Short-chain fatty acids (SFCAs) exhibit diverse functions from kidneys to human health and diseases, and also could exert their roles in post-translational modifications (PTMs). Nowadays, novel short-chain lysine acylations derived from SFCAs have attracted more attentions, including propionylation, butyrylation, 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation, β-hydroxybutyrylation, malonylation, succinylation, crotonylation, glutarylation, lactylation, etc. These acylations have multiple physiological effects on many diseases, which also contribute to kidney pathophysiology.
