Since the discovery of >570 methane flares on the northern U.S. Atlantic margin between Cape Hatteras and Georges Bank in the last decade, the acquisition of thousands of kilometers of additional water column imaging data has provided greater coverage at water depths between the outer continental shelf and the lower continental slope. The additional high-resolution data reveal >1400 gas flares, but the removal of probable duplicates from the combined database of new flares and those recognized in 2014 yields ∼1139 unique sites. Most of these sites occur in clusters of 5 or more seeps, leaving about 275 unique locations (including 47 clusters) for seepage along the margin. As a function of depth, seep distribution is heavily skewed toward the upper continental slope at water depths shallower than 400 m on the southern New England margin and ∼ 550 m in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, with additional seeps clustered at ∼1100 m and just deeper than ∼1400 m in both sectors. Despite little ongoing tectonic deformation or active faulting on this passive margin, a variety of processes driven from below the seafloor (e.g., migration of fluids along faults or through permeable strata, seepage above diapirs or other pre-existing structures) and from above (e.g., erosion, sapping, unroofing) contribute to the development of seeps in different settings along the margin. In addition, the prevalence of seeps on promontories overlooking shelf-breaking canyons may be directly related to the three-dimensional nature of the hydrate stability zone in these locations. As a function of depth, the parts of the slope at the contemporary landward limit of gas hydrate stability are devoid of seeps, and the upper slope zones with the most concentrated seepage were not within the gas hydrate stability zone even during the Last Glacial Maximum. Thus, if the large number of upper slope seeps is at least partially sourced in gas hydrate degradation, the gas emitted at these seeps must have migrated there from greater depths on the continental slope. • The number of known cold seep sites on the U.S. Atlantic margin has now doubled. • Seeps and clusters are found at ∼275 locations, mostly north of Cape Hatteras. • Most seeps are shallower than the landward limit of gas hydrate stability. • Faulting, erosion, unroofing, and hydrologic sapping dominate seep evolution. • Complex hydrate distribution leads to promontory seeps next to shelf-break canyons. Sulfate reduction is a commonly reported process in a variety of continental margin settings that affects the carbon (C), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe) marine sedimentary cycles. However, sulfate reduction in unstable environment (turbidite deposition) is easily ignored, which results in a lack of understanding of the C, S, and Fe biogeochemical cycle. Therefore, to elucidate the role of turbidite sedimentation in the global C, S, and Fe biogeochemical cycle, total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), iron speciation, pyrite contents, and sulfur isotopic composition in sediments (CL94) on the South China Sea continental slope were analyzed, along with sediment grain sizes, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) content, and K/Al and Ti/Al ratios. Based on petrographic characteristics, grain size parameters, and element geochemistry (K/Al and Ti/Al ratio), it was concluded that the mid-section (322–350 cm) of Site CL94 is a turbidite layer. Compared with normal sedimentary environment, δ34S CRS (−39.7 ‰ on average) exhibits a high value in turbidite layer, which could be related to the high deposition rate and relatively closed environment caused by the turbidity current deposition. Furthermore, in situ deposition is virtually entirely unaffected by external influences, and this is the primary source of sulfide and reactive iron in the relatively closed environment. Thus, pyrite concentration in the turbidity layer fluctuates in conjunction with variations in sulfide and active iron. Moreover, the identification and data extraction of methane seeps were further complicated by the fact that the TS/TOC ratio and δ34S CRS features induced by the turbidity current were extremely similar to those of sediments around methane seeps. The examination of pyrite sulfur isotopic composition and TS/TOC ratios for detecting methane seepage requires further investigation. • The abnormal δ34S CRS in the mid-section is related to relatively closed environment caused by turbidity current. • The TS/TOC ratio and δ34S CRS in turbidity deposits are very similar to those of methane seepage. • Turbidity current plays an important role in the C, S and Fe biogeochemical cycle. Abstract: Recently developed analytical techniques to determine the abundances of noble gases in sediment pore water allow noble-gas concentrations and isotope ratios to be measured easily and routinely in lacustrine sediments. We applied these techniques for the first time to ocean sediments to investigate an active cold methane seepage system located in the South Pacific off the coast of the North Island of New Zealand using 3He/4He ratios determined