In this study, we synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) of varying sizes and morphologies using the solvothermal method and incorporated them as additives into carbonyl iron magnetorheological fluids (CI-MRFs). We tested the shear stress, yield stress, viscosity and storage modulus of the MRFs using a magnetorheometer to investigate how the size and morphology of Fe3O4 NPs influence the performance of MRFs. Our results indicate that the size of the additive nanoparticles significantly enhances the MR properties of MRFs more than their morphological attributes. This enhancement results from optimizing and stabilizing the CI magnetic chain structure of the nanoparticles in the presence of a magnetic field. Specifically, MRFs with Fe3O4 NPs averaging 250 nm in size exhibit higher yield stress and storage modulus and show increased resistance to shear strains. Although the nanoparticle morphology has a modest effect on the rheological properties of MRFs, hexahedral and octahedral particles can enhance rheological properties through increased internal friction compared to spherical particles. Additionally, Fe3O4 NPs of different sizes and morphologies improve the sedimentation stability of MRFs, with those around 250 nm being particularly effective at slowing down sedimentation. Both hexahedral and octahedral Fe3O4 NPs slow down sedimentation more effectively than spherical Fe3O4 NPs. Aluminum–air (Al–air) batteries are considered one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. In this paper, we carry out an orthogonal experimental study on the SLM printing process parameters in 3D-printed Al–air battery anodes. The surface roughness, densification, and discharge performance of the electrodes under different process parameters are observed to reveal the effects of different process parameters on the forming quality and discharge performance of aluminum–air battery anodes. The results show that the laser power is the most important factor affecting the surface roughness of the porous aluminum anode, and the scanning spacing is the most important factor affecting the densification. The best printing parameters for the porous aluminum anode can be obtained when the laser power is 325 W, the scanning speed is 1000 mm/s, the scanning spacing is 0.12 mm, and the thickness of the powder spread is 0.03 mm. At this time, the surface roughness of the porous aluminum anode obtained by this process parameter is 15.01 μm, the densification is 94.97%, and the discharge is stable with a high value. Ferroelectric materials, with their spontaneous electric polarization, are renewing research enthusiasm for their deployment in high-performance micro/nano energy harvesting devices such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Here, the introduction of ferroelectric materials into the triboelectric interface not only significantly enhances the energy harvesting efficiency, but also drives TENGs into the era of intelligence and integration. The primary objective of the following paper is to tackle the newest innovations in TENGs based on ferroelectric materials. For this purpose, we begin with discussing the fundamental idea and then introduce the current progress with TENGs that are built on the base of ferroelectric materials. Various strategies, such as surface engineering, either in the micro or nano scale, are discussed, along with the environmental factors. Although our focus is on the enhancement of energy harvesting efficiency and output power density by utilizing ferroelectric materials, we also highlight their incorporation in self-powered electronics and sensing systems, where we analyze the most favorable and currently accessible options in attaining device intelligence and multifunctionality. This paper reports the results of our study on electrochemical polishing of titanium and a Ti-based alloy using non-aqueous electrolyte. It was shown that electropolishing ensured the removal of surface defects, thereby providing surface smoothing and decreasing surface roughness. The research was conducted using samples made of titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy, as well as implant system elements: implant analog, multiunit, and healing screw. Electropolishing was carried out under a constant voltage (10–15 V) with a specified current density. The electrolyte used contained methanol and sulfuric acid. The modified surface was subjected to a thorough analysis regarding its surface morphology, chemical composition, and physicochemical properties. Scanning electron microscope images and profilometer tests of roughness confirmed significantly smoother surfaces after electropolishing. The surface profile analysis of processed samples also yielded satisfactory results, showing less imperfections than before modification. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates are used in many applications because of their availability, high mechanical properties, and cost-effectiveness. Fiber defects in the form of waviness or wrinkles can occur during the production of multilayered laminates. When curved laminates of significant thickness are produced, the likelihood of such defects increases. Studies have confirmed that fiber deformation during manufacture leads to a reduction in the mechanical properties of laminates. Therefore, early detection of such defects is essential. The main part of this paper deals with research into the possibility of using active infrared thermography to detect wrinkles in curved multilayered GFRP laminates. The size of the artificial wrinkles was assessed by analyzing scans and microimages. The shape deformations of the samples were evaluated by comparing the samples with the mold and the assumed nominal shape. The influence of the out-of-autoclave manufacturing process on the reduction in wrinkles formed without significantly affecting the internal structure of the laminate is presented in this work. This research demonstrated the ability to detect wrinkles in thick curved laminates using active infrared thermography. However, it also showed how the interpretation of the thermographic results is affected by the curvature of the structure, the lack of uniform heating, and the configuration of the thermographic setup. In industrial production, the deformation inhomogeneity after metal forging affects the mechanical properties of various parts of the forgings. The question of whether the organization and mechanical properties of β-titanium alloy can be improved by controlling the amount of forging deformation needs to be answered. Therefore, in this paper, a new sub-stable β-Ti alloy TB 18 (Ti-5.3Cr-4.9Mo4.9V-4.3Al-0.9Nb-0.3Fe) was subjected to three different levels of deformation, as well as solid solution-aging treatments, and the variation rules of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. During the solid solution process, the texture evolution pattern of the TB18 alloy at low deformation (20–40%) is mainly rotational cubic texture deviated into α-fiber texture; at high deformation (60%), the main components of the deformed texture are α-fiber texture with a specific orientation of (114)<1 13 - 3>. After subsequent static recrystallization, the α-fiber texture is deviated to an α*-fiber texture, while the specific orientation (114)<1 13 - 3> can still be inherited as a major component of the recrystallized texture. The plasticity of the alloy in the normal direction (ND) after the solid solution is influenced by the existence of the <110>//ND texture, and the plasticity of the alloy in the ND direction after aging is determined by a combination of the volume fraction of the <110>//ND texture in the matrix phase and the volume fraction of [11 2 - 0]α//ND in the α phase. The results show that it is feasible to change the characteristics of the recrystallization texture of TB18 by controlling the deformation level of hot forging, thus realizing the modulation of the mechanical properties. Due to safety problems caused by the use of organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries and the high production cost brought by the limited lithium resources, water-based zinc-ion batteries have become a new research focus in the field of energy storage due to their low production cost, safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. This paper focused on vanadium dioxide and expanded graphite (EG) composite cathode materials. Given the