A generalized approach to determine the complete distribution of macropores, mesopores, and micropores from argon adsorption and mercury porosimetry is developed and validated for advanced zeolite catalysts with hierarchically structured pore systems in powder and shaped forms. Rather than using a fragmented approach of simple overlays from individual techniques, a unified approach that utilizes a kernel constructed from model isotherms and model intrusion curves is used to calculate the complete pore size distribution and the total pore volume of the material. An added benefit of a single full-range pore size distribution is that the cumulative pore area and the area distribution are also obtained without the need for additional modeling. The resulting complete pore size distribution and the kernel accurately model both the adsorption isotherm and the mercury porosimetry. By bridging the data analysis of two primary characterization tools, this methodology fills an existing gap in the library of familiar methods for porosity assessment in the design of materials with multilevel porosity for novel technological applications.

Anisotropic deformation of polystyrene particles in an oxygenated (O2/Ar) plasma is observed for radio frequency (rf) plasma and inductively coupled plasma (ICP). A facile model based on a ratio of completely isotropic and completely anisotropic etching is presented to describe the anisotropy of the etching process and is implemented to determine the height of the spheroid-shaped polystyrene particles. In our systems, we find the plasma etching to be 54% isotropic in the rf plasma and 79% isotropic in the ICP. With this model, the maximum material deposition thickness for nanofabrication with plasma-etched nanosphere lithography or colloid lithography can be predicted. Moreover, the etching of polystyrene particles in an oxygenated plasma is investigated versus the etching time, gas flow, gas composition, temperature, substrate material, and particle size. The results of this study allow precise shape tuning during the fabrication of nanostructured surfaces with size-dependent properties for bionic, medical, and photonic applications.

Fabrication of organic thin films with highly dispersed inorganic nanoparticles is a very challenging topic. In this work, a new approach that combines electron-induced molecular self-assembly with simultaneous nanoparticle formation by room temperature electron reduction was developed to prepare peptide thin films with highly dispersed noble metal nanoparticles. Argon glow discharge was employed as the resource of electrons. The peptide motif KLVFF (Aβ16-20) self-assembled into two-dimensional membranes under the influence of hydrated electrons, while the metal ions in solution can be simultaneously reduced by electrons to form nanoparticles. Our TEM imaging reveals that metal nanoparticles were well-distributed in the resulting peptide thin films. Our results also suggest that the size of metal nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the initial concentration of the metal ion. This simple approach can be viewed as a promising strategy to create hybrid thin films that integrate functional inorganics into biomolecule scaffolds.

A stable and improved control of the wettability of textiles was obtained by using a coating of diamond like carbon (DLC) films on cotton by PECVD. By controlling different plasma pretreatments of argon, oxygen, and hydrogen on the cotton fibers' surface, we have shown that the pretreatments had a significant impact on wettability behavior resulting from an induced nanoscale roughness combined with an incorporation of selected functional groups. Upon subsequent deposition of diamond like carbon (DLC) films, the cotton fibers yield to a highly controlled chemical stability and hydrophobic state and could be used for self-cleaning applications. By controlling the nature of the plasma pretreatment we have shown that the oxygen plasma pretreatment was more effective than the argon and hydrogen for the superhydrophilic/ultra hydrophobic properties. The chemical and morphological changes of the cotton fibers under different treatments were characterized using X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy, AFM, and water contact angle measurements. The mechanism underlying the water-repellent properties of the cotton fibers provides a new and innovative pathway into the development of a range of advanced self-cleaning textiles.

The use of colloidal crystals with various primary particle sizes as templates leads to the formation of three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous (3DOm) carbons containing spherical pores with tailorable pore size and extremely high pore volumes. We present a comprehensive structural characterization of these novel carbons by using nitrogen (77.4 K) and argon (87.3 K) adsorption coupled with the application of novel, dedicated quenched solid density functional theory (QSDFT) methods which assume correctly the underlying spherical pore geometry and also the underlying adsorption mechanism. The observed adsorption isotherms are of Type IV with Type H1-like hysteresis, despite the fact that pore blocking affects the position of the desorption branch. This follows also from detailed, advanced scanning hysteresis experiments which not only allow one to identify the underlying mechanisms of hysteresis, but also provide complementary information about the texture of these unique porous materials. This work addresses the problem of pore size analysis of novel, ordered porous carbons and highlights the importance of hysteresis scanning experiments for textural analysis of the pore network.

