The development of sustainable flame retardants is gaining momentum due to their enhanced safety attributes and environmental compatibility. One effective strategy is to use waste materials as a primary source of chemical components, which can help mitigate environmental issues associated with traditional flame retardants. This paper reviews recent research in flame retardancy for waste flame retardants, categorizing them based on waste types like industrial, food, and plant waste. The paper focuses on recent advancements in this area, focusing on their impact on the thermal stability, flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties of polymeric materials. The study also provides a summary of functionalization methodologies used and key factors involved in modifying polymer systems. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a cementitious composite combining high-strength concrete matrix and fiber reinforcement. Standing out for its excellent mechanical properties and durability, this material has been widely recognized as a viable choice for highly complex engineering projects. This paper proposes (i) the review of the influence exerted by the constituent materials on the mechanical properties of compressive strength, flexural tensile strength, and elastic modulus of UHPC and (ii) the determination of optimal quantities of the constituent materials based on simplified statistical analyses of the developed database. The data search was restricted to papers that produced UHPC with straight steel fibers at a content of 2% by volume. UHPC mixture models were proposed based on graphical analyses of the relationship of constituent materials versus mechanical properties, aiming to optimize the material's performance for each mechanical property. The results proved to be in accordance with the specifications present in the literature, characterized by high cement consumption, significant presence of fine materials, and low water-to-binder ratio. The divergences identified between the mixtures reflect how the constituent materials uniquely impact each mechanical property of the concrete. In general, fine materials were shown to play a significant role in increasing the compressive strength and flexural tensile strength of UHPC, while water and superplasticizers stood out for their influence on the material's workability. Determining the mechanical properties of a composite material represents an important stage in its design and is generally a complicated operation. These values are influenced by the topology and geometry of the resulting composite and the values of the elastic constants of the components. Due to the importance of this subject and the increasing use of composite materials, different calculation methods have been developed over the last fifty years. Some of the methods are theoretical, with results that are difficult to apply in practice due to difficulties related to numerical calculation. In the current paper, using theoretical results offered by the homogenization theory, values of engineering elastic constants are obtained. The finite element method (FEM) is used to determine the stress and strain field required in these calculations; this is an extremely powerful and verified calculation tool for the case of a material with any type of structure and geometry. In order to minimize errors, the paper proposes the method of least squares, a mathematical method that provides the best estimate for the set of values obtained by calculating FEM. It is useful to consider as many load cases as possible to obtain the best estimates. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced cement-based material with excellent mechanical properties and durability. However, with the improvement of UHPC's compressive properties, its insufficient tensile properties have gradually attracted attention. This paper reviews the tensile properties of steel fibers in UHPC. The purpose is to summarize the existing research and to provide guidance for future research. The relevant papers were retrieved through three commonly used experimental methods for UHPC tensile properties (the direct tensile test, flexural test, and splitting test), and classified according to the content, length, type, and combination of the steel fibers. The results show that the direct tensile test can better reflect the true tensile strength of UHPC materials. The tensile properties of UHPC are not only related to the content, shape, length, and hybrids of the steel fibers, but also to the composition of the UHPC matrix, the orientation of the fibers, and the geometric dimensions of the specimen. The improvement of the tensile properties of the steel fiber combinations depends on the effectiveness of the synergy between the fibers. Additionally, digital image correlation (DIC) technology is mainly used for crack propagation in UHPC. The analysis of the post-crack phase of UHPC is facilitated. Theoretical models and empirical formulas for tensile properties can further deepen the understanding of UHPC tensile properties and provide suggestions for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The material undergoes high temperature and high strain rate deformation process during the cutting process, which may induce the dynamic recrystallization behavior and result in the evolution of dynamic mechanical properties of the material to be machined. In this paper, the modified Johnson-Cook (J-C) model for nickel-based powder metallurgy superalloy considering dynamic recrystallization behavior in high strain rate and temperature is proposed. The dynamic mechanical properties of the material under different strain rates and temperature conditions are obtained by quasi-static compression test and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test. The coefficients of the modified J-C model are obtained by the linear regression method. The modified model is verified by comparison with experimental and model prediction results. The results show that the modified J-C model proposed in this paper can accurately describe the mechanical properties of nickel-based powder metallurgy superalloys at high temperatures and high strain rates. This paper presents a study on the mechanical properties of