in the sediment pore water. The results show that more 3He-rich fluids are released in the vicinity of the Pacific–Australian subduction zone than at the forearc stations located closer to the New Zealand coast. However, the He isotope signature in the sediment column indicates that only a minor part of the He emanating from deeper strata originates from a depleted mantle source. Hence, most He in the pore water is produced locally by the radioactive decay of U and Th in the sediment minerals or in the underlying crustal rocks. Such an occurrence of isotopically heavy crustal He also suggests that the source of the largest fraction of methane is a near-surface geochemical reservoir. This finding is in line with a previous δ 13C study in the water column which concluded that the emanating methane is most likely of biological origin and is formed in the upper few meters of the sediment column. Moreover, the prevalence of isotopically heavy He agrees well with the outcome of other previous studies on island arc systems which indicate that the forearc regions are characterized by crustal He emission, whereas the volcanic arc region is characterized by the presence of mantle He associated with rising magma. Abstract: Cold seeps along the North Anatolian fault in the Marmara Sea (Turkey) have been recently explored during international expeditions through submersible surveys, seafloor mapping and extensive sampling of sediments, biota, carbonates and pore waters. In this study, we investigated the main mineralogy, carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions and lipid biomarkers in authigenic carbonates retrieved from active seepage areas in the Marmara Sea. Abundant microbial lipid biomarkers with light δ 13C values (as low as −113‰), as well as light δ 13C–CaCO3 values of bulk carbonate (−34‰ to −21‰), provided evidence that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) mediated by methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and their bacterial partners, is the major process leading to sequestration of methane-derived carbon. Diagnostic lipid distributions indicated that ANME-2 archaea and associated sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) as the prevalent AOM-mediating microbes. Diverse non-isoprenoid dialkyl glycerol ethers (DAGEs), including tentatively identified novel compounds, were identified with similar δ 13C values as lipid biomarkers of SRB (−105‰ to −68‰). Though DAGEs are often assigned to SRB, other unknown bacteria closely involved in AOM are likely as source organisms as well. Despite dominant AOM-related lipid biomarker patterns, the stable carbon isotopic composition of bulk carbonates in two samples, from South Çinarcik Basin and Central High, in combination with higher hydrocarbon signatures and environmental parameters suggested that oxidation of non-methane hydrocarbons, including oil, may be a contributor to the dissolved inorganic carbon pool and may also be involved in carbonate authigenesis at hydrocarbon seepage settings as previously proposed in the Gulf of Mexico. Abstract: Based on multibeam bathymetry, high-resolution deep-towed sidescan sonar and Chirp subbottom profiling 32 cold seep sites, already identified in Sahling et al. (2008a), have been studied in an approximately 1000km2 large area ranging from 800 to 2600m water depth along the middle slope of the active continental margin offshore Nicaragua. Ground truthing is available from towed camera surveys and coring on seven of the structures. The seeps occur in different settings on the slope: upslope and along the headwall of large submarine slides, as isolated eroded massifs, and forming linear ridges between deeply incised canyons. The seep sites show a wide range regarding their size and morphology, their backscatter intensity patterns, their structure in subbottom profiles, and their fluid venting activity inferred from seafloor observations. Surface extension of the seep sites ranges from less than 200 to more than 1500m in diameter, and relief height varies between no relief and 180m. Indications of extruded materials such as mud flows are not observed in the area of the seep sites. Instead the seeps are characterized by high proportions of authigenic carbonates. The carbonates occur as crusts, detritus, or single layers embedded in the seafloor sediments. They appear as high backscatter intensities on sidescan sonar images. On some seep sites living vent fauna indicative of active seepage is observed, but gas bubbles have not been observed. To explain the high morphological variability of the features, we propose a generic model including the interaction of several processes: (1) episodic fluid venting and associated authigenic carbonate formation; (2) background sedimentation and subsidence; (3) linear erosion along canyons and denudation on the slope surface. Abstract: The aim of this study is to provide combined new insights into the geochronological framework, isotope geochemical signatures and structural observations of methane related authigenic carbonate settings and associated cold-water corals from offshore New Zealand. The analysed