Total internal reflection fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (TIR-FCS) is applied to study the self-diffusion of poly(ethylene glycol) solutions in the presence of weakly attractive interfaces. Glass coverslips modified with aminopropyl- and propyl-terminated silanes are used to study the influence of solid surfaces on polymer diffusion. A model of three phases of polymer diffusion allows to describe the experimental fluorescence autocorrelation functions. Besides the two-dimensional diffusion of adsorbed polymer on the substrate and three-dimensional free diffusion in bulk solution, a third diffusion time scale is observed with intermediate diffusion times. This retarded three-dimensional diffusion in the solution is assigned to the long-range effects of solid surfaces on diffusional dynamics of polymers. The respective diffusion constants show Rouse scaling ( D ∼ N -1 ), indicating a screening of hydrodynamic interactions by the presence of the surface. Hence, the presented TIR-FCS method proves to be a valuable tool to investigate the effect of surfaces on polymer diffusion beyond the first adsorbed polymer layer on the 100 nm length scale.

Highly ordered block copolymer thin films have been studied extensively during the last years because they afford versatile self-assembled morphologies via a bottom-up approach. They promise to be used in applications such as polymeric membranes or templates for nanostructured materials. Among the block copolymer structures, perpendicular cylinders have received strong attention due to their ability to fabricate highly ordered nanopores and nanowires. Nanopores can be created from a thin block copolymer film upon the removal of one block by selective etching or by dissolution of one polymer block. Here we demonstrate the utilization of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (PS-hν-PEO) with an ortho-nitrobenzyl ester (ONB) as the photocleavable block-linker to create highly ordered thin films. Removal of the PEO block by choosing an appropriate solvent upon photocleavage is expected to yield arrays of nanopores decorated with functional groups, thus lending itself to adsorption or filtration uses. While the feasibility of this approach has been demonstrated, it is crucial to understand the influence of removal conditions (i.e., efficiency of photocleavage as well as best washing solvent) and to evaluate changes in the surface topology and inner structure upon photocleavage. To this end, the time dependence evolution of the surface morphology of block copolymer thin films was studied using grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) technique in combination with scanning probe microscopy.

The wetting dynamic on microrough and perfectly wetting (superhydrophilic) acrylates was studied. These surfaces were achieved by coating polymer films made of poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) with a hydrophilic acrylate based on hydroxypropylacrylate and polyethyleneglycolmonoacrylate, which was then cured and microroughened by photonic microfolding. The high transparency of the thin acrylate layers and polymer films allowed us to record the spreading of an applied water droplet through the film samples. Subsequently, the dynamic radius of the spreading pattern rc(t) was determined from the video recording. Various models for the wetting dynamics of superhydrophilic surfaces, namely, Tanner's law and a roughness-modified derivation published by McHale et al. in 2009, were then compared to the experimental results. Basically, the development of rc(t) in time was found to be in good agreement with McHale's model. Data analysis showed, however, that the initial phase of the spreading, that is, for t < 1 s, was not predicted well. This differing behavior relates well to a theory published by Cazabat and Cohen Stuart, who proposed that, on rough surfaces, spreading follows a power law in three time regimes. In this model, the (very) initial spreading is expected to be similar to the spreading on a smooth surface.

We demonstrate an integrated approach to prepare a nanostructured, multifunctional material with mutually exclusive, orthogonal properties. The hybrid material was obtained within a single step via self-assembly in solution. It consists of TiO(2) as a functional metal oxide and an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(triphenylamine) (PEO-PTPA). Within the materials' synthesis, the block copolymer not only acts as a templating agent but also adds an electronic functionality to the resulting hybrid material. During the synthesis, a variety of self-assembled morphologies, ranging from spheres to wires, can be created. The obtained morphology depends on the weight fraction of the polymer, solvent, TiO(2), and acid (HNO(3)). When films on silicon wafers are studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a ternary phase diagram could be mapped, whereas the crystallinity of TiO(2) could be proved by high-resolution TEM. Different morphologies of this self-assembled hybrid material were tested for solar cell application. Even for devices with layer thicknesses of the active material below 10 nm, power conversion efficiencies up to 0.15% at 1 sun and 1.5 AM were observed.

