Riverine sediments are important reservoirs of heavy metals, representing both historical and contemporary anthropogenic activity within the watershed. This review has been conducted to examine the distribution of heavy metals in the surface sediment of 52 riverine systems from various Asian and European countries, as well as to determine their sources and environmental risks. The results revealed significant variability in heavy metal contamination in the world's riverine systems, with certain hotspots exhibiting concentrations that exceeded the permissible limits set by environmental quality standards. Among the studied countries, India has the highest levels of chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) contamination in its riverine systems, followed by Iran > Turkey > Spain > Vietnam > Pakistan > Malaysia > Taiwan > China > Nigeria > Bangladesh > Japan. Heavy metal pollution in the world's riverine systems was quantified using pollution evaluation indices. The Contamination Factor (CF) revealed moderate contamination (1 ≤ CF < 3) throughout the geological units, with the exception of Pb, Cd, and Cu. The Contamination Degree (CD) classifies the contamination level into different categories: Low degree of contamination (CD < 6), moderate degree of contamination (6 ≤ CD < 12), considerable degree of contamination (12 ≤ CD < 24), and a very high degree of contamination (CD ≥ 24), while the Pollution Load Index (PLI) estimate the total amount of heavy metal pollution in riverine sediments, with Turkey having the highest PLI value of 6.512, followed by Spain, Vietnam, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Iran, and Nigeria. In applied multivariate statistics, correlation analysis determined the fate and distribution of heavy metals in riverine systems, while Principal Component Analysis (PCA) elucidated the potential sources, including industrial, agrochemical, mining, and domestic wastewater discharges, lubricant leakages, multiple geogenic inputs, erosion of mafic and ultramafic rocks, and minimal atmospheric deposition. This study focuses on the environmental efficiency of ports in China's Yangtze River Delta Pilot Free Trade Zone (YRD PFTZ), a critical factor in advancing the high-quality development of ports and facilitating Chinese-style modernization. Current research on port efficiency primarily focuses on the geographical level, with relatively few studies examining the economic regional framework. We selected the YRD PFTZ port for our study to address this gap. Covering 2013 to 2021, we employed the Super-SBM with undesirable outputs and utilized the GML index method. We conducted a spatiotemporal analysis to assess dynamic and static aspects and used the Tobit model to thoroughly investigate the factors influencing the GML Index of these ports. The study showed that: (1) the overall environmental efficiency of these ports was relatively high with a fluctuating trend of initial increase, followed by a decrease, and then an upturn. (2) From a dynamic perspective, the average Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) Index is 1.549, denoting an exceptional level primarily driven by technological efficiency. The technical efficiency change index is the main factor improving GTFP in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces. The fractionation and distribution of two potentially toxic elements (Co and Ni) were investigated in surface sediments to explore the pollution in Xiamen Bay, a special zone experiencing rapid economic growth and enormous environmental pressure. Relatively high concentrations were observed in nearshore areas with frequent human activities. The dominant fractions for Co and Ni were found to be residual, followed by exchangeable phase. Spatial differences in mobility and bioavailability inferred from chemical fractionations were more pronounced for Ni. Multiple evaluation methods including geo-accumulation index, risk assessment code, modified potential ecological risk index, etc., consistently indicated that pollution levels and ecological risks in the entire bay were generally classified as medium-low. However, non-carcinogenic risks of Co for children and carcinogenic risks of Ni for adults exceeded safety thresholds. This study thoroughly examines three cetacean monitoring methods and assessing their advantages and limitations, establishing a foundational basis for comprehensive information on composition, distribution, and behavior. While real-time and non-invasive, visual surveys favor surface-active cetaceans and are weather-dependent. Local ecological knowledge supplements insights into group behavior. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis efficiently detects species like the narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) and common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), offering non-invasive, and spatially adept monitoring. Furthermore, eDNA provides prey species information, revealing the narrow-ridged finless porpoise's winter migration to deeper waters due to prey distribution. The study identifies prevalent prey species, like the Japanese Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) and Osbeck's grenadier anchovy (Coilia mystus), offering insights into the porpoise's feeding ecology and adaptation to changing prey availability in winter. There is an urgent need for marine ecological environment monitoring in China at present, but the traditional manual periodic