An ensemble of nanosystems can be considered to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) transverse relaxivity. Herein, an interacting superparamagnetic competing structure of an isotropic-anisotropic trimagnetic hybrid nanosystem, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @δ-MnO 2 @NiFe 2 O 4 , is considered for MRI relaxivity exploration. The interacting superparamagnetic system reveals fascinating dynamic magnetic behavior, where flower-shaped two-dimensional flakes are decorated over nanoparticles. The hybrid nanosystem exhibits modulated shape anisotropy with spin blocking and energy barrier broadening, which help in achieving faster MR transverse relaxivity. The hierarchical architecture ensemble of the trimagnetic landscape shows effective MR transverse relaxivity with a transverse ( r 2 ) relaxivity of 61.5 and potential cell viability. The competing trimagnetic system with regulated activation energy is found to be the underlying reason for such signal enhancement in MRI contrast efficiency. Hence, this study displays a novel pathway correlating MR transverse relaxivity with dynamic magnetic behavior and competing landscape of hierarchical trimagnetic ensembles.r 1 ) relaxivity of 61.5 and potential cell viability. I-Motif (iM) DNA structures represent among the most significant noncanonical nucleic acid configurations. iM-forming DNA sequences are found in an array of vital genomic locations and are particularly frequent in the promoter islands of various oncogenes. Thus, iM DNA is a crucial candidate for anticancer medicines; therefore, binding interactions between iM DNA and small molecular ligands, such as flavonoids, are critically important. Extensive sets of spectroscopic strategies and thermodynamic analysis were utilized in the present investigation to find out the favorable interaction of quercetin (Que), a dietary flavonoid that has various health-promoting characteristics, including anticancer properties, with noncanonical iM DNA structure. Spectroscopic studies and thermal analysis revealed that Que interacts preferentially with HRAS1 iM DNA compared with VEGF, BCL2 iM, and duplex DNA. Que, therefore, emerged as a suitable natural-product-oriented antagonist for targeting HRAS1 iM DNA. The innovative spectroscopic as well as mechanical features of Que and its specific affinity for HRAS1 iM may be useful for therapeutic applications and provide crucial insights for the design of compounds with remarkable medicinal properties.

Degradation of dyes under natural light sources is one of the most active research areas in basic science for greener technology. In this context, the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors has received massive attention in solving water treatment-related issues as these possess enormous potential for degrading organic impurities. Here, we report that barium aluminate (BaAl 2 O 4 , BAO), which has been extensively studied for photoluminescence applications, is found to be a highly potent candidate for photocatalytic activities. We have explored the degradation of dyes (meant for water purification) by using the photocatalytic properties of pure and Dy- and Yb-codoped BAO. Crystal structure, electron microscopy, and Raman analysis of the autocombustion-synthesized pure and codoped BAO samples revealed significant morphological changes such as increased particle size and stabilization of rod-like structures. UV-vis absorbance measurements confirm the presence of multiple bandgaps in the BAO samples, which is substantiated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Photocatalytic degradation studies of methylene blue (MB) dye (with different catalyst concentrations, dopings, and MB dye concentrations) have been carried out by using BAO. The kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation measurements has been explained by the Boltzmann distribution function, and the fastest (in less than 40 min), with more than 99% degradation of MB impurity, is reported here for the first time in BAO compounds. Synthesized BAO samples show excellent cyclic stability, which is essential for their potential applications in environmental remediation. The trade-off between the enhancement of surface area and increased particle size is considered the key parameter for controlling the photocatalytic performance of the BAO catalyst after Dy and Yb codopings.

The potential application of magnetic nanosystems as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents has been thoroughly investigated. This work seeks to attain robust MRI-contrast efficiency by designing an interacting landscape of a bimagnetic ensemble of zinc ferrite nanorods and maghemite nanoparticles, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ZnFe 2 O 4 . Because of competing spin clusters and structural anisotropy triggered by isotropic γ-Fe 2 O 3 and anisotropic ZnFe 2 O 4 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ZnFe 2 O 4 undergoes the evolution of cluster spin-glass state as evident from the critical slowing down law. Such interacting γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ZnFe 2 O 4 with spin flipping of 1.2 × 10 -8 s and energy barrier of 8.2 × 10 -14 erg reflects enhanced MRI-contrast signal. Additionally, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ZnFe 2 O 4 is cell-viable to noncancerous HEK 293 cell-line and shows no pro-tumorigenic activity as observed in MDA-MB-231, an extremely aggressive triple-negative breast cancer cell line. As a result, γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ZnFe 2 O 4 is a feasible option for an MRI-contrast agent having longitudinal relaxivity, r 1 , of 0.46 s -1 mM -1 and transverse relaxivity, r 2 , of 15.94 s -1 mM -1 , together with r 2 /r 1 of 34.65 at 1.41 T up to a modest metal concentration of 0.1 mM. Hence, this study addresses an interacting isotropic/anisotropic framework with faster water proton decay in MR-relaxivity resulting in phantom signal amplification.

In contrast to the hot-injection organometallic routes, synthesizing stable and highly luminescent core/shell nanocrystals with encapsulation of biocompatible groups through an aqueous route is a long-standing challenge. In recent years, relatively high quantum efficiency and unique properties of core/shell nanostructured materials (quantum dots) have contributed toward enhancement in sensing capability. The present work reports a facile aqueous synthesis process of core/shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with encapsulation of glutathione (GSH). The optimal conditions for the synthesis of the most stable particles were ascertained, and the different experimental analyses suggest that the stable core/shell QDs in question have good crystallinity with a size around 4.7 nm with a shell thickness of 0.7 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield of about 35%. Further, it is demonstrated that the as-synthesized material has great potential in detecting as low as 0.28 nM 3-nitro-l-tyrosine (3-NT), an important marker for oxidative stress, the level of which in our body signals several chronically diseased conditions. The enthalpy-driven interactions of CdSe/ZnS-GSH QDs with 3-NT were characterized through steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy and isothermal microcalorimetry. The devised method of probing 3-NT was further validated with human serum samples. Thus, the proposed strategy may provide a protocol for selective determination of 3-NT under different pathological conditions.