The intriguing hysteretic adsorption-desorption behavior of certain microporous metal-organic frameworks (MMOFs) has received considerable attention and is often associated with a gate-opening (GO) effect. Here, the hysteretic adsorption of N(2) and Ar to Zn(2)(bpdc)(2)(bpee) (bpdc = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate; bpee = 1,2-bipyridylethene) shows a pronounced effect of allowed experimental time at 77 and 87 K. When the time allowed is on the order of minutes for N(2) at 77 K, no adsorption is observed, whereas times in excess of 60 h is required to achieve appreciable adsorption up to a limiting total coverage. Given sufficient time, the total uptake for N(2) and Ar converged at similar reduced temperatures, but the adsorption of Ar was significantly more rapid than that of N(2), an observation that can be described by activated configurational diffusion. N(2) and Ar both exhibited discontinuous stepped adsorption isotherms with significant hysteresis, features that were dependent upon the allowed time. The uptake of H(2) at 77 K was greater than for both N(2) and Ar but showed no discontinuity in the isotherm, and hysteretic effects were much less pronounced. N(2) and Ar adsorption data can be described by an activated diffusion process, with characteristic times leading to activation energies of 6.7 and 12 kJ/mol. Fits of H(2) adsorption data led to activation energies in the range 2-7 kJ/mol at low coverage and nonactivated diffusion at higher coverage. An alternate concentration-dependent diffusion model is presented to describe the stepwise adsorption behavior, which is observed for N(2) and Ar but not for H(2). Equilibrium is approached very slowly for adsorption to molecularly sized pores at low temperature, and structural change (gate opening), although it may occur, is not required to explain the observations., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

We present equations to calculate the differential and integral enthalpy changes of adsorption for their use in Monte Carlo simulation. Adsorption of a system of N molecules, subject to an external potential energy, is viewed as one of transferring these molecules from a reference gas phase (state 1) to the adsorption system (state 2) at the same temperature and equilibrium pressure (same chemical potential). The excess amount adsorbed is the difference between N and the hypothetical amount of gas occupying the accessible volume of the system at the same density as the reference gas. The enthalpy change is a state function, which is defined as the difference between the enthalpies of state 2 and state 1, and the isosteric heat is defined as the negative of the derivative of this enthalpy change with respect to the excess amount of adsorption. It is suitable to determine how the system behaves for a differential increment in the excess phase adsorbed under subcritical conditions. For supercritical conditions, use of the integral enthalpy of adsorption per particle is recommended since the isosteric heat becomes infinite at the maximum excess concentration. With these unambiguous definitions we derive equations which are applicable for a general case of adsorption and demonstrate how they can be used in a Monte Carlo simulation. We apply the new equations to argon adsorption at various temperatures on a graphite surface to illustrate the need to use the correct equation to describe isosteric heat of adsorption., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

In a recent paper [J. Chem. Phys. 2007, 127, 154701] a multiscale approach was introduced which allowed calculation of adsorption/desorption hysteresis for fluid confined in a single mesoporous, heterogeneous tubular pore. The main interest in using such an approach is that it allows one to reconcile a molecular simulation approach generally limited to the nanometer scale (atomistic description of the confined fluid and pore roughness) with the much larger scale (micrometer) relevant to understand the complexity of adsorption/desorption hysteresis (the numerous metastable states in the hysteresis loop are a consequence of the large-scale disorder in the porous material). In this paper, this multiscale approach is used to study adsorption phenomena in mesoporous models made of a collection of disordered, noninterconnected tubular pores, as MCM-41 or porous silicon. A double distribution is introduced: one to characterize the disorder in a given pore, and the other to characterize the disorder between the pores. We consider two distribution shapes: Gaussian and uniform truncated and two cases of pores open at one or both ends. These models are expected to cover a wide variety of real materials made of independent pores, as MCM-41 and oxidized porous silicon. A large variety of hysteresis shapes is obtained, ranging from almost parallel adsorption/desorption branches typical of MCM-41 adsorption to triangular hysteresis typical of porous silicon. The structure of the metastable states inside the hysteresis (scanning adsorption/desorption curves) is also examined. The results are expected to be useful to experimentalists who want to infer pore structure and level of disorder from experimental adsorption/desorption experiments.

In the present study, silver metal nanofibers have been successfully prepared by using the electrospinning technique. Silver nanofibers have been produced by electrospinning a sol-gel consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) and silver nitrate. The dried nanofiber mats have been calcined at 850 degrees C in an argon atmosphere. The produced nanofibers do have distinct plasmon resonance compared with the reported silver nanoparticles. Contrary to the introduced shapes of silver nanoparticles, the nanofibers have a blue-shifted plasmon resonance at 330 nm. Moreover, the optical properties study indicated that the synthesized nanofibers have two band gap energies of 0.75 and 2.34 eV. An investigation of the electrical conductivity behavior of the obtained nanofibers shows thermal hystersis. These privileged physical features greatly widen the applications of the prepared nanofibers in various fields.