sampling and testing has such disadvantages as low monitoring frequency and limited station coverage, which could not meet the requirements of large-scale real-time continuous data for current marine ecological early-warning monitoring. Therefore, constructing the multi-level, multi-system, and multi-space marine ecological environment online monitoring system could effectively develop marine ecological environment early-warning monitoring capacity. In this paper, the concept of "System of Systems" was introduced into the construction of marine ecological environment online monitoring equipment system, and the architecture of "System of Systems" of the monitoring equipment was constructed from two layers, structure layer and function layer. The composition of the two layers, and the difficulties in construction of the two layers were emphatically discussed. Phosphorus (P) is a vital nutrient for the growth of marine organisms. Tidal cycle had major influence on various biogeochemical parameters of the bay and changed nutrients input with the ebb and flow of the tide. Seawater was collected by synchronous continuous observation during summer in 2021, to investigate tide drives total phosphorus (TP) variation on the concentration, speciation and exchange flux between Shuidong Bay (SDB) and South China Sea (SCS). Results indicated that there was significant tidal variation in exchange flux of TP between SDB and SCS. DIP and DOP were the main speciation of TDP in different tidal periods, accounting for 53.9 % and 46.1 %TP flowed from SCS to SDB, and monthly exchange flux was about 21.26 t. Silicon (Si) utilization is not limited to eukaryotes. Recent research has suggested that the pattern of a large contribution of picocyanobacteria to biogenic silica (bSi) stocks might be widespread in the oligotrophic open ocean. We are the first to measure the size-fractionated bSi standing stocks and production rates in the oligotrophic South China Sea (SCS), which has obvious characteristics of oligotrophic waters. The 150 m integrated bSi standing stocks in the pico-sized fractions averaged 23 % of the total; the contribution of picoplankton to the total bSi production rate was 44 %. Interestingly, our estimated contributions of Synechococcus alone to the <2 μm bSi standing stock and < 2 μm bSi production rates averaged 14 % and 66 %, respectively, indicating that the significant and persistent contribution of bSi was strongly associated with marine picocyanobacteria. Furthermore, the dynamic changes in nutrient concentrations, especially in DIN and DIP, also potentially affected the variability in picoplankton bSi stocks and production rates, while the effects of temperature and salinity were not obvious. In this study, we have provided new information on measurable bSi in the picoplankton size fraction and its production rate in the SCS. We have demonstrated that picoplankton contributes a measurable, and at times significant, proportion to both the total bSi standing stock and its production rate in the SCS. The impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the marine food web is crucially understudied in the primary trophic system. We evaluated the seasonal dynamics of PAHs in microplankton in a polluted environment (Taiwan), northeastern South China Sea. Replicate size-fractionated microplankton (55-1000 μm) were freeze-dried, and PAHs were extracted with a 1:1 v/v ratio of acetone: n-hexane, then analyzed using GC-MS. Total PAHs ranged between 68 and 2548 ng/g dw in microplankton, greatest during spring (130-2548 ng/g), followed by autumn (135-772 ng/g) and summer (44-423 ng/g). Spatial distribution varied through seasons but was higher in the southern part (S6 > S4 > S5 > S2 > S3 > S1 > S7), dominated by higher-ring PAHs from mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. PAHs are significantly correlated with environmental factors, especially in colder seasons and lower salinity areas. Suspended matter and plankton influenced PAH transport and partitioning seasonally. The river-connected Dongting Lake (DT) and Poyang Lake (PY), and the gate-controlled Taihu Lake (TH) and Chaohu Lake (CH) are the four important lakes in the Yangtze River Basin. The comprehensive Water Quality Index (WQI), the Eutrophication Integrated Index (TLI(Σ)), and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model were employed to evaluate water quality and the contribution of pollution sources for these lakes. The results show that WQI for all lakes indicated generally good water quality, with DT scoring 73.52-86.18, the highest among them. During the wet season, the eutrophication degree of river-connected lake was medium, and that of gate-controlled lakes was high. The surface runoff and agricultural non-point sources are the main pollution sources for both types of lakes, but their impact is more pronounced in gate-controlled lakes during the wet season. Nonylphenol (NP), a main byproduct of nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEs) degradation, is prevalent across diverse environmental settings. Given its widespread presence, evaluating the ecological risks associated with NP in coastal waters and sediments is essential for the protection of the marine environment. This study evaluates the acute toxicity of NP on ten representative aquatic species from the Bohai Sea, determining the Aquatic Life Criteria (ALC) through two distinct methods. The Criteria Maximum Concentration (CMC) for