We report the formation of CuIn (1- x ) Ga x S 2 (CIGS) thin films through a solution approach, namely, successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The obtained films possessed a high degree of crystallinity indicating the efficacy of the deposition process in forming CIGS films. A series of alloys have evidenced band gap bowing, that is, the optical band gap does not follow a linear relationship with the composition; the band gap of an intermediate compound is higher than that is interpolated from a linear relationship or Vegard's law. The composition-dependent band gap followed a quadratic relationship evidencing reverse band gap bowing, manifesting an upward convex behavior. With scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and thereby the density of states of the disordered semiconductors, we have observed a bowing behavior in the transport gap as well and identified the roles of the conduction and valence bands in yielding the bowing phenomenon. The results are explained in terms of the anionic and cationic orbitals involved in forming the two bands. The STS studies have been analyzed further to derive the Urbach energy of the disordered semiconductors. When STS studies are combined with Kelvin probe force microscopy, which in effect provides the Fermi energy of the alloyed semiconductors, we could derive the band edges and the Fermi energy of the whole series in an absolute energy scale during the manifestation of the bowing phenomenon.

The aim of the work is to explore structure-relaxivity relationship by observing transverse relaxivity enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of differently organized superparamagnetic complex ensembles of zinc ferrite isotropic/anisotropic nanosystems. We observe that superparamagnetic systems show a correlation of MRI-transverse relaxivity, r 2 , with spatial arrangement of nanoparticles, as well as magnetic easy axes and thermal-energy-dependent anisotropy energy landscape. The presence of highly random/partially aligned easy axes with enhanced anisotropy constant leads to modulation in transverse relaxation. As a result, we achieve highest contrast efficiency in compact ensemble of isotropic nanoparticles and hollow core ensemble. Indeed, core-shell ensemble with combined effect of aligned and randomly oriented easy magnetic axes shows a reduction in MRI contrast efficiency. However, we address a hypothesis for transverse contrast efficiency where we depict the correlation among MRI-transverse contrast efficiency with structural complexity of ensembles, differently arranged primary nanoparticles/magnetic easy axes, anisotropy constant, and collective magnetic behavior. In consequence, we simplify the limitation of quantum mechanical outer-sphere diffusion model of magnetic resonance relaxivity by neglecting the contribution of magnetization and introducing an anisotropy constant contribution with complex structure landscape of easy axes.r 1 , with spatial arrangement of nanoparticles, as well as magnetic easy axes and thermal-energy-dependent anisotropy energy landscape. Nanostructured topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) in the presence of exotic surface states with spin momentum locking reported in individual nanostructures are predicted to hold a great promise for spintronics and quantum computing applications. However, practical application demands a strategy with large-scale production and integration for device applications. In this work, we demonstrate through prominent signatures of weak antilocalization (WAL), arising predominantly from destructive quantum interference on robust surface states, that a correlated TCI phase is possible in the nanobulk assembly of carefully nanostructured quasi-two-dimensional SnTe (edge-to-edge length ∼ 382 nm) synthesized by a simple, rapid, and scalable microwave-assisted solvothermal method. Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka analysis ( T ), as well as the temperature dependence of resistivity, illustrates an interplay of both conductions from 2D channels and 3D EEI effects as the precursor for the observed WAL at low temperatures (2-6 K). Interestingly, the enhanced thermoelectric power of the sample of ∼45 μV/K, with a p-type carrier concentration of ∼10 -0.71 ), as well as the temperature dependence of resistivity, illustrates an interplay of both conductions from 2D channels and 3D EEI effects as the precursor for the observed WAL at low temperatures (2-6 K). We demonstrate a facile liquid phase exfoliation method by only using perchloric acid to synthesize graphene quantum dots (GQDs) having excitation independent strong emission with a quantum yield of about 14%. The proposed simplified synthesis strategy can help in overcoming the limitations of existing aqueous routes which produce GQDs with excitation dependent emission and of low quantum efficiency. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of GQDs have been studied in detail to understand the origin of emission. As-synthesized GQDs show excitation independent photoluminesce (PL) which suggests that the synthesized materials do not have any significant defects. Spectral analysis suggests that the PL emission of the well-defined GQDs originates mainly from the peripheral functional groups conjugated with carbon backbone planes. We also demonstrate a relatively longer PL lifetime (average lifetime of about 10 ns) of the synthesized GQDs determined by time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurement and this high lifetime suggests that the synthesized GQDs may be suitable for biomacromolecular probing. In addition, as-synthesized GQDs interestingly show delayed fluorescence and steady state anisotropy, which make the material an appropriate candidate for application in sensing and bioimaging of cells and organisms.

Low-dimensionality effects in the melting behavior of a cadmium arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer have been studied. Depth resolved information about structural changes occurring with temperature is obtained using in-plane X-ray diffraction under standing wave conditions. The surface region exhibits a distinctly different melting behavior as compared to the bulk of the film. While in the bulk of a 13-monolayer cadmium arachidate multilayer, the crystalline phase directly transforms to a tilted hexaticlike phase at 360 K, in the near surface region transformation occurs via an intermediate smectic phase. This behavior of the surface region is similar to that observed in two-dimensional crystals. Thus even in a thick Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer, the surface region exhibits low-dimensionality effects.