samples are obtained from calcified sediments of three different cold seep areas at the Hikurangi Margin: Opouawe Bank, Uruti and Omakere Ridge. We focused the sub-sampling on aragonitic precipitates in vein like structures, partly still open fluid channel systems and related chemoherm structures in order to identify the timing and signature of focused marine methane emanation. The presented initial U/Th age data set indicates different generations of intensified seep activity and related carbonate precipitation between 12,400±160 and 2090±850years BP. The youngest stage so far, was identified as contemporaneous cold seep activity at the southernmost (North Tower, Opouawe Bank) and northernmost (Bear''s Paw, Omakere Ridge) sampling sites around 2300years BP. Sharing the same water depth (1050 to 1100m) these sites imply regional margin-wide tectonic or hydrological changes as controlling process. An intermediate phase of vein and channel structures within the sediment was detected for a time interval between approximately 5000 and 4000years BP with contemporaneous settings of focused seep activity around 4300years BP at Uruti Ridge (LM-10) and Opouawe Bank. δ 13CPDB data reflect site and carbonate type specific signatures, clustering around −52‰ (Uruti and Omakere Ridge) and −47‰ for the fluid pathway system and the uppermost surface at North Tower site (Opouawe Bank). Late stage precipitates in chemoherm cavities of the latter reflect significantly heavier values of about −38‰. Porous precipitates within open fluid channel systems are characterized by decreased δ 234U( T ) values, exceptional high Th and U concentrations and slightly lighter δ 13CPDB signatures when compared to adjacent rim-like and dense cements. This specific kind of precipitate is interpreted as indicator for phases of less vigorous fluid seepage. The observed occurrence of cold-water corals seems to be mostly depending on the abundance of authigenic carbonates as a substrate exposed to erosive bottom water currents. But, seafloor observations combined with preliminary age data indicate a significant time gap between the inferred end of cold seep activity and coral colonization. U–Th analyses of recent reef-forming coral provided an initial δ 234U(0) value of 146.3±3.9‰ and 0.0013±0.0002 as starting 230Th/234U activity ratio for coral growth in the bottom water. Abstract: Cold seeps are widely distributed on active and passive margins and display considerable temporal variability in terms of gas and fluid expulsion rates and volume, over scales of hours to days. To constrain this variability, two cold seeps, the North and South Tower, located at the Wairarapa Seep site on Opouawe Bank, Cook Strait, New Zealand, were monitored in an integrated geological and biogeochemical study during eight surveys between 2005 and 2008. To ensure sampling of the water column within the flare overlying the seeps the vessel was manoeuvred in response to the backscatter data from a hull-mounted 38 kHz single-beam echo-sounder. High methane concentrations (>100 nmol l−1) were found within 400–450 m-high flares at both sites, and within an 825 m-high flare at a newly identified seep, southeast of Pahaua Bank. Elevated bottom water methane was also found over newly identified mud volcanoes on the Campbell Bank, Cook Strait. The locations of the seeps appear to be structurally controlled with active methane vents occurring on anticlinal ridges and associated with a 30 m-high normal fault scarp on Opouawe Bank. Fluid flow is facilitated by sedimentary layer permeability properties, structural focusing and dilational fracturing on the crest of a large anticlinal ridge, cored by a seaward-verging reverse fault. The South Tower cold seep did not significantly influence bulk sediment and water column particulates and nutrients, although high bacterial biomass, productivity and methane oxidation rates were associated with elevated methane in the flare. The seep flares exhibited depleted δ 13C–CH4 values (−63 to −70‰), characteristic of shallow biogenic gas sources. Incorporation of the δ 13C–CH4 and CH4 concentration data in a mixing model, and comparison of the water residence time with methane oxidation rates, indicated that the primary fate of methane in the flare was dilution. The dissolved methane originating from the seeps was retained in the water column at depths >700 m, with minimal contribution to atmospheric emissions, as confirmed by surface methane mapping. Nevertheless, the South Tower seep was a significant source of methane with a column-integrated burden below 700 m of 5.6 mmol m−2, and an estimated annual emission of 0.5–1×106 mol CH4. The structural and tectonic setting of the Wairarapa Seep provides a useful analogue model for other convergent margin cold seeps on the Hikurangi Margin and elsewhere. This unique, three-year integrated study provided valuable insights into the linkage between geological structure and overlying water column biogeochemistry, and confirmed the value of this cold seep site for long-term monitoring. Abstract: In situ methane emission measurements from sediments are combined with water column