NP in seawater was established at 12.0 μg/L, with a Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) for water at 15.2 μg/L and for sediment at 33.3 μg/kg. Additionally, a tiered ecological risk assessment (ERA) of both surface seawater and sediment in the Bohai Sea revealed significant ecological risks at various sediment sites. Oil and gas activities are sources of marine microplastics (MPs) but have received less attention globally. This study assessed the distribution characteristics and ecological risks of MPs in 31 sediment samples and effluent samples of 5 oil and gas platforms related to offshore oil and gas activities in the Bohai Sea. The results showed that the mean abundance of MPs in sediment, produced water, and domestic sewage was 205.7 ± 151.5 items/kg d.w., 18 ± 11 items/L, and 26 ± 39 items/L, respectively. The MPs in sediments and effluents were dominated by transparent, rayon, and fibers <1 mm. Oil and gas activities may influence the abundance of MPs in the sediments. The sediments in the area were at a low level of risk, but some samples exhibited indexes beyond low levels. Since 2007, persistent green tides in the Yellow Sea of China (YSC) have inflicted substantial economic and social losses. In response, the Chinese government has enacted various policies to mitigate these impacts. This study introduced an evolutionary-multiple streams framework and employed Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Text Analysis from 2007 to 2023, tracing three phases of policy development: growth (2007-2012), stability (2013-2017), and explosion (2018-2023). Findings indicated that during the growth phase, the most of the policy themes were "monitoring" and "emergency"; in the stability phase, policy issuance by provincial and municipal agencies began to increase; in the explosion phase, a basic consensus was reached on source control and intergovernmental cooperation in the management of green tides. Themes such as "ecology", "extreme weather", and "green tide exploitation" have been emphasized. Our study explored the lateral export of macroalgae and seagrass to the deep sea of the Northern South China Sea (NSCS). Particulate organic carbon (POC) collected from a depth of 500 m off southwestern Taiwan (station T) and Dongsha Atoll (station K) underwent environmental DNA (eDNA) and stable isotope assays. Metabarcoding using 18S V9 rDNA revealed lateral export of macrophyte detritus in NSCS. At station K, seagrass detritus predominated, while at station T, macroalgae-derived detritus was dominant. The consistency in the stable carbon isotope signature between POC and macrophytes indicates that stable carbon is an ideal bio-indicator for tracking macrophyte detritus destination and transformation after it has been laterally exported. This study is the first work investigating the distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in three different edible tissues of the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) collected from seven cities of Shandong Province, China. The total concentrations of REEs ranged from 26.1 to 139 ng/g with an average of 63.0 ng/g. The ratio of light REEs to heavy REEs ranged from 9.78 to 16.6 ng/g with an average of 11.5 ng/g. There was no significant differences in REE levels between the edible tissues of male and female crabs. The content of REEs across different tissues followed a consistent pattern: gonads > body muscle > legs muscle, except for Eu. A significant correlation was observed between REEs in P. trituberculatus and marine sediments in the corresponding sea area, following the principle of "abundance law". Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are legacy additive brominated flame retardant. In present study, the distribution, biomagnification and potential human health risk associated with HBCDs were investigated in six edible marine fish species collected from three bays in the Beibu Gulf, China, between March and October 2021. The concentration of HBCDs ranged from 0.05 to 200 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with Scoliodon laticaudus and Trichiurus nanhaiensis having the highest and lowest concentration, respectively. The α-HBCD was dominant in most studied fish, expect for Scoliodon laticaudus. Dietary source was the primary factor for the diastereomeric profiles of HBCDs in fish. Only γ-HBCD demonstrated trophic magnification in the studied fish species. Surface sediment samples were collected from the surrounding sea areas of the two largest tourist islands in Sanya City, China, to compare and assess the sources, distribution, and ecological risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs concentrations ranged from 31.16 to 163.3 ng/g, with an average concentration of 102.46 ng/g, which is still lower than the levels detected in most other sediment studies worldwide. PAHs from coal combustion (Flu, Pyr, Fl, Phe) showed positive correlations with TOC, Silt, and Clay, indicating that these PAHs are easily adsorbed in muddy and silty sediments. Sanya Bay is primarily composed of mud and silt, whereas Haitang Bay is mainly sandy. This corresponds to the significantly higher concentrations of Fl, Phe, and Pyr in Sanya Bay compared to Haitang Bay. The main industrial activities in the study area are related to power and heat production and supply. The results indicate that the primary sources of sediment PAHs are high-temperature combustion during heavy industrial