The remarkable ability of certain molecules with a bent molecular shape to form hierarchically self-assembled helical building blocks with negative Gaussian or cylindrical curvature featuring in-layer hexatic ordering– so-called B4 phases – has quickly transformed these molecules into desirable building blocks for a variety of potential applications in optics, energy harvesting, and metamaterials. We here demonstrate that these building blocks, helical nanofilaments, helical microfilaments, and heliconical-layered nanocylinders, can to some degree be predictably blended. Supported by scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and variable angle x-ray scattering data, the three bent-core compounds, each forming exactly one of these B4 morphologies, in binary mixtures at a 1:1 molar ratio, form either the third missing, or one of the two but with opposite handedness, or a random mixture of the two selected morphologies with larger overall dimensions. Furthermore, for two of the mixtures the a priori predicted handedness of the chiral filaments was experimentally confirmed. The third mixture with a priori predicted antagonistic handedness of the initial morphologies forms a combination of the two, one apparently achiral and the other one with opposite handedness. Dispersions of chemically and thermally robust carbon dots (2.5 ± 0.5 nm in core diameter) were prepared and investigated by polarised optical microscopy, electro-optic measurements including dynamic tests and numerical simulations as well as fluorescence confocal microscopy. The carbon dots were prepared by a straightforward thermal decomposition method from citric acid and hexadecylamine, and they show typical excitation wavelength-dependent photoluminescence behaviour. All dispersions, ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 wt.%, showed lower values for isotropic–nematic phase transition temperature and broader isotropic–nematic biphasic temperature intervals with increasing carbon dot content in comparison to the neat material. Doping of the nematic host with the carbon dots resulted in lower values for the apparent threshold voltage and the elastic constants, but higher values for the rotational viscosity. At 2.5 wt.% and higher, carbon dots residing at the confining interfaces in planar cells induce an increasing initial pre-tilt of up to 8° at lower temperatures. Fluorescence confocal microscopy confirmed this, where the luminescence of the carbon dots permitted visualisation of the distribution of the carbon dots in the bulk with a noticeable, in some cases even pattern-like, segregation to the confining interfaces. Due to the limited thermal stability of current commercially available liquid crystals (LCs), the incorporation into polymer composites through standard processing techniques, such as melt coextrusion, has been hindered. Motivated by this dilemma, a series of smectic B liquid crystalline structures based on the 4,4ʹ-alkyl substituted biphenyl moiety were synthesised through conventional methodologies and probed for their thermal stability and LC properties. Degradation temperatures were found to increase with increasing aliphatic chain length – up to 295 °C for C16 substituted structures, which is well above the processing temperatures of commercial polymers. Additionally, all compounds were found to be liquid crystalline in nature with crystal-to-smectic B transition temperatures ranging from 49.8 °C to 91.4 °C. Thermal stability, phase separation, and compatibility of LC/polystyrene composites were also examined. Less than 10% of 15A15 LC by weight in polystyrene exhibited good polymer miscibility, while phase separation occurred at loads higher than 15% by weight. We foresee the use of these LCs in applications that require elevated processing conditions to produce materials with enhanced mechanical or gas barrier properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel ortho-palladated phenylpyrimidine-1,3-diketonato organyls with successively increasing numbers of alkyl chains were synthesized and investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A discontinuous transition from a lamellar to a columnar organization is observed, dependent on the number of chains: molecules with four or five chains from smectic phases (SmA, SmC), the related compound with six chains in the molecule is nonmesomorphic, whereas molecules with seven or eight chains form hexagonal columnar mesophases.
