Several gallium-based liquid metal alloys are liquid at room temperature. As 'liquid', such alloys have a low viscosity and a high surface tension while as 'metal', they have high thermal and electrical conductivities, similar to mercury. However, unlike mercury, these liquid metal alloys have low toxicity and a negligible vapor pressure, rendering them much safer. In comparison to mercury, the distinguishing feature of these alloys is the rapid formation of a self-limiting atomically thin layer of gallium oxide over their surface when exposed to oxygen. This oxide layer changes many physical and chemical properties of gallium alloys, including their interfacial and rheological properties, which can be employed and modulated for various applications in microfluidics. Injecting liquid metal into microfluidic structures has been extensively used to pattern and encapsulate highly deformable and reconfigurable electronic devices including electrodes, sensors, antennas, and interconnects. Likewise, the unique features of liquid metals have been employed for fabricating miniaturized microfluidic components including pumps, valves, heaters, and electrodes. In this review, we discuss liquid metal enabled microfluidic components, and highlight their desirable attributes including simple fabrication, facile integration, stretchability, reconfigurability, and low power consumption, with promising applications for highly integrated microfluidic systems.

Increasing the thermal conductivity of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) based microfluidics is an important issue for the thermal management of hot spots produced by embedding electronic circuits in such systems. This paper presents a solution for enhancing the thermal conductivity of such PDMS based microfluidics by introducing thermally conductive alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles, forming PDMS/Al2O3 nanocomposites. The materials are fully characterized for different concentrations of Al2O3 in PDMS for experiments which are conducted at different flow rates. Our results suggest that incorporation of Al2O3 nanoparticles at 10% w/w in the PDMS based nanocomposite significantly enhances the heat conduction from hot spots by enhancing the thermal conductivity, while maintaining the flexibility and decreasing the specific heat capacity of the developed materials. This proof-of-concept study offers potential for a practical solution for the cooling of future embedded electronic systems.

Assembled nanofin heat sinks, nanostructures which are formed via external forces in a cooling microfluidic to remove heat from hot spots, are a new concept that has recently been introduced. In this work, we investigate nanofin structures formed by CrO2 and Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles and compare their performance. Thermal imaging is used for comparison of three cases including: (i) DI water as the coolant liquid, (ii) suspension of magnetic particles in DI water, and (iii) suspension of magnetic particles in DI water in the presence of a magnetic field. For each case, the experiments are conducted at three different flow rates of 10, 40 and 120 μl min(-1). Our results suggest that the high thermal conductivity of the nanofins composed of CrO2 significantly enhances the heat exchange across the microchannel. The proof-of-concept magnetophoretic system can offer a practical solution for the cooling of future compact electronics.

We present the thermal analysis of liquid containing Al(2)O(3) nanoparticles in a microfluidic platform using an infrared camera. The small dimensions of the microchannel along with the low flow rates (less than 120 μl min(-1)) provide very low Reynolds numbers of less than 17.5, reflecting practical parameters for a microfluidic cooling platform. The heat analysis of nanofluids has never been investigated in such a regime, due to the deficiencies of conventional thermal measurement systems. The infrared camera allows non-contact, three dimensional and high resolution capability for temperature profiling. The system was studied at different w/w concentrations of thermally conductive Al(2)O(3) nanoparticles and the experiments were in excellent agreement with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

A microfluidic dielectrophoresis platform consisting of curved microelectrodes was developed and integrated with a Raman spectroscopy system. The electrodes were patterned on a quartz substrate, which has insignificant Raman response, and integrated with a microfluidic channel that was imprinted in poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We will show that this novel integrated system can be efficiently used for the determination of suspended particle types and the direct mapping of their spatial concentrations. We will also illustrate the system's unique advantages over conventional optical systems. Nanoparticles of tungsten trioxide (WO(3)) and polystyrene were used in the investigations, as they are Raman active and can be homogeneously suspended in water.