production, followed by maritime transportation and petroleum sources. Overall, the PAHs pollution levels in the study area range from slight to moderate. Sediment quality assessments show that only Ace and Phe have higher individual risk values. Six stations in Sanya Bay have higher adverse impact risks, while in Haitang Bay, only HT07 poses a high risk to biological impact. Atmospheric aerosol (including total suspended particulate (TSP) samples and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) samples) and precipitation samples were collected in Qingdao from May 2020 to June 2021. The concentrations of metal elements on fog days were 0.28-0.56 times that on clean days; those on haze-fog (HF), haze and dust days were 0.76-2.7, 1.2-3.6 and 1.7-5.7 times those on clean days, respectively. Compared with that on clean days, the solubility of metals on fog, HF and haze days increased by 4 %-193 %, but that on dust days decreased by 1 %-62 %. The dry deposition fluxes of dissolved Al, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd were the highest on HF or haze days, which were 2.2-15 times clean days. The relative importance of each sediment physicochemical property to sediment heavy-metal (HM) contents has not yet been quantitatively evaluated. Differences in the HM contents of mangrove surface sediments among the high, middle, and low intertidal zones, and their quantitative relationships to sediment physicochemical properties, were investigated in Dongzhaigang and Qinglan Harbor reserves, Hainan, China. In both reserves, the Cu and Ni concentrations increased significantly from the low to high intertidal zones; the patterns of change in the Mn and Pb contents were opposite in the two reserves. The Cr concentration was significantly lower and the Pb concentration was significantly higher in the dry season than in the wet season. Ecological risks of HM were higher in Dongzhaigang than in Qinglan Harbor. The deep-water area in the central Bohai Sea (BS) serves as a spawning ground and nursery for fish, shrimp, and crabs. Frequent hypoxia will affect the ecological environment in the central BS. Data from an on-site investigation of the central BS in the spring and summer of 2022 were used to analyze the relevant factors generating the occurrence of hypoxia in the central BS through the eutrophication index E, apparent oxygen consumption (AOU), and Spearman correlation. The hypoxia area was largely distributed in the study area's deep water section, and stratification was the main cause of hypoxia at the bottom. Organic matter mineralization, degradation, and biological respiration further exacerbated the hypoxia. Dichlorvos (DDVP) is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide (OPP) that has been frequently detected in the marine environment of China. Water quality criteria (WQC) is however not available for this emergent pollutant in the marine environment, which hinders its ecological risk assessment. This study, therefore, screened toxicity values of DDVP and conducted toxicity tests on six marine species to supplement toxicity data. The WQC for DDVP was derived with the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) methodology, based on which the ecological risk of DDVP in the seawater of China was assessed. The results showed that the recommended short-term (SWQC) and long-term water quality criteria (LWQC) for DDVP were 1.47 and 0.0521 μg/L, respectively. Most marine waters of China showed low or negligible risk (HQ < 1, ORP < 2 %), whereas some estuarine waters warrant further concern due to higher risk. This study developed an estimation method for the N 2 O budget using 15 N stable isotope labeling techniques, a dual-layer model and a box model, which was used to elucidate the underlying dynamics of N 2 O accumulation in Zhanjiang Bay. The results showed that although the net input of N 2 O during the rainy season was 2.36 times higher than that during the dry season, the overall N 2 O concentration was only 66.6 % of that during the dry season due to the extended water residence time in the dry season. Our findings highlighted that water residence time was the key factor for the N 2 O emission, and a longer water residence time was unfavorable for the efflux of N 2 O through hydrodynamic processes and was more conducive to the production and accumulation of N 2 O within the bay. To elucidate the spatial-temporal impact of invasive saltmarsh plant Spartina anglica on the biogeochemical processes in coastal wetlands, we investigated the rates and partitioning of organic carbon (C org ) mineralization in three representative benthic habitats: (1) vegetated sediments inhabited by invasive S. anglica (SA); vegetated sediments by indigenous Suaeda japonica; and (3) unvegetated mud flats. This study examines diatom assemblages in the Matsu Archipelago, an area influenced by Minjiang River runoff. It focuses on harmful algal blooms (HABs) that occurred between August 2021 and July 2022. Utilizing 18S rRNA metabarcoding and microscopic analysis, we observed a significant diatom bloom during early summer runoff, peaking at 5 × 10 5 cells L -1 . The research reveals dynamic community changes during the runoff season, with dominant genera including Pseudo-nitzschia, Chaetoceros, and Skeletonema. Skeletonema cell density correlated with NO 3 levels, Chaetoceros had a slight PO 4 affinity, and Pseudo-nitzschia showed a negative correlation with Skeletonema. Pseudo-nitzschia, which