangent model at short response times and the classical quasi-Gaussian response algorithm at longer response times. This algorithm overcomes the inherent numerical instability in the geometric formula arising because of positive Lyapunov exponents at longer times while removing potentially large systematic errors from the classical quasi-Gaussian approximation at moderate times. Here the new blended method is tested on the low-frequency response for a T21 barotropic truncation on the sphere with realistic topography in two dynamical regimes corresponding to the mean climate behavior at 300- and 500-hPa geopotential height. The 300-hPa regime has robust strongly mixing behavior with a nearly Gaussian equilibrium state distribution, whereas the 500-hPa regime is weakly chaotic with slowly decaying time autocorrelation functions and strongly non-Gaussian climatology. It is found that the blended response algorithm has significant skill beyond the classical quasi-Gaussian algorithm for the response of the climate mean state and its variance. Additionally, the predicted response of the T21 barotropic model in the lowfrequency regime for these functionals does not seem to be affected by the model's structural instability. A simple and fast algorithm for generating two correlated stochastic two-dimensional (2D) cloud fields is described. The algorithm is illustrated with two broken cumulus cloud fields: cloud optical depth and cloud-top height retrieved from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Only two 2D fields are required as an input. The algorithm output is statistical realizations of these two fields with approximately the same correlation and joint distribution functions as the original ones. The major assumption of the algorithm is statistical isotropy of the fields. In contrast to fractals and the Fourier filtering methods frequently used for stochastic cloud modeling, the proposed method is based on spectral models of homogeneous random fields. To retain the same probability density function as the (first) original field, the method of inverse distribution function is used. When the spatial distribution of the first field has been generated, a realization of the correlated second field is simulated using a conditional distribution matrix. This paper serves as a theoretical justification of the publicly available software “Simulation of a two-component cloud field,” which has been recently released. Although 2D rather than full 3D, the stochastic realizations of two correlated cloud fields that mimic statistics of given fields have proven to be very useful to study 3D radiative transfer features of broken cumulus clouds for a better understanding of shortwave radiation and the interpretation of remote sensing retrievals. This paper presents a conceptual approach toward the remote sensing of cirrus cloud particle size and optical depth using the degree of polarization and polarized reflectance associated with the first three Stokes parameters, I, Q, and U, for the 0.865- and 2.25-μm wavelengths. A vector line-by-line equivalent radiative transfer program including the full Stokes parameters based on the adding method was developed. The retrieval algorithm employs the steepest-descent method in the form of a series of numerical iteration procedures to search for the simulated polarization parameters that best match the measured values. Sensitivity studies were performed to investigate the behavior of phase-matrix elements as functions of scattering angles for three ice crystal size–shape combinations. Overall, each phase-matrix element shows some sensitivity toward ice crystal shape, size, and surface roughness due to the various optical effects. Synthetic analysis reveals that the retrieval algorithm is highly accurate, while polarimetric and radiometric error sources cause very small retrieval errors. Finally, an illustrative example of applying the retrieval algorithm to airborne Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER) data during the European Cloud and Radiation Experiment (EUCREX) is presented. Arakawa and Lamb discovered a finite-difference approximation to the shallow-water equations that exactly conserves finite-difference approximations to the energy and potential enstrophy of the fluid. The Arakawa– Lamb algorithm is a stunning and important achievement—stunning, because in the shallow-water case, neither energy nor potential enstrophy is a simple quadratic, and important because the simultaneous conservation of energy and potential enstrophy is known to prevent the spurious cascade of energy to high wavenumbers. However, the method followed byis somewhat ad hoc, and it is difficult to see how it might be generalized to other systems. In this paper, thealgorithm is rederived and greatly generalized in a way that should permit still further generalizations. Beginning with the Hamiltonian formulation of shallow-water dynamics, its two essential ingredients—the Hamiltonian functional and the Poisson-bracket operator—are replaced by finite-difference approximations that maintain the desired conservation laws. Energy conservation is maintained if the discrete Poisson bracket retains the antisymmetry property of the exact bracket, a trivial constraint. Potential enstrophy is conserved if a set of otherwise arbitrary coefficients is chosen in such a way that a very large quadratic form contains only diagonal terms. Using a symbolic manipulation program to satisfy the potential-enstrophy constraint, it is found that the energy- and potential-enstrophy-conserving schemes corresponding to a stencil