The controversy began after the DOJ requested through the GPO's Superintendent of Documents that five documents distributed on civil and criminal asset forfeiture procedures were to be withdrawn and destroyed immediately, as they are intended for internal use only. The documents were Civil and Criminal Forfeiture Procedure, Select Criminal Forfeiture Forms, Select Federal Asset Forfeiture Statutes, Asset forfeiture and Money Laundering Resource Directory, and Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000 (CAFRA). Librarians, however, launched a campaign to reverse the order and the American Library Association (ALA) submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, asking why DOJ requested that documents that have been available for as long as four years be removed. Boston Public Library president Bernie Margolis, in a statement on the ALA Council electronic list, said he had asked that the decision be reconsidered and noted that he had copied the documents for cataloging as part of BPL's collection. Though DOJ officials said that the materials were inappropriately distributed to depository libraries through an error, Superintendent of Documents Judith Russell noted that the agency determined that these materials are "not sufficiently sensitive to require removal from the depository library system."

This article focuses on waste reduction issues for concerned librarians in the U.S. Despite the automation and modernization of library services, paper consumption in libraries continues to grow in the country. Research for an article to publicize recycling in libraries revealed benefits that went beyond saving resources, improving the environment, and earning money. Now garbage has become big business and governments at all levels are legislating mandatory recycling in the country. From the comments on the recycling surveys, the typical law library adventure into recycling progressed. Recycling on personal money, time, and energy at first, the person gradually persuaded the management to institutionalize the process. Eventually, the administrative or legislative action on local to state levels helped the process. At the University of San Diego, at the urging of the Conservation Club and after all the Earth Day publicity, a campuswide pickup was started. Sharply increasing costs of waste removal were part of the motivation. In library recycling, the buying of recycled paper is a critical reuse strategy because it closes the loop on the paper waste stream in the country having still a discrepancy in what the term recycled paper truly means.

This article focuses on the rejection of bids from industrial firms by the U.S. Library of Congress (LC) for mass deacidification of its book collection. LC had originally sent out its requests for proposal specifications in September 1990. On August 30, the agency issued a press release saying that none of the offers received could meet all of the technical and business requirements. The bidders involved are also unhappy. Akzo, a Netherlands-based chemical corporation, is one of three companies that made a bid for the LC contract. It is one of the licensors of treating books with diethyl zinc (DEZ) in a vapor deacidification process developed in the 1970s. While the process helps stop further embrittlement of books printed on acidic paper, the best preservation method for books is original printing on permanent paper, which more and more publishers are adopting. In 1979, after charges of conflict of interest, LC licensed DEZ to the private sector. At the press time, LC had not revealed test results from the bidding companies, although it plans to do so. Gerald Garvey, program manager of LC admitted that they has set very high standards and wants them kept. He also told that LC will be returning to Congress, which provides them budget monies.

This article provides information on the Occasional Paper No. 7 produced by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) in response to a report called Humanities in America issued by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the U.S. Describing the NEH attacks on teaching in the humanities as comic in their incongruity if they were not taken so seriously by so many, the ACLS paper goes on to detail some enlivening transformations in the field. For example, the authors write characteristically in literary studies; for instance, a boy's experience of growing up has been deemed universal and a girl's marginal and expansion of the old standard canon means an instruction in otherness. The authors also defend the study of popular culture, arguing that competing theories about popular culture provide students with a framework in which to criticize materials they consume daily and unthinkingly. In their conclusions, the authors stress that a national core curriculum would stifle imaginative teaching and be a restriction of intellectual freedom. They state in an unequivocal and resonant sentence that one of the humanities' most fundamental responsibilities is to expose and question the aesthetic, moral, cultural and epistemological assumptions which govern our behavior and our society.