prefers high light and pH conditions, had notably high concentrations in the flood season and in the autumn. In both, it was dominated by potential toxin-producing species - P. multistriata and P. pungens during the flooding, and P. cuspidate in the autumn. Phytoplankton blooms are common along the Chinese coast in the East China Sea, driven by various nutrient sources including river discharge, bottom water regeneration, and Kuroshio subsurface water intrusion. A notable 2014 summer bloom off the Zhejiang coast, exhibiting a Chl a concentration of 20.1 μg L -1 , was significantly influenced by Changjiang River discharge, and high nutrient concentrations are often observed in the region's surface water. During blooms, primary production peaks at 1686.3 mg C m -3 d -1 , indicating substantial CO 2 absorption, with surface water fCO 2 declining to 299.5 μatm, closely linked to plankton activities. Hypoxia often coincides with these frequent bloom occurrences, implicating marine-derived organic matter decomposition as a pivotal factor. Elevated particulate organic carbon concentrations further support this assumption, alongside increased nutrient levels, fCO 2 , and low pH in hypoxic waters. The water and sediment samples were collected from the Yu River and Taowanbei River during periods of summer and winter. The NCPI, EWQI, I geo and PERI were used to evaluate the pollution degree and cumulative ecological risk of HMs in the water and sediments. The PMF model was used to analyze the sources of HMs in river sediments. The pollution degree of Cd, Hg and Zn in the water reached the severe pollution level, in the rank of Hg > Zn > Cd. Cd and Zn in sediments are heavily polluted, Cu is lightly polluted, Pb and As are within the warning range, and the pollution rank is Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb > As. The cumulative ecological risk of HMs in sediments reached extremely strong level, mainly Cd and Hg. Microplastics (MPs) are the pollutants, found widely across various environmental media. However, studies on the MP pollution in urban rivers and the necessary risk assessments remain limited. In this study, the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in a typical urban river were examined to evaluate their distribution, sources, and ecological risks. It was observed that the abundance of MPs in sediments (220-2840 items·kg -1 dry weight (DW)) was much higher than that in surface water (2.9-10.3 items·L -1 ), indicating that the sediment is the "sink" of river MPs. Surface water and sediment were dominated by small particle size MPs (< 0.5 mm). Fiber and debris were common shapes of MPs in rivers and sediments. Since the 21st century, the Beibu Gulf area has been affected by increasing anthropogenic activities, which makes the coastal aquatic ecosystem extremely concerning. However, the comprehensive exploration and analysis of the long-term scale behavior change characteristics of various water quality environment factors is still limited. Through comprehensively detecting coastal surface water environmental behavior information from 33 locations in the Beibu Gulf from 2005 to 2015, we revealed and quantified mutual response characteristics and patterns of various environmental indicators. The main environmental pollution indicators (e.g., COD, NH 4 + , NO 3 - , and DIP) showed a gradual decrease in concentration from the coast to the offshore sea area, and significantly increases during the wet season. The semi-enclosed Maowei Sea exhibited the most prominent performance with significant differences compared to other regions in Beibu Gulf. The average Chlorophyll-a (Chla) content in the coastal area of the Beibu Gulf during the wet season was more than twice that of the dry season, yet the interaction pattern between Chla and environmental factors in the two seasons was opposite to its concentration behavior, accompanied by a closely significant relationship with thermohaline structure and the input of nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients. The multivariate statistical analysis results of total nutrient dynamics suggested that the Beibu Gulf was clearly divided into different regions in both dry and wet season clusters. The dinoflagellate cysts present in the ballast water sediment of foreign ships in Shanghai Port have not been previously studied. Therefore, sediment samples were collected from the ballast water of 16 foreign ships in Shanghai Port, and the types of dinoflagellate cysts were identified and their abundance was calculated, with a specific focus on the analysis of toxic and harmful dinoflagellates. Moreover, simulations of temperature and salinity conditions throughout the year in the Shanghai port waters were conducted to carry out dinoflagellate cyst germination experiments, with analyze and compare the germinated dinoflagellate cysts under different conditions. Dinoflagellate cysts were found in 100 % of the ship sediment samples, including a total of 9 species of toxic and harmful dinoflagellate cysts. Coastal areas are often affected by a variety of climates, and microbial composition patterns are conducive to adaptation to these environments. In this study, the composition and pattern of microbial communities in the Shantou sea from four seasons were analyzed. The diversity of microbial community was significant differences under different seasons (p < 0.01). Meanwhile, dissolved oxygen levels, temperature were key factors to