of 25 grid points contain 22 free parameters. Thescheme corresponds to the vanishing of all free parameters. No parameter setting can increase the overall accuracy of the schemes beyond second order, but 19 of the free parameters may be independently adjusted to yield a scheme with fourth-order accuracy in the vorticity equation. An algorithm based on the empirical normal mode analysis is used in a comparative study of the climatology and variability in dynamical-core experiments of the Global Environmental Multiscale model. The algorithm is proposed as a means to assess properties of the model's dynamical core and to establish objective criteria for model intercomparison studies. In this paper, the analysis is restricted to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Two dynamical-core experiments are considered: one with the forcing proposed by Held and Suarez, later modified by Williamson et al. (called HSW experiment), and the other with a forcing inspired by the prescriptions of Boer and Denis (BD). Results are also compared with those of an earlier diagnosis of NCEP reanalyses. Normal modes and wave-activity spectra are similar to those found in the reanalysis data, although details depend on the forcing. For instance, wave-energy amplitudes are higher with the BD forcing, and an approximate energy equipartition is observed in the spectrum of wavenumber-1 modes in the NCEP data and the BD experiment but not in the HSW experiment. The HSW forcing has a relatively strong relaxation acting on the complete temperature field, whereas the BD forcing only acts on the zonal-mean temperature, letting the internal dynamics alone drive the wave-activity spectral cascade. This difference may explain why the BD forcing is more successful in reproducing the observed wave activity in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a global validation package for satellite aerosol optical thickness retrieval using the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations as ground truth is described. To standardize the validation procedure, the optimum time–space match-up window, the ensemble statistical analysis method, the best selection of AERONET channels, and the numerical scheme used to interpolate/extrapolate these observations to satellite channels have been identified through sensitivity studies. The package is shown to be a unique tool for more objective validation and intercomparison of satellite aerosol retrievals, helping to satisfy an increasingly important requirement of the satellite aerosol remote sensing community. Results of applying the package to the second-generation operational aerosol observational data (AEROBS) from the NOAA-14 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) in 1998 and to the same year aerosol observation data [Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System-Single Scanner Foodprint version 4 (CERES-SSF4)] from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS) are presented as examples of global validation. The usefulness of the package for identifying improvements to the aerosol optical thickness τ retrieval algorithm is also demonstrated. The principal causes of systematic errors in the current National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) operational aerosol optical thickness retrieval algorithm have been identified and can be reduced significantly, if the correction and adjustment suggested from the global validation are adopted. Random error in the τ retrieval is identified to be a major source of error on deriving the effective Ångström wavelength exponent α and may be associated with regional differences in aerosol particles, which are not accounted for in the current second-generation... The hydroxyl radical (OH) is one of the most reactive trace species and plays several important roles in the photochemical equilibrium and energy balance in the mesosphere. Global observations of OH from satellite instruments have a role to play in the study of OH and water vapor variations. This study describes an advanced algorithm to detect mesospheric OH emission profiles from the Suomi NPP satellite Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP). A triplet technique has been adapted to the OMPS/LP radiance measurements for determining OH emission signatures and OH index (OHI) from the OH A2Σ+-X2Π 0-0 band near the 308.8-nm wavelength. The derived mesospheric profiles provide an overall picture of the vertical distribution of OHI between 55 and 84 km and seasonal and latitudinal variability of the strength and height of the OHI. The observed annual cycle is correlated with the water vapor cycle and anticorrelated with the mesospheric temperature cycle. The data show that the relationships persist during the period of April 2012–December 2020. The seasonal behavior of OHI may be associated with variations in solar illumination or mesospheric water vapor abundance. The influence of solar illumination is dominant in the midlatitudes, while the OHI pattern is dominated by water vapor photolysis and other influences in the tropics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A computationally efficient method is presented to account for the horizontal cloud inhomogeneity by using a radiatively equivalent plane-parallel homogeneous (PPH) cloud. The algorithm can accurately match the calculations of the reference (rPPH) independent column approximation (ICA) results but uses only the same computational time required for a single plane-parallel computation. The effective optical depth of this synthetic sPPH cloud is derived by exactly