Objective: The study aimed to assess whether thyroid hormone (TH) sensitivity is related to visceral fat area (VFA) and visceral obesity in euthyroid subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: 750 euthyroid patients with T2D were enrolled. A VFA of 80 cm2 or more was considered visceral obesity. Central TH sensitivity was conducted using thyrotrophic thyroxine resistance index (TT4RI), thyrotropin index (TSHI), and thyroid feedback quantile-based index (TFQI). Free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) was utilized for assessing peripheral TH sensitivity. Results: The subjects had a mean age of 51.5 ± 11.1 years, and 540 (72.0%) of them were men. In multivariable regression analyses, there was a positive correlation of FT3/FT4 tertile with visceral obesity, after full adjustment for confounding variables (P < 0.05). The middle and highest FT3/FT4 tertiles were correlated with a 134% [95% CI (1.24, 4.44)] and 98% [95% CI (1.04, 3.78)] higher prevalence of visceral obesity than the lowest tertile, respectively. Conversely, elevated TFQI levels were linked to a decreased prevalence of visceral obesity. Stratified analysis revealed that these associations were particularly pronounced in participants who are neither overweight nor obese and those aged less than 60 years (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Higher TH sensitivity is correlated with visceral obesity and elevated VFA in euthyroid patients with T2D, particularly among those younger than 60 years and individuals who are neither overweight nor obese. Background: Previous studies have shown a correlation between depression and obesity, as well as between depression and the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). However, there is limited research on the association between visceral obesity and depression, as well as the potential mediating role of AIP in this relationship. Methods: This study included 13,123 participants from the 2005–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Visceral obesity was measured with the Body Roundness Index (BRI), while depression was evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The AIP served as a marker for lipid disorders. To investigate the association between the BRI and depression, multivariate logistic regressions, restricted cubic spline models, subgroup analyses, and interaction tests were used. Additionally, a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the role of AIP in mediating the effect of BRI on depression. Results: There was a positive linear correlation between the BRI and depression. After controlling for all covariates, individuals in the highest BRI (Q4) group had an OR of 1.42 for depression (95% CI: 1.12–1.82) in comparison with individuals in the lowest BRI (Q1) group. Moreover, the AIP partially mediated the association between the BRI and depression, accounting for approximately 8.64% (95% CI: 2.04-16.00%) of the total effect. Conclusion: The BRI was positively associated with depression, with the AIP playing a mediating role. This study provides a novel perspective on the mechanism that connects visceral obesity to depression. Managing visceral fat and monitoring AIP levels may contribute to alleviating depression. Background: We aimed to explore the causal relationship between blood metabolites and the risk of visceral obesity, as measured by visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Methods: Summary statistics for 486 blood metabolites and total, as well as sex-stratified, MRI-derived VAT measurements, adjusted for body mass index (BMI) and height, were collected from previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS). A two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) design was used. Comprehensive evaluation was further conducted, including sensitivity analysis, linkage disequilibrium score (LDSC) regression, Steiger test, and metabolic pathway analysis. Results: After multiple testing correction, arachidonate (20:4n6) has been implicated in VAT accumulation (β = 0.35, 95%CI:0.18–0.52, P < 0.001; FDR = 0.025). Additionally, several blood metabolites were identified as potentially having causal relationship (FDR < 0.10). Among them, lysine (β = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.28–1.06, P < 0.001; FDR = 0.074), proline (β = 0.30, 95%CI:0.13–0.48, P < 0.001; FDR = 0.082), valerate (β = 0.50, 95%CI:0.23–0.78, P < 0.001, FDR = 0.091) are associated with an increased risk of VAT accumulation. On the other hand, glycine (β=-0.21, 95%CI: -0.33–0.09), P < 0.001, FDR = 0.076) have a protective effect against VAT accumulation. Most blood metabolites showed consistent trends between different sexes. Multivariable MR analysis demonstrated the effect of genetically predicted arachidonate (20:4n6) and proline on VAT remained after accounting for BMI and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). There is no evidence of heterogeneity, pleiotropy, and reverse causality. Conclusion: Our MR findings suggest that these metabolites may serve as biomarkers, as well as for future mechanistic exploration and drug target selection of visceral obesity. Background: Currently, there is limited and controversial clinical research on the correlation between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and dyslipidemia. This discrepancy in findings may be because studies that primarily focused on hospital-based populations may not be applicable to community-based populations. Therefore, the primary objective of this research endeavor is to scrutinize the correlation between nocturnal hypoxemia and blood lipid concentrations among adult individuals residing in the community who exhibit symptoms of SDB. Additionally, this study aimed to identify the nocturnal hypoxia parameters having the strongest correlation with this relationship. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected data from The Guangdong Sleep Health Study, which included 3829 participants. Type IV sleep monitoring was employed to measure hypoxemia parameters, and lipoproteins were evaluated using fasting blood samples. To understand the association between dyslipidemia and hypoxemia parameters, a multivariable logistic regression model was used. Subgroup analyses were conducted to stratify data according to age, sex, waist circumference, and chronic diseases. Results: The age of the individuals involved in the study spanned from 20 to 90 years. The average age of the participants was 56.15 ± 13.11 years. Of the total sample size, 55.7% were male. In the fully adjusted model, the meanSpO2 was negatively associated with hyperlipidemia (0.9303 [95% confidence interval 0.8719, 0.9925]). Upon conducting a nonlinearity test, the relationship between the meanSpO2 and hyperlipidemia was nonlinear. The inflection points were determined to be 95. When meanSpO2 ≥ 95%, a difference of 1 in the meanSpO2 corresponded to a 0.07 difference in the risk of hyperlipidemia. Conclusions: This study revealed that higher meanSpO2 is significantly and negatively associated with hyperlipidemia in adult community residents with SDB, particularly when the meanSpO2 exceeds 95. This finding emphasizes the importance of close monitoring for dyslipidemia, which is considered an early indicator of atherosclerosis in patients with SDB who experience nocturnal hypoxia. Objectives: To explore the impact of visceral obesity (VO) measured by preoperative abdominal computed tomography (CT) on postoperative infectious complications for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and establish a predictive model. Methods: Patients who underwent resection for colorectal cancer between January 2015 and January 2021 were enrolled in this study. All patients were measured for body mass index (BMI) and visceral fat area (VFA) preoperatively. Infectious complications were compared between the different groups according to BMI and VO categories. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze whether VO was an independent risk factor for postoperative infectious complications. According to the results of logistic regression, six machine learning approaches were used to establish predictive models and perform internal validation. The best-performing model was interpreted by the SHAPley Additive exPlanations value. Results: Approximately 64.81% of 520 patients had VO. VO was significantly connected with postoperative infectious complications (P < 0.001), coronary heart disease (P = 0.004), cerebral infarction (P = 0.001), hypertension (P < 0.001), diabetes (P < 0.001), and fatty liver (P < 0.001). The rates of wound infection (P = 0.048), abdominal or pelvic infection (P = 0.006), and pneumonia (P = 0.008) increased obviously in patients with VO. Compared to the low BMI group, a high BMI was found to be significantly associated with hypertension (P=0.007), fatty liver (P＜0.001), and a higher rate of postoperative infection (P=0.003). The results of logistic regression revealed that VO (OR = 2.01, 95% CI 1.17 ~ 3.48, P = 0.012), operation time ≥ 4 h (OR = 2.52, 95% CI 1.60 ~ 3.97, P < 0.001), smoking (OR = 2.04, 95% CI 1.16 ~ 3.59, P = 0.014), ostomy (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.04 ~ 2.61, P = 0.033), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR = 2.23, 95% CI 1.09 ~ 4.57, P = 0.029) were independent risk factors. The light gradient boosting machine (LGBM) model displayed the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) (0.74, 95% CI 0.68 ~ 0.81). Conclusions: In this study, VO was superior to BMI in evaluating the influence of obesity on metabolic comorbidities and postoperative infectious complications in colorectal cancer patients. Background and aims: The effect of body fat deposition on the kidney has received increasing attention. The Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) is an important indicator of recent research. The purpose of this study was to explore the predictive value of CVAI and other organ obesity indicators in predicting CKD in Chinese residents. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 5355 subjects was performed. First, the study utilized locally estimated scatterplot smoothing to describe the dose–response relationship between the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and CVAI. The L1-penalized least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression algorithm was used for covariation screening, and the correlation between CVAI and eGFR was quantified using multiple logistic regression. At the same time, the diagnostic efficiency of CVAI and other obesity indicators was evaluated by ROC curve analysis. Results: CVAI and eGFR were negatively correlated. Using group one as the control, an odds ratio (OR) was calculated to quantify CVAI quartiles (ORs of Q2, Q3, and Q4 were 2.21, 2.99, and 4.42, respectively; P for trend < 0.001). CVAI had the maximum area under the ROC curve compared with other obesity indicators, especially in the female population (AUC: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.71–0.76). Background: Visceral obesity is associated with cancer incidence and prognosis. Altered lipid profiles are frequently seen in visceral obese patients. The blood test of lipid profiles is more convenient and has no radical side effects than computed tomography (CT), which is presently the most accurate way to measure visceral fat area. This article aims to investigate the associations between lipid profiles and visceral obesity in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Methods: In total, 399 patients newly diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer were enrolled in this observational study. Lipid profiles were obtained from blood samples, and visceral fat mass area (VFA) was measured by CT. VFA ≥ 100 cm2 was considered visceral obesity. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was utilized to evaluate the prognostic powers of lipid parameters for viscerally obese gastrointestinal cancer patients. Results: Patients who had visceral obesity had higher triglyceride (TG) levels (1.20 ± 0.60 vs. 0.87 ± 0.57 mmo/L, P < 0.001), total cholesterol (TC) levels (3.57 ± 0.84 vs. 3.40 ± 0.82, P = 0.044), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels (2.08 ± 0.66 vs. 1.94 ± 0.66, P = 0.047) and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) levels (0.88 ± 0.24 vs. 1.00 ± 0.26, P < 0.001) than those in the normal group. TG was positively correlated with VFA (r = 0.299, P < 0.001), while HDL-C was inversely correlated with VFA (r = -0.237, P < 0.001). TG and HDL-C had predictive capacity for visceral obesity at cutoff levels of 0.92 mmol/L (AUROC 0.700, 95% CI, 0.653–0.745, P < 0.001) and 0.98 mmol/L (AUROC 0.700, 95% CI, 0.585–0.682, P < 0.001), respectively. TG > 0.92 mmol/L with HDL-C < 0.98 mmol/L was linked with an increased risk of visceral obesity (OR = 4.068, 95% CI, 2.338—7.079, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Lipid profiles were significantly correlated with VFA. Gastrointestinal cancer patients with TG > 0.92 mmol/L and HDL-C < 0.98 mmol/L were at elevated risk of visceral obesity in the Chinese population. Background: Limited studies regarding the correlation of lipid accumulation product (LAP) with a decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) have yielded conflicting findings, and no report has demonstrated the relationship of LAP with chronic kidney disease (CKD), defined as the presence of albuminuria and/or a decreased eGFR. The purpose of this study was to estimate the possible correlation of LAP with CKD prevalence in Chinese community adults. Method: In this cross-sectional study, LAP level of 7202 participants (age ≥ 40 years) was determined, and its possible association with CKD was evaluated by a multiple logistic regression model. Results: Compared with subjects with non-CKD, non-albuminuria, and high eGFR, LAP levels significantly increased in female not male subjects with CKD, albuminuria, and low eGFR, respectively (all P < 0.001). The univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that LAP level of female not male subjects were significantly and positively associated with the prevalence of CKD (P < 0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of CKD prevalence in female not male subjects progressively increased across LAP quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and the risk of CKD prevalence of subjects in Q4 significantly increased compared to those in Q1 after adjustment for potential confounding factors in Models 4 (odds ratio [OR]: 1.382, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.002–1.906, P < 0.05). Stratified analysis revealed positive associations of LAP quartiles with risk of CKD prevalence in people with the following characteristics: women, older, overweight, with hypertension, normal glucose tolerance, appropriate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, nonsmokers, nondrinkers, and no cardiovascular disease events. Conclusions: High LAP levels might be significantly associated with risk of CKD prevalence in community-dwelling Chinese female adults, which may inform both public health recommendations and clinical practice. Despite the existing preventative and therapeutic measures, cardiovascular diseases remain the main cause of temporary disability, long-term disability, and mortality. Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and their complications. However, not all fat depots have the same inflammatory, paracrine, and metabolic activities. In addition, recent studies have indicated that the accumulation of visceral fat, rather than subcutaneous fat, is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk. However, there is also evidence that increasing the area of visceral fat can help protect against lipotoxicity. This review aims to discuss the contemporary literature regarding the characteristics of the visceral, epicardial, and perivascular fat depots, as well as their associations with cardiovascular disease. Background: Neck circumference (NC) was reported to be associated with visceral obesity in some specific subjects. However, no studies have reported whether NC could identify visceral obesity in the general population. Here, we mainly aimed to explore whether NC is suitable to identify visceral obesity in the general population. Methods: Our data were from a cross-sectional survey on the prevalence of metabolic diseases and risk factors in East China from 2014 to 2015. A total of 9366 participants aged 18–93 were identified for analysis. Anthropometric indices, biochemical parameters and clinical characteristics were measured. The NC values were quartered according to sex. Spearman's correlation coefficient was employed to test the correlations between different variables. Linear regression and logistic regression were conducted to explore the relationship of NC with visceral adiposity indices and visceral obesity. Results: Among the 9366 participants, 3938 (42.05%) were male and 5428 (57.95%) were female. NC had a positive correlation with the visceral adiposity indices, regardless of sex. In all quartiles of NC, in both men and women, as NC values increased, the values of all the fatness indices showed a tendency to increase (all P < 0.001). After full adjustment for demographic variables and metabolic factors, linear regression showed that NC was still associated with the fatness indices for visceral obesity (all P < 0.001). In addition, logistic analysis showed that a larger NC was associated with a higher risk of visceral obesity in both males (OR 32.34, 95% CI 24.02–43.53; P < 0.001) and females (OR 21.43, 95% CI 17.30–26.55; P < 0.001) after adjusting for potential confounding factors.