cement-stabilized steel-slag-based materials under freeze–thaw cycles for a highway project in Xinjiang. Using 3D scanning technology the specimen model conforming to the real steel slag shape was established. The objectives of the study are as follows: to explore the sensitivity between the macro- and micro-parameters of the specimen and to establish a non-linear regression equation; and to study the changes in mechanical properties of materials under freeze–thaw cycles, fatigue loading, and coupled freeze–thaw cycle–fatigue loading. The results show that there are three stages of compression damage of the specimen, namely, linear elasticity, peak plasticity, and post-peak decline. Maximum contact forces between cracks and particles occur mainly in the shear zone region within the specimen. The compression damage of the specimen is a mixed tensile–shear damage dominated by shear damage. When freeze–thaw cycles or fatigue loads are applied alone, the flexural strength and fatigue life of the specimens show a linear relationship of decline. The decrease in flexural modulus at low stress is divided into the following: a period of rapid decline, a relatively smooth period, and a period of fracture, with a tendency to change towards linear decay with increasing stress. In the case of freeze–thaw–fatigue coupling, the flexural modulus of the specimen decreases drastically by about 50% in the first 2 years, and then enters a period of steady decrease in flexural modulus in the 3rd–5th years. In this paper, the stress–strain curves of Ti2AlNb are established based on uniaxial impact tests over wide ranges of temperature and strain rate. The Ti2AlNb exhibited the work hardening effect but did not show an obvious yield stage during a quasi-static compression test. In the SHPB test, an obvious temperature softening effect was found, the strain rate strengthening effect was detected when the strain rate was 4000–8000 s−1, and the strain rate softening effect was detected in the range of 8000–12,000 s−1. A function describing the effect of strain rate on the strain rate strengthening parameters under various temperatures was proposed to modify the basic J-C constitutive model. The relative errors between the experimental measured value and predicted values in various experimental conditions with a modified J-C model were less than 5.0%. The results verified that the modified J-C model could accurately describe the dynamic mechanical properties of Ti2AlNb at high temperatures and strain rates. Due to their exceptional properties and diverse applications, including to magnetic devices, thermoelectric materials, catalysis, biomedicine, and energy storage, nanoscale metallic multilayer composites (NMMCs) have recently attracted great attention. The alternating layers of two or more metals that make up NMMCs are each just a few nanometers thick. The difficulties in producing and synthesizing new materials can be overcome by using nanoscale multilayer architectures. By adjusting the layer thickness, composition, and interface structure, the mechanical properties of these materials can be controlled. In addition, NMMCs exhibit unusually high strength at thin layer thicknesses because the multilayers have exceptionally high strength, as the individual layer thicknesses are reduced to the nanoscale. The properties of NMMCs depend on the individual layers. This means that the properties can be tuned by varying the layer thickness, composition, and interface structure. Therefore, this review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanical properties and the application of high-performance NMMCs. The paper briefly discusses the fabrication methods used to produce these composites and highlights their potential in various fields, such as electronics, energy storage, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. Furthermore, the electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the above composite materials are analyzed in detail. This document is an editorial introducing a special issue of the journal "Materials" titled "Advances in Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Polymeric Materials." The issue features papers on various topics related to the thermomechanical and electrical properties of polymers and their composites. In this paper, a one-step hot extrusion dual-stage solution treatment method is employed to fabricate high-strength and tough T-shaped complex cross-section 7055 (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr) alloy profiles, and a detailed investigation is conducted on the microstructure and mechanical properties. The results indicate that the comprehensive mechanical properties of the 7055 aluminum extruded alloy using the two-stage solution aging treatment are excellent. This is particularly evident in the balance between strength and ductility, where outstanding strength is accompanied by a plasticity that is maintained at 13.2%. During the extrusion process, the deformation textures are mainly composed of brass and copper, forming a 15.1% recrystallization texture Cube. In addition, the equilibrium phase η(MgZn2) precipitated in the grain is the main strengthening phase, and there are large discontinuous grain boundary precipitates at the grain boundary, which hinders the grain boundary dislocation movement and has great influence on the mechanical properties of alloy materials. In the quest to enhance the mechanical properties of CuP alloys, particularly focusing on the Cu3P phase, this study introduces a comprehensive investigation into the effects of various alloying elements on the alloy's performance. In this paper, the first principle of density universal function theory and the projection-enhanced wave method under VASP 5.4.4 software are used to recalculate the lattice constants, evaluate the lattice stability, and explore the mechanical properties of selected doped elements such as In, Si, V, Al, Bi, Nb, Sc, Ta, Ti, Y and Zr, including shear, stiffness, compression, and plasticity. The investigation reveals that strategic doping with In and Si significantly enhances shear resistance and stiffness, while V addition notably augments compressive resistance. Furthermore, incorporating Al, Bi, Nb, Sc, Ta, Ti, V, Y, and Zr