This paper focuses on the evaluation of temporal and spatial propagations of impulse waves using 3D numerical simulation-based models for a potential landslide area in the Tersun Dam reservoir, Northeast Turkey. The topographical model was created using Stereo Lithography files, and a drift-flux model was used to simulate the landslides. The wave generation was simulated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The Drift-Flux approach was selected, and a renormalization group-based k-ε turbulence model was used to create a fluid–solid coupled model. The results show that a 16.5-m impulse wave is created as a result of sliding material hitting the water at a velocity of 16.4 m/s. The wave will reach the opposite shore in 27.4 s, and the run-up height will reach up to 48.8 m. As the wave, with an average velocity of 11.6 m/s in the reservoir, propagates toward the dam body, its height will decrease, and a 3.7-m-high wave will hit the dam in 155 s. A validation analysis performed using empirical equations and laboratory model tests indicates small differences in the results. The main reason for these differences is that the evaluation of wave properties is independent of the type of mass movement in empirical methods. A case study of a debris slide (estimated volume of about 35,000 m) is described in this paper. This slide occurred in April 2009 in the North Western Italian Alps (Aosta valley) and damaged the SR25 road along the Valgrisenche valley. Ground investigations started with severe safety and logistic issues being posed. Given the need to open as soon as possible the road, the design of the landslide stabilization works was carried out using a 'design as you go' approach. The stabilization measures were conceived to be flexible in order to allow for changes and integration during construction, in line with the progressive refinement of the geological-geotechnical slope model being developed. Back analysis by means of the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and the finite element method (FEM) was used. Groundwater level rise following heavy rainfall and spring snow melting was found to be the main cause of the debris slide. The stabilization works were designed by using both the LEM and FEM methods. The stability conditions of the engineered slope were assessed based on the available performance monitoring data. The Dumre Besi landslide is one of the largest and most problematic failures on the Mugling-Narayanghat Highway in central Nepal. Though it was triggered by the monsoon rain of 2003, geological structures and rock weathering have played a key role in its initiation and further aggravation. The slide is also controlled to some extent by the groundwater and rugged topography with high slope angles. The landslide zone comprises thinly laminated light grey siltstone with numerous crosscutting quartz veins, grey metasandstone (quartzite), bluish grey to white phyllite, black carbonaceous slate, and dolomite. A thrust fault passes through the centre of the landslide, creating a thick deposit of loose, weathered rock material, and the fault has developed a very thick shattered zone where weathering is very intense. Using field and laboratory analyses, the rocks in the landslide zone can be divided into five zones based on the severity of weathering: none, slight, moderate, severe, and complete. Laboratory analyses showed that the chemically weathered rocks are significantly rich in smectite and vermiculite. Out of these, smectite is the most critical one, as it swells when wet. The formation mechanism of the clay minerals was analysed by various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and thin-section analysis, and it was found that most of them were derived from weathering of rock. The clay minerals significantly reduced the rock strength and facilitated the extensive failure of Dumre Besi. The wide fault zone with deeply weathered and clay-rich debris is also responsible for the formation of debris flows in the monsoon season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landslides with a shallow and complex bedrock layer, where bedrock topography affects the stability of the slide, are a widespread phenomenon. The current methods for evaluating such landslides include conventional in situ methods and array-based geophysical methods. However, these methods are not capable of characterizing the complete spatial extent of the bedrock layer cost-effectively and are difficult to conduct for steep slopes. Therefore, in this study, microtremor horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (MHVSR) is proposed as an effective tool when used in conjunction with other methods to improve our understanding of the landslide. In this study, the method is used to make a tight grid of MHVSR measurements within the landslide. Using this method, a 3D image of bedrock topography can be created over a larger spatial extent to reveal the potential critical landslide zones. This method is employed for two active landslides that have recently experienced considerable movements. Using the MHVSR, several bowl-shaped features were detected in the bedrock layer, which were not detected using conventional invasive in situ methods. These features play a key role in landslide behavior as they can trap water and create a fully saturated soft zone within the critical slide. Missing such key features in the geologic model of the landslide can lead to errors in the slope stability models and cost overruns in rehabilitation efforts. The grid pattern MHVSR method used in this study offers a simple, rapid, and cost-effective tool for landslide site characterization for sites with shallow and complex bedrock topography.