shift microbial communities. The assembly mechanism of microbial communities was constructed by the iCAMP (Infer community assembly mechanism by the phylogenetic bin-based null). Interestingly, the analyses revealed that drift was the predominant driver of this process (44.5 %), suggesting that microbial community assembly in this setting was dominated by stochastic processes. For example, Vibrio was found to be particularly susceptible to stochastic processes, indicating that the pattern of bacterial community was governed by stochastic processes. The Beibu Gulf has experienced blooms of Phaeocystis globosa "giant colony" ecotype (PGGCE), with noticeable variations in bloom scale across years. However, driving environmental factors and their roles remain poorly understood. In this study, we quantified dynamics of PGGCE cells in 2016-2017 and 2018-2019, and analyzed their correlations with environment factors. The results revealed that PGGCE blooms primarily occurred in Guangxi coast and western waters of Leizhou Peninsula during winter months, exhibiting distinct developmental processes. Bloom intensity, duration, and distribution differed significantly between two bloom events. In 2016-2017, peak PGGCE density exceeded 2.0 × 10 5 cells L -1 nearly double that of 2018-2019. Furthermore, bloom sustained five months during 2016-2017, compared to three months during 2018-2019. Mariculture stands as a pivotal enterprise aimed at enhancing the quality of human existence. However, the utilization of antibiotics and pesticides in the mariculture process poses threats to both the environment and human well-being. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the occurrence, distribution and risk of antibiotics and pesticides in mariculture areas. In this study, 11 kinds of antibiotics and 12 kinds of pesticides were screened in four mariculture areas around Liaodong Peninsula in China. The pollution characteristics of pollutants were investigated in three different mariculture stages. The pollution in the reproduction stage was the most serious, indicating that mariculture may have a potential impact on the surrounding seawater. The study applied a tiered ecological risk assessment method to evaluate the long-term status and trend of the ecological risks of dissolved heavy metals from 2011 to 2019 in the Yangtze River Estuary and Zhejiang coastal waters, China. The results for spring, summer, and autumn of 2019 indicated that Pb, Cd, and Zn posed no adverse ecological risk, Cu posed a potential ecological risk, and As posed an ecological risk. Airborne bacteria along with chemical composition of aerosols were investigated during five sampling seasons at an offshore island of the East China Sea. Bacterial diversity was the lowest in spring, the highest in winter, and similar between the autumns of 2019 and 2020, suggesting remarkably seasonal variation but little interannual change. Geodermatophilus (Actinobacteria) was the indicator genus of mineral dust (MD) showed higher proportion in spring than in other seasons. Mastigocladopsis&#95;PCC-10914 (Cyanobacteria) as the indicator of sea salt (SS) demonstrated the highest percentages in both autumns, when the air masses mainly passed over the ocean prior to the sampling site. The higher proportions of soil-derived genera Rubellimicrobium and Craurococcus (both Proteobacteria) and extremophile Chroococcidiopsis&#95;SAG&#95;2023 (Cyanobacteria) were found in summer and winter, respectively. This paper combines the meta-frontier analysis framework with the SBM-DEA model based on undesirable outputs to thoroughly reveal the mechanism of ecological efficiency differences in China's mariculture. This paper accurately identifies the weak links in ecological efficiency in various regions, thereby achieving a precise evaluation of mariculture ecological efficiency within the framework of technological heterogeneity. The results indicate that under the meta-frontier, the annual average ecological efficiency of mariculture in coastal areas of China during the sample period is 0.586, with a 41.4 % efficiency improvement space. However, under the group frontier, the annual average ecological efficiency is 0.783. The characteristics and influencing factors of phytoplankton assemblages were analyzed in July (rainy season) and November (dry season) 2022 in the Qiongzhou Strait, China. A total of 68 species of phytoplankton belonging to 33 genera and 3 phyla were recorded. Diatom was the most dominant group. The broad-temperature widespread species were the most abundant. The dominant species in the rainy season were Skeletonema costatum, S. tropicum, Chaetoceros preseudocurvisetus and Thalassionema nitzschioides while those in the dry season were T. frauenfeldii, T. nitzschioides and Coscinodiscus granii. Phytoplankton cell abundance was significantly positively correlated with nitrite and total nitrogen concentrations, and negatively correlated with temperature and pH. Red tide algae occurred with high frequency. All sites were at eutrophic level except for 3 sites in the rainy season, which were at mesotrophic level. Haptophyta plays a key role in marine pico-nanoeukaryote communities but information on their diversity and ecology is extremely limited. A total of 103 water samples were collected in northern South China Sea to assess the diversity of haptophyta through metabarcoding targeting 18S V4 rDNA. Furthermore, we investigated the potential genetic differentiation among seasonal occurring Phaeocystis globosa using the high resolution molecular marker pgcp1. 