cycling problem caused by the structural fragility of vanadium dioxide in zinc-ion batteries, the feasibility of preparing a new composite material is explored. The EG/VO2 composites were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, and compared with the aqueous zinc-ion batteries assembled with a single type of VO2 under the same conditions, the electrode materials composited with high-purity sulfur-free expanded graphite showed more excellent capacity, cycling performance, and multiplicity performance, and the EG/VO2 composites possessed a high discharge ratio of 345 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, and the Coulombic efficiency was close to 100%. The EG/VO2 composite has a high specific discharge capacity of 345 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 with a Coulombic efficiency close to 100%, a capacity retention of 77% after 100 cycles, and 277.8 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 78% at a 20-fold increase in current density. The long cycle test data demonstrated that the composite with expanded graphite effectively improved the cycling performance of vanadium-based materials, and the composite maintained a stable Coulombic efficiency of 100% at a high current density of 2 A/g and still maintained a specific capacity of 108.9 mAh/g after 2000 cycles. Ultra-thin 304 stainless steel can be used to flexibly display substrates after they have been subjected to chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). The thickness of the chemical oxide layer directly affects the polishing efficiency and surface quality of 304 stainless steel. In the study presented in the following paper, the thickness variation of the chemical oxide layer of 304 stainless steel was analyzed following electrochemical corrosion under different oxidant concentration conditions. Furthermore, the impact of the oxidant concentration on the grooves, chips, and scratch depth–displacement–load curves was investigated during a nano-scratching experiment. Through this process, we were able to reveal the chemical reaction mechanism between 304 stainless steel materials and oxidizers. The corrosion rate was found to be faster at 8% oxidant content. Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements are a promising alternative to Portland clinker, however, a thorough understanding of their properties is needed for their broader use in the industry. One of the topics that requires a good understanding is the effect of the w/c ratio on the properties of CSA cements. To this end, the aim of this paper was to provide research into the effects of a w/c ratio in the range of 0.45–0.6 on the properties of fresh and hardened CSA pastes and mortars. For fresh mortars, consistency and setting time, as well as plastic shrinkage tests, were conducted, and were complemented by hydration heat tests, carried out on pastes. For hardened mortars, tests of compressive and flexural strength and dry shrinkage, as well as SEM photography, were conducted. It was found that, regardless of a higher hydration rate, the increase in w/c ratio decreased flexural and compressive strength, as well as shrinkage, while increasing consistency, setting time, and hydration heat. Also observed was a significant decrease in strength between 3 and 7 days of curing in mortars with a high w/c ratio. It can be concluded that, regardless of the hydration rate, low w/c ratios in CSA mortars provide better properties than high w/c ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethanol possesses high economic value, but as an industrial waste, it poses harm to human health and the environment. The paper describes the preparation of a thermoplastic polyurethane-poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (TPU-PNIPAM) copolymer designed to selectively uptake alcohol in aqueous solution. The material was created by bonding TPU and PNIPAM together through intermolecular hydrogen bonds, enhancing its hydrophobic properties and making it easier to interact with alcohol molecules. As the amount of PNIPAM in TPU increases, the number of hydrophobic isopropyl groups in TPU-PNIPAM also increases, leading to an enhanced selective uptake ability of TPU-PNIPAM for alcohols in aqueous solution. When the temperature reaches 55 °C, the hydrophobic groups in TPU-PNIPAM are more exposed, further enhancing the selective uptake ability of TPU-PNIPAM for alcohols in aqueous solution. TPU-PNIPAM demonstrates selective preferential uptake for various concentrations and types of alcohol in aqueous solutions. The material's selective uptake performance for alcohols increases with their hydrophobicity, so TPU-PNIPAM exhibited the best adsorption performance for a 10 wt% n-propanol solution under the combined effect of steric hindrance. In addition, TPU-PNIPAM exhibited selective adsorption for other organic solvents, which demonstrated the universality of TPU-PNIPAM in removing contaminants from aqueous solutions. In this paper, we study the influence of densified microsilica and colloidal nanosilica admixtures on the mechanical strength and the microstructural characteristics of special mortars used for immobilizing radioactive concrete waste. The experimental program focused on the replacement of cement with micro- and/or nanosilica, in different proportions, in the basic composition of a mortar made with recycled aggregates. The technical criteria imposed for such cementitious systems, used for the encapsulation of low-level radioactive waste, imply high fluidity, increased mechanical strength and lack of segregation and of bleeding. We aimed to increase the structural compactness of the mortars by adding micro- and nanosilica, all the while maintaining the technical criteria imposed, to obtain a cement matrix with high durability and increased capacity for immobilizing radionuclides. The samples from all the compositions obtained were analyzed from the point of view of mechanical strength. Also, micro- and nanosilica as well as samples of the optimal mortar compositions were analyzed physically and microstructurally. Experimental data showed that the mortar samples present maximum compressive strength for a content between 6 and 7.5% wt. of microsilica, respectively, for a content of 2.25% wt. nanosilica. The obtained results suggest a synergistic effect of micro- and nanosilica when they are used simultaneously in cementitious compositions. Thus, among the analyzed compositional variants, the mortar composition with 3% wt. microsilica and 2.25% wt. nanosilica showed the best performance, with an increase in compressive strength of 23.5% compared to the control sample (without micro- and nanosilica). Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images highlighted the decrease in pore diameter and the increase in structural compactness, especially for mortar samples with nanosilica content or a mixture of micro- and nanosilica. Additive manufacturing is very important due to its potential to build components and products using high-performance materials. The filament-based 3D printing of ceramics is investigated, revealing significant developments and advancements in ceramic material extrusion technology in recent years. Researchers employ several typologies of ceramics and binders to achieve fully dense products. The design of the filament and the necessary technological adaptations for 3D printing are fully investigated. From a material perspective, this paper reviews and analyzes the recent developments in additive manufacturing of material-extruded ceramics products, pointing out the performance and properties achieved with different material-binder combinations. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the thermal stability of superlattice-like (SLL) thin films fabricated by varying the sputtering sequences of the SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1 and SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 configurations. Our results reveal significantly enhanced ten-year data retention (Tten) for both thin films measured at 124.3 °C and 151.9 °C, respectively. These values surpass the Tten of Ge2Sb2Te5 (85 °C), clearly demonstrating the superior thermal stability of the studied SLL configurations. Interestingly, we also observe a distinct difference in the thermal stability between the two SLL configurations. The superior thermal stability of SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 is attributed to the diffusion of the Sb precipitated phase from Ge8Sb92 to GeTe. This diffusion process effectively reduces the impact of the Sb phase on the thermal stability of the thin film. In contrast, in the case of SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1, the presence of the Sb precipitated phase in Ge8Sb92 facilitates the crystallization of GeTe, leading to reduced thermal stability. These findings underscore the significant influence of the sputtering sequence on the atomic behavior and thermal properties of superlattice-like phase change materials. Honeycomb sandwich panels are utilized in many industrial applications due to their high bending resistance relative to their weight. Defects between the core and the facesheet compromise their integrity and efficiency due to the inability to transfer loads. The material system studied in the present paper is a unidirectional carbon fiber composite facesheet with a honeycomb core with a variety of defects at the interface between the two material systems. Current nondestructive techniques focus on defect detectability, whereas the presented method uses high-frequency ultrasound testing (UT) to detect and quantify the defect geometry and defect type. Testing is performed using two approaches, a laboratory scale immersion tank and a novel portable UT system, both of which utilize only single-side access to the part. Coupons are presented with defects spanning from 5 to 40 mm in diameter, whereas defects in the range of 15–25 mm and smaller are considered below the detectability limits of existing inspection methods. Defect types studied include missing adhesive, unintentional foreign objects that occur during the manufacturing process, damaged core, and removed core sections. An algorithm is presented to quantify the defect perimeter. The provided results demonstrate successful defect detection, with an average defect diameter error of 0.6 mm across all coupons studied in the immersion system and 1.1 mm for the portable system. The best accuracy comes from the missing adhesive coupons, with an average error of 0.3 mm. Conversely, the worst results come from the missing or damaged honeycomb coupons, with an error average of 0.7 mm, well below the standard detectability levels of 15–25 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compound contamination of soil with heavy metals copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) triggered by mining development has become a serious problem. To solve this problem, in this paper, corncob kernel, which is widely available and inexpensive, was used as the raw material of biochar and modified by loading CaAl-layered double hydroxides to synthesize biochar-loaded CaAl-layered double hydroxide composites (CaAl-LDH/BC). After soil remediation experiments, either BC or CaAl-LDH/BC can increase soil pH, and the available phosphorus content and available potassium content in soil. Compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC significantly reduced the available content of Cu and Pb in the active state (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extractable state) in the soil, and the passivation rate of Cu and Pb by a 2% dosage of CaAl-LDH/BC reached 47.85% and 37.9%, respectively. CaAl-LDH/BC can significantly enhance the relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms such as Actinobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, and Luteimonas in the soil, which can help to enhance the tolerance and reduce the enrichment ability of plants to heavy metals. In addition, it was demonstrated by pea seedling (Pisum sativum L.) growing experiments that CaAl-LDH/BC increased plant fresh weight, root length, plant height, catalase (CAT) activity, and protein content, which promoted the growth of the plant. Compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC significantly reduced the Cu and Pb contents in pea seedlings, in which the Cu and Pb contents in pea seedlings were reduced from 31.97 mg/kg and 74.40 mg/kg to 2.92 mg/kg and 6.67 mg/kg, respectively, after a 2% dosage of CaAl-LDH/BC, which was a reduction of 90.84% and 91.03%, respectively. In conclusion, compared with BC, CaAl-LDH/BC improved soil fertility and thus the plant growth environment, and also more effectively reduced the mobility of heavy metals Cu and Pb in the soil to reduce the enrichment of Cu and Pb by plants. Analytical modeling of the squeezing force for aircraft wings and fuselage panels in the existing literature usually assumes uniform deformation of the rivets, while in reality, the deformation of the rivets is non-uniform. To achieve high-quality squeezing force modeling, this paper introduces Coulomb's friction and four critical adjustments to the original equation: the non-uniform rivet/sheet interference along the sheet's hole axial ordinate; the barreling effect when calculating the driven head's volume; the spring-back of the driven head's dimensions; the modified height of the driven head; and the modified sheet-hole expanded diameter considering the convex structure of the driven head. The electric vehicle (EV) industry challenges battery joining technologies by requiring higher energy density both by mass and volume. Improving the energy density via new battery chemistry would be the holy grail but is seriously hindered and progresses slowly. In the meantime, alternative ways, such as implementing more efficient cell packaging by minimising the electrical resistance of joints, are of primary focus. In this paper, we discuss the challenges associated with the electrical characterisation of laser-soldered joints in general, and the minimisation of their resistive losses, in particular. In order to assess the impact of joint resistance on the overall resistance of the sample, the alteration in resistance was monitored as a function of voltage probe distance and modelled by finite element simulation. The experimental measurements showed two different regimes: one far from the joint area and another in its vicinity and within the joint cross-section. The presented results confirm the importance of the thickness of the filler material, the effective and total soldered area, and the area and position of the voids within the total soldered area in determining the electrical resistance of joints. This paper attempts to analyze the random fatigue life and failure modes of joints using two calculation methods. Three kinds of tests were carried out, which were the static test, constant amplitude fatigue test and the random fatigue test, and four kinds of joints were designed. After the static test, the joint was subjected to a constant amplitude fatigue test by selecting different percentages of load according to the static strength. In order to predict the random fatigue life more precisely, two calculation methods were carried out, which were the linear cumulative damage method and the equivalent loading finite element method. Based on the linear cumulative damage hypothesis, the fatigue life of the joint was established as a function of the load amplitude, and then, the random life prediction was calculated by the amplitude distribution of the random loading. Another method was the equivalent loading method, which was to obtain the equivalent constant amplitude fatigue loading of the random loading spectrum. The finite element model was established based on the stiffness and strength degradation rule. The equivalent random life and fatigue failure modes of the joint were modeled. The two life prediction methods show good agreement with the fatigue experimental result, and all prediction results were included in a scatter band of the factor of 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their low processing costs and high efficiency. A crucial component of these devices is the electron transport layer (ETL), which plays a key role in extracting and transmitting light-induced electrons, modifying interfaces, and adjusting surface energy levels. This minimizes charge recombination in PSCs, a critical factor in their performance. Among the various ETL materials, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and tin dioxide (SnO2) stand out due to their excellent electron mobility, suitable band alignment, high transparency, and stability. TiO2 is widely used because of its appropriate conduction band position, easy fabrication, and favorable charge extraction properties. SnO2, on