matching the direct transmission to that of the inhomogeneous ICA cloud. The effective scattering asymmetry factor is found from a precalculated albedo inverse lookup table that is allowed to vary over the range from −1.0 to 1.0. In the special cases of conservative scattering and total absorption, the synthetic method is exactly equivalent to the ICA, with only a small bias (about 0.2% in flux) relative to ICA resulting from imperfect interpolation in using the lookup tables. In principle, the ICA albedo can be approximated accurately regardless of cloud inhomogeneity. For a more complete comparison, the broadband shortwave albedo and transmission calculated from the synthetic sPPH cloud and averaged over all incident directions have RMS biases of 0.26% and 0.76%, respectively, for inhomogeneous clouds over a wide variation of particle size. The advantages of the synthetic PPH method are that 1) it is not required that all the cloud subcolumns have uniform microphysical characteristic, 2) it is applicable to any 1D radiative transfer scheme, and 3) it can handle arbitrary cloud optical depth distributions and an arbitrary number of cloud subcolumns with uniform computational efficiency. The Asian monsoon anticyclone (AMA), which is primarily driven by the latent heat released by monsoon precipitation, is one of the dominant features of the Northern Hemisphere summer circulation in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Due to variations in the diabatic heating, interactions with Rossby waves propagating along the subtropical jet, and internal dynamics within the anticyclone, the circulation of the AMA is unsteady. Here we use the ERA-Interim dataset and trajectories computed with ERA-Interim winds to show that the AMA contains two or three distinct synoptic-scale subvortices 69% of the time, while a single circulation center is present only 23% of the time. More than three simultaneous subvortices are uncommon. Observed behaviors of the subvortices include 1) splitting of a single vortex into two vortices; 2) merger of two vortices into a single vortex; 3) vortex shedding in the eastward direction; 4) vortex shedding in the westward direction; and 5) formation, movement, and dissipation of a vortex. Tropical cyclogenesis (TCG) is a multiscale process that involves interactions between large-scale circulation and small-scale convection. A near-global aquaplanet cloud-resolving model (NGAqua) with 4-km horizontal grid spacing that produces tropical cyclones (TCs) is used to investigate TCG and its predictability. This study analyzes an ensemble of three 20-day NGAqua simulations, with initial white-noise perturbations of low-level humidity. TCs develop spontaneously from the northern edge of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), where large-scale flows and tropical convection provide necessary conditions for barotropic instability. Zonal bands of positive low-level absolute vorticity organize into cyclonic vortices, some of which develop into TCs. A new algorithm is developed to track the cyclonic vortices. A vortex-following framework analysis of the low-level vorticity budget shows that vertical stretching of absolute vorticity due to convective heating contributes positively to the vorticity spinup of the TCs. A case study and composite analyses suggest that sufficient humidity is key for convective development. TCG in these three NGAqua simulations undergoes the same series of interactions. The locations of cyclonic vortices are broadly predetermined by planetary-scale circulation and humidity patterns associated with ITCZ breakdown, which are predictable up to 10 days. A unified formulation of the general decomposition of radiance and the radiative transfer equation (RTE) of plane-parallel atmospheres and the general solutions of the generally decomposed RTE system (GD-RTES) are presented. It is shown that the eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix of the GD-RTES are real and the eigenvectors are independent of each other when the single-scattering albedo is less than unity; the general solution of the GD-RTES for a homogeneous layer can then be expressed in combinations of the exponential functions of the optical depth. The solution for nonhomogeneous atmosphere–surface systems can be obtained through either the matrix operator method or the linear system method. An outline of the general procedure is given, and a detailed example will be provided in Part II of this work. The formulation can serve as a meta-algorithm from which the prototypes of new algorithms can be developed and tested. Some of the conventional methods such as the discrete ordinate method and the spherical harmonic method can be considered as instances of the unified formulation. With the unified formulation, some interesting topics about the RTE and its solution can be discussed more generally, such as those about correction for energy conservation, treatment of boundary conditions, and transformation for numerical stability; some of the methods that have already proved useful to these issues in the well-established algorithms can be generalized to be available to the other methods that can be derived from the unified formulation. A grid-refinement-based method is implemented in a community atmospheric model to improve the representation of convective boundary layer (CBL) turbulence on gray-zone [i.e., ;O(1) km] grids. At this resolution, CBL convection is partially resolved and partially subgrid scale (SGS), such that neither traditional mesoscale planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes nor SGS closures for large-eddy simulations (LESs) are appropriate. The proposed method utilizes two-way interactive nesting to refine the horizontal resolution of the unstable surface layer of the daytime CBL. SGS turbulent mixing in the fine nest and coarse parent grids are parameterized by an LES turbulence closure and a PBL scheme, respectively. The method does not rely on predetermined empirical functions to introduce grid (scale) dependency and in theory works with any PBL scheme. Compared to the stand-alone gray-zone simulation, the proposed approach shows improvements in terms of higher-order statistics, the timing of the onset of resolved convection, and the convective structures. A deficiency of the method exists when the nest domain is limited to the surface layer; the convective structures become gradually contaminated by spurious convection on the parent gray-zone grid. As numerical models of complex atmospheric flows increase their quality and resolution, it becomes valuable to isolate and quantify the embedded resolved gravity waves. The authors propose a spatial filtering method combined with a selection of quadratic diagnostic quantities such as heat, momentum, and energy fluxes to do this. These covariant quantities were found to be insensitive to filter cutoff length scales between 300 and 700 km, suggesting the existence of a 'cospectral gap.' The gravity waves identified with the proposed method display known properties from idealized studies, including vertical propagation, upwind propagation, the relationship between momentum and energy flux, and agreement with fluxes derived from an alternative method involving simulations with and without terrain. The proposed method is applied to 2- and 6-km-resolution realistic WRF simulations of orographic and nonorographic gravity waves over and around New Zealand within complex frontal cyclones. Deep mountain wave, shallow mountain wave, jet-generated gravity wave, and convection-generated gravity wave events were chosen for analysis. The four wave events shared the characteristics of positive vertical energy flux, negative zonal momentum flux, and upwind horizontal energy flux. Persistent layers of enhanced equivalent radar reflectivity factor and reduced spectral width were commonly observed within cloud-free regions of the tropical marine boundary layer (TMBL) with the National Center for Atmospheric Research S-Pol radar during the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean (RICO) field campaign. Bragg scattering is shown to be the primary source of these layers. Two mechanisms are proposed to explain the Bragg scattering layers (BSLs), the first involving turbulent mixing and the second involving detrainment and evaporation of cloudy air. These mechanisms imply that BSLs should exist in layers with tops (bases) defined by local relative humidity (RH) minima (maxima). The relationship between BSLs and RH is explored. An equation for the vertical gradient of radio refractivity N is derived, and a scale analysis is used to demonstrate the close relationship between vertical RH and N gradients. This is tested using the derived radar BSL boundary altitudes, 131 surface-based soundings, and 34 sets of about six near-coincident, aircraft-released dropsondes. First, dropsonde data are used to quantify the finescale variability of the RH field. Then, within limits imposed by this variability, altitudes of tops (bases) of radar BSLs are shown to agree with altitudes of RH minima (maxima). These findings imply that S-band radars can be used to track the vertical profile of RH variations as a function of time and height, that the vertical RH profile of the TMBL is highly variable over horizontal scales as small as 60 km, and that BSLs are a persistent, coherent feature that delineate aspects of TMBL mesoscale structure. Green's function is a widely used approach for boundary value problems. In problems related to radiative transfer, Green's function has been found to be useful in land, ocean, and atmosphere remote sensing. It is also a key element in higher order perturbation theory. This paper presents an explicit expression of the Green's function, in terms of the source and radiation field variables, for a plane-parallel atmosphere with either vacuum boundaries or a reflecting [atmosphere-bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF)] surface. A FORTRAN 95 code, Green's function and discrete ordinate method (GDOM), has been developed to efficiently compute the Green's function. This code also integrates with an implementation of the discrete ordinate method with several extensions and improvements. Computing complexity of the Green's function algorithm is analyzed, and validation of the code is discussed.

By applying a cloud-tracking algorithm to tropical convective systems in a regional high-resolution model simulation, this study documents the environmental conditions before and after convective systems are initiated over ocean and land by following them during their lifetime. The comparative roles of various mechanisms of convection-environment interaction on the longevity of convective systems are quantified. The statistics of lifetime, maximum area, and propagation speed of the simulated deep convection agree well with geostationary satellite observations. Among the environmental variables considered, lifetime of convective systems is found to be most related to midtropospheric moisture before as well as after the initiation of convection. Over ocean, convective systems enhance surface fluxes through the associated cooling and drying of