18S V4 rDNA metabarcoding dataset revealed 41 species of haptophytes, with 16 of them as the first record in this region. Notably, six harmful species were detected, including Chrysochromulina leadbeateri, Phaeocystis globosa, and Prymnesium parvum. The pgcp1 marker revealed two clades of Phaeocystis globosa and both of them were present around the year. Clade I was found to predominate in warm season, while Clade III tended to bloom in cold waters. Excessive nitrate input is one of the primary factors causing nearshore eutrophication. This study applied the nitrate stable isotope techniques to analyse the biogeochemical processes and sources of nitrate in the Bohai Sea (BHS). The results showed that intensive NO 3 - assimilation probably occurred at surface in summer, while nitrification primarily occurred in the Yellow River diluted water. In autumn, regional assimilation and nitrification were still identified. For avoiding the interference from assimilation, the isotopic fractionations were further calculated as correction data for the quantitative analysis of nitrate sources. The river inputs were identified as the primary source of nitrate in the BHS in summer and autumn, accounting for >50 %, and the atmospheric deposition was the secondary source. In this study, we examined the persistent pollutant contents [harmful elements (HEs), cadmium (Cd, 0.1 mg/kg) ∼ barium (Ba, 881.1 mg/kg)] and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs; Acenaphthylene (Acy), Acenaphthene (Ace), Fluorene (Flu), Benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) (0 mg/kg) ∼ BaP (10.2 mg/kg)] in bus stop dust (BSD) from Qingyang, Northwest China. The Nemerow composite pollution index of the eight types of PAHs and ∑ 16 PAHs indicated severe pollution. The carcinogenic risk of the persistent pollutant in BSD to adults was 1.6 times greater than the acceptable upper limit for the human body, while the noncarcinogenic risk was small to five daily bus passenger groups. Increasing shipping pressure (SP) deteriorates offshore habitats of large mobile species (LMS) and invalidates marine conservation systems, while the threat of SP to the survival of LMS is not well understood. Here, for the 16 endangered LMS in the western Yellow Sea, we quantified their habitat quality in specific sea areas and conservation capacity of marine protected areas (MPAs) under SP, based on AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and an overlay analysis method for SP surfaces and LMS habitats. Results indicate that three specific sea areas have partially lost habitat function, and their MPA networks have also lost 66.7 %, 59.1 %, and 9.2 % of conservation capacity, respectively. To prevent the continued degradation and extinction of endangered LMS, urgent rescue efforts are needed. The Yellow Sea, characterized by an influx of both natural marine and anthropogenic pollutants, coupled with favorable photochemical conditions, serve as key sites for potential interactions between atmospheric gases and aerosols. A recent air monitoring campaign in the Yellow Sea revealed aerosol contributions from four sources, with the highest mass concentrations and dominance of NO 3 (38.1 ± 0.37 %) during winds from China. Indications of potential secondary aerosol formation were observed through the presence of hydrolysis and oxidation products of nitrate and volatile organic compounds. This study investigates the presence of plastic and non-plastic microparticles in the gastrointestinal tracts of two deep-sea sharks, Etmopterus molleri (n = 118) and Squalus mitsukurii (n = 6), bycatch from the East China Sea continental shelf. We found a total of 117 microparticles, predominantly fibres (67.52 %), with blue (31.62 %) and black (23.94 %) being the most prevalent colours. E. molleri contained 70 microparticles (0.63 ± 0.93 items/shark), 61.42 % non-plastics like viscose and cotton, while plastics included polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and acrylic. Despite S. mitsukurii's limited sample size, the results show that it takes in a lot of microparticles (47 microparticles, 7.83 ± 2.64 items/shark), 57.44 % non-plastics (viscose, cotton, and ethyl cellulose), and 42.56 % plastics. A positive correlation between microparticle presence and total length was observed for E. molleri. Anthropogenic input of excess nutrients stimulates massive nitrous oxide (N 2 O) production in estuaries with distinct seasonal variations. Here, nitrogen isotopic and isotopomeric signatures were utilized to investigate the seasonal dynamics of N 2 O production and nitrification at the middle reach of the eutrophic Pearl River Estuary in the south of China. Elevated N 2 O production primarily via ammonia oxidation (> 1 nM-N d -1 ) occurred from April to November, along with increased temperature and decreased dissolved oxygen concentration. This consistently oxygenated water column showed active denitrification, contributing 20-40 % to N 2 O production. The water column microbial N 2 O production generally constituted a minor fraction (10-15 %) of the estuarine water-air interface efflux, suggesting that upstream transport and tidal dilution regulated the dissolved N 2 O inventory in the middle reach of the estuary. The Shandong Peninsula (SP) is the largest peninsula in China hosting rich economic and agricultural activities. In this study, we