Landslides are among the most common and dangerous natural hazards in mountainous regions that can cause damage to properties and loss of lives. Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) is a critical tool for preventing or mitigating the negative impacts of landslides. Although many previous studies have employed various statistical methods to produce quantitative maps of the landslide susceptibility index (LSI) based on inventories of past landslides and contributing factors, they are mostly ad hoc to a specific area and their success has been hindered by the lack of a methodology that could produce the right mapping units at proper scale and by the lack of a general framework for objectively accounting for the differing contribution of various preparatory factors. This paper addresses these issues by integrating the geomorphon and geographical detector methods into LSM to improve its performance. The geomorphon method, an innovative pattern recognition approach for identifying landform elements based on the line of sight concept, is adapted to delineate ridge lines and valley lines to form slope units at self-adjusted spatial scale suitable for LSM. The geographical detector method, a spatial variance analysis method, is integrated to objectively assign the weights of contributing factors for LSM. Applying the new integrated approach to I-Lan, Taiwan produced very significant improvement in LSI mapping performance than a previous model, especially in highly susceptible areas. Parameter calibration is one of the most problematic phases of numerical modeling since the choice of parameters affects the model's reliability as far as the physical problems being studied are concerned. In some cases, laboratory tests or physical models evaluating model parameters cannot be completed and other strategies must be adopted; numerical models reproducing debris flow propagation are one of these. Since scale problems affect the reproduction of real debris flows in the laboratory or specific tests used to determine rheological parameters, calibration is usually carried out by comparing in a subjective way only a few parameters, such as the heights of soil deposits calculated for some sections of the debris flows or the distance traveled by the debris flows using the values detected in situ after an event has occurred. Since no automatic or objective procedure has as yet been produced, this paper presents a numerical procedure based on the application of a statistical algorithm, which makes it possible to define, without ambiguities, the best parameter set. The procedure has been applied to a study case for which digital elevation models of both before and after an important event exist, implicating that a good database for applying the method was available. Accurate and timely landslide mapping plays a critical role in emergency response and long-term land use planning. Deep learning–based methods represented by convolutional neural networks have been widely exploited in automatic landslide detection for their outstanding capability of feature representation and end-to-end learning mode. Most of the recent deep learning–based studies used toll-access high-resolution imagery for landslide detection. Considering demands for the future large-scale landslide mapping, this study aims to develop a new deep learning–based method to detect landslides using medium-resolution imagery and digital elevation model (DEM) data which are free-access and covered globally. Firstly, a workflow for constructing the landslide dataset is developed. Then, we design a semantic segmentation model to learn deep features and generate per-pixel landslide predictions. Specifically, the proposed network has a dual-encoder architecture with feature fusion to hierarchically represent deep features from the optical bands and DEM data. We also employ a self-attention module in the decoder of the proposed network to improve the performance. Experiments on two regions demonstrate that our method achieves the best F1 score of 79.24%, outperforming SegNet, U-Net, and Attention U-Net, the models popularly used in the semantic segmentation–based landslide detection. The proposed method may have an application potential in disaster risk assessment and post-disaster reconstruction and provide a technical reference for the large-scale landslide mapping in the future. Landslides are frequent all around the world, causing tremendous loss to human beings. Rapid access to the locations where landslides occur is crucial for emergency response. Most researches in landslide detection from remotely sensed images focus on small regions, which are handpicked. That makes it easy to distinguish landslides from background objects, but hard to apply in practical cases. The complicated non-landslide background pixels increase the difficulty to accurately detect landslides. In this study, we propose a technique framework to remove non-landslide background pixels for national Nepal using 12 Landsat8 images and digital elevation model (DEM). DEM is useful in removing flat areas, where landslides are less likely to occur. The framework consists of three sections: image enhancement, landslide proposal extraction, and detection model setup. Bare land, including landslides, is enhanced using vegetation index after haze/cloud re-movement. Later, calculate connective contours and propose them as potential regions that may contain landslides. For each proposal, calculate texture feature and build detection model using one of the Landsat8 images, which is further applied on other images to check its applicability and robustness. The assessment shows that the method is able to remove 99% of the background pixels in the scale of national Nepal, taking over billions of pixels. Even there is still much to do to achieve high accurate landslide detection results from large-scale images, the experiment validates a strong potential applicability for the proposed method in large-scale landslide-related analysis. Landslides are a major category of natural disasters, causing loss of lives, livelihoods and property. The critical roles played by triggering (such as extreme rainfall and earthquakes), and intrinsic factors (such as slope steepness, soil properties and lithology) have previously successfully been recognized and quantified using a variety of qualitative, quantitative and hybrid methods in a wide range of study sites. However, available data typically do not allow to investigate the effect that earlier landslides have on intrinsic factors and hence on follow-up landslides. Therefore, existing methods cannot account for the potentially complex susceptibility changes caused by landslide events. In this study, we used a substantially different alternative approach to shed light on the potential effect of earlier landslides using a multi-temporal dataset of landslide occurrence containing 17 time slices. Spatial overlap and the time interval between landslides play key roles in our work. We quantified the degree to which landslides preferentially occur in locations where landslides occurred previously, how long such an effect is noticeable, and how landslides are spatially associated over time. We also investigated whether overlap with previous landslides causes differences in landslide geometric properties. We found that overlap among landslides demonstrates a clear legacy effect (path dependency) that has influence on the landslide affected area. Landslides appear to cause greater susceptibility for follow-up landslides over a period of about 10 years. Follow-up landslides are on average larger and rounder than landslides that do not follow earlier slides. The effect of earlier landslides on follow-up landslides has implications for understanding of the landslides evolution and the assessment of landslide susceptibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landslide inventories are the most important data source for landslide process, susceptibility, hazard, and risk analyses. The objective of this study was to identify an effective method for mapping a landslide inventory for a large study area (19,186 km) from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) digital terrain model (DTM) derivatives. This inventory should in particular be optimized for statistical susceptibility modeling of earth and debris slides. We compared the mapping of a representative set of landslide bodies with polygons (earth and debris slides, earth flows, complex landslides, and areas with slides) and a substantially complete set of earth and debris slide main scarps with points by visual interpretation of LiDAR DTM derivatives. The effectiveness of the two mapping methods was estimated by evaluating the requirements on an inventory used for statistical susceptibility modeling and their fulfillment by our mapped inventories. The resulting landslide inventories improved the knowledge on landslide events in the study area and outlined the heterogeneity of the study area with respect to landslide susceptibility. The obtained effectiveness estimate demonstrated that none of our mapped inventories are perfect for statistical landslide susceptibility modeling. However, opposed to mapping polygons, mapping earth and debris slides with a point in the main scarp were most effective for statistical susceptibility modeling within large study areas. Therefore, earth and debris slides were mapped with points in the main scarp in entire Lower Austria. The advantages, drawbacks, and effectiveness of landslide mapping on the basis of LiDAR DTM derivatives compared to other imagery and techniques were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