backscatter anomalies recorded with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) integrated on a benthic observatory. During cruise SO191 to the Hikurangi Margin (New Zealand), the Fluid Flux Observatory (FLUFO) was deployed at a cold seep site at Omakere Ridge. The sediments incubated in the two benthic chambers of FLUFO contained seep-associated fauna, including small and larger tubeworms, juvenile bivalves of the genus Acharax and some juvenile clams. The first 26 h of in situ incubation revealed low to moderate methane fluxes of 0.01 to 0.4 mmol m−2 d−1 into the overlying water of the backup and flux chamber, respectively. In the following sampling sequence, however, the methane concentration in the flux chamber reached 3-fold higher concentrations whereas the methane concentration in the backup chamber remained low and unchanged. Simultaneous to the sudden methane increase, a significant backscatter anomaly was recorded and persisted for 30 min and covered the entire depth range (100 m) of the upward looking ADCP. Data analyses revealed that a single-phase plume (no bubbles) outburst likely occurred during this time. While bubbles appeared to be present during some periods, plume simulations revealed that the volume of gas required (rate of 8 ton/day) does not support a bubble plume. A second data set was obtained during lander deployments at Rock Garden where visual observations by ROV confirmed the transient pattern of free gas injection into the water column. Acoustic flares and methane concentration increase in the bottom water hint towards a pressure (tidal) induced discharge mechanism. The presented data demonstrate the temporal and spatial variability of seabed methane emission, and very short methane signal lifetime in the water column (hours to a few days) due to turbulent diffusion. Abstract: Many biological seep studies focused on the distribution, structure, nutrition and food web architecture of seep communities as well as on their interaction with the seep geochemistry. However, overall respiration at cold seeps received only little attention. We conducted in-situ oxygen flux measurements in combination with ex-situ oxygen micro-profiles, respiration measurements, as well as rate determinations of microbial methane and sulfate turnover to assess respiration pathways as well as carbon turnover at a seep habitat that was recently discovered alongside the Hikurangi Margin offshore northern New Zealand. This habitat is dominated by dense beds of tube-building, heterotrophic ampharetid polychaetes. Average total oxygen uptake (TOU) from this habitat was very high (83.7 mmol m−2 day−1). TOU at a non-seep reference site ranged between 2.7 and 5.8 mmol m−2 day−1. About 37% (30.8 mmol m−2 day−1) of the average TOU was consumed by ampharetids. Considering mean diffusive oxygen uptake (8.5 mmol m−2 day−1) the remaining fraction of ~53% of the TOU (44.4 mmol m−2 day−1) might be explained by respiration of epibenthic organisms as well as aerobic methane and sulfide oxidation at the sediment–water interface. The strongly negative carbon isotopic signatures (−52.9±5‰ VPDB) of the ampharetid tissues indicate a methane derived diet. However, carbon production via anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) was too low (0.1 mmol C m−2 day−1) to cover the mean carbon demand of the ampharetid communities (21 mmol C m−2 day−1). Likely, organic carbon generated via aerobic methane oxidation represents their major carbon source. This is in contrast to other seep habitats, where energy bound in methane is partly transferred to sulfide via AOM and finally consumed by sulfide-oxidizing chemoautotrophs providing carbon that subsequently enters the benthic food web. Abstract: Cold seeps on Opouawe Bank, situated in around 1000 m water depth on the Hikurangi Margin offshore North Island. New Zealand, were investigated using multibeam bathymetry, 75 and 410 kHz sidescan sonar imagery, and 2–8 kHz Chirp sediment echosounder data. Towed video camera observations allowed ground-truthing the various geoacoustic data. At least eleven different seep locations displaying a range of seep activity were identified in the study area. The study area consists of an elongated, northward-widening ridge that is part of the accretionary Hikurangi Margin and is well separated from direct terrigenous input by margin channels surrounding the ridge. The geoacoustic signature of individual cold-seep sites ranged from smooth areas with slightly elevated backscatter intensity resulting from high gas content or the presence of near-surface gas hydrates, to rough areas with widespread patches of carbonates at the seafloor. Five cold seeps also show indications for active gas emissions in the form of acoustic plumes in the water column. Repeated sidescan sonar imagery of the plumes indicates they are highly variable in intensity and direction in the water column, probably reflecting the control of gas emission by tides and currents. Although gas emission appears strongly focused in the Wairarapa area, the actual extents of the cold seep structures are much wider in the subsurface as is shown by sediment