the other hand, offers higher electron mobility, better stability under UV illumination, and lower processing temperatures, making it a promising alternative. This paper summarizes the latest advancements in the research of electron transport materials, including material selection and a discussion of electron collection. Additionally, it examines doping techniques that enhance electron mobility and surface modification technologies that improve interface quality and reduce recombination. The impact of these parameters on the performance and passivation behavior of PSCs is also examined. Technological advancements in the ETL, especially those involving TiO2 and SnO2, are currently a prominent research direction for achieving high-efficiency PSCs. In this paper, results of research on the reactivities of selected biomass types considering their application in pyrometallurgical processes of metal production are presented. Walnut shells, sunflower husk pellets and spent coffee grounds were selected as biomass materials. Their use as potential reducers in the process of metallurgical slag decopperisation is an innovative approach to this subject. The thermogravimetric findings show that all three tested biomass types are classified as highly reactive. The time to reach maximum reactivity ranges from 1.5 to 3 min and, the lowest value is recorded for the sample of spent coffee grounds. The sample hold time of two hours enables copper content reduction to approx. 1 wt% for practically all the reducers tested. A longer duration of liquid slag contact with the reducer results in a decreased copper content in the slag to a value below 1 wt%. Copper concentrations of 0.5 wt% and lower are observed with a hold time of 4 h. The preliminary results indicate that there is great potential for the use of this type of material in non-ferrous metallurgy, which may translate into replacing fossil raw materials and thus introducing the principles of a sustainable process in this case of metal production. In this work, a chemical grafting polymerization method was employed to synthesize EHPMC-g-PANI self-supporting films. Polyaniline (PANI) was grafted onto hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) modified with epichlorohydrin (EPHMC) to obtain an EHPMC-g-PANI aqueous dispersion, which was subsequently dried to form the self-supporting films. The introduction of HPMC, with its excellent film-forming ability and mechanical strength, successfully addressed the poor film-forming ability and mechanical properties intrinsic to PANI. Compared to in situ polymerized HPMC/PANI, the EHPMC-g-PANI exhibited significantly improved storage stability. Moreover, the fabricated EHPMC-g-PANI films displayed a more uniform and smoother morphology. The conductivity of all the films ranged from 10−2 to 10−1 S/cm, and their tensile strength reached up to 36.1 MPa. These results demonstrate that the prepared EHPMC-g-PANI holds promising potential for applications in various fields, including conductive paper, sensors, and conductive inks. This paper presents research results on biocomposites made from a combination of extruded apple pomace (EAP) and potato starch (SP). The aim of this work was to investigate the basic properties of biocomposites obtained from extruded apple pomace reinforced with potato starch. The products were manufactured by hot pressing using a hydraulic press with a mould for producing samples. The prepared biocomposites were subjected to strength tests, surface wettability was determined, and a colour analysis was carried out. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and cross-sectioning observed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also performed. The obtained test results showed that the combination of apple pomace (EAP) and starch (SP) enabled the production of compact biocomposite materials. At the same time, it was found that each increase in the share of starch in the mixture for producing biocomposites increased the strength parameters of the obtained materials. With the highest share of starch in the mixture, 40%, and a raw material moisture content of 14%, the material had the best strength parameters and was even characterised by hydrophobic properties. It was also found that materials with a high content of starch are characterised by increased temperature resistance. The analysis of SEM microscopic photos showed well-glued particles of apple pomace, pectin, and gelatinised starch and a smooth external structure of the samples. Research and analyses have shown that apple pomace reinforced only with the addition of starch can be a promising raw material for the production of simple, biodegradable biocomposite materials. Additive manufacturing (AM) is often used to create designs inspired by topology optimization and biological structures, yielding unique cross-sectional geometries spanning across scales. However, manufacturing defects intrinsic to AM can affect material properties, limiting the applicability of a uniform material model across diverse cross-sections. To examine this phenomenon, this paper explores the influence of specimen size and layer height on the compressive modulus of polycarbonate (PC) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) specimens fabricated using fused filament fabrication (FFF). Micro-computed tomography imaging and compression testing were conducted on the printed samples. The results indicate that while variations in the modulus were statistically significant due to both layer height and size of the specimen in TPU, variations in PC were only statistically significant due to layer height. The highest elastic modulus was observed at a 0.2 mm layer height for both materials across different sizes. These findings offer valuable insights into design components for FFF, emphasizing the importance of considering mechanical property variations due to feature size, especially in TPU. Furthermore, locations with a higher probability of failure are recommended to be printed closer to the print bed, especially for TPU, because of the lower void volume fraction observed near the heated print bed. Stone matrix asphalt and asphalt concrete mixture with 13.2 mm nominal maximum aggregate size (named SMA13 and AC13, respectively) are widely used in the surface course of asphalt pavement in China. Generally, the pavement performance of SMA13 is superior to that of AC13, while the cost of the former is significantly higher than that of the latter. The objective of this paper was to develop a new hot mix asphalt (named SMAC13) whose performance and cost are between SMA13 and AC13. A boundary sieve size (BSS) of 2.36 mm was selected between fine and coarse aggregates. Based on the union set of aggregate gradation ranges of SMA13 and AC13, the family of gradation curves in the forms of S shapes were designed in terms of the BSS passing rate. According to the evaluation of the skeleton interlock of coarse aggregate of the gradation curve family, the aggregate gradation range of SMAC13 was determined. Also, the performance of three kinds of asphalt mixtures were compared through laboratory tests. The results indicated that SMA13 shows the best rutting resistance, followed by SMAC13 then AC13, while in terms of low-temperature performance in resistance to cracking, the sequence is SMAC13, AC13, and SMA13. The sequence of water stability is AC13, SMAC13, and SMA13. Furthermore, the cost of SMAC13 is 25% less than that of SMA13. As an important part of head protection equipment, research on the material and structural application of helmet liners has always been one of the hotspots in the field of helmets. This paper first discusses common helmet liner materials, including traditional polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, etc., as well as newly emerging anisotropic materials, polymer nanocomposites, etc. Secondly, the design concept of the helmet liner structure is discussed, including the use of a multi-layer structure, the addition of geometric irregular bubbles to enhance the energy absorption effect, and the introduction of new manufacturing processes, such as additive manufacturing technology, to realize the preparation of complex structures. Then, the application of biomimetic structures to helmet liner design is analyzed, such as the design of helmet liner structures with more energy absorption properties based on biological tissue structures. On this basis, we propose extending the concept of bionic structural design to the fusion of plant stalks and animal skeletal structures, and combining additive manufacturing technology to significantly reduce energy loss during elastic yield energy absorption, thus developing a reusable helmet that provides a research direction for future helmet liner materials and structural applications. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation into the durability of cold spray repairs to corrosion damage in AA7075-T7351 aluminium alloy specimens where, prior to powder deposition, the surface preparation involved grit blasting. In this context, it is shown that the growth of small naturally occurring cracks in cold spray repairs to simulated corrosion damage can be accurately computed using the Hartman–Schijve crack growth equation in a fashion that is consistent with the requirements delineated in USAF Structures Bulletin EZ-SB-19-01, MIL-STD-1530D, and the US Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG2006. The relatively large variation in the da/dN versus ΔK curves associated with low values of da/dN highlights the fact that, before any durability assessment of a cold spray repair to an operational airframe is attempted, it is first necessary to perform a sufficient number of tests so that the worst-case small crack growth curve needed to perform the mandated airworthiness certification analysis can be determined. Copper-containing sludge is a common by-product of industrial activities, particularly electroplating and metal processing. This type of sludge contains high concentrations of heavy metals such as copper, which can pose a potential threat to the environment. Therefore, its treatment and disposal require special attention. Due to its efficient mass and heat transfer characteristics, the suspended state technology has shown significant potential for application in a number of key processes, including the drying, decomposition, and reduction of copper-containing sludge. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the current status of the application of the suspended state technology in the treatment of copper-containing sludge. Based on this analysis, a device for the treatment of copper-containing sludge in the suspended state was designed, through which the characteristics of copper-containing sludge in the oxidative decomposition and reduction phases are investigated. The research objects were gas concentration, temperature, contact state, and particle size time. Orthogonal experiments were initially employed to investigate the relationship between the influencing factors and the conversion rate of copper oxides. This was followed by a single-factor influence study, which led to the determination of the optimal process parameters for the decomposition experiments of the Cu-containing sludge in an oxidizing atmosphere. The 100 μm Cu-containing sludge was reacted with 10% O2 gas at a flow rate of 1 m/s for 3 min under the condition of 900 °C. The process parameters were then determined as follows: The research objects were gas concentration, temperature, contact state, and particle size time. Orthogonal experiments were employed to investigate the relationship between the influencing factors and the copper conversion rate. This was followed by a single-factor influence study, which determined the optimal process parameters for the copper-containing sludge reduction experiments. Shape memory alloy (SMA), a type of smart material, is widely used in the design of reinforcement and repair, isolation, and shock absorption of building structures because of its outstanding characteristics, such as the shape memory effect (SME), superelasticity (SE), and high damping. It not only improves the bearing capacity, ductility, and mechanical properties of the structural components of buildings but can also effectively slow down the strong response of engineering structures under the effect of an earthquake. It plays a key role in energy dissipation and shock absorption as well as sustainable development. To promote the application of SMA in building structures, this paper summarizes the research on the use of SMA as a reinforcing material in building structures, including work related to SMA material characteristics and types, SMA-reinforced structural components, and SMA isolation devices. In addition, the shortcomings of SMA applications in building structures are analyzed, and valuable suggestions for future research methods are put forward. The sulfur in petroleum coke is harmful to carbon products, underscoring the importance of desulfurization for high-sulfur petroleum coke. This paper proposes a method combining alkaline catalytic roasting with ultrasonic oxidation for the deep desulfurization of high-sulfur petroleum coke. The results show that the desulfurization rate reaches 88.99% and the sulfur content is reduced to 0.83 wt.% under a coke particle size of 96–75 μm, sodium-hydroxide-to-petroleum-coke ratio of 50%, roasting temperature of 700 °C, and holding time of 2 h. The alkali-calcined petroleum coke is ultrasonically oxidized and desulfurized in peracetic acid. The results show that, under a hydrogen peroxide content of 10%, hydrogen-peroxide-(liquid)-to-petroleum-coke (solid) ratio of 20 mL/g, acetic acid content of 5 mL, ultrasonic power of 300 W, reaction temperature of 60 °C, and reaction duration of 4 h, the sulfur content is reduced to 0.15 wt.% and the total desulfurization reaches 98.01%. Through a series of characterizations, the proposed desulfurization mechanism is verified. Alkali roasting effectively removes a significant portion of sulfur in petroleum coke. However, the elimination of certain sulfur compounds, such as the more complex thiophene, presents challenges. The thiophene content is subsequently removed via ultrasonic oxidation. This paper presents the long-term, holistic results of research into an innovative heat accumulator based on an organic phase-change material in the form of a mixture of aliphatic alkanes, molecular silica sieves, carbon recyclate and epoxy and cement matrices. The research included chemical testing of vacuum soaking of molecular silica sieves with a liquid phase-change material. The results proved an improvement in the heat storage efficiency of the heat accumulators due to the addition of carbon recyclate by 28%, while increasing the heat storage time by 134 min, and a reduction in PCM leakage due to the use of molecular silica sieves. In addition to its cognitive scientific value, another research objective of the work achieved was to obtain response functions in the form of approximating polynomials. They provide a useful, validated and verified tool to predict the physical and chemical characteristics of heat accumulators with different contents of individual components. As part of the ongoing research, technical problems related to leak-proofing assurance and matrix selection for organic phase-change materials were also solved. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into PVA fiber modified with SiO2 to improve the mechanical properties of oil-well cements. Specifically, SiO2 was coated onto the surface of polyvinyl alcohol fiber (PVAF) as its silicon source via a sol-gel process by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), while hydrochloric acid and ammonia were respectively used as the catalyst in the sol (hydrolysis) and the gel (condensation) processes. The PVAF microstructure was then characterized with the scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the effects of the modified PVAF on both mechanical and rheological properties of oil-well cements were examined. Due to the fact that SiO2 can be uniformly coated onto the PVAF surface, such modified PVAF can slightly improve the rheology of the cement slurry, while the raw PVAF exhibits poor dispersion at a high dosage. Compared with those of cement stone without PVAF after curing for 28 days at 60 °C, the flexural strength, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the cement stone incorporated with the modified PVAFs were enhanced by 37.7%, 66.1%, and 50.0%, respectively. The SEM test (EDX) test, XRD test, and thermogravimetric test prove that the SiO2 coating on the PVAF surface can promote the hydration of cement clinker and can react with Ca(OH)2 to generate CSH gel. The SiO2 grafted onto the surface of PVAFs can improve the bond strength at the