the boundary layer as well as increased wind gusts. This process appears to play a minor positive role in the longevity of systems. For systems of equal lifetime, those over land tend to be more intense than those over ocean especially during the early stages of their life cycle. Both over ocean and land, convection is found to transport momentum vertically to increase low-level shear and decrease upper-level shear, but no discernible effect of shear on the lifetime of the convective systems is found. This idealized modeling study of moist baroclinic waves addresses the formation of moist ascending airstreams, so-called warm conveyor belts (WCBs), their characteristics, and their significance for the downstream flow evolution. Baroclinic wave simulations are performed on the f plane, growing from a finite-amplitude upper-level potential vorticity (PV) perturbation on a zonally uniform jet stream. This nonmodal approach allows for dispersive upstream and downstream development and for studying WCBs in the primary cyclone and the downstream cyclone. A saturation adjustment scheme is used as the only difference between the dry and moist simulations, which are systematically compared using a cyclone-tracking algorithm, with an eddy kinetic energy budget analysis, and from a PV perspective. Using trajectories and a selection criterion of maximum ascent, forward- and rearward-sloping WCBs in the moist simulation are identified. No WCB is identified in the dry simulation. Forward-sloping WCBs originate in the warm sector, move into the frontal fracture region, and ascend over the bent-back front, where maximum latent heating occurs in this simulation. The outflow of these WCBs is located at altitudes with prevailing zonal winds; they hence flow anticyclonically ('forward') into the downstream ridge. In case of a slightly weaker ascent, WCBs curve cyclonically ('rearward') above the cyclone center. A detailed analysis of the PV evolution along the WCBs reveals PV production in the lower troposphere and destruction in the upper troposphere. Consequently, WCBs transport low-PV air into their outflow region, which contributes to the formation of distinct negative PV anomalies. Coastal and island Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites are used to determine characteristic aerosol modes over marine environments. They are compared with the assumed modes used in the operational Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) ocean aerosol algorithm, and the results show that 1) the standard deviation values of three fine aerosol modes (0.6) and one dustlike aerosol mode (0.8) are much higher than the corresponding statistical AERONET modal values (0.45 and 0.6, respectively). The values of three sea salt aerosol modes (0.6) are somewhat lower than the corresponding statistical AERONET modal value (0.675). 2) The number median radius of the current fine and dustlike aerosol modes cannot span the dynamic range of corresponding aerosol distribution properly. 3) AERONET products show that the standard deviation and the number median radius exhibit an obvious negative correlation, especially for sea salt and dustlike aerosol modes. According to this, a refinement of the current aerosol modes is made. These revised modes are used in a version of the MODIS retrieval over ocean. Compared with the current aerosol modes: 1) more retrieved aerosol optical depths (AODs) from the revised aerosol modes lie within the expected error bars and 2) the linear regression lines of the retrievals from the revised aerosol modes and AERONET are closer to the 1:1 line. Despite the fact that latent heating in cloud systems drives many atmospheric circulations, including tropical cyclones, little is known of its magnitude and structure, largely because of inadequate observations. In this work, a reasonably high-resolution (2 km), four-dimensional airborne Doppler radar retrieval of the latent heat of condensation/evaporation is presented for rapidly intensifying Hurricane Guillermo (1997). Several advancements in the basic retrieval algorithm are shown, including 1) analyzing the scheme within the dynamically consistent framework of a numerical model, 2) identifying algorithm sensitivities through the use of ancillary data sources, and 3) developing a precipitation budget storage term parameterization. The determination of the saturation state is shown to be an important part of the algorithm for updrafts of ~5 m s−−1 or less. The uncertainties in the magnitude of the retrieved heating are dominated by errors in the vertical velocity. Using a combination of error propagation and Monte Carlo uncertainty techniques, biases are found to be small, and randomly distributed errors in the heating magnitude are ~16%% for updrafts greater than 5 m s−−1 and ~156%% for updrafts of 1 m s−−1. Even though errors in the vertical velocity can lead to large uncertainties in the latent heating field for small updrafts/downdrafts, in an integrated sense the errors are not as drastic. Because of the mathematical and numerical limitations, standard statistical methods known from the literature are not applicable to inferring jump processes under exogenous influence. Such processes can be considered, for example, in the atmosphere (transitions between different cloud types) and in the ocean (phase transitions between water and ice). Reasons for these intrinsic limitations of standard methods are investigated and a method for the inference of discrete microscopic jump models based on macroscopic ensemble observations is presented. It significantly extends the recently