NONALIGNMENT , *ANTI-Americanism - Abstract
The article reports on the meeting of the Western Non-Aligned Movement in Havana Cuba. 115 nations are to be represented. Many of these leaders have little in common except strong opposition to the U.S. and its Allies. Iran's goal is to solidify allegiances in hope of insulating itself from an American attack. A spokesman for the U.S. State Department says there is little concern, but some disagree, arguing that these 115 countries represent a significant voting block at the United Nations.

INTERNATIONAL relations , *CANADIANS , *AMERICANS , *ANTI-Americanism , *PREJUDICES ,FOREIGN opinion of the United States - Abstract
This article discusses the relationship between Canada and the United States. Despite your efforts at hiding your most egregious embarrassments, the view here is that Canada is still a vast ice-crusted wasteland dedicated to beer and America-bashing. No serious person on either side of the border bothers arguing that Canadian anti-American hysteria is a mirage, or simple hypersensitivity on the part of Americans. It is clearer than Molson ale that Canadians have a serious anti-American problem. Think tanks in both countries say it is true. And we in the U.S. know Canadians quite well. Millions of your expats live and work among us. Canada claims to be America's friend, but sneers at us and bashes us, and welcomes admitted jihadist terrorists onto the continent like they were nothing more than dispossessed refugees. If things are so good in the multicultural, egalitarian quasi-socialist Canada, why do so many leave to come to the fearsome jungles of America? If Canada has a problem, America is to blame. As you celebrate your national holiday, I suspect the truth about your innermost sentiment still applies: that precious and delicious pleasure called anti-Americanism is as strong as ever, isn't it?

IRAQ War, 2003-2011 , *JOURNALISM , *MASS media , *ANTI-Americanism , *INTERNATIONAL alliances , *PREJUDICES ,FOREIGN opinion of the United States - Abstract
Flipping through TV coverage of the Iraq war a couple of weeks ago, I caught an item on an American network detailing how the European media were covering the conflict. Its Paris-based correspondent concluded--no surprise--that war coverage, especially in France, was generally anti-U.S. in tone. In the end, surely it's possible to agree that this has been a primarily American campaign, with significant support from Great Britain. In this case, the implication was that the European media were biased, because their description of the coalition counters the efforts of U.S. President George W. Bush's administration to present the war effort as an alliance of many nations. But the American news media have focused on the American military while largely ignoring the efforts of other nations. In short, it's considered accurate and OK for the American media to emphasize the dominant American effort in the war--but inaccurate and unfair for anti-war countries to do the same. If you care about the issues, sample media from different places, and draw your own conclusions about prejudice. And as you do so, examine your own: it's amazing how often the brilliance or stupidity of a journalist seems to be in direct proportion to how much you, and they, agree.

ANTI-Americanism , *LOVE-hate relationships , *CANADIANS , *TELEVISION programs , *MASS media - Abstract
If you've ever seen the 1992 comedy Wayne's World, you'll remember the scene in which Wayne (Canadian actor Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) meet one of their idols, rock star Alice Cooper. Armed with backstage passes to one of his gigs, they end up in a room with Cooper's entourage, when the man himself appears and starts talking to them. Wayne and Garth respond by doing the first thing that seems natural -- they fling themselves, bowing, to their knees, and chant: "We're not worthy!" Cooper accepts the adulation stoically as his due. I'm reminded of that scene often these days, most specifically by a segment of the Canadian population and its worshipful attitude toward all things American. We talk a lot about rampant anti-Americanism in Canadian society, but what of its equally tiresome evil twin, those Canadians who think the U.S. is always right? You know the type, and the symptoms: they're forever channel-hopping U.S. television and radio shows and combing American publications, seeking something...anything, that either slights Canada, or makes an unfavourable comparison between the two countries. Then, when they're successful, they write anguished letters to the editor, or columns (a lot of them are in the journalism biz) taking Canadians to task, and forecasting grimly that the only thing worse than whatever indignity just happened is whatever next one awaits. I can't think of another country in the world (outside, of course, of America itself) that has such a vehement, unquestioning pro-American element as Canada. (The Brits, America's new best friends, always temper their relationship with a bit of arm's-length snobbery and diffidence.) Those people who love the U.S. too blindly and too much would surrender our sovereignty and stifle debate in Canada to a degree that Americans themselves would never permit.

CANADIANS , *ANTI-Americanism , *PEACE movements , *PREJUDICES , *AMERICANS - Abstract
There is a rising wave of anti-Americanism in Canada in 2003. It's partly about the perception of George W. Bush as a cowboy. It's partly about anti-war sentiment, which runs deep in this country. But it's largely about America's wealth and power. And in that sense, anti-Americanism is as pernicious as anti-Semitism, rooted in envy rather than grievance. Similarly, anti-Americanism is aimed at Americans largely because they are Americans. It's not because of anything they've done to us; it's because of who they are and what they have: money and might. It's also because their government, unilateralist most of the time, marches as to war with or without the support of the United Nations. It's because their trigger-happy pilots kill Canadian soldiers on the ground. It's because we take in their planes on a day of infamy and their president forgets to thank us even as he thanks everyone else. It's because they think the terrorist problem is at our border, when it demonstrably isn't -- not one of the terrorist hijackers entered the U.S. through Canada, and every alert since has proven to be a false alarm, unless crossing the border to gas up is now considered terrorism. This is a country, after all, where a pre-Christmas poll found that 38% of Canadians thought Dubya was a bigger threat to world peace than Saddam. And Canadians don't get it because even as we live under the protection of the American shield, and live off the profits of our trade with them, we resent Americans. We see ourselves as the "kinder, gentler" place of which the first George Bush spoke. A nation of peacekeepers -- but we don't even do as much of that any more. The impoverished nation of Bangladesh leads the world in peacekeeping, while Canada's contribution has slipped to 34th place. It's in the air, all right. It's unworthy of Canadians. And it's time to speak up for our friendship with "the Americans," who are, for their abundant failings, the only best friends we have.