fiber/cement matrix interface, thus improving the mechanical properties of cement stone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). Robotic Friction Stir Welding (RFSW) technology integrates the advantages of friction stir welding and industrial robots, finding extensive applications and research in aerospace, shipbuilding, and new energy vehicles. However, the high-speed rotational process of friction stir welding combined with the low stiffness characteristics of serial industrial robots inevitably introduces vibrations during the welding process. This paper investigates the vibration patterns and impacts during the RFSW process and proposes an active vibration avoidance control method for variable speed welding based on constant heat input. This method utilizes a vibration feedback strategy that adjusts the spindle speed actively if the end-effector's vibration exceeds a threshold, thereby avoiding the modal frequencies of the robot at its current pose. Concurrently, it calculates and adjusts the welding speed of the robot according to the thermal equilibrium equation to maintain constant heat input. A simplified dynamic model of the RFSW robot was established, and the feasibility of this method was validated through simulation experiments. This paper presents a study on the mechanical properties of cement-stabilized steel-slag-based materials under freeze–thaw cycles for a highway project in Xinjiang. Using 3D scanning technology the specimen model conforming to the real steel slag shape was established. The objectives of the study are as follows: to explore the sensitivity between the macro- and micro-parameters of the specimen and to establish a non-linear regression equation; and to study the changes in mechanical properties of materials under freeze–thaw cycles, fatigue loading, and coupled freeze–thaw cycle–fatigue loading. The results show that there are three stages of compression damage of the specimen, namely, linear elasticity, peak plasticity, and post-peak decline. Maximum contact forces between cracks and particles occur mainly in the shear zone region within the specimen. The compression damage of the specimen is a mixed tensile–shear damage dominated by shear damage. When freeze–thaw cycles or fatigue loads are applied alone, the flexural strength and fatigue life of the specimens show a linear relationship of decline. The decrease in flexural modulus at low stress is divided into the following: a period of rapid decline, a relatively smooth period, and a period of fracture, with a tendency to change towards linear decay with increasing stress. In the case of freeze–thaw–fatigue coupling, the flexural modulus of the specimen decreases drastically by about 50% in the first 2 years, and then enters a period of steady decrease in flexural modulus in the 3rd–5th years. Personalized laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) has a broader application prospect than that of traditional casting. In this paper, the composition and corrosion resistance of the passive film formation mechanism of TC4 prepared by optimization of PBF-LB/M techniques and traditional casting were systematically studied in 0.9 wt.% NaCl at 37 °C by electrochemical technique and surface analysis. The rates of the passive film formation process, corrosion resistance and composition of TC4 show different characteristics for the different preparation processes. Although the rate of passive film formation of cast-TC4 was higher at the initial immersion, the open circuit potential was more positive, and the film thickness was larger after stabilization, those facts show no positive correlation with corrosion resistance. On the contrary, with no obvious defects on the optimized PBF-LB/M-TC4, the passive film resistance is 2.5 times more, the defect concentration is reduced by 30%, and the TiO2 content is higher than that of the cast-TC4, making the martensitic-based PBF-LB/M-TC4 exhibit excellent corrosion resistance. This paper reports the vapor pressure and enthalpy of vaporization for a promising phase change material (PCM) guanidinium methanesulfonate ([Gdm][OMs]), which is a typical guanidinium organomonosulfonate that displays a lamellar crystalline architecture. [Gdm][OMs] was purified by recrystallization. The elemental analysis and infrared spectrum of [Gdm][OMs] confirmed the purity and composition. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) also confirmed its high purity and showed a sharp and symmetrical endothermic melting peak with a melting point (Tm) of 207.6 °C and a specific latent heat of fusion of 183.0 J g−1. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals its thermal stability over a wide temperature range, and yet three thermal events at higher temperatures of 351 °C, 447 °C, and 649 °C were associated with vaporization or decomposition. The vapor pressure was measured using the isothermogravimetric method from 220 °C to 300 °C. The Antoine equation was used to describe the temperature dependence of its vapor pressure, and the substance-dependent Antoine constants were obtained by non-linear regression. The enthalpy of vaporization (ΔvapH) was derived from the linear regression of the slopes associated with the linear temperature dependence of the rate of weight loss per unit area of vaporization. Hence, the temperature dependence of vapor pressures ln Pvap (Pa) = 10.99 − 344.58/(T (K) − 493.64) over the temperature range from 493.15 K to 573.15 K and the enthalpy of vaporization ΔvapH = 157.10 ± 20.10 kJ mol−1 at the arithmetic mean temperature of 240 °C were obtained from isothermogravimetric measurements using the Antoine equation and the Clausius–Clapeyron equation, respectively. The flammability test indicates that [Gdm][OMs] is non-flammable. Hence, [Gdm][OMs] enjoys very low volatility, high enthalpy of vaporization, and non-flammability in addition to its known advantages. To quantitatively evaluate the effect of the process parameters and the material properties on the temperature in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), this paper proposed a sensitivity analysis of the temperature based on the validated prediction model. First, three different heat source modes—point heat source, Gaussian surface heat source, and Gaussian body heat source—were introduced. Then, a case study of Ti6Al4V is conducted to determine the suitable range of heat source density for the three different heat source models. Based on this, the effects of laser processing parameters and material thermophysical parameters on the temperature field and molten pool size are quantitatively discussed based on the Gaussian surface heat source. The results indicate that the Gaussian surface heat source and the Gaussian body heat source offer higher prediction accuracy for molten pool width compared to the point heat source under similar processing parameters. When the laser energy density is between 40 and 70 J/mm3, the prediction accuracy of the Gaussian surface heat source and the body heat source is similar, and the average prediction errors are 4.427% and 2.613%, respectively. When the laser energy density is between 70 and 90 J/mm3, the prediction accuracy of the Gaussian body heat source is superior to that of the Gaussian surface heat source. Among the influencing factors, laser power exerts the greatest influence on the temperature field and molten pool size, followed by scanning speed. In particular, laser power and scan speed contribute 38.9% and 23.5% to the width of the molten pool, 39.1% and 19.6% to the depth of the molten pool, and 38.9% and 21.5% to the maximum temperature, respectively. Bioinspired structural color represents a burgeoning field that draws upon principles, strategies, and concepts derived from biological systems to inspire the design of novel technologies or products featuring reversible color changing mechanisms, with significant potential applications for camouflage, sensors, anticounterfeiting, etc. This mini-review focuses specifically on the research progress of bioinspired structural color in the realm of camouflage. Firstly, it discusses fundamental mechanisms of coloration in biological systems, encompassing pigmentation, structural coloration, fluorescence, and bioluminescence. Subsequently, it delineates three modulation strategies—namely, photonic crystals, film interference, and plasmonic modulation—that contribute to the development of bioinspired structural