echosounder profiles, where large gas fronts were observed. Abstract: The Eastern Mediterranean hosts a variety of active cold seep systems, such as gas chimneys, mud volcanoes and pockmarks, in water depths of 500 to 3200 m. As part of the NAUTINIL expedition in 2003, the sediments of cold seeps on the Nile Deep Sea Fan (NDSF) were sampled for the first time for biogeochemical and microbiological analyses. Here we compare rates of the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and sulfate reduction (SR) as well as the microbial community structure of a variety of cold seep systems including mud volcanoes, pockmarks and brine seeps. Our results revealed strong differences in microbial activity among the different seep systems of the Eastern, Central and Western provinces of the NDSF, as well as the Olimpi field (Central Mediterranean Ridge). Integrated over a sediment depth of 10 cm below the seafloor, SR rates ranged from 0.1–66 mmol m− 2 d−1 and AOM rates from 0.1–3.6 mmol m−2 d−1. SR was often considerably higher than methane oxidation, indicating that electron donors other than methane were utilized. In general, the lowest rates were associated with pockmarks and carbonate pavements, and highest rates with bacterial mats above the gassy sediments of mud volcano centers. 16S rRNA gene analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), revealed the presence of all known groups of marine methane oxidizing Archaea (i.e. ANME-1, -2, -3) and also of methane oxidizing Bacteria (i.e. Methylobacter sp. and relatives) in some seep sediments. Presumably syntrophic sulfate-reducing bacterial partners of ANMEs were also detected in association with the ANMEs. Several ANMEs formed consortia with unknown bacterial partners. The microbial community structure reflected the presence of typical seep microorganisms at all sites investigated, but differed to varying extents between the different types of seeps. Despite the high availability of methane and sulfate, methanotrophic microbial activity and biomass were lower at the seeps of the Eastern Mediterranean compared to those of other continental margins for unknown reasons. Abstract: We investigated lipid biomarkers in three depth-intervals of a methane-derived carbonate crust collected from a pockmark in the Nile Deep-Sea fan sampled during the Nautinil cruise of the R/V l''Atalante. A diverse set of 13C-depleted archaeal and bacterial lipids were detected along this crust with δ 13C values as low as −118‰. This provides evidence that anaerobic oxidation of methane was the main process that induced the formation of this carbonate crust. Archaeal lipid biomarker distributions revealed the presence of archaea belonging both to the ANME-1 and ANME-2 phylogenetic clusters, with the former predominating. The distribution and compound specific δ 13C values of AOM-derived lipid biomarkers showed no significant variations with depth. These results infer that the archaeal community structure and thus the local seepage environment remained relatively stable during the 5000 kyr period of the carbonate crust precipitation. Abstract: Marine mud volcanoes are significant source locations contributing to the marine methane cycle. Enhanced heat flow, unique chemoautotrophic communities, occurrence of massive gas hydrates and large gas plumes are direct evidences of elevated methane concentrations and the dynamic environment of mud volcanoes. Related to the high concentrations and large inventories of CH4 in surface sediments only a fraction of the methane is exported to the bottom water. This is mainly due to chemoautotrophic communities oxidizing methane and proving a “microbial filter” reducing CH4 fluxes. Although these processes were studied for several mud volcanoes still little is known about the spatial pattern and the areas covered by chemoautotrophic communities or by present mud flows. For this purposes the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano (HMMV), which is located at the continental slope of the Barents Sea, was studied by several dives with the Remotely Operated Vehicle Victor6000. During these dives a high resolution microbathymetric map, with a footprint of 25×25 cm and a vertical resolution of better than 10 cm was derived. Furthermore, video streams of the bottom camera were converted into georeferenced mosaics, providing a detailed image about the spatial distribution of seafloor features as bacterial mats, pogonophorans, both indicating methane oxidation, or mud flows. Based on visual inspection of 2310 georeferenced mosaics covering an area of 46,160 m2, different biogeochemical habitats were identified and quantified on a m2-basis. By application of geostatistic techniques as indicator kriging the distribution of different biogeochemical habitats was quantified and mapped for the entire HMMV. Considering the flat and hummocky area of HMMV, approximately 16% (115,165 m2) of the flat centre is nearly void of any benthic communities. This area is considered as a region of high methane discharge into bottom water. An area of 5% (38,244 m2), located in the south-eastern part, is densely inhabited by Beggiatoa. The