The article discusses an observational study designed to assess the risk of iatrogenic problems in hospital neonatal units. Medical errors have caused many deaths and injuries in hospitals. The authors propose that a voluntary reporting system of all iatrogenic incidents could improve patient care. The study required monitoring of patients in the neonatal unit of a hospital in Marseille, France and the use of a voluntary incident reporting system. Statistical analysis of event reports revealed that many of the iatrogenic incidents, such as nosocomial infections and cutaneous injuries, could be prevented
