This paper shows the analysis of a set of indicators traditionally used for the automatic extraction of collocations evaluated on a large corpus that collects a wide sample of Spanish, with a total number of word around 300 000 000. The results are compared with those obtained by combinations of the Diccionario combinatorio del español contemporáneo. Redes. As a result of this analysis we define a methodology for the use of information to exploit the recorded information that can demonstrate the combinatorial properties of words in Spanish and the software that implements it: COLEXWEB. This paper focuses on the delimitation between phenomena that concern composition, on the one hand, and phraseology, on the other. By compounding we mean a morphological process that applies strictly inside the wordform. However, phraseology, understood as the set of non-free combination of linguistic signs, cuts across word-formation and phrase formation. We defend the possibility of free and non-free compounds and phrases and argue against the notion of syntagmatic compound. This label covers units such as fin de semana 'week-end', pasta de dientes 'toothpaste' or [un] sin techo 'a homeless person', among many others. As it will be shown, these units have a heterogeneous nature varying from phraseological phrases (idioms and collocations) until phraseological compounds (single wordforms despite their ortography). The purpose of this paper is fourfold: (1) to point out the existence of two types of atypical verb+noun collocations in Spanish, that are the concealing collocations and the metaphorical collocations; (2) to describe their main semantic characteristics; (3) to analyze two semantic processes in the selection of the collocator in these collocations; and (4) to study the distinction between metaphorical collocations and verbal idioms.