color materials or devices. Moreover, the review critically assesses the integration of bioinspired structural color materials with environmental contexts, with a particular emphasis on their application in camouflage. In this paper, the stress–strain curves of Ti2AlNb are established based on uniaxial impact tests over wide ranges of temperature and strain rate. The Ti2AlNb exhibited the work hardening effect but did not show an obvious yield stage during a quasi-static compression test. In the SHPB test, an obvious temperature softening effect was found, the strain rate strengthening effect was detected when the strain rate was 4000–8000 s−1, and the strain rate softening effect was detected in the range of 8000–12,000 s−1. A function describing the effect of strain rate on the strain rate strengthening parameters under various temperatures was proposed to modify the basic J-C constitutive model. The relative errors between the experimental measured value and predicted values in various experimental conditions with a modified J-C model were less than 5.0%. The results verified that the modified J-C model could accurately describe the dynamic mechanical properties of Ti2AlNb at high temperatures and strain rates. In this paper, the possibility of retreated lithium slag (RTLS) with a high content of alkali, sulfate and fluoride as a partial replacement for fly ash (FA) to produce autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) was investigated. The influence of the RTLS dosage on the AAC performance were examined. The composition and microstructure of hydrates as well as the microstructure of the RTLS-FA-based AAC compositions were determined by XRD, FTIR, TG-DSC and SEM. The results illustrated that the incorporation of RTLS changed the crystal structure and the microstructure of the tobermorite. With increased RTLS contents, the morphology of tobermorite was changed, and the grass-like tobermorite gradually transformed into network-like tobermorite. The newly formed tobermorite improved the mechanical performance of the AAC. Compared with the RTLS10, the content of tobermorite in the RTLS30 increased by 8.6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unbonded flexible risers consist of several helical and cylindrical layers, which can undergo large bending deformation and can be installed in different configurations to adapt to harsh marine environments; thus, they can be applied to transport oil and gas resources from ultra-deep waters (UDW). Due to their special geometric characteristics, they can ensure sufficient axial tensile stiffness while having small bending stiffness, which can undergo large deflection bending deformation. In recent years, the development of unbonded flexible risers has been moving in an intelligent, integrated direction. This paper presents a review of unbonded flexible risers. Firstly, the form and properties of each interlayer of an unbonded flexible riser are introduced, as well as the corresponding performance and configuration characteristics. In recent years, the development of unbonded flexible risers has been evolving, and the development of machine learning on unbonded flexible risers is discussed. Finally, with emphasis on exploring the design characteristics and working principles, three new types of unbonded flexible risers, an integrated production bundle, an unbonded flexible riser with an anti-H2S layer, and an unbonded flexible riser with a composite armor layer, are presented. The research results show that: (1) the analytical methods of cross-sectional properties of unbonded flexible risers are solved based on ideal assumptions, and the computational accuracy needs to be improved. (2) Numerical methods have evolved from equivalent simplified models to models that account for detailed geometric properties. (3) Compared with ordinary steel risers, the unbonded flexible riser is more suitable for deep-sea resource development, and the structure of each layer can be designed according to the requirements of the actual environment. Due to its lightweight, high strength, good machinability, and low cost, aluminum alloy has been widely used in fields such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and construction. Traditional manufacturing processes for aluminum alloys often suffer from low material utilization, complex procedures, and long manufacturing cycles. Therefore, more and more scholars are turning their attention to the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process for aluminum alloys, which has the advantages of high material utilization, good formability for complex structures, and short manufacturing cycles. However, the widespread promotion and application of LPBF aluminum alloys still face challenges. The excellent printable ability, favorable mechanical performance, and low manufacturing cost are the main factors affecting the applicability of the LPBF process for aluminum alloys. This paper reviews the research status of traditional aluminum alloy processing and LPBF aluminum alloy and makes a comparison from various aspects such as microstructures, mechanical properties, application scenarios, and manufacturing costs. At present, the LPBF manufacturing cost for aluminum alloys is 2–120 times higher than that of traditional manufacturing methods, with the discrepancy depending on the complexity of the part. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the further development and application of aluminum alloy 3D printing technology from three aspects: the development of aluminum matrix composite materials reinforced with nanoceramic particles, the development of micro-alloyed aluminum alloy powders specially designed for LPBF, and the development of new technologies and equipment to reduce the manufacturing cost of LPBF aluminum alloy. The cooling requirement for long-wave infrared detectors still creates significant limitations to their functionality. The phenomenon of minority-carrier exclusion and extraction in narrow-gap semiconductors has been intensively studied for over three decades and used to increase the operating temperatures of devices. Decreasing free carrier concentrations below equilibrium values by a stationary non-equilibrium depletion of the device absorber leads to a suppression of Auger generation. In this paper, we focus on analyzing exclusion and extraction effects separately, based on experimental and theoretical results for a HgCdTe photodiode. To carry out an experiment, the n+-P+-π-N+ heterostructure was grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on CdTe-buffered GaAs substrate. In order to separate the extraction and exclusive junctions, three different devices were evaluated: (1) a detector etched through the entire n+-P+-π-N+ heterostructure, (2) a detector made of the P+-π photoconductive junction and (3) a detector made of the π-N+ photodiode junction. For each device, the dark current density–voltage characteristics were measured at a high-temperature range, from 195 K to 300 K. Next, the carrier concentration distribution across the entire heterostructure and individual junctions was calculated using the APSYS simulation program. It was shown that when the n+-P+-π-N+ photodiode is reverse biased, the electron concentration in the π absorber drops below its thermal equilibrium value, due to the exclusion effect at the P+-π junction and the extraction effect at the π-N+ junction. To maintain the charge neutrality, the hole concentration is also reduced below the equilibrium value and reaches the absorber doping level (NA), leading to the Auger generation rate's reduction by a factor of 2ni/NA, where ni is the intrinsic carrier concentration. Our experiment conducted for three separate detectors showed that the exclusion P+-π photoconductive junction has the most significant effect on the Auger suppression—the majority of the hole concentration drops to the doping level not only at the P+-π interface but also deep inside the π absorber. Hydrogen energy is the clean energy with the most potential in the 21st century. The microchannel reactor for methanol steam reforming (MSR) is one of the effective ways to obtain hydrogen. Ceramic materials have the advantages of high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and high mechanical strength, and are ideal materials for preparing the catalyst support in microchannel reactors. However, the structure of ceramic materials is