This article discusses research into the disproportionate representation of men in library administration and management positions. While the majority of librarians are female, the majority of library administrators are male. The differences in responsibilities held by male and female librarians are also considered, with men dominating information technology while women were more likely to take on patron services roles. These disparities were considered in terms of the recruitment pattern differentials between men and women. Stereotypes about the sexual orientation, intelligence and effectiveness of male librarians are assessed.