developed methods of nonstationary Markov model parameterization (which are constrained to a single exogenous factor and to direct individual observations of the jump process realizations). The main advantage of the new method is the possibility of inference from indirect ensemble observations with multiple exogenous factors. Moreover, this method allows for a new possibility to test whether the available time series is best described via stationary or nonstationary and Markovian (with memory) or independent (without memory) processes. It also allows estimation of the relative significance of the exogenous factors and their impact on the jump probabilities. The new framework provides a unified toolkit for data analysis of jump processes with the same level of detail now possible for standard continuous state space tools. The resulting numerical algorithm is applied to analysis of the total relative cloud cover data in the midlatitudes and in the tropics under the influence of some meteorologically relevant local and global exogenous factors. Data collected in midlatitude cirrus clouds by instruments on jet aircraft typically show particle size distributions that have distinct distribution modes in both the 10--30- μμm maximum dimension ( D) size range and the 200--300- μμm D size range or larger. A literal interpretation of the small D mode in these datasets suggests that total concentrations Nt in midlatitude cirrus are, on average, well in excess of 1 cm−−3 whereas more conventional analyses of in situ data and cloud process model results suggest Nt values a factor of 10 less. Given this wide discrepancy, questions have been raised regarding the influence of data artifacts caused by the shattering of large crystals on aircraft and probe surfaces. This inconsistency and the general nature of the cirrus particle size distribution are examined using a ground-based remote sensing dataset. An algorithm using millimeter-wavelength radar Doppler moments and Raman lidar-derived extinction is developed to retrieve a bimodal particle size distribution and its uncertainty. This algorithm is applied to case studies as well as to 313 h of cirrus measurements collected at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement site near Lamont, Oklahoma, in 2000. It is shown that particle size distributions in cirrus can often be described as bimodal, and that this bimodality is a function of temperature and location within cirrus layers. However, the existence of Nt > 1 cm−−3 in cirrus is rare (<1%% of the time) and the Nt implied by the remote sensing data tends to be on the order of 100 cm−−3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polar vortex vacillations are investigated using long-term simulations of potential-vorticity (PV)-based shallow-water (SW) models for the stratosphere. In the models examined, mechanical forcing is applied through a time-independent topography mimicking tropospheric excitation of the stratosphere. Thermal forcing is applied through a linear relaxation of the mass field to a time-independent equilibrium state mimicking the radiative relaxation taking place in the stratosphere. The SW equations in the PV, velocity divergence, and acceleration divergence representation are solved for a range of resolutions using the ''diabatic contour-advective semi-Lagrangian'' (DCASL) algorithm and a standard pure semi-Lagrangian (SL) algorithm. Using very different numerical algorithms enables the determination of the degree of numerical sensitivity and the properties of the vacillations with much greater accuracy than in previous related studies. The focus here is on the Lagrangian or material evolution of the polar vortex. The authors examine quasi-Lagrangian diagnostics based on equivalent latitude, the mass enclosed by PV contours, and the terms involved in its time evolution. The PV field forms the basis for calculating quasi-Lagrangian diagnostics. Variations in the mass enclosed by a PV contour are associated with nonconservative processes such as diabatic heating, friction, and irreversible small-scale mixing. Generally, the mass of the polar vortex increases under the action of diabatic mass fluxes, whereas it decreases under the action of dissipative mass fluxes. The results herein differ from previous results reported at T42 resolution by Rong and Waugh in which a spectral transform algorithm is used to solve the SW equations in a vorticity--divergence--mass representation, and in which dissipation is provided by explicitly damping vorticity using hyperdiffusion. Except for the first large-amplitude oscillation, there is little sign of a clear, systematic phase shift between the dissipative and diabatic mass fluxes across the edge of the polar vortex, as proposed by Rong and Waugh as the main mechanism responsible for the vacillations. Concomitant with the absence of a phase shift, the vacillations tend to decay and occur intermittently. Rather than a phase shift, inherent fluctuations in both the diabatic and mass fluxes across the edge of the polar vortex appear to be responsible for the vacillations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because of position errors traditional methods of data assimilation can broaden and weaken jets or other flow structures leading to reduced forecast skill. Here a technique to assimilate properties of coherent structures is developed and tested. Focusing on jets, the technique identifies jets in both the modeled and observed fields and warps the model grid so that the jet positions are better aligned prior to further assimilation of observations. The