Background: The efficacy of adjuvant sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in correcting structural problems in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) caused by mite who have undergone septomeatoplasty (SMP) has not been studied. Methods: This non‐randomized controlled study recruited patients with AR (caused by mite) and concurrent septal deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy, at a tertiary hospital in Taiwan. SMP was performed on all patients as a surgical intervention. The patients were then divided into two groups: the control group, which underwent surgery only, and the experimental group, which received SLIT as an adjuvant treatment. Demographic data and rhinitis control assessment test (RCAT) results were analyzed. Results: A total of 96 patients were enrolled in the study (SMP + SLIT group, n = 52; SMP only group, n = 44). No significant differences were observed in any of the variables between the two groups before and one month after surgery. However, during evaluations at the third and sixth month, the SMP + SLIT group showed significant improvement in the total RCAT scores compared to the SMP only group (28.6 ± 1.56 vs. 24.5 ± 3.66, p < 0.001; 27.1 ± 2.87 vs. 19.9 ± 5.56, p < 0.001). In addition, significantly better control of all RCAT sub‐categories was observed in the SMP + SLIT group at the third and sixth month evaluations. Conclusions: SLIT may serve as an ideal adjuvant therapy after SMP in patients with AR. Level of Evidence: 3 Laryngoscope, 134:3073–3079, 2024 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) reduces the health‐related quality of life and subsequently causes a tremendous socio‐economic impact. Although many studies have been conducted, few have identified a relationship between bacteriological characteristics and different phenotypes or endotypes. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the recent trends in bacterial cultures from different types of CRS in the Asian population. Methods: This retrospective case–control study recruited patients diagnosed with CRS who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) at a tertiary hospital in Taiwan. The patients were classified into those with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP)/chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (eCRS)/non‐eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (NECRS), and central compartment atopic disease (CCAD)/lateral‐dominant nasal polyp (LDNP) groups. The demographic data and bacteriological characteristics of the groups were analyzed. Results: We included 503 patients, identifying no significant difference between CRSwNP and CRSsNP for several common bacteria in CRS. The number of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates in culture was significantly higher in the NECRS group (50.46% vs. 32.56%, p = 0.0003) than that in the eCRS group. The number of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA; 8.51% vs. 2.35%, p = 0.0221) positive isolates was significantly higher in the CCAD group than that in the LDNP group. Conclusions: This was the first study in Asia to analyze the relationship between bacteriological characteristics and CCAD. MRSA is significantly higher in the CCAD group than that in the LDNP group. Recognizing the unique microbiology of CRSwNP, eCRS, and CCAD is crucial when selecting antimicrobial therapy to lessen the socio‐economic impact. Objectives/ Hypothesis An important tumor suppressor gene, p53, plays a role in the regulation of cell progression and prevention of carcinogenesis. Mutated p53 is related to cell progression and malignancy. We aimed to evaluate the association between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and p53 polymorphism. Study Design Case control study. Methods All individuals were divided into two groups: nasopharyngeal carcinoma (n = 50) and non-nasopharyngeal carcinoma groups (n = 59). Their p53 codon 72 polymorphisms (arginine [Arg] homozygotes, heterozygotes, proline [Pro] homozygotes) were detected by polymerase chain reaction. Associations between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and p53 polymorphism were evaluated. Results Distributions of various p53 polymorphisms significantly differed between the two groups. We noted a dominant presentation of Pro homozygotes in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma population over that in the non-nasopharyngeal carcinoma population. Proportions of Pro homozygotes and heterozygotes and Arg homozygotes were 32%, 28%, and 40% in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma population and were 13.5%, 44.1%, and 42.4% in the non-nasopharyngeal carcinoma population, respectively. Conclusions An association exists between nasopharyngeal carcinoma and p53 codon 72 polymorphism. The p53 Pro homozygotes are to a higher risk of development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Objective/hypothesis: Nasal polyposis (NP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tract. The pathophysiology is unknown but has been shown to be multifactorial. Free radical-mediated damage has been implicated in the pathogenesis of NP. Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are the first and the most important line of antioxidant enzyme defense against reactive oxygen species. Moreover, isozymes of the SOD family are critical for modulating the activity of nitric oxide, a gaseous free radical that is believed to play roles in the physiology and pathology of respiratory tracts. However, the expression profile of SOD isoforms in NP remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the expression profile of the SOD isoforms in nasal polyps from nonallergic patients., Study Design: Prospective study., Methods: Nasal polyp tissues were obtained from eight nonallergic patients who underwent elective polypectomy; mucosal specimens from the middle turbinates were acquired from eight subjects without NP as control tissues. The expression profile of SOD isoenzymes, SOD1, SOD2, and SOD3, in the nasal tissues was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and Western blotting (WB)., Results: NP in all eight of the NP patients manifested as severe or recurrent sinonasal polyposis clinically. The expression pattern of SOD isoenzymes evaluated by RT-PCR analysis indicated that the mean levels of SOD1 mRNA and, to a greater extent, SOD3 mRNA were higher in polyp tissues than in control tissues. There was no significant difference in the expression levels of SOD2 mRNA between the two groups. The data from ELISA and WB analysis showed that there were increased expressions of SOD1 and SOD3 protein in polyp tissues compared with the control tissues, but there was no difference in the expression of SOD2 protein between the two groups. The results from RT-PCR, ELISA, and WB were paralleled and revealed that the expressions of SOD1 and, to a greater extent, SOD3 were higher in polyp tissues than in the control group., Conclusions: The expressions of SOD3 and SOD1 were higher in polyp tissues. These results are consistent with previously reported data and support the hypothesis that there is increased oxidative stress in NP. Our data also suggest that the SODs might be important in the pathogenesis of NP; however, the roles these SOD isoforms, especially SOD3, play in both normal nasal mucosa and NP require further clarification.
