This article examines the forces and environmental conditions that will most likely shape research libraries in the twenty-first century. The next generation will be an especially difficult period for librarians and users, particularly faculty who became accustomed to working in and using research libraries during the post-World War II years. The technological transformation envisioned will result in a break with past traditions. Computers and mass storage devices linked into telecommunications networks are already beginning to alter, in fundamental ways, how faculty seek, obtain, and use information. The fact that research libraries are large, complex bureaucracies will only magnify the challenges that lie ahead.