hummocky outer part is colonised dominantly by pogonophoran tube worms (37.3%; 276,121 m2) and only occasional by Beggiatoa. Source locations and drainage directions for current mud flows were identified by computation of trend surfaces and consideration of temperature data. This suggests that present mud flow ascend close to the northern edge of the flat unit of HMMV, and that the drainage pattern of mud flows shifted from a westward to a south-south-eastern direction. Abstract: We report on a reconnaissance analysis of the geochemical composition of authigenic carbonates and sediment samples collected from various seepage sites on the Niger deep-sea fan. Our aim has been to investigate whether evidence for the presence of authigenic carbonates and gas hydrates within sediments is discernible from solid-phase sediment geochemistry. We show that sedimentary Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios can be used to infer the presence of authigenic aragonite (Sr-rich) and Mg-rich carbonate phases (high-Mg calcite, dolomite) in cold seep settings. Using Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios, the proportion (wt.%) of authigenic carbonates in Niger Fan sediments can be calculated from a mixing model between sediment fractions of terrigenous material, biogenic calcite, aragonite and high-Mg calcite. This approach was applied to high-resolution geochemical profiles along sediment cores recovered from various cold seep settings (mud volcano, diapirs, pockmarks, gas-hydrate bearing sediments). Our data reveal that authigenic carbonates occur as discrete phases in sediments from gas-hydrate-bearing areas, suggesting that such carbonate-rich sediment layers may represent paleo-indicators for ancient methane seepage in marine sediments, possibly associated to gas-hydrate reservoirs. High-resolution seismic reflection profiling carried out in 1997–1999 showed that giant carbonate mounds occur between 500 and 1200 m water depth along both the SE and SW margins of Rockall Trough. The mounds rise 5–300 m above the surrounding seafloor and have diameters at their bases of up to 5 km. Buried mounds, at relatively shallow depths below the seafloor, are also found. Both individual and complex clusters of mounds can be recognized. Smaller and individual, sometimes buried mounds are found at the upper slope. On the SW Rockall Trough margin, higher, steeper and individual mounds are found deeper downslope (900–1100 m). At the middle slope the mounds merge into a complex structure and form complex clusters with a very irregular upper surface and an apparent lack of internal reflectors (600–1000 m depth). Initial results of high-resolution 3D-seismic profiling at 30 m line spacing in August 2000 in two boxes of 750 m×14.5 km covering a small, central part of the SW Rockall Trough mound area indicate two stages of mound development here, the latest probably of Pliocene–Holocene age. This age, based on the presence of a regionally recognizable unconformity below the mounds, is also assumed for the mounds of the SE Rockall Trough (Porcupine Bank) margin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new deep water mud volcano field (between 2000 and 3500 m water depth) was discovered in the deep South Portuguese margin, as well as several new mud volcanoes in the South Spanish and Western Moroccan margins of the Gulf of Cadiz, during the TTR-10 (Training Through Research, UNESCO/IOC) cruise, in July/August 2000. This work followed the discovery of a large mud volcano field in the Gulf of Cadiz, first investigated during the TTR-9 cruise [Gardner (2001) Geophys. Res. Lett. 28, 339–342; Kenyon et al. (2000) IOC, Technical series no. 56]. The discoveries were made based on a SEAMAP side-scan sonar mosaic and multibeam bathymetry (SEABEAM) collected in the area by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, DC, USA, in 1992, kindly released for this purpose. Single-channel seismics, long-range side-scan sonar (OKEAN), TV-controlled grab, hull-mounted 3.5-kHz profiler and coring were used to investigate several seafloor features observed on the side-scan sonar imagery, in the South Iberia, Spanish and Moroccan margins of the Gulf of Cadiz, which were confirmed to be mud volcanoes. The typical structures related to fluid venting in the Gulf of Cadiz are essentially represented by conical mud volcanoes with diameters ranging from several tens of meters to 4 km and heights that can reach 200 m. Some of these structures appear to be aligned along major conjugate NE–SW and NW–SE trending faults that can be identified on the side-scan sonar imagery. The new field discovered in the South Portuguese margin is the deepest in the Gulf of Cadiz area and includes three new mud volcanoes – Bonjardim, Olenin and Carlos Ribeiro – which seem to be quite active, with near-surface gas hydrate occurrence and a high saturation in H2S and hydrocarbon gases (mainly methane) in the mud breccia and overlying pelagic sediments. Gas hydrates were recovered from the Bonjardim mud volcano. An intensely gassified mud breccia, with one fragment of semi-consolidated claystone with a thin bituminous veneer