This paper describes a novel method of fabricating three-dimensional (3-D) curved microstructures with continuous relief through controlled argon gas expansion into a photocurable resin. A microstructured stamp is placed on top of a nonwetting photopolymerizable liquid resin. The setup is heated, and the argon gas in the blind holes of the stamp expands. The expanded gas displaces the resin at the mouth of the microcavities to form 3-D curved indentations in the liquid resin which is subsequently rapidly solidified by photopolymerization. By changing the duration of the preheating, different curvatures can be produced. Arrays of homogeneous 3-D curved microstructures having different cross-sectional geometries and heights were fabricated using various shapes of the blind holes and preheating times, respectively. As a demonstration of applications, high-quality and uniform polydimethylsiloxane microlens arrays were produced. In addition, thorough investigation was carried out to study the factors influencing the fabricated 3-D curved microstructures. Curved microstructures with diameters as small as 2 microm were demonstrated. A simple model was developed, and such a model allows for predicting the curvatures of indentations with different preheating times. It has been found that the predicted curvatures are in good agreement with experimental data.

Despite widespread evidence of the influence of dissolved air on hydrophobic interaction, the mechanisms of observed effects are still unknown. Although some experiments indicate that adsorbed gases can modify the structure of water next to hydrophobic surfaces, gas effects on measured forces have been observed only at large surface separations. Gas-specific depletion of water at a hydrophobic surface has been detected but was not reproduced in subsequent measurements. We use computer simulations to study short-ranged hydrophobic attraction in the absence and presence of dissolved gas and monitor gas adsorption at molecular resolution inaccessible in experiments. Although we observe a significant accumulation of dissolved gases at hydrophobic surfaces, even in supersaturated gas solutions surface concentrations remain too low to induce any significant change in the local structure of water and short-range surface forces. We present direct calculations of the hydrophobic force between model hydrocarbon plates at separations between 1.5 and 4 nm. Although stronger, the calculated solvation force has a similar decay rate as deduced from recent surface force apparatus measurements at a somewhat lower contact angle. Within the statistical uncertainty, short-range attraction is not affected by the presence of dissolved nitrogen, even in supersaturated solution with a gas fugacity as high as 30 atm. Comparisons of the adsorption behavior of N2, O2, CO2, and Ar reveal similar features in contrast to the peculiar suppression of water depletion reported for an Ar solution in a neutron reflectivity experiment. Our calculations reveal a notable difference between pathways to the capillary evaporation of pure water and gas-phase nucleation in confined supersaturated gas solutions.

The decomposition and detoxification of compounds are of great interest in environmental protection and defense-related areas. We report the generation of gaseous excited species by scanning atmospheric radio frequency (rf) plasma and their reactions with two representative organophosphorus nerve agents, paraoxon and parathion, deposited on solid surfaces. The excited gaseous species generated in the Ar and Ar/O2 plasma were identified as atomic oxygen, OH radical, and excited nitrogen molecule from optical emission spectroscopy analysis. The reaction of these species with paraoxon and parathion was monitored with reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy and compared with the decomposition by UV irradiation and UV/ozone treatments. The decomposition products of the atmospheric rf plasma treatment were similar to those of the UV/ozone treatment. The atomic oxygen and excited OH species generated by the plasma appear to be responsible for the oxidation of paraoxon and parathion. The plasma-induced decomposition process was much faster and more efficient than the UV/ozone process. The complete detoxification of paraoxon and parathion upon a short time exposure to the Ar/O2 plasma was confirmed by the Drosophila melanogaster culture test.

This paper reports a molecular simulation and experimental study on the adsorption and condensation of simple fluids in mesoporous micelle-templated silicas MCM-41, MCM-48, and SBA-15. MCM-41 is described as a regular cylindrical silica nanopore, while SBA-15 is assumed to be made up of cylindrical nanopores that are connected through lateral channels. The 3D-connected topology of MCM-48 is described using a gyroid periodic minimal surface. Argon adsorption at 77 K is calculated for the three materials using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Qualitative comparison with experiments for nitrogen adsorption in mesoporous micelle-templated silicas is made. The adsorption isotherm for SBA-15 resembles that for MCM-41. In particular, capillary condensation and evaporation are not affected by the presence of the connecting lateral channels. In contrast, the argon adsorption isotherm for MCM-48 departs from that for MCM-41 having the same pore size. While condensation in MCM-41 is a one-step process, filling of MCM-48 involves two successive jumps in the adsorbed amounts which correspond to condensation in different domains of the porosity. The condensation pressure for MCM-48 is larger than that for MCM-41. We attribute this result to the morphology of the MCM-48 surface (made up of both concave and convex regions) that differs from that for MCM-41 (concave only). Our results suggest that the pore connectivity affects pore filling when the size of the connections is comparable to that of the nanopores.

