For many ophthalmic surgical procedures a well-equipped operating microscope is indispensable. However, it is not necessary to use the microscope routinely in the removal of normal senile cataracts. While there are advantages, particularly as regards accurate suture placement, there are also disadvantages.

The gelatinous cystic nevus is both histologically and biomicroscopically a very typical form of conjunctival venus. A report on two cases serves to illustrate the indications for an operative procedure. In one case an incisional biopsy was performed, in the other an excisional biopsy. In neither case was there any histological evidence of malignancy.

The racemose hemangioma sometimes resembles the retinal angiogliomatosis and the retinal and pigment epithelium hamartoma. Dirty gray opacity and hypervascularity of the juxtapapillary retina are the common symptoms, the variety of the hypervascularity as well as the condition of the pigment epithelium make the different features.

In a case of band-shaped keratopathy chemical solution of the opacity failed but it proved easy to remove Bowman's membrane by grasping it with a forceps and pulling it off. As a result the cornea became clear and vision improved up to 6/7ths.

Dust-like opacities of the vitreous body are the main feature of all types of intermediary uveitis. In addition recurrent vitreous hemorrhages occasionally occur. They mark the vasoproliferative form of the inflammation and originate from different regions of the posterior segment of the eye; their distribution sometimes enables conclusions to be drawn concerning the site of the vasoproliferation.

Meticulous examination of vitreal and retinal structures in the area of dialysis provides the basis for classification of the different kinds of dehiscences; also, conclusions can be drawn concerning pathogenesis and prognosis. Findings are discussed.

Circumscribed areas of retinoschisis along or anterior to the Equator occur mainly in elderly subjects. Diagnosis is based on biomicroscopic criteria.