technique is tested using optimal interpolation on the flow in a two-layer quasigeostrophic channel. The results show that a simple and fast jet position correction algorithm can significantly improve the skill of a 12-h forecast. For migrating tides or fast-moving planetary waves, polarization relations derived from the linear wave equations are required to accurately derive the wind components from the temperature field. A common problem in diagnosing winds from the measured temperature is the error amplification associated with apparent singularities in the wave polarization relations. The authors have developed a spectral module that accurately derives tidal winds from the measured tidal temperature field and effectively eliminates the error amplification near the apparent singularities. The algorithm is used to perform a diagnostic analysis of tidal winds and the Eliassen–Palm (EP) flux divergence in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) based on the zonal mean and tidal temperature fields derived from 6 yr of temperature measurements made by the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument onboard the Thermosphere–Ionosphere–Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. The derived zonal mean wind and diurnal tidal amplitude reveal new insights into the mesospheric biennial oscillation (MBO) that exists in the MLT at both equatorial and midlatitude regions. The equatorial MBO in the zonal mean wind is present in the entire mesosphere from 50 to 90 km. The equatorial MBO in the temperature amplitude of the diurnal tide occurs near the mesopause region between 80 and 90 km and is largely coincident with the downward phase propagation of the equatorial MBO in the zonal mean wind, indicating a possible mechanism of wave–mean flow interaction between the two. On the other hand, the newly discovered midlatitude MBOs in zonal mean wind and the meridional wind in diurnal tide occur at different altitudes, suggesting possibly a remote forcing–response relationship. The acceleration or deceleration of the zonal mean wind due to EP flux divergence that is contributed by the migrating tides peaks at midlatitudes with a typical value of 10–20 m s-1 day-1 around 95 km. Cloud droplet effective radius (DER) and liquid water path (LWP) are two key parameters for the quantitative assessment of cloud effects on the exchange of energy and water. Chang and Li presented an algorithm using multichannel measurements made at 3.7, 2.1, and 1.6 μm to retrieve a cloud DER vertical profile for improved cloud LWP estimation. This study applies the multichannel algorithm to the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data on the Aqua satellite, which also carries the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) for measuring cloud LWP and precipitation. By analyzing one day of coincident MODIS and AMSR-E observations over the tropical oceans between 40°S and 40°N for overcast warm clouds (>273 K) having optical depths between 3.6 and 23, the effects of DER vertical variation on the MODIS-derived LWP are reported. It is shown that the LWP tends to be overestimated if the DER increases with height within the cloud and underestimated if the DER decreases with height within the cloud. Despite the uncertainties in both MODIS and AMSR-E retrievals, the result shows that accounting for the DER vertical variation reduces the mean biases and root-mean-square errors between the MODIS- and AMSR-E–derived LWPs. Besides, the manner in which the DER changes with height has the potential for differentiating precipitative and nonprecipitative warm clouds. For precipitating clouds, the DER at the cloud top is substantially smaller than the DER at the cloud base. Observations made by the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument on board NASA’s Thermosphere–Ionosphere–Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite have been processed using Salby’s fast Fourier synoptic mapping (FFSM) algorithm. The mapped data provide a first synoptic look at the mean structure and traveling waves of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) since the launch of the TIMED satellite in December 2001. The results show the presence of various wave modes in the MLT, which reach largest amplitude above the mesopause and include Kelvin and Rossby–gravity waves, eastward-propagating diurnal oscillations (“non-sun-synchronous tides”), and a set of quasi-normal modes associated with the so-called 2-day wave. The latter exhibits marked seasonal variability, attaining large amplitudes during the solstices and all but disappearing at the equinoxes. SABER data also show a strong quasi-stationary Rossby wave signal throughout the middle atmosphere of the winter hemisphere; the signal extends into the Tropics and even into the summer hemisphere in the MLT, suggesting ducting by westerly background zonal winds. At certain times of the year, the 5-day Rossby normal mode and the 4-day wave associated with instability of the polar night jet are also prominent in SABER data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors address the problem of optimization of the microphysical information extracted from a simulation system composed of high-resolution numerical models and multiparameter radar data or other available measurements. As a tool in the exploration of this question, a bulk microphysical scheme based on the general approach of scaling normalization of particle size distribution (PSD) is proposed. This approach does not rely on a particular functional form imposed on the PSD and naturally leads to