investigated the behavior of dissolved Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb and their colloidal phases in the coastal and estuarine areas of SP. Pb and Zn had the highest contamination factors of 0.22-10.15 and 0.90-4.41, respectively. The <1 kDa accounted for 23-57 % of the total dissolved phase. Monitoring the spatiotemporal variation in coastal aquaculture zones is essential to providing a scientific basis for formulating scientifically reasonable land management policies. This study uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) remote sensing cloud platform to extract aquaculture information based on Landsat series and Sentinel-2 images for the six years of 1984 to 2021 (1984, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2016 and 2021), so as to analyze the changes in the coastal aquaculture pond area, along with its spatiotemporal characteristics, of Jiangsu Province. The overall area of coastal aquaculture ponds in Jiangsu shows an increasing trend in the early period and a decreasing trend in the later period. Over the past 37 years, the area of coastal aquaculture ponds has increased by a total of 54,639.73 ha. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which widely presents in marine environment, may produce some adverse effects to aquatic organism. Mytilus edulis are popular due to their high protein and low fat content in China. However, few studies have investigated the effects of PFOA on the quality of aquatic products. Here, PFOA effects on basic nutritional indices in M. edulis were measured, and possible mechanisms were explored. PFOA caused clear variation in physiological and biochemical indices of M. edulis. The contents of some important proteins, nutrients, and amino acids etc. dropped. Integrating metabolomics data, we speculate PFOA exposure triggered inflammation and oxidative stress in mussels, interfered with the metabolic pathways related to the quality and the transport and absorption pathways of metal ions, and affected the levels of some important elements and metabolites, thus decreasing the nutritional quality of M. edulis. We examined the occurrence and levels of 19 legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in 7 species of marine bivalve molluscs collected from four coastal cities of Shandong Province, China. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the most prevalent component, accounting for 68.1 % of total PFASs. The total PFASs in bivalve molluscs ranged from 0.86 to 6.55 ng/g wet weight, with the highest concentration found in Meretrix meretrix L. The concentration of total PFASs in bivalve molluscs showed the following trend: clams > scallops > oysters > mussels. Estimation on the human intake of PFASs from consumption of bivalve molluscs resulted in hazard ratios (HR) ranging from 0.12 to 6.40. Five of the seven species had HR >1, indicating high exposure risks associated with PFASs. Terrestrial ecosystems can benefit from environmental protection policies; however, their impact on marine ecological efficiency deserves further exploration. This study uses China's Ecological Civilization Pilot Zone (ECZ) policy as an example of a quasi-natural experimental study, with data from 11 coastal provinces in China from 2006 to 2019 as the initial sample. First, a Super-SBM model considers undesired outputs to measure marine eco-efficiency, while a synthetic control method (SCM) investigates the effect of environmental regulations on marine eco-efficiency. The results show that ECZ policies can promote marine eco-efficiency and the effect mechanisms of these policies are discussed from national and regional perspectives. Marine litter pollution poses a significant threat to offshore ecosystems, eliciting widespread concern. We investigated seafloor litter patterns in the Pearl River Estuary and adjacent coastal waters of China in 2023 via bottom trawl survey. Average number and weight densities were found to be 154.34 ± 30.95 n/km 2 and 2384.63 ± 923.98 g/km 2 , respectively. Plastic was the most abundant material by number density (79.07 %), and rubber the highest by weight density (22.93 %). Overall number density varied from 40.50 ± 22.50 to 221.13 ± 52.44 n/km 2 , with the highest in Daya Bay and the lowest in Guanghai Bay. Weight density varied from 189.93 ± 71.94 to 5386.70 ± 3050.30 g/km 2 , with the highest in Qiao Island and the lowest in Honghai Bay. The main source was plastic bags and wrappers. The Pearl River Delta and Daya Bay were identified as seafloor litter distribution hotspots. The impact of heavy metal ions on the biodenitrification process remains unknown, which is the key to understand the nitrogen cycle in estuarine areas. Here, denitrification rate and the abundance of five denitrifying enzyme genes (narG, nirK, napA, norB and nosZ) in Liaohe Estuary sediments were examined, and the community structure of nirK denitrifying bacteria was also analyzed. The results demonstrate a significant positive correlation between heavy metal content (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Cr) and the denitrification rate, and the abundance of napA/norB (periplasmic nitrate reductase and nitric-oxide reductase) in sediments. The dominant narG denitrifiers were Pseudomonas, Hydrogenophaga, and Serratia known to be tolerant to heavy metal pollution. Sediment particle size, NO 3 - , NO 2 - , Zn 2+ , and Cd 2+ were the key factors influencing the denitrifying community structure.
