Península Valdés, Patagonia, Argentina, is recognized as a calving ground for the southern right whale (SRW, Eubalaena australis) population from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Previous studies have reported that SRWs feed during their calving season, but little is known about their foraging ecology in this area. Here, we collected photo data of SRWs at Península Valdés from 2007 to 2019 to monitor and investigate the SRW feeding frequency and to know whether calves also feed on zooplankton (i.e., the diet composed of both milk and solid food). In addition, we systematically reviewed studies on the composition and abundance of zooplankton to assess the available prey for SRWs in the area. Finally, we examined satellite-derived chlorophyll-a (chl-a) to study if the chl-a variability shows any relationship with SRW feeding. Observations show that at Península Valdés, SRWs feed at and below the surface, primarily on calanoid copepods. We also found evidence that SRWs feed near-bottom. In addition, we report calves feeding at surface including the first-ever photographs documentation. Whales feed mainly during austral spring, with a higher mean frequency in November. A time lag of 1 month was found between highest chl-a levels and the highest number of feeding events observed. Over the 12-year study period, we observed that whales were foraging yearly, which indicates that feeding in this calving area is more frequent than prior studies suggested. Central place foragers such as pelagic seabirds often travel large distances to reach profitable foraging areas. King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) are well known for their large-scale foraging movements to the productive Antarctic Polar Front, though their fine-scale travelling and foraging characteristics remain unclear. Here, we investigated the horizontal movements and foraging patterns of king penguins to understand their fine-scale movement decisions during distant foraging trips. We attached multi-channel data loggers that can record depth, speed, tri-axis acceleration, tri-axis magnetism, and environmental temperature of the penguins and obtained data (n = 8 birds) on their horizontal movement rates from reconstructed dive paths and their feeding attempts estimated from rapid changes in swim speed. During transit toward main foraging areas, penguins increased the time spent on shallow travelling dives (< 50 m) at night and around midday, and increased the time spent on deep foraging dives (≥ 50 m) during crepuscular hours. The horizontal movement rates during deep dives were negatively correlated with maximum dive depths, suggesting that foraging at greater depths is associated with a decreased horizontal travelling speed. Penguins concentrated their foraging efforts (more deep dives and higher rates of feeding attempts) at twilight during transit, when prey may be more accessible due to diel vertical migration, while they travelled rapidly at night and midday when prey may be difficult to detect and access. Little is known on the food and feeding ecology of the soft-plumaged petrel Pterodroma mollis, which is the single gadfly petrel Pterodroma spp. with a circumpolar breeding distribution within the Southern Ocean. Our primary goal was to describe its diet at Kerguelen Islands, which is the southernmost breeding locality of the species. Soft-plumaged petrels fed on fish (71% by mass), and secondarily on crustaceans (22%), while cephalopods (7%) and other items (< 1%) were minor dietary components. Eight-hundred and sixty prey were identified from the pooled 33 food samples, with the 2 hyperiid amphipods Cyllopus magellanicus (48%) and Themisto gaudichaudii (35%) being the main food items by number. Owing to their larger size than crustaceans, mesopelagic fishes were the main prey by mass, with myctophids being the most important fish family in terms of both abundance (68% of the fish) and diversity (10 species). Prey distribution indicated that soft-plumaged petrels foraged primarily in oceanic subantarctic waters to feed their chicks. The oceanic life style of gadfly petrels was then highlighted by a review of their diet worldwide (20 species, 26 studies). Gadfly petrels prey mainly upon mesopelagic fishes (chiefly myctophids) and squids with their relative proportions depending on species and localities. Crustaceans are minor food items for tropical species, but they form a significant part of the food of the small- and medium-sized petrels that live in temperate and cold waters. The review underlines the need for more well-designed investigations on this globally endangered group of seabirds, since dietary information is available for only 57% of the 35 species of gadfly petrels. Seabirds are a highly threatened group, yet the foraging ecology of several species remains poorly understood. Brown boobies breed in all oceans in the tropical region and are common across their range. In Tinhosa Grande (São Tomé and Príncipe), this species breeds in one of the largest colonies of seabirds in the east tropical Atlantic. We studied the foraging ecology of Brown boobies from this colony during the chick-rearing period. Thirty-three birds were tracked with GPS loggers and their diet was analysed from 11 regurgitations, using traditional and DNA barcoding techniques for prey identification. A total of 127 completed foraging trips were identified, 89% of which lasted less than 24 h. Females performed significantly longer trips and both sexes foraged preferentially over deep oceanic waters. The diet of Brown boobies included juvenile fish and squid (Sthenoteuthis pteropus), comprising mostly fish species whose juvenile phases live in the pelagic environment, and only migrate to coastal waters when adults. The most frequent of those prey found was Flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans). The relevance of such prey shows that