at the surface, was recovered from the Carlos Ribeiro mud volcano. The fauna recovered consists mainly of pogonophoran worms belonging to several species and undetermined species of Foraminifera. Three new mud volcanoes were also discovered in the NW Moroccan margin: Rabat, Student and Jesus Baraza. These show a richer fauna that includes several species of molluscs, polychaetes, pogonophoran worms, crustaceans, echinoderms and some fragments of dead coral (Madrepora and Lophelia). Carbonate crusts were recovered from the Student mud volcano. The Ginsburg mud volcano, discovered during the previous TTR-9 cruise, was revisited and gas hydrates recovered once again. A new mud volcano was also discovered in the Spanish margin, Tasyo, where evidence was found of coral build-ups on the hard substratum of the mud volcanic edifice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cold seeps have been observed with manned submersibles at many sites on the Tokai margin. Most sites are found on the hanging wall of major thrust faults, within 1–2 km of their outcrop. Few sites relate to purely erosional features. This relationship between thrusting and venting may be explained either by fluid flow along fault zones, by fluid flow along permeable layers outcropping at the fault scarp, or by diffuse upward flow of fluids released during footwall compaction. We use deep-towed side-scan sonar and sediment sounder profiles acquired at the toe of the Nankai accretionary wedge to identify the context of seepage at a smaller scale. Modes of fluid expulsion inferred from observations in this zone include flow channelling along strata, along thrusts, along gravity faults, and along joint fractures as well as diffuse flow. We then combine visual observation and monitoring of electrochemical potential (Eh) to assess the relative importance of seepage sites. We show that bacterial mats are better visual indicators of active seepage than bivalve beds and that the most active seepage sites correlate with outcrops of coarse turbidites, cemented by authigenic carbonates. These were sampled and have permeability high enough to channel fluid flow (1–4×10−14 m2). We suggest they are the main conduits near the seafloor. However, seepage sites are also observed directly on the outcrop of major thrusts, indicating that they do play a role as fluid conduits. We observe negative polarity seismic reflections on these faults below 1 km depth and wonder about their significance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Samples from four geographically and tectonically discrete cold seeps named Clam Flat, Clamfield, Horseshoe Scarp South, and Tubeworm City, within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary were analyzed for their hydrocarbon content. The sediment contains gaseous hydrocarbons and CO2, as well as high molecular weight aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons with various combinations of thermogenic and biogenic contributions from petroleum, marine, and terrigenous sources. Of particular interest is the cold seep site at Clamfield which is characterized by the presence of thermogenic hydrocarbons including oil that can likely be correlated with oil-saturated strata at Majors Creek near Davenport, CA, USA. At Clam Flat, the evidence for thermogenic hydrocarbons is equivocal. At Horseshoe Scarp South and Tubeworm City, hydrocarbon gases, mainly methane, are likely microbial in origin. These varied sources of hydrocarbon gases highlight the diverse chemical systems that appear at cold seep communities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Transport of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons through focused fluid flow systems is a widespread process in continental margins and sedimentary basins, which is gaining increased attention in the assessment of geohazards, environment conservation, and securing fossil energy resources. Studying the abundance, distribution and drivers for this process is crucial for understanding its role in 1) the dynamics of gas hydrate accumulation and destabilization, 2) submarine slope stability and related tsunamis, 3) the plethora of chemosynthetic benthic ecosystems that develop in deep seep sites, and 4) the input of greenhouse gases (e.g. methane) into the ocean/atmosphere system, which may influence the atmospheric carbon budget and Earth''s paleo- and present climate. New ocean exploration tools provide ever more data and improve our understanding of these systems. However, the subject still suffers from a lack of interdisciplinary knowledge dissemination. The ongoing international debate about the timing and the processes that control fluid expulsion in sedimentary basins is fuelled by their implications for structural and petroleum geology. Because fluids expelled at cold seeps originate at depth they represent open windows into the underlying petroleum systems and are valuable indicators for the reservoir systems. They may also help in deciphering past and predicting future climate change because worldwide release of large amounts of fluids may have an impact on the chemistry of the ocean and atmosphere.