We present a simple method to prepare hexagonally packed metallic nanocylinders based on gold nanoparticles embedded in a copolymeric matrix. The gold nanoparticles are generated selectively within the P4VP-rich cylindrical domains of a polystyrene-b-poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer. In order to achieve this selectivity, a gold precursor (HAuCl4) is coupled to the pyridine blocks of a spherical PS327-b-P4VP27 block copolymer. In consequence, the hybrid block copolymer is able to self-assemble in a hexagonally packed cylinders morphology. The application of mechanical oscillatory shear improved markedly the alignment of these nanocylinders, while simultaneously the gold precursor was reduced in situ into gold nanoparticles. Following rheological characterization in the linear viscoelastic regime, a set of alignment parameters were comprehensively selected and checked with a series of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs. An optimal temperature of alignment was found after systematic evaluation of samples sheared at different temperatures. The block copolymer exhibited an increase in the domain period as a consequence of chain rearrangements around the newly formed gold nanoparticles. The hexagonally packed morphology was preserved, and under the optimal conditions single grain sizes showed significant improvement to macroscale order in comparison to nonaligned samples. In contrast to current multistep lithographic techniques, the present method constitutes a simple path to produce three-dimensional organic-inorganic conductive nanowires with periodicities at the macroscopic level.

The effects of surface stress and mass loading upon the adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto flexible silicon micromechanical cantilever sensors (MCSs) were studied in situ. A self-assembled monolayer of 2-mercaptoethylamine chloride (2-MEA) on gold was used to achieve single-side adsorption on the MCS. Such a preparation gave a positive surface potential, whereas a bare SiOx surface gave a negative surface potential. Wide scan X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the adsorption of polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) and polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) followed the general rule expected from the electrostatic interaction between the substrate and the polyelectrolyte, whereas the adsorption polyethyleneimine (PEI) did not. The adsorption of PAH on SiO(x) from a 3 mM water solution containing 1 M NaCl was associated with a deflection of the MCS toward the polyelectrolyte monolayer (tensile surface stress) owing to the hydrogen bonding between neighboring amino groups. Here, a surface stress change of 1.4 +/- 0.1 N/m was estimated. The adsorption of PSS from a 3 mM water solution containing 1 M NaCl on a 2-MEA surface induced a deflection of the MCS away from the polyelectrolyte layer (compressive stress), toward the SiO(x) side. Here, a surface stress change of 3.1 +/- 0.3 N/m was determined. The formation of a PAH layer on top of the PSS layer resulted in a deflection of the MCS toward the PAH layer. This indicated that the adjacent PSS layer was deswelling, corresponding to a surface stress change of 0.5 +/- 0.1 N/m.

For the controlled modification of sol-gel-templated polymer nanocomposites, which are transferred to a nanostructured, crystalline TiO2 phase by a calcination process, the addition of a single homopolymer was investigated. For the preparation, the homopolymer polystyrene (PS) is added in different amounts to the diblock copolymer P(S-b-EO) acting as a templating agent. The homopolymer/diblock copolymer blend system is combined with sol-gel chemistry to provide and attach the TiO2 nanoparticles to the diblock copolymer. So-called good-poor solvent-pair-induced phase separation leads to the formation of nanostructures by film preparation via spin coating. The fabricated morphologies are studied as a function of added homopolymer before and after calcination with atomic force microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. The observed behavior is discussed in the framework of controlling the block copolymer morphologies by the addition of homopolymers. At small homopolymer concentrations, the increase in homopolymer concentration changes the structure size, whereas at high homopolymer concentrations, a change in morphology is triggered. Thus, the behavior of a pure polymer system is transferred to a more complex hybrid system.

In this paper, we describe atomic force microscope (AFM) friction experiments on different polymers. The aim was to analyze the influence of the physical architecture of the polymer on the degree and mode of wear and on the wear mode. Experiments were carried out with (1) linear polystyrene (PS) and cycloolefinic copolymers of ethylene and norbornene, which are stabilized by entanglements, (2) mechanically stretched PS, (3) polyisoprene-b-polystyrene diblock copolymers, with varying composition, (4) brush polymers consisting of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone and PS side chains, (5) PMMA and PS brushes grafted from a silicon wafer, (6) plasma-polymerized PS, and (7) chemically cross-linked polycarbonate. For linear polymers, wear depends critically on the orientation of the chains with respect to the scan direction. With increasing cross-link density, wear was reduced and ripple formation was suppressed. The cross-linking density was the dominating material parameter characterizing wear.

Polymer brush coatings are well-known for their ability to tailor surface properties in a wide range of applications from colloid stabilization to medicine. In most cases, the brushes are used in solution. Consequently, efforts were expended to experimentally investigate or theoretically predict the swelling behavior of the brushes in solvents of different qualities. Here, we show that the micromechanical cantilever (MC) sensor technique is a tool to perform time-resolved physicochemical investigations of thin layers such as polymer brushes. Complementary to scattering techniques, which measure the thickness, the MC sensor technique provides information about changes in the internal pressure of the brushes during a swelling and deswelling process. We show that the kinetics of both swelling and deswelling are dependent on solvent quality. Comparing the measured data with its thickness evolution, which was calculated based on the Flory-Huggins theory, we found that only the first 10% of the thickness increase of the polymer brush results in a significant pressure increase inside the polymer brush layer.