hard and brittle, and the feature size of microchannel is generally not more than 1 mm, which is difficult to process using traditional processing methods. Diamond wire saw processing technology is mainly used in the slicing of hard and brittle materials such as sapphire and silicon. In this paper, a microchannel with a periodic corrugated microstructure was fabricated on a ceramic plate using diamond wire sawing, and then as a catalyst support when used in a microreactor for MSR hydrogen production. The effects of wire speed and feed speed on the amplitude and period size of the periodic corrugated microstructure were studied using a single-factor experiment. The microchannel surface morphology was observed via SEM and a 3D confocal laser microscope under different processing parameters. The microchannel samples obtained under different processing parameters were supported by a multiple impregnation method. The loading strength of the catalyst was tested via a strong wind purge experiment. The experimental results show that the periodic corrugated microstructure can significantly enhance the load strength of the catalyst. The microchannel catalyst support with the periodic corrugated microstructure was put into the microreactor for a hydrogen production experiment, and a good hydrogen production effect was obtained. Recycled concrete is a heterogeneous composite material, and the composition and volume fraction of each phase affect its macroscopic properties. In this paper, ANSYS APDL was used to construct a two-dimensional numerical model of recycled aggregate concrete with different replacement rates of recycled aggregate (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%), and a uniaxial compression test was carried out to explore the relationship between recycled aggregate content and its macroscopic mechanical behavior. On this basis, the numerical simulation of different strain rates (0.1 s−1, 0.05 s−1, 0.01 s−1, 0.005 s−1 and 0.001 s−1) was carried out. It was found that with the increase in the recycled aggregate replacement rate, the peak stress decreases first and then increases, and the peak strain increases continuously. When the replacement rate of recycled aggregate exceeds 50%, the overall damage area of the material increases rapidly. The strain rate will change the path of the micro-crack initiation and expansion of recycled concrete, as well as the process of damage accumulation and evolution. As a result, the unit area and shape of recycled concrete are different at different strain rates, and the damage degree of each phase material is also different. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the second-generation high-temperature superconducting conductors, rare earth–barium–copper–oxide (REBCO) coated conductor (CC) tapes have good potential as high-field and high-energy superconductors. In superconducting applications, several joints are required for conjugating comparatively short REBCO CC tapes. Soldering lap joints are the simplest and most commonly applied REBCO CC joints. In addition to joint resistance, the mechanical behavior and electromechanical properties are also crucial for superconducting applications. In this paper, the electromechanical properties and mechanical behaviors of soldering lap joints at 77 K under a self-field were studied. The mechanical behavior was addressed by using a full three-dimensional multilayer elastic–plastic finite element model (FEM) with REBCO CC tape main layers and solder connecting layers. Then, the electromechanical properties were analyzed by using Gao's strain- I c degradation general model on the basis of the FEM results. Both the mechanical behavior and electromechanical properties were verified by experimental results. The effects of soldering lap conditions including lap length, soldering thickness and lap style on the electromechanical properties and mechanical behaviors were discussed. The results indicate that shorter overlap lengths and a thinner solder can reduce the premature degradation of Ic due to stress concentrations nearby the joint edges; moreover, the irreversible critical strain is significantly higher in the back-to-back joint approach compared to the widely used face-to-face joint approach. Within recent years, there has been an increased interest towards organic photovoltaics (OPVs), especially with their significant device performance reaching beyond 19% since 2022. With these advances in the device performance of laboratory-scaled OPVs, there has also been more attention directed towards using printing and coating methods that are compatible with large-scale fabrication. Though large-area (>100 cm2) OPVs have reached an efficiency of 15%, this is still behind that of laboratory-scale OPVs. There also needs to be more focus on determining strategies for improving the lifetime of OPVs that are suitable for scalable manufacturing, as well as methods for reducing material and manufacturing costs. In this paper, we compare several printing and coating methods that are employed to fabricate OPVs, with the main focus towards the deposition of the active layer. This includes a comparison of performances at laboratory (<1 cm2), small (1–10 cm2), medium (10–100 cm2), and large (>100 cm2) active area fabrications, encompassing devices that use scalable printing and coating methods for only the active layer, as well as "fully printed/coated" devices. The article also compares the research focus of each of the printing and coating techniques and predicts the general direction that scalable and large-scale OPVs will head towards. In the present paper, composite thin films of barium strontium titanate (BaxSr1−xTiO3) with an acceptor modifier (magnesium oxide—MgO) were deposited on metal substrates (stainless steel type) using the sol–gel method. The composite thin films feature BaxSr1−xTiO3 ferroelectric solid solution as the matrix and MgO linear dielectric as the reinforcement, with MgO concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 mol%. Following thermal treatment at 650 °C, the films were analyzed for their impedance response. Experimental impedance spectra were modeled using the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function, revealing stretching parameters (β) in the range of approximately 0.78 to 0.89 and 0.56 to 0.90 for impedance and electric modulus formalisms, respectively. Notably, films modified with 3 mol% MgO exhibited the least stretched relaxation function. Employing the electric equivalent circuit method for data analysis, the "circle fit" analysis demonstrated an increase in capacitance from 2.97 × 10−12 F to 5.78 × 10−10 F with the incorporation of 3 mol% MgO into BST-based thin films. Further analysis based on Voigt, Maxwell, and ladder circuits revealed trends in resistance and capacitance components with varying MgO contents, suggesting non-Debye-type relaxation phenomena across all tested samples. High-strength low-alloy steels are widely used, but their traditional heat-treatment process is complex, energy-intensive, and makes it difficult to fully exploit the material's potential. In this paper, the electropulsing processing technology was applied to the quenching and tempering process of ZG25SiMn2CrB steel. Through microstructural characterization and mechanical property testing, the influence of electropulsing on the solid-state phase transition process of annealing steel was systematically studied. The heating process of the specimen with the annealing state (initial state) is the diffusion-type transition. As the discharge time increased, the microstructure gradually transformed from ferrite/pearlitic to slate martensite. Optimal mechanical properties and fine microstructure were achieved after quenching at 500 ms. The steel subjected to rapid tempering with 160 ms electropulsing exhibited good, comprehensive mechanical properties (tensile strength 1609 MPa, yield strength 1401.27 MPa, elongation 11.63%, and hardness 48.68 HRC). These favorable mechanical properties are attributed to the coupled impact of thermal and non-thermal effects induced by high-density pulse current. Specifically, the thermal effect provides the thermodynamic conditions for phase transformation, while the non-thermal effect reduces the nucleation barrier of austenite, which increases the nucleation rate during instantaneous heating, and the following rapid cooling suppresses the growth of austenite grains.