Brown booby conservation depends not only on the management of their foraging areas and breeding sites but also on the correct management of the coastal adjacent areas that support the adult individuals of some of their prey. Our results suggest that the areas closest to the colony do not have available resources for these birds to feed on and that Brown boobies may be associate with subsurface marine predators or with sargassum patches to forage. Diet selection by a species is determined by comparing the consumption (i.e., use) and abundance (i.e., availability) of prey within their area of occupancy. Because individuals commonly use only a portion of habitat available to them (e.g., a 10-ha home range within a 1000-ha foraging habitat), it is important to quantify forage availability within individuals' home ranges and core areas, and include these availabilities when calculating diet selection. However, studies of diet selection often consider prey availability across the entire foraging habitat of a species and not within individual home ranges/core areas. Here, we explore how spatial variability in prey availability may influence the results of diet selection for juvenile green turtles, Chelonia mydas, foraging in Bimini, Bahamas. Stable isotope analysis was used to determine prey use and satellite telemetry to infer movements and forage availability for each turtle. Forage availability was assessed at three spatial scales: (1) the full extent of the foraging area (2) across each respective individual's 95% utilization distribution (UD), or home ranges, and (3) across each individual's 50% UD, or core areas. Further, we compared potential differences in diet selection by using three selection indices (Ivlev's, Johnson's and Chesson's). Diet selection results varied among individuals and were influenced by the spatial scale of forage items available and the index used. Diet selection variability was observed at various spatial scales and in all indices. Our results highlight the need for careful consideration of the diet selection index and the spatial scale at which prey/forage availability is considered when determining a species' diet selection. Selecting a more sensitive index will help identify priority resources and/or habitats that are important to species, which in turn carries conservation and management implications. Adult Cancer magister make forays into hyposaline estuarine habitats during times of high food abundance. However, as weak osmoregulators, they are poorly equipped to deal with the concurrent demands of osmoregulation and digestion. Therefore, the potential interaction between nutritional status and feeding in a physiologically challenging environment was investigated. Changes in the proportion of crabs feeding, the amount of food consumed, the time spent feeding, and the efficiency with which a meal was consumed were examined in response to the length and severity of hyposaline exposure, and the duration of starvation. Reductions in the (a) number of animals feeding, (b) the amount of food consumed, and (c) the time spent feeding were observed in salinities where C. magister actively osmoregulates the concentration of its internal fluids. Although this reduction in feeding was likely a stress response, the crabs were able evaluate the level of salinity stress: there was a dose-dependent reduction in feeding, and they were able to discriminate between salinities separated by as little as 3.5‰. The likelihood that animals would feed in low salinity increased with starvation. Thus, the aversion to food uptake in physiologically stressful conditions may be overridden by the need to procure nutrients. In the natural environment, we suggest that C. magister are employing an ‘eat and run’ strategy, moving into the estuary, consuming a meal, and retreating to higher salinities to digest. We investigated the effects of body size, feeding strategy and depth distribution on the trophic resource partitioning among the 26 dominant fish consumers in a fish assemblage on the central Mediterranean shelf-break. The fish assemblage was structured in two major trophic guilds: epibenthic and zooplanktonic feeders, according to the position of each predator along the benthos–plankton gradient. Within each main guild, the species were segregated along a prey-size or fish-size gradient into five further guilds. Fish size and prey size were strongly correlated, indicating that the prey-size niche can be well explained by predator size. Fish consumers showed a significant negative correlation between the similarity in prey type and the similarity in depth distribution; most species with similar trophic preferences segregated along the depth dimension. The only predators overlapping in both food and depth preferences were those with a more specialist trophic behavior. These results suggest that fish body size and depth preferences are the two main niche dimensions, explaining a large part of the coexistence between the Mediterranean shelf-break fish consumers. The rates and patterns of feeding and displacement of predators constitute two of the most important plastic behavioral responses that allow individuals to respond quickly to changes in abundance of their prey, predation risks and to rapid alterations in environmental conditions. In this study, we quantified seasonal and spatial variation in displacement (net changes in location in 12 or 24 h periods) and prey consumed of marked individuals of the keystone seastar Heliaster helianthus at six sites spanning 600 km along the coast of north-central Chile. We evaluated the hypotheses that: (1) at sites with low availability (cover) of the main prey, the mussel Perumytilus purpuratus, Heliaster displays larger displacements and consumes a greater proportion of other prey (e.g. mobile species) than at sites with high mussel cover, (2) daily displacements will be correlated with