The green macroalga, Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides, is an important component of sheltered low-shore assemblages on breakwaters along sandy shores in the northern Adriatic Sea. Macroscopic thalli of C. fragile are not perennial, but develop from propagules and/or undifferentiated forms in early spring, when the dominant native space-occupier, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, recruits. By mid-summer, rapid growth of C. fragile leads to the formation of a dense canopy. We investigated the effects of juvenile and adult thalli of C. fragile on recruitment, survival and growth of mussels. Two experiments tested the hypotheses: (1) that recruitment of mussels is greater within patches of juvenile thalli (primordia) of C. fragile than on adjacent bare surfaces; (2) that the presence of a canopy of C. fragile affects the survival and growth of mussel recruits. The number of recruits of mussels was significantly larger within clumps of primordia of C. fragile than on bare surfaces. The removal of the canopy of C. fragile affected negatively the density of mussels after 2 months from the start of the experiment, but there were no effects on the mean size of individuals, nor on the size-frequency distribution. The same trend persisted after 4 months from the start of the experiment. These results show that re-colonisation of space by mussels is enhanced by C. fragile. Given that mussels, in turn, have the potential to reduce recruitment rates of C. fragile, quick recovery of mussel beds after disturbances could be crucial for controlling the abundance of this alga on breakwaters. Shape is considered an important attribute of patches, but little attention has been paid to its influence on the structure and dynamics of rocky shore assemblages. Effects of patch shape were investigated from September 1997 to June 1998 in algal assemblages on intertidal shores at Cape Banks, south of Sydney (NSW, Australia). Three experiments were established, in order to separately investigate the importance of three different characteristics of patch shape, namely area, perimeter and distance of the central zone from the edge. In each experiment, responses for sets of replicate patches that differed on average for only one shape characteristic were compared. Patches of different shapes were produced by scraping off all resident organisms, and subsequent colonization was recorded. The range of shapes naturally occurring at the study sites was also measured over 1 year, and the shapes of plots used in the experiments were chosen to cover this range of natural variability. Shapes of natural patches within assemblages were very variable. Consistent differences were observed in patch size, geometry and characteristics of the sub-stratum among sheltered and exposed shores and among different times of the year, suggesting that different disturbances influence the dynamics of assemblages at these sites. The results of the three experiments showed that shape may have important effects on patch colonization. Area, perimeter and distance of the central zone from the edge significantly affected growth of algae in experimental clearings. Responses to different patch characteristics were species specific. Effects of different attributes of patch shape also varied over time. This spatial and temporal variability of responses suggests that colonization processes of patches of different shapes are complex, probably involving effects that can produce contrasting results. Results are relevant to the design and interpretation of field experiments, as they suggest that the shape of plots may affect the perception of patterns and processes in intertidal assemblages.

The submarine cave Grotta Azzurra in Southwestern Italy was explored to determine the biochemical composition, nutritional content and sources of suspended particulate material within this submarine cave with sulphur water springs. Results showed that the total amount of food material and its composition determined the nutritional value of suspended particulate material. The nutritive content and volume of food material displayed important temporal differences. Furthermore, composition and amount of suspended particulates remained constant on the outside-inside transect of the cave.
