This article explores intersections between the author's process of making art and the analytic relationship. The author makes correlations between witnessing a deeply moving impressionist painting, engaging in Jung's method of active imagination, and the experience of reverie and opening to the imagination in the clinical relationship. Opening to the unconscious, and relating consciously to what emerges, is an art and a dance that involves the capacity to play. When there are unconscious and conscious meetings, a creative process ensues and can constellate what Jung called the transcendent function, a process that often catalyzes personal transformation. The possibility of non-regressive adult play therapy as a treatment for bipolar artists is explored via the peculiar case of the poet Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), analyzed by Sigmund Freud in Vienna in the early part of 1933. Notes kept by H.D. during the analysis, a 1944 memoir for a London periodical, and her collected letters form a case study. Freud is shown to abandon psychoanalytic treatment for H.D. in favor of a play therapy based in the psychology of Alfred Adler. The myth of the twins Artemis and Apollo illuminates the deep structure and dynamics of her treatment. An examination of her first session and four subsequent dreams shows a brother-sister transference that initiates the mother into the sibling hoard as the healing factor. Empathy, regression, and interpretation are eschewed in favor of spirited play, culture creation, and a cooperation of consciences. A quick comparison with Jung's individuation shows deep parallels in the two cases. Catherine MacCoun's book On Becoming an Alchemist offers practical guidance to anyone wanting to learn and apply alchemical principles. She enlightens and surprises us by sharing how alchemy isn't something left to the past but is, instead, a treasure-trove of knowledge that can help in our daily struggles. Her book brings Jung's alchemical work into the everyday world. Readable, engaging, and enlightening, MacCoun's text reveals how alchemical operations can be used to transform such "inferior states" as desire into devotion, vulnerability into compassion, and territoriality into integrity. The downside of her book is a lack of differentiation between magic and alchemy, with the two words used at times interchangeably. Whereas magic has to do with control of supernatural forces through the agency of will, alchemy works through love; one seeks to command change, the other to facilitate the natural flow of life. Because the book conflates alchemy and magic, it does not discern the difference between cause and effect. The magic of alchemy is a felt experience, not a causal agent. Despite this lack of distinction, wisdom shines through in MacCoun's deftly worded description of the Great Work. There are many obstacles on the road of individuation. Remaining true to oneself is one of the most difficult, especially when critics try to tear you down. Occasionally a rare individual appears who is misunderstood because he is far ahead of his time. Paracelsus is such a man. Not only did he resist falling under the pressures put on him by physicians who stubbornly adhered to antiquated medical traditions, but he vehemently struck back. Historian Bruce Moran gives us an excellent biography of this iconoclastic man who changed the direction of metallurgic alchemy into a new form of medicinal healing, iatrochemistry. Jung celebrated Paracelsus whom he described as having "created a psychological empirical healing science." Paracelsus's ideas were the inchoate principles of analytic psychology that took another five centuries to blossom. I had the chilling and haunting experience of hearing a firsthand account of the scene in Uvalde shortly after the shooting of the school children and teachers by Salvador Ramos. Shedding light on Jung's long-standing interest in rituals and processes of death and rebirth, which culminated in his 1932 Ravenna vision, the second part of this article retraces Jung's earliest references to alchemy in his published writings, from the early 1920s to 1932. The "Maid of Desolation," driven by matricidal heroic thinking, is flooding our collective consciousness by way of the coronavirus, an ethical wakeup call that holds not only unfathomable tragedy but also the possibility of transformation and rebirth. Shifting to another way of being requires that patriarchal consciousness undergo a sacrifice, an ego death. Jung makes three major psychological shifts in his process of individuation: this article offers a closer look at each turning point as a guide for how to submit to the death of our national exceptionalistic ego and shift into another way of being. If enough individuals have had that transformative experience within themselves, then they become seeds sown in the collective psyche, which can promote the unification of the collective psyche as a whole. The quest for the monomyth rakes in an unlikely candidate in Confucius, China's great sage and moral teacher. However, his brief biography turns out to parallel the call to the collective hero's journey in stage progression as well as in psychic immersion. Why then did Confucius cut to the quick, whereas the rest of the world told elaborate tales to deliver the same message? A possible answer comes in the prehistorical responses to perennial questions and problems of existence. The Seven Sermons to the Dead provides what Jung called the "supreme meaning" of his opus, which is the reconciliation of opposites. However, his choice of a Pleroma in the Sermons that consists of both fullness and nothingness hints at a deeper meaning veiling a mystical vision he must have had but never revealed. In choosing to follow Basilides's concept of a Pleroma, the deeper meaning, as asserted in this paper, is divine self-reflection: making the purpose of individuation to become an instrument through which the divine can witness its own creation. It was not until Answer to Job that Jung referred to man as being the "instrument into which God enters to attain self-reflection" but that mystical vision is exposed in the Sermons and, therefore, informed his later work. Roberto Chavez: Paintings and Drawings (January 23-February 23, 2013) at Notre Dame de Namur University's Wiegand Gallery in Belmont presented a varied collection of multicultural influences and styles. Chavez's work is impressively universal and compelling and, as such, exhibits many of the ways that the images of the collective unconscious are experienced through personal perception and projection. His subject matter ranges from the delightfully attractive to the horrifically explicit. His styles range from Realism to Surrealism, combining Asian with European with Chicano motifs. The archetypes of the persona, the shadow, and their synthesis in the alchemical process is discussed in terms ofJung's own writings about the philosophical "egg," a powerful symbol of the wholeness reached through the "detached consciousness" of the individuation process.