power-law relationships between the PSD moments providing an accurate and compact PSD representation. To take into account the possible evolution of the shape/curvature of the distribution, ignored within standard one- and two-moment microphysical schemes, a new three-moment scheme based on the two-moment scaling normalization is proposed. The methodology of the moment retrieval included in the three-moment scheme can also be useful as a retrieval algorithm combining different remote sensing observations. The developed bulk microphysical scheme presents a unified formulation for microphysical parameterization using one, two, or three independent moments, suitable in the context of data assimilation. The effectiveness of the scheme with different combinations of independent moments is evaluated by comparison with a very high resolution spectral model within a 1D framework on representative microphysical processes: rain sedimentation and evaporation. A database of cotemporal, collocated satellite and in situ observations is used to examine the association between the brightness temperature differences measured by the thermal infrared channels (T45) of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and water vapor estimates (ω) derived from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). This channel difference is used to estimate the atmospheric correction (due mostly to water vapor absorption) in sea surface temperature (SST) algorithms. The association between T45 and ω is found to be greatest for tropical latitudes; for mid- and high latitudes, the association is best during summer. However, the association tends to decrease toward mid- and higher latitudes during other periods. SST residual errors (satellite - buoy) show a negative mean in the Tropics, suggesting undercorrection for water vapor attenuation in the Tropics. This underestimation is explicitly shown for SST residuals in the high-water-vapor regimes of the Arabian Sea. In mid- and high latitudes, the variability of atmospheric water vapor and air-sea temperature difference contributes to the weaker association between T45 and ω and results in positive mean SST residual errors. A one-dimensional radiative transfer algorithm that accounts for correlations between the optical thickness and the incident direct solar radiation is developed to compute the domain-averaged shortwave irradiance profile. It divides the direct irradiance into four components and treats the direct irradiance in two separate, clear and cloudy columns to account for the fact that clouds attenuate the direct irradiance more than clear sky. The horizontal inhomogeneity of clouds in the cloudy column is treated by the gamma-weighted two-stream approximation, which assumes that the optical thickness of clouds follows a gamma distribution. The algorithm inputs the cloud fraction, cumulative cloud fraction as a function of height, and a parameter expressing the shape of the probability density function of the cloud optical thickness distribution in addition to inputs required for a two-stream radiative transfer model. These cloud property inputs can be obtained using ground- and satellite-based instruments. Therefore, the algorithm can treat realistic cloud overlap features and horizontal inhomogeneity of clouds in a framework of one-dimensional radiative transfer. A diagnostic algorithm, based on the empirical normal mode decomposition technique, is proposed as a diagnostic tool in studies of the atmospheric variability. It begins by analyzing the transient eddies in terms of empirical modes that are orthogonal with respect to wave activities. Time-dependent amplitudes together with wave activity spectra are used to classify the modes and compute their propagation properties. The algorithm is applied to a sequence of four Northern Hemisphere winters taken from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalyses, with a focus on the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, giving a set of empirical modes of wind, pressure, specific volume, and potential vorticity. Results indicate that most of the wave activity is carried by large-scale, eastward-propagating modes centered at middle and high latitudes. Some properties of the leading modes, such as their average phase speeds, are in good agreement with the predictions of linear dynamics. Characteristics of the leading wavenumber-5 mode, such as its dipolar pressure pattern near the summer hemisphere tropopause, its propagation speed of 12 m s[sup -1] and decay rate of 3 days, can be explained by the theory of quasi modes, defined as superpositions of singular modes sharply peaked in the phase speed domain. Other large-scale, midlatitude modes also show properties compatible with the quasi-modal description, suggesting that quasi modes play an important role in the upper-troposphere dynamics. A retrieval algorithm for processing multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) data from clear and partially cloudy days is described and validated. This method, while complementary to the Langley approach, uses consistency between the direct normal and diffuse horizontal measurements combined with a regression technique to simultaneously retrieve daily time series of column mean aerosol particle size, aerosol optical depth, NO[sub 2] , and ozone amounts along with the instrument's calibration constants. Comparison with the traditional Langley calibration method demonstrates two advantages of the approach described here: greater calibration stability and a decreased sensitivity of retrievals to calibration errors.
