Micro- and nanotexturing on hard biomaterials have shown advantages for tissue engineering and antifouling applications. However, a growing number of studies have also shown that texturing may cause an increase in friction, demanding further research on the tribological effects of texturing under physiological conditions. This study investigates the tribological effects of micro- and nanopore patterns on hard hydrophilic silicon sliding against soft hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) immersed in aqueous liquids with various viscosities, simulating the sliding of a textured implant surface against soft tissues. The experimental results show that silicon surfaces with pore textures at both micro- and nanoscale feature sizes confer a higher coefficient of friction (COF) than an untextured one. It is attributed to the texture's edge effect caused by the periodic pore patterns between the two sliding objects with a large difference in material stiffness. For the same solid area fraction, nanopored surfaces show a higher COF than micropored surfaces because of the significantly higher texture edge length per unit area. For micropored surfaces with a similar length of texture edge length per unit area, the COF increases more significantly with the increase in pore size because of the greater stress at the rims of the larger pores. The COFs of both micro- and nanoscale pores generally decrease from ∼10 to 0.1 with an increase in the surrounding aqueous viscosity, indicating the transition from a boundary lubrication to a mixed lubrication regime while mostly remaining in boundary lubrication. In contrast, the COF of an untextured surface decreases from ∼1 to 0.01, indicating that it mostly remains in the mixed lubrication regime while showing the tendency toward hydrodynamic lubrication. Compared to a hydrophilic hard probe sliding against a textured hydrophobic soft substrate, the hydrophobic soft probe sliding against a textured hydrophilic hard substrate produces a significantly higher COF under similar physiological conditions due to the larger edge effect.

Attractive (non-self-assembling) aqueous cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions were topologically tailored into isotropic gels through the surface grafting of dialkyl groups. We thus focus on the influence of CNC concentration, including for pristine CNC, surface linker branching, branching degree, and the influence of side group size and branch-on-branch surface-grafted groups. The resulting mobility and strength of interaction in particle-particle interaction mediated by the surface groups was investigated from a rheological point of view. The emphasis is on nonlinear material parameters from Fourier-transform rheology and stress decomposition analysis. The results show that nonlinear material parameters are more sensitive than linear viscoelastic parameters to the onset of weakly interconnected networks in pristine CNC isotropic suspensions. All surface-modified CNC suspensions resulted in isotropic gels. The nonlinear material parameters were found to be broadly sensitive to CNC concentration, branching, degree of branching and surface-grafted linkers’ length. However, the length of the grafted chains and the degree of branching were the primary factors influencing the nonlinear material response. Furthermore, the results showed evidence of two strain amplitude ranges with distinct nonlinear signatures that could be attributed to the disruption of weak network connection points and to distortions of more dense (aggregate) network regions, respectively.

This work aims at preparing and characterizing a versatile multifunctional platform enabling the immobilization of macromolecules on a titanium surface by robust covalent grafting. Functionalized titanium is widely used in the biomedical field to improve its properties. Despite its high biocompatibility and osteointegrability, titanium implants are not very stable in the long term due to the onset of inflammation and bacterial infections. The proposed method allows the superficial insertion of three different organic linkers to be used as anchors for the attachment of biopolymers or bioactive molecules. This strategy used green solvents and is a good alternative to the proposed classic methods that employ organic solvents. The uniformly modified surfaces were characterized by micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS). The latter made it possible to assess the orientation of the linker molecules with respect to the titanium surface. To test the efficiency of the linkers, two polymers (alginate and 2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA)), with the potential ability to increase biocompatibility, were covalently attached to the titanium surfaces. The obtained results are a good starting point for the realization of stable polymeric coatings permanently bonded to the surface that could be used to extend the life of biomedical implants.