sea surface temperature (SST) and (3) increased wave action will reduce seastar daily displacement. Our results show that Heliaster displacement is higher at sites with lower availability of P. purpuratus; and at these sites, a larger proportion of Heliaster individuals are observed feeding, mostly on other prey (e.g. limpets), which could offset the higher costs associated with increased movement. In addition, wave forces affected the activity of Heliaster negatively. Contrary to our expectations, the daily displacements did not show any relationship with SST measured on the day or the previous days of the surveys, despite the fact that average displacement was generally higher in summer than in winter months. Future studies should examine Heliaster movement during single foraging excursions and determine whether these responses affect the growth and reproductive output of individuals. Such information is vital to understand how changes in prey abundance and environmental conditions alter the behavior and energy budget of this predator and its ability to control prey populations. Temora stylifera adult copepods were fed with four different monoalgal diets and six combinations of the same cultures for 15 days. Fecundity, hatching success, number of cannibalized embryos, fecal pellet production, adult mortality and naupliar recruitment were compared, in order to find the best diet for this species. Phytoplankton species tested were Prorocentrum minimum (PRO); Isochrysis galbana (ISO); Tetraselmis suecica (TETRA) and Rhodomonas baltica (RHO) which were supplied alone or in different combinations and at various concentrations ranging from a minimum of 1 mg C L−1 day−1 to a maximum of 66 mg C L−1 day−1. Of the ten diets tested, ISO was the worst and was unable to sustain egg production and adult survival possibly because adults were unable to ingest this alga due to its small size. TETRA was also a poor food since it negatively impacted egg production and adult survival, as well as egg hatching success, possibly due to the lack of essential compounds necessary for optimal embryogenesis. RHO and PRO were the best foods inducing highest egg production, hatching success and naupliar recruitment. Even if mean egg production rates were similar to those obtained with some mixed diets, carbon intake concentrations with mixed diets were from 3 to 33 and from 6.6 to 66 times higher than with RHO and PRO given alone, respectively. Mixed diets of ISO and PRO, especially when supplied at higher concentrations (66 mg C L−1 day−1), had a negative effect on egg hatching success and adult survival, with a corresponding reduction in naupliar recruitment. On the other hand, mixed diets of TETRA and PRO promoted high naupliar recruitment but values were similar to PRO offered alone. Our results indicate that a good monoalgal diet such as RHO and PRO can be as effective as a mixed diet to sustain the mass cultivation of T. stylifera. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The foraging behaviours and dietary compositions of three co-occurring labrids ( Ophthalmolepis lineolatus, Notolabrus gymnogenis and Pictilabrus laticlavius), which are conspicuous on rocky reefs in temperate south-eastern Australia, were investigated between 2003 and 2005. SCUBA observations at two locations showed that the feeding intensity, and hence the associated effects of these fishes on rocky reef invertebrate prey, was temporally consistent. Relative differences in the contributions of ingested prey and use of different feeding microhabitats demonstrated that the feeding ecology differed significantly among the three species. Thus, O. lineolatus fed on proportionately higher volumes of polychaetes, polyplacophorans, marginellid gastropods (especially Austroginella sp.), bivalves and echinoids, which were sighted opportunistically in a wide selection of microhabitats, but particularly in sand/rubble. Ambush hunting was used regularly by smaller N. gymnogenis and all sizes of P. laticlavius to forage on amphipods, small decapods and small gastropods at algal bases or fronds and Diopatra dentata tubes. Amphipods were similarly important in the diet of smaller O. lineolatus. Larger N. gymnogenis foraged opportunistically over an increased reef area and made greater use of microhabitats that offered minimal prey refuge (e.g. sand/rubble, bare rock/steel) from which common prey, in particular decapods, were obtained. The significant intra- and inter-specific differences in dietary compositions, allied with differences in the use of feeding microhabitats, would facilitate co-occurrence of these three conspicuous species and contribute to maintaining high richness of labrid species in reef systems. Echinoids were regularly consumed by each species but they made a moderate contribution to the diet of only O. lineolatus, which suggests that only one of the three labrids is likely to play a significant role in regulation of echinoid densities in these rocky reef habitats. However, the broad diets and diverse forging strategies employed by these labrid species imply that they have a system-wide influence on invertebrate prey on rocky reefs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On many sea shores of the Niedersachsen coast, the polychaete Scolelepis squamata is the dominant animal species living in the sediment of exposed beaches.The population of the predatory species Eteone longa, with a main distribution in more sheltered intertidal and subtidal habitats, has a certain overlap with S. squamata. In these restricted areas, S. squamata suffers from a permanent pursuit by E. longa during low tide. Field and laboratory studies have revealed that this predator-prey relationship follows a distinct behavioural pattern and is an exploitation of surviving animals: the predator does not ingest the whole prey individual but only feeds on regenerable parts of the body.