has substantially improved plasticity, indicating a broad spectrum of mechanical enhancement through precise alloying. Crucially, the validation of our computational models is demonstrated through hardness experiments on Si and Sn-doped specimens, corroborating the theoretical predictions. Additionally, a meticulous analysis of the states' density further confirms our computational approach's accuracy and reliability. This study highlights the potential of targeted alloying to tailor the mechanical properties of Cu3P alloys and establishes a robust theoretical framework for predicting the effects of doping in metallic alloys. The findings presented herein offer valuable insights and a novel perspective on material design and optimization, marking a significant stride toward developing advanced materials with customized mechanical properties. The nanoscale Cu-rich precipitates (CRPs) are one of the most critical microstructural features responsible for degrading the mechanical properties of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels. The prospect of the rapid regeneration of the service performance of degraded materials through electropulsing is attractive, and electropulsing has been proven to have the application potential to eliminate the CRPs and recover the mechanical properties of RPV materials. However, few studies have investigated the secondary service issue of electropulsing. This paper provides experimental findings from microstructural investigations and property evaluations of a FeCu RPV model alloy subjected to re-aging following recovery electropulsing and annealing treatments. The evolution behavior of CRPs and the changes in the hardness of the alloy during the re-aging process after electropulsing treatment were consistent with the initial aging process, while the re-aging process of the annealing treatment group was quite different from the initial aging. The difference between the electropulsing and annealing treatment groups was that the annealing treatment failed to eliminate the precipitates completely, leaving behind some large precipitates. A high strain rate occurs when the strain rate exceeds 100 s−1. The mechanical behavior of materials at a high strain rate is different from that at middle and low strain rates. In order to study the dynamic compressive mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPSFRC) at high strain rates, an electro-hydraulic servo universal testing machine and a separate Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with a diameter of 120 mm were used, respectively. A quasi-static compression test (strain rate 0.001 s−1) and impact compression test with a strain rate range of 90~200 s−1 were carried out to study the failure process, failure mode, and stress–strain curve characteristics of UHPSFRC at different strain rates and quantify the strain rate strengthening effect and fiber toughening effect. Based on the statistical damage theory and energy conversion principle, a dynamic damage constitutive model considering the effects of strain rate and fiber content was constructed. The results showed that the rate correlation of UHPSFRC and the fiber toughening properties showed a certain coupling competition mechanism. When the fiber content was less than 1.5%, with an increase in the steel fiber content, the crack initiation and propagation time of the specimen was extended, and the strain rate sensitivity gradually decreased. When the fiber content was 2%, the impact compressive strength of the specimen was optimal. Compared with UHPC, the dynamic increase factor (DIF) of UHPSFRC was significantly lower. The dynamic damage constitutive model established in this paper, considering the influence of strain rate and fiber content, has a good applicability and can describe the mechanical behavior of UHPSFRC at a high strain rate. For many industrial applications, the simultaneous presence in a material of different functional properties is necessary. The main interest lies in making a single material more versatile and durable, less fragile and more efficient. In this study, two concomitant properties in the same material were mainly studied: resistance to cracking and the increase in its hydrophobic properties. The chosen process was the sol-gel route due to its versatility and the ease of formulating materials from various precursors in order to obtain (multi)functional materials. In this paper, sol-gel coatings were prepared with tetraethoxysilane, methyltrimethoxysilane and diethoxydimethylsilane as precursors. Tetraethoxysilane was mainly used to improve the material's mechanical properties, especially hardness, and silicon oil was added to improve its hydrophobic behavior. The integration of silicon oil was monitored via 29Si NMR. Microstructural characterizations were carried out to correlate the multi-scale properties with the microstructure of the derived films. Young's modulus and hardness were measured to highlight the effect of key formulation parameters on the mechanical strength of the coatings. This paper presents a new anisotropic visco-hyperelastic constitutive model for finite bending of an incompressible rectangular elastomeric material. The proposed approach is based on the Mooney–Rivlin anisotropic strain energy function and non-linear visco-hyperelastic method. In this study, we aim to examine the mechanical response of a reinforced viscoelastic rectangular bar with a group of fibers under bending. Anisotropic materials are typically composed of one (or more) family of reinforcing fibers embedded within a soft matrix material. This operation may lead to an enhancement in the strength and stiffness of soft materials. In addition, a finite element simulation is carried out to validate the accuracy of the analytical solution. In this research, the well-known stress relaxation test, as well as the multi-step relaxation test, are examined both analytically and numerically. The results obtained from the analytical solution are found to be in good agreement with those from the finite element method. Therefore, it can be deduced that the proposed model is competent in describing the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced materials when subjected to finite bending deformations.