Surface modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was carried out via CF4 plasma treatment. The test PDMS used contains significant amounts of quartz and silica fillers, while the control material is the same PDMS with quartz removed by centrifugation. Fluorination accompanied with roughening was produced on both PDMS surfaces. With short plasma times (15 min or less), a macromolecular fluorocarbon layer was formed on the PDMS surfaces because of the dominant fluorination, leading to significant increase in F concentration, decrease of surface energy, and some roughening. With intermediate plasma times (15-30 min), dynamic balance between fluorination and ablation was achieved, leading to a plateau of the surface roughness, fluorine content, and [F-Si]/[F-C] ratio. At our longest investigated plasma time of 45 min, the plasma ablated the fluorinated covering layer on the PDMS surfaces, leading to significant increase in roughness and [F-Si]/[F-C] ratio and decrease of surface F concentration. The effect of additional quartz in the test PDMS on surface F concentration, [F-Si]/[F-C] ratio, and roughness was dramatic only when ablation was significant (i.e., 45 min). The obtained Teflon-like surface displays long-term stability as opposed to hydrophobic recovery of other plasma-treated PDMS surfaces to increase hydrophilicity. On the basis of the optimized plasma treatment time of 15 min, a microstructured PDMS mold was plasma treated and successfully used for multiple high-aspect-ratio (about 8) UV embossing of nonpolar polypropylene glycol diacrylate (PPGDA) resin.

A method for preparing a glass surface containing an ordered array of nanowells is described. These nanowell arrays are prepared via a plasma-etch method using a nanopore alumina film as the etch mask. A replica of the pore structure of the alumina mask is etched into the glass. We demonstrate that chemical information in the form of negatively charged latex nanoparticles can be selectively stored within these nanowells and not indiscriminately deposited on the surface surrounding the nanowells. To accomplish this, the chemistry of the glass surfaces within these nanowells (walls and bottoms) must be different from the chemistry of the surface surrounding the nanowells. Two different procedures were developed to make the inside vs. surrounding surface chemistries different. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to image the nanowells and, via friction-force measurements, to prove that the inner nanowell surfaces can be made chemically different from the surface surrounding the nanowells.

Isothermal adsorption of Ar on single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been studied at 77 and 87 K. The SWNTs have been grown by laser vaporization of a graphite pellet containing 0.6% (atomic) Ni/Co catalyst. The nanotubes have been prepared for argon adsorption measurements by prolonged outgassing of as-grown material in a vacuum at room temperature (295 K), at elevated temperatures of up to 475 K, and by oxidization for 2 h in dry air at 470 K. Formation of two condensed phases of Ar in the interior of SWNTs has been observed at 77 K. The low-density phase is formed at 155(5) microTorr, while the high-density phase, at 120(5) microTorr. At 87 K, only a single phase has been observed at 185(5) microTorr. Condensation at both 77 and 87 K appears to be the first-order phase transition. Onset of the quasi-one-dimensional linear (one-channel) phase and the quasi-two-dimensional monolayer (six-channel) phase formation on the external surface of bundles has been observed at 77 K near 0.0017 and 0.8 Torr, respectively, and at 87 K near 0.018 and 5 Torr, respectively. Isosteric heats of adsorption for the one-channel phase, the first external layer, and the second external layer have been determined to be equal to 137, 107, and 70 meV, respectively.

A low-energy Ar+ ion beam was used to modify the surface of a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) film. The modification reaction proceeded with or without oxygen gas injected during the irradiation. The surface functional groups of the modified PEEK were confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as increasing various oxygen-containing functional groups. The concentration of the functional groups varied rapidly with the irradiation time, reached a maximum value, and then slowly decreased. The surface morphology of PEEK was substantially changed by ion-beam irradiation. Surface smoothening occurred so that the surface roughness reached almost constant value after some irradiation time. The incorporation of functional groups on the PEEK surface and the surface topology change had opposite effects on the adhesion strength between PEEK and copper. Dominance of the former was evident because the lap-shear strength initially increased with the irradiation. The special surface features significantly enhanced the adhesion strength between the evaporated copper layer and the modified PEEK surface. However, the decrease in the surface roughness with a long time irradiation implies a decrease in adhesion strength due to a smaller contact area, and the shear strength due to topology change also slowly decreased after a long time irradiation.
